RESUMO

PURPOSE: The current study reports preliminary findings from a pilot sample that sought to compare the emotional responses of older adults toward death in Egyptian and Spanish cultures. METHOD: A cohort of 90 eligible older adults from Egypt and Spain were recruited using a cross-sectional descriptive design. RESULTS: Egyptian participants recorded a significantly higher score in approaching acceptance of death compared to their Spanish counterparts (mean = 21.57, SD = 9.4 and mean = 13.51, SD = 7.11, respectively). Post-hoc test showed there were differences in levels of valence (F[1,86] = 23.88, p < 0.001), indicating that older adults in Spain perceived such images as more unpleasant compared to Egyptian older adults. A significant difference related to death attitude profile scale was noted between Egyptian and Spanish older adults. CONCLUSION: Egyptian and Spanish older adults demonstrated different attitudes toward death in addition to differences in death anxiety and depression. This preliminary study validates the importance of developing effective nursing strategies to lessen anxiety and fear about death. [Research in Gerontological Nursing, 17(3), 112-120.].

RESUMO

Patients with dementia express a set of problematic and deteriorating symptoms, along with self-care dependency. Over time, the mental health of family caregivers of persons with dementia may be affected, putting them at a high risk for psychopathology, which may be associated with endangered wellbeing of people with dementia. This cross-sectional instrumental design study examined the psychometric properties of the Depression Anxiety Stress Scale 8-items (DASS-8), DASS-12, and DASS-21 in a convenient sample of 571 caregivers from northern Italy and southern Switzerland (mean age = 53 years, SD = 12, range = 24-89 years). A bifactor structure of the three measures had the best fit; some items of the DASS-12/DASS-21 failed to load on their domain-specific factors. The three-factor structure was invariant across various groups (e.g., gender and education), expressed adequate reliability and convergent validity, and had strong positive correlation with the three-item UCLA Loneliness Scale (UCLALS3). Distress scores did not differ among carers of different types of dementia (Alzheimer's disease vs. other types, e.g., vascular dementia). However, distress scores were significantly high among female individuals, adult children caregivers, those caring for dependent patients, and those who received help with care. For 54.9 and 38.8% of the latter, care was provided by relatives and health professionals, respectively. Since the DASS-8 expresses adequate psychometrics comparable with the DASS-21, it may be used as a brief measure of distress in this population.

RESUMO

Aim: This study aimed to investigate the association between dental anxiety (DA) and oral-health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) among rural community-dwelling older adults. Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted among 390 rural community-dwelling older adults attending outpatient clinics of the Damanhur National Medical Institute during the year 2021. Three instruments were used: a demographic and clinical data structured interview schedule, Modified Dental Anxiety Scale (MDAS), and the Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP-5) questionnaire. All statistical analyses were considered significant at a p-value of ≤0.001. Results: The main results showed that the prevalence of DA among participants was 90.5%, and 66.9% of the studied elderly population were either extremely (phobic) or very anxious. Moreover, a significant association was found between older adults' DA and their OHRQoL (p ˂ 0.001). Conclusions: It was concluded that DA represents a common problem among rural community-dwelling older adults and is a predictor for poor OHRQoL. Raising community awareness about the importance of oral health and implementing measures to avoid DA through specialized community campaigns is recommended, particularly in rural areas.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: There are multiple variables that influence fear of death, as well as attitudes towards it, including age, religiosity, emotional and cultural aspects. Due to the proximity to death, the study of attitudes and death-related anxiety and the variables that influence it in the elderly population is of great relevance. The aim of the present study was to compare the levels of death anxiety, fear of death, attitudes towards death and associated emotional aspects (anxiety and depression) in older adults from 2different cultures, Western and Arab. MATERIALS AND METHOD: A total of 91 people over 60 years old took part and were divided into 2groups, one of people born in Spain (n=46) and the other of people born in Egypt (n=45). In an individualised assessment, participants completed the DAS, PRAM and the anxiety and depression subscales of the SCL-90-R questionnaires. RESULTS: Statistically significant differences between groups were observed in fear of death, acceptance and emotional aspects. Predictors of anxiety and fear of death were different for each group. CONCLUSION: The results show the importance of taking into account cultural, religious and emotional aspects in the evaluation of fear and attitudes towards death in the elderly population.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Iron deficiency anemia is a public health problem affecting both developing and developed countries, with devastating consequences on health as well as social and economic development. However, there are scarce data regarding community awareness in Saudi Arabia; therefore, this study was conducted to assess the awareness of the community about the relationship between black tea consumption and iron deficiency anemia. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted, with 231 participants from Al-Ahsa region agreeing to participate voluntarily. The study instrument gathered sociodemographic data on the participants and asked them awareness-related questions. RESULTS: None of the study participants was completely aware of iron-rich foods, although the majority of the participants had a decent awareness level. Statistically significant differences were found between age, educational level, and type, the number of cups of black tea consumed per day, and awareness of the relationship between black tea consumption and iron deficiency anemia. CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS: Based on the finding that the majority of the participants had moderate awareness, education and awareness-raising strategies should be planned and offered to improve nutritional habits and to encourage refraining from the consumption of food and drinks that hinder iron bioavailability.
