RESUMO
A new pentacyclic oleanene triterpene, 2beta, 3beta, 16alpha, 28-tetrahydroxy-olean-12-ene-23-oic acid (1), as well as the known pentacyclic triterpene medicagenic acid (2), have been isolated by different chromatographic techniques from the acid hydrolysate of the saponin fraction of Gladiolus segetum. The identification of these compounds was established by different methods of physical, chemical and spectral evidence.

From the arial parts of Bassia muricata, two acylated flavonoid glycosides quercetin-3-O-(6"-caffeoyl)-sophoroside and quercetin-3-O-(6"-feruloyl)-sophoroside have been isolated together with two known flavonoid glycosides quercetin-3-O-sophoroside and quercetin-3,7-O-beta-diglucopyranoside, as well as four known triterpenoidal saponins, oleanolic acid-3-O-beta-glucopyranoside, chikusetsusaponin IVa, chikusetsusaponin IVa methyl ester and oleanolic acid-3,28-beta-diglucopyranoside. The structures of the isolated compounds were verified by means of MS and NMR spectral analyses.

From the leaves of Phlomis aurea, two new iridoids of unique structures named 3-epiphlomurin (1) and phlomurin (2), a new megastigmane glucoside phlomuroside (3) and a new benzyl alcohol glycoside having the structure benzyl alcohol-O-beta-xylopyranosyl-(1-->2)-beta-glucopyranoside (4) have been isolated together with four known iridoids auroside, lamiide, 8-epiloganin and ipolamiide, two known phenolic glycosides acteoside (verbascoside) and syringin, one known phenylethanoid glycoside 2-phenylethyl-O-beta-xylopyranosyl-(1-->2)-beta-glucopyranoside, one known lignan liriodendrin and three known flavonoids chrysoeriol-7-O-beta-glucopyranoside, acacetin-7-O-beta-glucopyranoside and luteolin-7-O-beta-glucopyranoside. The structures of the isolated compounds were verified by means of mass spectrometry (MS) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectral analyses.

From the aerial parts of Cornulaca monacantha, three new triterpenoidal saponins have been isolated and their genuine structures were identified as 3-O-[beta-xylopyranosyl-(1-->3)-beta- glucuronopyranosyl]-30-methylphytolaccagenate (2), 3-O-[beta-xylopyranosyl- (1-->3)-beta-glucuronopyranosyl]-30-methylphytolaccagenate 28-O-beta-gluco-pyranoside (3) and 3-O-[beta-xylopyranosyl-(1-->3)-beta- glucurono-pyranosyl]-30-methylserjanate 28-O-beta glucopyranoside (4) together with nine known saponins of oleanolic acid (5-9), hederagenin (1, 10, 11) and 30-methyl phytolaccagenate (12).

Two new quinoidal dimers, a new naphthohydroquinone anhydride, a known naphthoic acid ester derivative and two known benzoic acid derivatives were isolated from the chloroform fraction of a chloroform-methanol (1:1) extract of Rubia cordifolia L. The identification of these compounds was based on spectral analysis.

Three new chalcanol glucosides have been isolated from the seeds of Trifolium alexandrinum, of which the first two are alpha'-chalcanol-alpha, beta-epoxides and the third one is an alpha, beta-dihydroxy-alpha'-chalcanol. The structures of the isolated compounds were verified by means of MS and 2D NMR spectral analyses.

Further investigation of the leaves and stems of Zygophyllum album afforded four triterpene glycosides which were characterized as 14-decarboxyquinovic acid-3 beta-O-beta-D-quinovopyranosyl (1-->4)-quinovopyranoside, quinovic acid 28-O-beta-D-glucopyranosyl (2-->1)beta-D-glucopyranosyl ester, quinovic acid 27-O-beta-D-glucopyranosyl(2-->1)beta-D-glucopyranosyl ester and quinovic acid-3-beta-O-glucopyranosyl(2-->1)rhamnopyranoside. In addition, two flavonoid glycosides were isolated. The structures of the isolated compounds were established by GC, GC-MS, mass spectra, 1H and 13C NMR.
