RESUMO

One of the remaining challenges in magnetic thermonuclear fusion is survival of the heat shield protecting the tokamak reactor vessel against excessive plasma heat fluxes. Unmitigated high confinement edge localized mode (ELM) is a regular heat pulse damaging the heat shield. We suggest a novel concept of magnetic sweeping of the plasma contact strike point fast and far enough in order to spread this heat pulse. We demonstrate feasibility of a dedicated copper coil in a resonant circuit, including the induced currents and power electronics. We predict the DEMO ELM properties, simulate heat conduction, 3D particles motion and magnetic fields of the plasma and coil in COMSOL Multiphysics and Matlab. The dominant system parameter is voltage, feasible 18 kV yields 1 kHz sweeping frequency, suppressing the ELM-induced surface temperature rise by a factor of 3. Multiplied by other known mitigation concepts, ELMs might be mitigated enough to ensure safe operation of DEMO.

RESUMO

There is evidence across a range of bi-parental species that physiological changes may occur in partnered males prior to the birth of an infant. It has been hypothesised that these hormonal changes might facilitate care-giving behaviours, which could augment infant survival. The mechanism that induces these changes has not been identified, but evidence from several species suggests that odour may play a role. The current study investigated this in humans by recording testosterone and psychological measures related to infant interest and care in men (n = 91) both before and after exposure to odours from either pregnant women or non-pregnant control women. We found no evidence for an effect of odour cues of pregnancy on psychological measures including self-reported sociosexual orientation and social dominance scores, ratings of infant or adult faces, or testosterone levels. However, we found that brief exposure to post-partum odours significantly increased the reward value of infant faces. Our study is the first to show that the odour of peri-partum women may lead to upregulation of men's interest in infants.

RESUMO

Genes of the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) in vertebrates are integral for effective adaptive immune response and are associated with sexual selection. Evidence from a range of vertebrates supports MHC-based preference for diverse and dissimilar mating partners, but evidence from human mate choice studies has been disparate and controversial. Methodologies and sampling peculiarities specific to human studies make it difficult to know whether wide discrepancies in results among human populations are real or artefact. To better understand what processes may affect MHC-mediated mate choice across humans and nonhuman primates, we performed phylogenetically controlled meta-analyses using 58 effect sizes from 30 studies across seven primate species. Primates showed a general trend favouring more MHC-diverse mates, which was statistically significant for humans. In contrast, there was no tendency for MHC-dissimilar mate choice, and for humans, we observed effect sizes indicating selection of both MHC-dissimilar and MHC-similar mates. Focusing on MHC-similar effect sizes only, we found evidence that preference for MHC similarity was an artefact of population ethnic heterogeneity in observational studies but not among experimental studies with more control over sociocultural biases. This suggests that human assortative mating biases may be responsible for some patterns of MHC-based mate choice. Additionally, the overall effect sizes of primate MHC-based mating preferences are relatively weak (Fisher's Z correlation coefficient for dissimilarity Zr = 0.044, diversity Zr = 0.153), calling for careful sampling design in future studies. Overall, our results indicate that preference for more MHC-diverse mates is significant for humans and likely conserved across primates.

RESUMO

The core Thomson scattering diagnostic (TS) on the COMPASS tokamak was put in operation and reported earlier. Implementation of edge TS, with spatial resolution along the laser beam up to ∼1/100 of the tokamak minor radius, is presented now. The procedure for spatial calibration and alignment of both core and edge systems is described. Several further upgrades of the TS system, like a triggering unit and piezo motor driven vacuum window shutter, are introduced as well. The edge TS system, together with the core TS, is now in routine operation and provides electron temperature and density profiles.

RESUMO

The contribution focuses on plasma tomography via the minimum Fisher regularisation (MFR) algorithm applied on data from the recently commissioned tomographic diagnostics on the COMPASS tokamak. The MFR expertise is based on previous applications at Joint European Torus (JET), as exemplified in a new case study of the plasma position analyses based on JET soft x-ray (SXR) tomographic reconstruction. Subsequent application of the MFR algorithm on COMPASS data from cameras with absolute extreme ultraviolet (AXUV) photodiodes disclosed a peaked radiating region near the limiter. Moreover, its time evolution indicates transient plasma edge cooling following a radial plasma shift. In the SXR data, MFR demonstrated that a high resolution plasma positioning independent of the magnetic diagnostics would be possible provided that a proper calibration of the cameras on an x-ray source is undertaken.

RESUMO

Human body odour is important in modulating self-perception and interactions between individuals. Artificial fragrances have been used for thousands of years to manipulate personal odour, but the nature and extent of influences on person perception are relatively unexplored. Here we test the effects of a double-blind manipulation of personal odour on self-confidence and behaviour. We gave to male participants either an aerosol spray containing a formulation of fragrance and antimicrobial agents or an otherwise identical spray that lacked these active ingredients. Over several days, we found effects between treatment groups on psychometric self-confidence and self-perceived attractiveness. Furthermore, although there was no difference between groups in mean attractiveness ratings of men's photographs by a female panel, the same women judged men using the active spray as more attractive in video-clips, suggesting a behavioural difference between the groups. Attractiveness of an individual male's non-verbal behaviour, independent of structural facial features, was predicted by the men's self-reported proclivity towards the provided deodorant. Our results demonstrate the pervasive influence of personal odour on self-perception, and how this can extend to impressions on others even when these impressions are formed in the absence of odour cues.

RESUMO

The RhD protein which is the RHD gene product and a major component of the Rh blood group system carries the strongest blood group immunogen, the D-antigen. This antigen is absent in a significant minority of the human population (RhD-negatives) due to RHD deletion or alternation. The origin and persistence of this RhD polymorphism is an old evolutionary enigma. Before the advent of modern medicine, the carriers of the rarer allele (e.g. RhD-negative women in the population of RhD-positives or RhD-positive men in the population of RhD-negatives) were at a disadvantage as some of their children (RhD-positive children born to pre-immunized RhD-negative mothers) were at a higher risk of foetal or newborn death or health impairment from haemolytic disease. Therefore, the RhD-polymorphism should be unstable, unless the disadvantage of carriers of the locally less abundant allele is counterbalanced by, for example, higher viability of the heterozygotes. Here we demonstrated for the first time that among Toxoplasma-free subjects the RhD-negative men had faster reaction times than Rh-positive subjects and showed that heterozygous men with both the RhD plus and RhD minus alleles were protected against prolongation of reaction times caused by infection with the common protozoan parasite Toxoplasma gondii. Our results suggest that the balancing selection favouring heterozygotes could explain the origin and stability of the RhD polymorphism. Moreover, an unequal prevalence of toxoplasmosis in different countries could explain pronounced differences in frequencies of RhD-negative phenotype in geographically distinct populations.

RESUMO

Toxoplasma gondii is known to induce specific behavioural changes in its intermediate hosts. This is usually considered to be an evolutionary adaptation aimed to increase the probability of transmission of the parasite into its definitive host, the cat, by predation. In rodents an increase of reaction time as well as many other specific behavioural patterns have been observed. Here we report the results of our double blind study showing the significantly longer reaction times of 60 subjects with latent toxoplasmosis in comparison with those of 56 controls. Moreover, the existence of a positive correlation between length of infection and mean reaction time suggested that slow and cumulative effects of latent toxoplasmosis rather than a one-step (and possibly transient) effect of acute toxoplasmosis disease are responsible for the decrease of psychomotor performance of infected subjects. To our knowledge, this is the first study confirming the existence of such parasite-induced changes in human behaviour that could be considered in evolutionary history of the human species as adaptive from the point of view of parasite transmission.

RESUMO

The present a novel class of multidimensional orthogonal FM transforms. The analysis suggests a novel signal-adaptive FM transform possessing interesting energy compaction properties. We show that the proposed signal-adaptive FM transform produces point spectra for multidimensional signals with uniformly distributed samples. This suggests that the proposed transform is suitable for energy compaction and subsequent coding of broadband signals and images that locally exhibit significant level diversity. We illustrate these concepts with simulation experiments.

RESUMO

Solid-state conformations of 6-amino-2,3,6-trideoxy-D-erythro-hexono-1,6-lactam (3a) and 6-amino-3,6-dideoxy-D-xylo-hexono-1,6-lactam (7a) were determined using X-ray diffraction. Conformations of the compounds 3a, 7a, and their per-O-acetyl derivatives 4,5-di-O-acetyl-6-amino-2,3,6-trideoxy-D-erythro-hexono-1,6-lactam (3b) and 2,4,5-tri-O-acetyl-6-amino-3,6-dideoxy-D-xylo-hexono-1,6-lactam (7b) in solutions were deduced from the analysis of NMR spectra using a modified Karplus equation and compared with the results of circular dichroism measurement of lactams 3a and 7a. Conformation 4C(1,N) was revealed for solid lactams 3a and 7a and for lactams 7a and 7b in solution, while lactams 3a and 3b in solution exist in the approximately 1:1 equilibrium of the conformers 4C(1,N) and (1,N)C4.

RESUMO

We develop multicomponent AM-FM models for multidimensional signals. The analysis is cast in a general n-dimensional framework where the component modulating functions are assumed to lie in certain Sobolev spaces. For both continuous and discrete linear shift invariant (LSI) systems with AM-FM inputs, powerful new approximations are introduced that provide closed form expressions for the responses in terms of the input modulations. The approximation errors are bounded by generalized energy variances quantifying the localization of the filter impulse response and by Sobolev norms quantifying the smoothness of the modulations. The approximations are then used to develop novel spatially localized demodulation algorithms that estimate the AM and FM functions for multiple signal components simultaneously from the channel responses of a multiband linear filterbank used to isolate components. Two discrete computational paradigms are presented. Dominant component analysis estimates the locally dominant modulations in a signal, which are useful in a variety of machine vision applications, while channelized components analysis delivers a true multidimensional multicomponent signal representation. We demonstrate the techniques on several images of general interest in practical applications, and obtain reconstructions that establish the validity of characterizing images of this type as sums of locally narrowband modulated components.

RESUMO

Latent toxoplasmosis is the most widespread parasite infection in developed and developing countries. The prevalence of Toxoplasma gondii infection varies mostly between 20 to 80% in different territories. This form of toxoplasmosis is generally considered to be asymptomatic. Recently published results, however, suggest that the personality profiles of infected subjects differ from those of uninfected controls. These results, however, were obtained on non-standard populations (biologists or former acute toxoplasmosis patients). Here we studied the personality profiles of 191 young women tested for anti-Toxoplasma immunity during gravidity. The results showed that the differences between Toxoplasma-negative and Toxoplasma-positive subjects exits also in this sample of healthy women. The subjects with latent toxoplasmosis had higher intelligence, lower guilt proneness, and possibly also higher ergic tension. The difference in several other factors (desurgency/surgency, alaxia/protension, naiveté/shrewdness, and self-sentiment integration) concerned changes in the variances, rather than the mean values of the factors.

RESUMO

We compute AM-FM representations for multicomponent, nonstationary images using a statistical component model. Components are isolated with a filterbank comprising frequency and orientation selective channels. The modulating functions for each component are estimated from the channel responses using localized nonlinear operators followed by optimal MMSE estimators. We also demonstrate reconstruction from the representation.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To assess the value of endoscopic guidance in bedside percutaneous dilational tracheostomy. DESIGN: The medical critical care unit of a large community hospital. SETTING: 71 consecutive adult patients who required prolonged mechanical ventilation. INTERVENTIONS: 72 elective percutaneous dilational tracheostomies using the Ciaglia technique were performed under view of a flexible fiberoptic bronchoscope. MEASUREMENTS AND RESULTS: Patients were examined during tracheostomy and on days 2 and 7 after the procedure, at discharge and after half a year if they were still alive. A correct median puncture was observed by endoscopic control in 59 interventions. An initial paramedian puncture was detected in 13/72 (18%) procedures and was corrected by renewed insertion in all cases. No severe complications related to percutaneous dilational tracheostomy were noticed. Minor complications occurred in 4/71 (5.6%) patients including minor bleeding in 2, inflammatory infiltration in 1 and one superficial lesion of the posterior tracheal mucosa. Long-term follow-up revealed stomal granulation in 3 patients including one at the tracheal site. At the end of the observation period the tracheostomy still was in use in 14/71 (20%) patients and 12/71 (17%) patients were decannulated. Due to their severe underlying diseases 45/71 (63%) patients had died. To facilitate weaning from the tracheostomy a minitracheostomy tube was used in 3 patients. CONCLUSION: Percutaneous dilational tracheostomy is a simple bedside procedure associated with a low complication rate. We recommend the use of endoscopic guidance to increase the safety of tracheal puncture and dilation procedure.

RESUMO

Popper's rationalism makes an important contribution of the 20th century philosophy to the methodology of natural sciences. Through its criterion of falsification, it enabled the scientists to take a critical but constructive view on hypotheses, conjectures and theories. This attitude found its application also in medicine.

RESUMO

The pepsin extraction of group A type 1 streptococci for the isolation of M protein fragments was studied at different pH values and at different time intervals. The extracts were compared by SDS PAGE and fused rocket immunoelectrophoresis. Type 1 M protein fragments were prepared in preparative scale by pepsin extraction of type 1 streptococci at pH 5.5 for 60 min. The fragments were separated by affinity chromatography on immobilized fibrinogen and finally purified for sequence studies by gel chromatography. Pepsin extraction of group A type 3 streptococci was also studied at different pH values. In contrast to type 1, the SDS PAGE pattern changed drastically in dependence on the pH. Affinity chromatography on immobilized fibrinogen is also effective in the separation of the pH 5.5 type 3 streptococcal pepsin extract.

RESUMO

Fibrinogen was labelled with 125Iodine by mild chemical oxidation and its binding to Streptococcus pyogenes was subjected to quantitative analysis, inhibition and desorption studies. Fibrinogen was bound both by virulent and avirulent (M protein-positive and M protein-negative) matched strains of several serotypes. In all pairs of strains fibrinogen uptake was much higher by the M-positive variants. The ratio of bound fibrinogen to total fibrinogen was highly dependent both on the concentration of fibrinogen and the concentration of cocci. Equilibrium binding studies showed that the binding was a multifactorial process. Probably not only receptor fibrinogen interactions but also interactions between bound and unbound fibrinogen molecules took place. The uptake of fibrinogen was highly depressed in avirulent strains and practically uninfluenced in virulent strains by the presence of albumin or immunoglobulin. The bond between fibrinogen and streptococci is therefore different in virulent and avirulent variants. The fibrinogen receptors on the cell surface are specific.

RESUMO

Limited proteolysis of the surface of type 1 Streptococcus pyogenes by pepsin gives rise to fragment Pep M1 of Mr 20270 as the main product which covers the N-terminal part of the M protein. The amino acid sequence was determined of the N-terminal region of the M protein representing the most exposed part of the molecule on the surface fibrils of streptococcal cells, which seems to be very important for the differentiation of the individual serological types. The sequence differs from the homologous N-terminal sequences of types 5, 6 and 24, and shows a homology with sequences repeating in the chain of type 24. Fragment Pep M1 binds to fibrinogen; the absence of its 30 N-terminal amino acid residues, however, abolishes this interaction which is believed to play a role in the virulence of S. pyogenes.
