RESUMO

In this research, a new magnetic nanocomposite Fe3O4@Saponin/Cu(II) based on quillaja saponin was prepared and the catalyst structure was characterized thoroughly using FT-IR, EDS, TGA, XRD, VSM, HR-TEM, SEM, ICP, BET analyzes. The catalyst prepared in the three-component synthesis of several Betti bases, 1-(α-aminoalkyl)naphthols, under environmentally friendly conditions was used. The advantage of this reaction is the high efficiency of the products and the short reaction time. Furthermore, Fe3O4@Saponin/Cu(II) nano-catalyst is recoverable magnetically and is reusable for other processes with no reduction in its activity.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: There is no clinical study on ceramic self-ligating brackets (SLBs). Therefore, this preliminary study was conducted for the first time to address its effects. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This split-mouth randomized trial was performed on 32 quadrants in 16 orthodontic patients needing extraction of maxillary premolars and distalization of canines. In each blinded patient, right/left sides were randomized into control (ceramic bracket) and experimental (ceramic SLB) groups. Dental stone models were taken before canine retraction and 3 months into retraction. Models were digitized as three-dimensional models. Changes were measured on superimposed models. Groups were compared using Wilcoxon signed-rank test (α = 0.05, ß = 0.1). RESULTS: Both bracket types caused significant changes after 3 months in terms of all assessed clinical outcomes (P ≤ 0.002). Compared to conventional ceramic brackets (control), ceramic SLBs reduced retraction rate (P = 0.001), canine rotation (P = 0.001), canine tipping (P = 0.002), and arch expansion at the canine site (P = 0.003). However, the extents of anchorage loss (P = 0.796) and arch constriction in the premolar area (P = 0.605) were not statistically different between the bracket types. CONCLUSION: Compared to conventional metal-lined ceramic brackets, active ceramic SLB can increase the duration of canine distalization, while reducing canine rotation and tipping (inducing more bodily movements). The loss of anchorage with ceramic SLB was similar to that of conventional ceramic bracket after 3 months of treatment (considering the lower rate of SLB canine retraction during that time). Both brackets similarly constricted the arch at the premolar site. In the canine area, they expanded the arch, with the SLB causing smaller extents of expansion.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: Extraction of mandibular third molars (M3s) in close proximity to the mandibular canal has some inherent risks to adjacent structures, such as neurologic damage to teeth, bone defects distal to the mandibular second molar (M2), or pathologic fractures in association with enlarged dentigerous cysts. The procedure for extrusion and subsequent extraction of high-risk M3s is called orthodontic extraction. This is a systematic review of the available approaches for orthodontic extraction of impacted mandibular M3s in close proximity to the mandibular canal and their outcomes. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The PubMed, Scopus, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL), DOAJ, Google Scholar, OpenGrey, Iranian Science Information Database (SID), Iranmedex, and Irandoc databases were searched using specific keywords up to June 2, 2014. Studies were evaluated based on predetermined eligibility criteria, treatment approaches, and their outcomes. RESULTS: Thirteen articles met the inclusion criteria. A total of 123 impacted teeth were extracted by orthodontic extraction and 2 cases were complicated by transient paresthesia. Three types of biomechanical approaches were used: 1) using the posterior maxillary region as the anchor for orthodontic extrusion of lower M3s, 2) simple cantilever springs attached to the M3 buttonhole, and 3) cantilever springs tied to a bonded orthodontic bracket on the M3 plus multiple-loop spring wire for distal movement of the M3. Osteo-periodontal status of M2s also improved uneventfully. CONCLUSION: Despite the drawbacks of orthodontic extraction, removal of deeply impacted M3s using the described techniques is safe with regard to mandibular nerve injury and neurologic damage. Orthodontic extraction is recommended for extraction of impacted M3s that present a high risk of postoperative osteo-periodontal defects on the distal surface of the adjacent M2 and those associated with dentigerous cysts.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: There have been numerous researches on elastomeric ligatures, but clinical conditions in different stages of treatment are not exactly similar to laboratory conditions. The aim of this in vitro study was to simulate clinical conditions and evaluate the effect of three stretching patterns on the amount of force, tensile strength (TS) and extension to TS of the elastomers during 8 weeks. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Forces, TS and extension to TS of two different brands of elastomers were measured at initial, 24 h and 2, 4, and 8-week intervals using a testing machine. During the study period, the elastomers were stored in three different types of jig (uniform stretching, 1 and 3 mm point stretching) designed by the computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing technique in order to simulate the different stages of orthodontic treatment. RESULTS: The elastomeric ligatures under study exhibited a similar force decay pattern. The maximum force decay occurred during the first 24 h (49.9% ± 15%) and the amount of force decay was 75.7% ± 8% after 8 weeks. In general, the TS decreased during the study period, and the amount of extension to TS increased. CONCLUSION: Although the elastic behavior of all ligatures under study was similar, the amount of residual force, TS and extension to TS increased in elastomers under point stretching pattern.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Different surgical procedures that reduce orthodontic treatment time have been recommended. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of a new less invasive surgical technique (called flapless bur decortications) for accelerating orthodontic tooth movement. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study was designed as a split-mouth study. The left and right maxillary first premolars of five dogs were extracted. An A-NiTi closed coil spring and an absolute anchorage was used for premolar protraction in both sides. In each dog, decortications were performed for one side and the other side was used as the control group. The distance between canine and second premolar was measured and the sites of decortication were evaluated histologically. The data was analyzed by paired samples t-test and multivariate analysis of two-way repeated measures ANOVA. RESULTS: The study teeth moved more than their controls in the first month and less than their controls in the third month (P < 0.05). The total difference between study and control movements was not significant (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: (1) Corticotomy facilitated orthodontic tooth movement is achievable with flapless bur decortication technique. (2) Velocity of tooth movement decreases in later stages of treatment due to maturation of newly formed bone at decortication sites.
