INTRODUCTION: The periosteum is a readily available tissue at the hamstring harvest site that could be utilized to enhance graft healing and prevent tunnel widening without additional cost or morbidity. This study aimed to compare graft healing using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and functional clinical outcome scores in a matched cohort of patients who underwent anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction with hamstring autografts with or without periosteal augmentation. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Forty-eight patients who underwent ACL reconstruction (ACLR) were prospectively enrolled: 25 with standard ACLR (ST-ACLR) and 23 with periosteal augmented grafts (PA-ACLR). The same surgical techniques, fixation methods, and postoperative protocol were used in both groups. Signal-to-noise quotient (SNQ), graft healing at the bone-graft interface, graft signal according to the Howell scale, and femoral tunnel widening were evaluated using MRI after 1 year of follow-up. International knee documentation score (IKDC), Lysholm, Tegner activity scale, and visual analog scale for pain were used for functional evaluation at a minimum of 2 years postoperative. RESULTS: The mean SNQ of the proximal part of the graft was 9.6 ± 9.2 and 2.9 ± 3.3 for the ST-ACLR and PA-ACLR groups, respectively (P = 0.005). The mean femoral tunnel widening was 30.3% ± 18.3 and 2.3% ± 9.9 for the ST-ACLR, PA-ACLR groups, respectively (P < 0.001). Complete graft tunnel healing was observed in 65% and 28% of cases in the PA-ACLR and ST-ACLR groups, respectively. Both groups showed marked improvements in functional scores, with no statistically significant differences. CONCLUSION: Periosteal wrapping of hamstring tendon autografts is associated with better graft healing and maturation and lower incidence of femoral tunnel widening based on MRI analysis 1 year after ACL reconstruction. However, patient-reported outcomes and measured laxity were similar between the two groups at 2 years follow up. Efficient separation of Kr from Kr/Xe mixtures is pivotal in nuclear waste management and dark matter research. Thus far, scientists have encountered a formidable challenge: the absence of a material with the ability to selectively adsorb Kr over Xe at room temperature. This study presents a groundbreaking transformation of the renowned metal-organic framework (MOF) CuBTC, previously acknowledged for its Xe adsorption affinity, into an unparalleled Kr-selective adsorbent. This achievement stems from an innovative densification approach involving systematic compression of the MOF, where the crystal size, interparticle interaction, defects, and evacuation conditions are synergistically modulated. The resultant densified CuBTC phase exhibits exceptional mechanical resilience, radiation tolerance, and notably an unprecedented selectivity for Kr over Xe at room temperature. Simulation and experimental kinetic diffusion studies confirm reduced gas diffusion in the densified MOF, attributed to its small pore window and minimal interparticle voids. The lighter Kr element demonstrates facile surface passage and higher diffusivity within the material, while the heavier Xe encounters increased difficulty entering the material and lower diffusivity. This Kr-selective MOF not only represents a significant breakthrough in Kr separation but also demonstrates remarkable processability and scalability to kilogram levels. The findings presented herein underscore the transformative potential of engineered MOFs in addressing complex challenges, heralding a new era of Kr separation technologies.

Background Bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) is a significant complication in extremely preterm infants. Therefore, early diagnosis of BPD is important for planning treatment strategies. In this study, we aimed to assess the predictive efficacy of the Respiratory Severity Score (RSS) in determining severe BPD or death outcomes in very preterm infants. Methodology This retrospective study included preterm infants born with a gestational age of ≤30 weeks. The inclusion criteria comprised individuals who were mechanically ventilated (<1 week) during the first four weeks of life. Any patients who died during the first seven days of life were excluded. RSS values were recorded on days 3, 14, 21, and 28 of life. Multivariate logistic regression was used to identify a correlation between RSS and patient outcomes. Results A total of 154 infants were included in the analysis, of whom 82 (53.24%) developed severe BPD and 38 (24.67%) died. RSS was higher in patients who either died or developed severe BPD compared to those who survived. The multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed that RSSs at postnatal day 14 (odds ratio (OR) = 3.970; 95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.114-14.147; p < 0.05), day 21 (OR = 6.201; 95% CI = 1.937-19.851; p < 0.05), and day 28 (OR = 8.925; 95% CI = 3.331-28.383; p < 0.05) was significantly associated with a higher risk of death or severe BPD. Conclusions The findings of the present study revealed that RSS can help predict the risk of severe BPD in very preterm infants.

Newly discovered opto-ionic effects in metal oxides provide unique opportunities for functional ceramic applications. The authors generalize the recently demonstrated grain boundary opto-ionic effect observed in solid electrolyte thin films under ultraviolet (UV) irradiation to a radiation-ionic effect that can be applied to bulk materials and used for gamma-rays (γ-rays) detection. Near room temperature, lightly doped Gd-doped CeO2, a polycrystalline ion conducting ceramic, exhibits a resistance ratio change ≈103 and reversible response in ionic current when exposed to 60Co γ-ray (1.1 and 1.3 MeV). This is attributed to the steady state passivation of space charge barriers at grain boundaries, that act as virtual electrodes, capturing radiation-induced electrons, in turn lowering space charge barrier heights, and thereby exclusively modulating the ionic carrier flow within the ceramic electrolytes. Such behavior allows significant electrical response under low fields, that is, < 2 V cm-1, paving the way to inexpensive, sensitive, low-power, and miniaturizable solid-state devices, uniquely suited for operating in harsh (high temperature, pressure, and corrosive) environments. This discovery presents opportunities for portable and/or scalable radiation detectors benefiting geothermal drilling, small modular reactors, nuclear security, and waste management.

The structure-activity relationship of a new tert-butylphenylthiazole series, with a pyrimidine linker, was investigated. We wished to expand knowledge of this novel class of antibiotics by generating 21 new derivatives bearing ≥2 heteroatoms in their side chains. Their activity was examined against isolates of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), Clostridium difficile, Escherichia coli, Neisseria gonorrhoeae, and Candida albicans. Two compounds with 1,2-diaminocyclohexane as a nitrogenous side chain showed promising activity against the highly infectious MRSA USA300 strain, with a minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of 4 µg mL-1. One of these two compounds demonstrated potent activity against C. difficile, with a MIC of 4 µg mL-1. Moderate activities against a C. difficile strain with a MIC of 8 µg mL-1 were noted. Some new compounds possessed antifungal activity against a wild fluconazole-resistant C. albicans strain, with MIC values of 4-16 µg mL-1. ADME and metabolism-simulation studies were performed for the most promising compound and compared with lead compounds. Our results revealed that one compound possessed greater penetration of bacterial membranes and metabolic resistance, which aided a longer duration of action against MRSA.

OBJECTIVE: Microvascular decompression (MVD) is a well-established and highly effective treatment option for hemifacial spasm (HFS). Lateral spread response (LSR) has been used as an intraoperative indicator of HFS resolution, with controversial reliability. The purpose of this study was to determine long-term outcomes of MVD for HFS and the role of LSR and other preoperative predictors. METHODS: The authors conducted a cohort study of all patients treated with MVD for HFS at a single institution from January 1, 1998, to December 31, 2019. In addition to a retrospective chart review, all patients were contacted at the time of the study to provide informed consent and responded to a telephone survey to ascertain their current disease and medication status. Patients with at least 12 months of postoperative follow-up were included. Statistical testing included a Student t-test, Fisher's exact test, logistic regression, and Cox proportional hazards analysis. RESULTS: One hundred nineteen patients met study criteria; 41 (34%) had at least 10 years of clinical follow-up. HFS fully resolved in 93 (78%), symptoms subjectively improved in 11 (9%) and were unchanged in 15 (13%). Immediate postoperative HFS status did not correlate with long-term outcome (p = 0.13). Changes in LSR were not associated with outcome. Patients receiving neuromodulating agents had significantly longer preoperative duration of symptoms and were more likely to show persistent LSR intraoperatively. HFS recurrence was associated with younger age at the time of surgery but not with intraoperative LSR resolution. CONCLUSIONS: This study demonstrated that MVD for HFS is highly effective for most patients. Neither intraoperative LSR change nor immediate postoperative status was predictive of long-term outcomes.

In the current trend where plant-based foods are preferred over animal-based foods, pulses represent an alternative source of protein but also of bioactive peptides (BPs). We investigated the pattern of protein hydrolysis during fermentation of red lentils protein isolate (RLPI) with various lactic acid bacteria and yeast strains. Hanseniaspora uvarum SY1 and Fructilactobacillus sanfranciscensis E10 were the most proteolytic microorganisms. H. uvarum SY1 led to the highest antiradical, angiotensin-converting enzyme-inhibitory and antifungal activities, as found in low molecular weight water soluble extracts (LMW-WSE). The 2039 peptide sequences identified by LMW-WSE were screened using BIOPEP UWM database, and 36 sequences matched with known BPs. Fermentation of RLPI by lactic acid bacteria and yeasts generated 12 peptides undetected in raw RLPI. Besides, H. uvarum SY1 led to the highest abundance (peak areas) of BPs, in particular with antioxidant and ACE-inhibitory activities. The amino acid sequences LVR and LVL, identified in the fermented RLPI, represent novel findings, as they were detected for the first time in substrates subjected to microbial fermentation. KVI, another BP highly characteristic of RLPI-SY1, was previously observed only in dried bonito. 44 novel potential BPs, worthy of further characterization, were correlated with antifungal activity.

INTRODUCTION: Endovascular mechanical thrombectomy (MT) is an established treatment for large vessel occlusion strokes with a National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) score of 6 or higher. Data pertaining to minor strokes, medium, or distal vessel occlusions, and most effective MT technique is limited and controversial. METHODS: A multicenter retrospective study of all patients treated with MT presenting with NIHSS score of 5 or less at 29 comprehensive stroke centers. The cohort was dichotomized based on location of occlusion (proximal vs. distal) and divided based on MT technique (direct aspiration first-pass technique [ADAPT], stent retriever [SR], and primary combined [PC]). Outcomes at discharge and 90 days were compared between proximal and distal occlusion groups, and across MT techniques. RESULTS: The cohort included 759 patients, 34% presented with distal occlusion. Distal occlusions were more likely to present with atrial fibrillation (p = 0.008) and receive IV tPA (p = 0.001). Clinical outcomes at discharge and 90 days were comparable between proximal and distal groups. Compared to SR, patients managed with ADAPT were more likely to have a modified Rankin Scale of 0-2 at discharge and at 90 days (p = 0.024 and p = 0.013). Primary combined compared to ADAPT, prior stroke, multiple passes, older age, and longer procedure time were independently associated with worse clinical outcome, while successful recanalization was positively associated with good clinical outcomes. CONCLUSIONS: Proximal and distal occlusions with low NIHSS have comparable outcomes and safety profiles. While all MT techniques have a similar safety profile, ADAPT was associated with better clinical outcomes at discharge and 90 days.

The effect of ripening and in vitro digestion on the biological activities, peptide profiles and release of bioactive peptides in Ras cheese has been investigated. Ras cheese ripening largely influenced the extent of protein hydrolysis. The advancement in ripening resulted in an increase in total peptides (from 0.97 to 2.46 mmol leucine/g in samples at 30 and 180 days of ripening, respectively) and bioactive peptides concentration, especially angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE)-inhibitory, dipeptidyl-peptidase-IV-(DPP-IV)-inhibitory and antioxidant peptides. In vitro gastro-intestinal digestion further promoted protein hydrolysis and the release of bioactive peptides. Digested Ras cheese at 90 and 180 days of ripening displayed the highest bioactive peptides intensity. The variations in bioactive peptides amount during ripening and in vitro digestion were correlated with the changes in ACE-inhibitory, DPP-IV-inhibitory and antioxidant activities. The highest amounts of VPP and IPP were detected in digested Ras cheese at 90 days of ripening (17.44 and 36.50 mg/kg of cheese, respectively), whereas the highest concentrations of APFPE were found in undigested and digested 180-day ripened Ras cheese (82.09 and 52.01 mg/kg of cheese, respectively). The present investigation underlined potential differences in the biological effect after the ingestion of Ras cheese at different ripening times.

Three Streptococcus thermophilus strains, namely RBC6, RBC20, and RBN16, were proven to release bioactive peptides during whey protein concentrate (WPC) fermentation, resulting in WPC hydrolysates with biological activities. However, these bioactive peptides can break down during gastro-intestinal digestion (GID), hindering the health-promoting effect of fermented WPC hydrolysates in vivo. In this work, the effect of simulated GID on three WPC hydrolysates fermented with S. thermophilus strains, as well as on unfermented WPC was studied in terms of protein hydrolysis, biological activities, and peptidomics profiles, respectively. In general, WPC fermentation enhanced protein hydrolysis compared to unfermented WPC. After in vitro GID, WPC fermented with S. thermophilus RBC20 showed the highest antioxidant activity, whereas WPC fermented with strain RBC06 displayed the highest angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE)- and dipeptidyl peptidase IV (DPP-IV)-inhibitory activities. Peptidomics analysis revealed that all digested WPC samples were highly similar to each other in peptide profiles, and 85% of the 46 identified bioactive peptides were shared among fermented and unfermented samples. However, semi-quantitative analysis linked the observed differences in biological activities among the samples to differences in the amount of bioactive peptides. The anti-hypertensive peptides VPP and IPP, as well as the DPP-IV-inhibitory peptide APFPE, were quantified. In conclusion, WPC fermentation with S. thermophilus positively impacted protein hydrolysis and bioactive peptide release during GID.

Congenital inguinal hernia [CIH] can be treated laparoscopically using various methods documented in the literature. Many authors have recommended dividing the sac and stitching peritoneal defects. Other studies claimed that peritoneal disconnection alone is sufficient. In this study, the feasibility, operative time, recurrence rate, and other postoperative complications of needlescopic disconnection of the CIH sac with or without peritoneal defect suturing were compared. A prospective controlled randomized trial was conducted between January 2020 and December 2022. Two hundred and thirty patients who met the study requirements were included. Patients were assigned at random to either Group A or Group B. A group of 116 patients (Group A) had needlescopic separation of the neck of the sac and peritoneal defect closure. The remaining 114 patients (Group B) underwent needlescopic separation without peritoneal defect closure (Sutureless group). A total of 260 hernial defects in 230 patients were repaired using needlescopic disconnection with or without suturing of the defect. There were 89 females (38.7%) and 141 males (61.3%), with a mean age of 5.14 ± 2.79 years. In Group A, the mean operation time was 27.98 ± 2.89 for a unilateral hernia and 37.29 ± 4.68 for a bilateral one, whereas, in Group B, the mean operation time was 20.37 ± 2.37 and 23.38 ± 2.22 for a unilateral and bilateral hernia, respectively. In terms of the operating time, whether unilateral or bilateral, there was a significant difference between the groups. There was no significant difference between groups A and B in the mean Internal Ring Diameter [IRD], which was 1.21 ± 0.18 cm in group A and 1.19 ± 0.11 cm in group B. Throughout the follow-up period, there was no postoperative hydrocele formation, recurrence, iatrogenic ascending of the testes, or testicular atrophy. All patients had nearly invisible scars with no keloid development at 3 months follow-up. Needlescopically separating the hernia sac without stitching the peritoneal defect is feasible, safe, and less invasive. It provides outstanding cosmetic results with a short operative time and no recurrence.

PURPOSE: We aimed to assess the clinical and radiological outcomes of a modified anatomical posterolateral corner (PLC) reconstruction technique using a single autograft. METHODS: This prospective case series included 19 patients with a posterolateral corner injury. The posterolateral corner was reconstructed using a modified anatomical technique that utilized adjustable suspensory fixation on the tibial side. Patients were evaluated subjectively using the international knee documentation form (IKDC), Lysholm, and Tegner activity scales and objectively by measuring the tibial external rotation angle, knee hyperextension, and lateral joint line opening on stress varus radiographs before and after surgery. The patients were followed-up for a minimum of 2 years. RESULTS: Both IKDC and Lysholm knee scores significantly improved from 49 and 53 preoperatively to 77 and 81 postoperatively, respectively. The tibial external rotation angle and knee hyperextension showed significant reduction to normal values at the final follow-up. However, the lateral joint line opening measured on the varus stress radiograph remained larger than the contralateral normal knee. CONCLUSION: Posterolateral corner reconstruction with a hamstring autograft using a modified anatomical reconstruction technique significantly improved both the subjective patient scores and objective knee stability. However, the varus stability was not completely restored compared with the uninjured knee. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: Prospective case series (Level of evidence IV).

Mindfulness is a multi-faceted construct that involves paying attention to thoughts and emotions without automatically reacting and being critical of them. Recent research has suggested that mindfulness might play an important role in reducing problematic alcohol use. Further, Readiness to Change (RTC) is related to motivation to change drinking behaviours. The RTC scale identifies motivation to change drinking behaviours including Precontemplation, Contemplation, and Action stages. The current study investigated, for the first time, the relationship between mindfulness (and its facets) and RTC in relation to drinking behaviours. Undergraduate students from Western Sydney University (N = 279) were screened for drinking levels using the Alcohol Use Disorder Identification Test (AUDIT) and then completed the Readiness to Change Questionnaire (RCT) and the Five Facets Mindfulness Questionnaire (FFMQ), which includes the following facets: Acting with Awareness, Non-Judging of Inner Experience, Non-Reactivity to Inner Experience, Describing, and Observing. Results show that overall, mindfulness and its facets negatively correlated with RTC. Multiple regression analysis further showed that Awareness and Non-Judgement facets negatively predicted RTC. These findings provide insight into how the facets of mindfulness interact with the drinking motives of individuals and their intentions to change drinking behaviours. Based on these findings, we recommend the incorporation of mindfulness techniques in interventions targeting problematic drinking.

Heterogeneous catalysis is widely known as an efficient, clean, and low-cost technology to mitigate the environmental pollution of industrial effluents. This research aimed at optimizing the preparation and characterization of efficient g-C3N4/Co3O4 nanocomposite for catalytic removal of Rhodamine B (Rh B) dye. The detected XRD peaks for the prepared nano-Co3O4 are matched with the cubic crystal structure. In contrast, the broad peak at 27.3° corresponding to the graphite reflection of hkl (002) was noticeably weakened in the XRD pattern of the g-C3N4/Co3O4 composite. FTIR spectra of g-C3N4/Co3O4 nanocomposites revealed the active vibrational modes of each Co3O4 and g-C3N4 component. The microstructure study of g-C3N4 showed the strong interlayer stacking of carbon nitride nanosheets, while the surface morphology of g-C3N4/Co3O4 nanocomposite revealed a hybrid particulate system. EDS analysis indicated that the spot area of g-C3N4/Co3O4 confirmed the chemical ratios of carbon, nitrogen, cobalt, and oxygen. BET measurements of g-C3N4/Co3O4 showed a significant increase in the surface area and pore volume of single components due to the lamination of stacked g-C3N4 nanosheets by the intercalated Co3O4 nanoparticles. The prepared 30% g-C3N4/Co3O4 revealed the lowest value of Eg ~1.2 eV and the highest light absorptivity suggesting strong promotion for the photocatalytic performance under visible light. The maximum photocatalytic activity of about 87% was achieved by 30% g-C3N4/Co3O4 due to the photonic enhancement, which reduces the recombination of excited electrons. The developed nanocomposite with a g-C3N4/Co3O4 ratio of 0.3 exhibited high stability in its photocatalytic performance after four recycling times, and a slight decrease of about 7% was estimated after the 5th reuse test.

Our study investigated the chemical, microbiological, and bioactive peptide profiles of Asiago Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) cheese from two dairies (Dairy I and II) produced over two consecutive days (batches) and analysed during three months of ripening. The effect of different starter cultures was evaluated. The microbiome varied between the dairies and batches, with curds post-salting dominated by the starter culture-associated genera. During ripening, there was an increasing trend in the Lactobacillus genus, especially for Dairy I, which used an industrial starter. Bioactive peptide intensities differed throughout ripening due to the extent of proteolysis, and their intensity or concentration evolved, modifying, and differentiating profiles. The industrial starter used in Dairy I had the highest relative intensity (average value 76.50%) of bioactive peptides after three months of ripening. In contrast, the cheeses made with natural milk starter (Dairy II) had lower total relative intensity (average value 47.75%) but produced ACE-inhibitory peptides through sub-dominant strains and non-starter lactic acid bacteria. The importance of autochthonous strains of each micro-region even within a delimited PDO production area was highlighted.

Several recent published studies reported that cheese consumption may protect against the onset of cardiovascular diseases and type-2 diabetes due to the presence of bioactive peptides. In the present work, six cheese varieties (the Egyptian traditional cheeses Karish, Domiati and Ras as well as Feta-type, Gouda and Edam cheeses) were characterized for their peptidomics profiles with high-resolution mass spectrometry, biological activities and content in bioactive peptides. The highest ACE-inhibitory and DPP-IV-inhibitory activities were found in Gouda cheese, which also displayed the highest antioxidant activity. A total of 809 peptides originating from the major milk proteins were identified, and 82 of them were bioactive. Most of them showed ACE-inhibitory, antioxidant and DPP-IV-inhibitory activities. The highest amount of the in vivo anti-hypertensive tripeptides VPP and IPP was found in Gouda cheese (39.19 ± 1.26 and 17.72 ± 0.89 mg/100 g of cheese, respectively), whereas the highest amount of APFPE was detected in Edam cheese (509.13 ± 20.44 mg/100 g of cheese). These results suggest that the intake of Edam, Domiati and, especially, Gouda cheeses may result in a possible anti-hypertensive effect in hypertensive subjects.

OBJECTIVE: Pineal cyst (PC) is a relatively common true cyst in the pineal gland. Its long-term natural course remains ill defined. This study aims to evaluate the long-term natural history of PC and examine MRI risk factors for cyst growth and shrinkage to help better define which patients might benefit from surgical intervention. METHODS: The records and MRI of 409 consecutive patients with PC were retrospectively examined (nonsurgical cohort). Cyst growth and shrinkage were defined as a ≥ 2-mm increase and decrease in cyst diameter in any direction, respectively. In addition to size, MRI signal intensity ratios were analyzed. RESULTS: The median radiological follow-up period was 10.7 years (interquartile range [IQR] 6.4-14.3 years). The median change in maximal diameter was -0.6 mm (IQR -1.5 to 1.3 mm). During the observation period, cyst growth was confirmed in 21 patients (5.1%). Multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed that only age (odds ratio [OR] 0.96, 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.93-0.99, p < 0.01) was significantly associated with cyst growth. No patient required resection during the observation period. Cyst shrinkage was confirmed in 57 patients (13.9%). Multivariate analysis revealed that maximal diameter (OR 1.22, 95% CI 1.12-1.35, p < 0.01) and cyst CSF T2 signal intensity ratio (OR 9.06, 95% CI 1.38-6.62 × 101, p = 0.02) were significantly associated with cyst shrinkage. CONCLUSIONS: Only 5% of PCs, mainly in patients younger than 50 years of age, have the potential to grow, while cyst shrinkage is more likely to occur across all age groups. Younger age is associated with cyst growth, while larger diameter and higher signal intensity on T2-weighted imaging are associated with shrinkage. Surgery is rarely needed for PCs, despite the possibility of a certain degree of growth.

Maghemite (γ-Fe2O3) nanoparticles (MNPs) were functionalized with 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES) to give APTES@Fe2O3 (AMNP) which was then reacted with diethylenetriamine-pentaacetic acid (DTPA) to give a nanohybrid DTPA-APTES@Fe2O3 (DAMNP). Nano-isothermal titration calorimetry shows that DTPA complexation with uranyl ions in water is exothermic and has a stoichiometry of two DTPA to three uranyl ions. Density functional theory calculations indicate the possibility of several complexes between DTPA and UO22+ with different stoichiometries. Interactions between uranyl ions and DAMNP functional groups are revealed by X-photoelectron and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopies. Spherical aberration-corrected Scanning Transmission Electron Microscopy visualizes uranium on the particle surface. Adsorbent performance metrics were evaluated by batch adsorption studies under different conditions of pH, initial uranium concentration and contact time, and the results expressed in terms of equilibrium adsorption capacities (qe) and partition coefficients (PC). By either criterion, performance increases from MNP to AMNP to DAMNP, with the maximum uptake at pH 5.5 in all cases: MNP, qe = 63 mg g-1, PC = 127 mg g-1 mM-1; AMNP, qe = 165 mg g-1, PC = 584 mg g-1 mM-1; DAMNP, qe = 249 mg g-1, PC = 2318 mg g-1 mM-1 (at 25 °C; initial U concentration 0.63 mM; 5 mg adsorbent in 10 mL of solution; contact time, 3 h). The pH maximum is related to the predominance of mono- and di-cationic uranium species. Uptake by DAMNPs follows a pseudo-first-order or pseudo-second-order kinetic model and fits a variety of adsorption models. The maximum adsorption capacity for DAMNPs is higher than for other functionalized magnetic nanohybrids. This adsorbent can be regenerated and recycled for at least 10 cycles with less than 10% loss in activity, and shows high selectivity. These findings suggest that DAMNP could be a promising adsorbent for the recovery of uranium from nuclear wastewaters.

OVERVIEW: Calcaneus deformity of the foot is common in patients with myelodysplasia, mainly due to muscle imbalance. This deformity, especially in ambulatory patients, can result in gait problems and development of pressure sores, which can be complicated by calcaneal osteomyelitis. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This retrospective cross-sectional study included 12 patients (18 feet), with calcaneus deformity due to myelomeningocele, and presented with penetrating heel ulcers complicated by calcaneal osteomyelitis. The mean age of the included cases was 11 years. The ulcers were unilateral in six patients and bilateral in six. Sensation was absent on the plantar aspect of the foot in all cases. The treatment was done in two stages; The first stage was eradication of infection and obtaining good soft tissue coverage, and the second stage was obtaining motor balance to achieve a more plantigrade and braceable foot. RESULTS: The average follow-up period was 19.2 months. In the final follow-up, twelve feet were graded as good, five as fair and one as poor according to Legaspi grading system. CONCLUSION: The combination of partial calcanectomy and subsequent transfer of tibialis anterior tendon, to improve the foot position and gait, can efficiently prevent ulcer recurrence in myelomeningocele patients with calcaneal deformity. Background: The etiopathogeny of chronic spontaneous urticaria (CSU) is not well defined. Allelism in glutathione S-transferase GSTM1 and GSTT1 has been suggested as a risk factor. Desloratadine is the first-line treatment for this disease. Objective: This study aimed to investigate the efficacy of a first-line treatment: desloratadine 5 mg/day on antioxidant status and clinical assessment in Tunisian patients with CSU and to identify possible associations between GSTT1 and GSTM1 genotypes and susceptibility to CSU. Methods: Sixty patients with CSU and 60 age- and gender-matched healthy controls were included in the study. We calculated the urticaria activity score (UAS) and assessed the antioxidant parameters (total antioxidant status [TAS], glutathione S-transferase [GST], SOD, CAT, GPx]). Multiplex PCR was performed to find the relationship between GSTM1 and GSTT1 polymorphisms with CSU susceptibility. Results: At baseline, GST, GPx, CAT, SOD activities, and TAS were significantly lower in CSU patients compared to healthy controls (P < 0.05). After treatment, GST, GPx, CAT, SOD activities and TAS were significantly increased in patients compared to those before treatment (P < 0.001). We observed a significant association in null alleles of GSTM1. Before treatment, GST activity was significantly lower in patients having GSTM1+ genotype than those having GSTM1- genotype (P = 0.001). After treatment, TAS and antioxidant enzymes GST, GPx, SOD, and CAT were significantly elevated in patients having GSTM1- genotype than those having GSTM1+ genotype (P < 0.05). Conclusion: These results suggest the impact of GSTM1 and GSTT1 on CSU susceptibility and desloratadine efficacy in Tunisian patients.
