BACKGROUND: Coral-associated microbiomes vary greatly between colonies and localities with functional consequences on the host. However, the full extent of variability across the ranges of most coral species remains unknown, especially for corals living in deep waters which span greater ranges. Here, we characterized the microbiomes of four octocoral species from mesophotic and bathyal deep-sea habitats in the northern Gulf of Mexico, Muricea pendula, Swiftia exserta, Callogorgia delta, and Paramuricea biscaya, using 16S rRNA gene metabarcoding. We sampled extensively across their ranges to test for microbiome differentiation between and within species, examining the influence of environmental factors that vary with depth (53-2224 m) and geographic location (over 680 m) as well as the host coral's genotype using RAD-sequencing. RESULTS: Coral microbiomes were often dominated by amplicon sequence variants whose abundances varied across their hosts' ranges, including symbiotic taxa: corallicolids, Endozoicomonas, members of the Mollicutes, and the BD1-7 clade. Coral species, depth, and geographic location significantly affected diversity, microbial community composition, and the relative abundance of individual microbes. Depth was the strongest environmental factor determining microbiome structure within species, which influenced the abundance of most dominant symbiotic taxa. Differences in host genotype, bottom temperature, and surface primary productivity could explain a significant part of the microbiome variation associated with depth and geographic location. CONCLUSIONS: Altogether, this work demonstrates that the microbiomes of corals in deep waters vary substantially across their ranges in accordance with depth and other environmental conditions. It reveals that the influence of depth on the ecology of mesophotic and deep-sea corals extends to its effects on their microbiomes which may have functional consequences. This work also identifies the distributions of microbes including potential parasites which can be used to inform restoration plans in response to the Deepwater Horizon oil spill.

RESUMO

A new family of antipatharian corals, Ameripathidae (Cnidaria: Anthozoa: Antipatharia), is established for Ameripathespseudomyriophylla Opresko & Horowitz, gen. et sp. nov. The new family resembles Myriopathidae and Stylopathidae in terms of the morphology of the polyps and tentacles and the pinnulate branching of the corallum. Phylogenetic analysis using a genomic data set of 741 conserved element loci indicates that the new family is sister to a clade containing the Myriopathidae, Stylopathidae, Antipathidae, and Aphanipathidae.

Numerous genomic methods developed over the past two decades have enabled the discovery and extraction of orthologous loci to help resolve phylogenetic relationships across various taxa and scales. Genome skimming (or low-coverage genome sequencing) is a promising method to not only extract high-copy loci but also 100s to 1000s of phylogenetically informative nuclear loci (e.g., ultraconserved elements [UCEs] and exons) from contemporary and museum samples. The subphylum Anthozoa, including important ecosystem engineers (e.g., stony corals, black corals, anemones, and octocorals) in the marine environment, is in critical need of phylogenetic resolution and thus might benefit from a genome-skimming approach. We conducted genome skimming on 242 anthozoan corals collected from 1886 to 2022. Using existing target-capture baitsets, we bioinformatically obtained UCEs and exons from the genome-skimming data and incorporated them with data from previously published target-capture studies. The mean number of UCE and exon loci extracted from the genome skimming data was 1837 ± 662 SD for octocorals and 1379 ± 476 SD loci for hexacorals. Phylogenetic relationships were well resolved within each class. A mean of 1422 ± 720 loci was obtained from the historical specimens, with 1253 loci recovered from the oldest specimen collected in 1886. We also obtained partial to whole mitogenomes and nuclear rRNA genes from >95% of samples. Bioinformatically pulling UCEs, exons, mitochondrial genomes, and nuclear rRNA genes from genome skimming data is a viable and low-cost option for phylogenetic studies. This approach can be used to review and support taxonomic revisions and reconstruct evolutionary histories, including historical museum and type specimens.

BACKGROUND: Both progestogens and cerclage are individually effective in preterm birth prevention in high risk pregnancies. However, national and international guidelines cite a lack of data available to comment on the potential benefit of concurrent progestogen therapy after cerclage has been placed. Studies to date have been small with mixed results regarding benefit of concurrent progestogen with cerclage leaving uncertainty regarding best clinical practice. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate whether cerclage with progestogen therapy was superior to cerclage alone in the prevention of spontaneous preterm birth in singleton pregnancies. METHODS: This is an international retrospective cohort study of singleton pregnancies, without major anomaly or aneuploidy, and with cerclage placed at 10 different institutions in the United States and Colombia from June 2016 to June 2020. Exclusion criteria were lack of documentation regarding whether progestogen was prescribed, unavailable delivery outcome, and pregnancy termination (spontaneous or induced) before 16 weeks' gestation. The exposure of interest was progestogen use with cerclage placement, which included those who continued to use progestogen or who started progestogen after cerclage. The comparison group consisted of those without progestogen use after cerclage placement, which included those who had no progestogen use during the entire pregnancy or who initiated progestogen and then stopped it after cerclage placement. Progestogen type, cerclage indication, maternal baseline characteristics, and maternal/neonatal outcomes were collected. The primary outcome was spontaneous preterm birth at <37 weeks. The secondary outcomes were spontaneous preterm birth at <34 weeks, gestational age at delivery, and a composite neonatal outcome including ≥1 of the following: perinatal mortality, confirmed sepsis, grade III or IV intraventricular hemorrhage, retinopathy of prematurity, respiratory distress syndrome, and bronchopulmonary dysplasia. There were planned subgroup analyses by cerclage indication, progestogen type (vaginal progesterone vs 17-hydroxyprogesterone caproate), preterm birth history, and site. Continuous variables were compared in adjusted analyses with analysis of covariance, and categorical variables were compared with multivariable logistic regression, adjusting for potential confounders with adjusted odds ratio. A Cox regression survival curve was generated to compare latency to spontaneous delivery, censored after 37 weeks. RESULTS: During the study period, a total of 699 singletons met the inclusion criteria: 561 in the progestogen with cerclage group and 138 with cerclage alone. Baseline characteristics were similar, except the higher likelihood of previous spontaneous preterm birth in the progestogen group (61% vs 41%; P<.001). Within the progestogen group, 52% were on 17-hydroxyprogesterone caproate weekly, 44% on vaginal progesterone daily, and 3% on oral progesterone daily. Progestogen with cerclage was associated with a significantly lower frequency of spontaneous preterm birth <37 weeks (31% vs 39%; adjusted odds ratio, 0.59 [0.39-0.89]; P=.01) and <34 weeks (19% vs 27%; adjusted odds ratio, 0.55 [0.35-0.87]; P=.01), increased latency to spontaneous delivery (hazard ratio for spontaneous preterm birth <37 weeks, 0.66 [0.49-0.90]; P=.009), and lower frequency of perinatal death (7% vs 16%; adjusted odds ratio, 0.37 [0.20-0.67]; P=.001). In planned subgroup analyses, association with reduced odds of preterm birth <37 weeks persisted in those on vaginal progesterone, those without a previous preterm birth, those with ultrasound- or examination-indicated cerclage, those who started progestogen therapy before cerclage, and in sites restricted to the United States. CONCLUSION: Use of progestogen with cerclage was associated with reduced rates of spontaneous preterm birth and early spontaneous preterm birth compared with cerclage alone. Although this study was not sufficiently powered for subgroup analysis, the strength of evidence for benefit appeared greatest for those with ultrasound- or examination-indicated cerclage, and with vaginal progesterone.

Reactive oxygen species (ROS) are central to diverse biological processes through which organisms respond to and interact with their surroundings. Yet, a lack of direct measurements limits our understanding of the distribution of ROS in the ocean. Using a recently developed in situ sensor, we show that deep-sea corals and sponges produce the ROS superoxide, revealing that benthic organisms can be sources and hotspots of ROS production in these environments. These findings confirm previous contentions that extracellular superoxide production by corals can be independent of the activity of photosynthetic symbionts. The discovery of deep-sea corals and sponges as sources of ROS has implications for the physiology and ecology of benthic organisms and introduces a previously overlooked suite of redox reactants at depth.

Background: This systematic review was performed to analyze the therapeutic efficacy of photobiomodulation (PBM) in managing oral mucositis (OM) that appears in this context. Material and Methods: The search strategy of the systematic review was conducted according to PRISMA guidelines. The eligibility criteria according to PICO process has been defined as follows: Population (P): adult patients with head and neck cancer; Intervention (I): PBM; Comparison (C): placebo group; Outcome (O): pain, oral quality of life (QoL), evolution of the grade OM and pain. The set criteria for inclusion were peer-reviewed articles. Results: The following database were searched from November 2021 to February 2022, for clinical trials: Pubmed, Scopus and Cochrane. From 296 records, 10 studies were included involving in the systematic review. Data from 759 patients who received chemoradiotherapy were analyzed. These studies used different classifications for oral mucositis (WHO, NCI, RTOF/EORTC), pain (VAS) and quality of life (EORTC QLQ-C30, UW-QOL (v4), FACT-HN). PBM therapy protocol used five different lasers (GaAlAs, InGaAlP, He-Ne, diode laser, red and near-IR LED probe) with wavelengths ranging from 632,8nm to 850nm. Pain evaluation in was based on the visual analogue scale (VAS) mainly. Prophylactic PBM was effective as it reduced the incidence of grades 3-4 and reduced the overall mean grade of OM during the chemoradiotherapy course compared to the control group. On the other hand, when PBM was used for treatment purposes, it decreased the mean duration of OM compared to the placebo arm. Conclusions: PBM reduced the incidence of more severe grade of OM induced by chemoradiotherapy. Also, PBM therapy reduced the mean duration of severe OM, mean pain scores and subsequently improved QoL. Background: To determine whether photodynamic laser therapy or photothermal laser therapy demonstrates greater improvements in the clinical signs of peri-implant mucositis as an adjuvant to mechanical debridement. Material and Methods: Electronic databases were used to select articles on February 10th, 2022. The clinical outcomes analysed were the plaque index (PI), probing depth (PD) and bleeding of probing index (BoP). The following PICO question was formulated: Among patients with peri-implant mucositis, does photothermal laser therapy (PT) demonstrate greater improvement in clinical inflammatory signs in comparison to antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) as an adjuvant to conventional therapy? Results: Seven randomized controlled trials (RCTs) were included in the systematic review. The clinical parameters were compared amongst all studies at baseline and 3-month follow-up appointment. aPDT reduced both PI and PD great than PT. PT showed greater reductions in BoP. Conclusions: Conclusions are difficult to generalize due to the heterogeneity in the methodology of the included studies. However, this systematic review suggests that aPDT alongside mechanical debridement demonstrated greater improvements in the PI and PD. Other factors besides the laser therapy itself may account for these findings. As for BoP index, PT demonstrated greater improvements due to its photo-biomodulating effects. Clinical Relevance: In patients with peri-implant mucositis, the combination of photothermal diode laser therapy and mechanical debridement entails promising results in treating and preventing the progression of the pathology. Background: Saliva modulates the environment of the oral biofilm through pH buffer, microbial attachment to host surfaces, and nutritional source. The ecology of stress occurs when a physical factor adversely impacts an ecosystem or its biotic components. Therefore, reduced salivary flow can affect oral-host balance. The leading causes of hyposalivation include disease-associated Sjögren's syndrome (SS) and menopausal women as aging-associated. However, little is known about the oral microbiome integrated with sex hormones in hyposalivation. This study aimed to characterize the hyposalivation microbiome caused by aging or disease affecting the salivary glands in women. Methods: We included 50 women older than 40 years of age in any menopausal phase. We collected stimulated saliva from 25 women diagnosed with SS (SS) and 25 without SS (non-SS). The bacterial profile of the patients was obtained by 16S rRNA sequencing. Bioinformatics analysis used machine learning to analyze the cohort's signs, symptoms, and bacterial profile. Salivary estradiol as a sex hormone variation level was determined. Results: We obtained that 79% of the SS group, and 52% of the non-SS group had hyposalivation. We found a negatively correlated Prevotella-age and Rothia-estradiol in the SS group. Highlight, we found that the cause of the hyposalivation in the study did not explain differences in microbial diversity comparing non-SS and SS groups. Therefore, microbial communities found in hyposalivation but not related to systemic conditions suggest that changes in the oral environment might underpin host-microbial balance. Conclusion: The salivary microbiome was similar in women with and without SS. However, hyposalivation showed two distinctive clusters associated with the bacterial population profiles. Our study suggests that local ecological disturbances could drive the change in the microbiome.

Designing effective drug nanocarriers that are easy to synthesize, robust, and nontoxic is a significant challenge in nanomedicine. Polyamine-multivalent molecule nanocomplexes are promising drug carriers due to their simple and all-aqueous manufacturing process. However, these systems can present issues of colloidal instability over time and cellular toxicity due to the cationic polymer. In this study, we finely modulate the formation parameters of poly(allylamine-tripolyphosphate) complexes to jointly optimize the robustness and safety. Polyallylamine was ionically assembled with tripolyphosphate anions to form liquid-like nanocomplexes with a size of around 200 nm and a zeta potential of -30 mV. We found that nanocomplexes exhibit tremendous long-term stability (9 months of storage) in colloidal dispersion and that they are suitable as protein-loading agents. Moreover, the formation of nanocomplexes induced by tripolyphosphate anions produces a switch-off in the toxicity of the system by altering the overall charge from positive to negative. In addition, we demonstrate that nanocomplexes can be internalized by bone-marrow-derived macrophage cells. Altogether, these nanocomplexes have attractive and promising properties as delivery nanoplatforms for potential therapies based on the immune system activation.

This work reports the phase behavior and electrochemical properties of liquid coacervates made of ferricyanide and poly(ethylenimine). In contrast to the typical polyanion/polycation pairs used in liquid coacervates, the ferricyanide/poly(ethylenimine) system is highly asymmetric because poly(ethylenimine) has approximately 170 charges per molecule, while ferricyanide has only 3. Two types of phase diagrams were measured and fitted with a theoretical model. In the first type of diagram, the stability of the coacervate was studied in the plane given by the concentration of poly(ethylenimine) versus the concentration of ferricyanide for a fixed concentration of added monovalent salt (NaCl). The second type of diagram involved the plane given by the concentration of poly(ethylenimine) vs the concentration of the added monovalent salt for a fixed poly(ethyleneimine)/ferricyanide ratio. Interestingly, these phase diagrams displayed qualitative similarities to those of symmetric polyanion/polycation systems, suggesting that coacervates formed by a polyelectrolyte and a small multivalent ion can be treated as a specific case of polyelectrolyte coacervate. The characterization of the electrochemical properties of the coacervate revealed that the addition of monovalent salt greatly enhances charge transport, presumably by breaking ion pairs between ferricyanide and poly(ethylenimine). This finding highlights the significant influence of added salt on the transport properties of coacervates. This study provides the first comprehensive characterization of the phase behavior and transport properties of asymmetric coacervates and places these results within the broader context of the better-known symmetric polyelectrolyte coacervates.

Background: The high resorption rate of intra-oral Onlay block grafts, coupled with morbidity and limited bone availability, means that the use of guided bone regeneration (GBR) may be preferable for vertical augmentation of mandibular atrophic posterior sectors. Aims: To evaluate the bone gain and surface resorption of the intraoral Onlay block graft compared to the GBR; as well as to study postoperative complications, survival and success rates of dental implant, and peri-implant marginal bone loss. Material and Methods: An electronic search was performed in the PubMed, Scopus, and Web Of Science databases on bone augmentation with intraoral autologous onlay block graft or GBR until December 2021. Results: Of 214 potentially eligible papers, 11 complied with the inclusion criteria: 5 studies on block graft technique, 5 on GBR technique and 1 was a comparison of both treatment groups. In the block graft group, the mean vertical bone gain was 4.05mm with a mean resorption of 0.84mm (17.70%); the complication rate was 20%; the survival and success rates were 100% and 92.23% respectively and the mean peri-implant bone loss was 0.22mm at 12 months. For the GBR group, the mean bone gain was 4.7mm with a mean resorption of 0.33mm (15.08%); the complication rate was 11.6%; the survival rate was 100% and the mean peri-implant bone loss was 0.95mm at 12 months. Conclusions: Despite the limitations, the GBR technique seems to achieve greater bone gain with less superficial resorption as well as fewer complications, but it presents a greater peri-implant loss at 12 months. Like their shallow-water counterparts, cold-water corals create reefs that support highly diverse communities, and these structures are subject to numerous anthropogenic threats. Here, we present the genome assembly of Lophelia pertusa from the southeastern coast of the USA, the first one for a deep-sea scleractinian coral species. We generated PacBio continuous long reads data for an initial assembly and proximity ligation data for scaffolding. The assembly was annotated using evidence from transcripts, proteins, and ab initio gene model predictions. This assembly is comparable to high-quality reference genomes from shallow-water scleractinian corals. The assembly comprises 2,858 scaffolds (N50 1.6 Mbp) and has a size of 556.9 Mbp. Approximately 57% of the genome comprises repetitive elements and 34% of coding DNA. We predicted 41,089 genes, including 91.1% of complete metazoan orthologs. This assembly will facilitate investigations into the ecology of this species and the evolution of deep-sea corals.

The complexation of polyelectrolytes with other oppositely charged structures gives rise to a great variety of functional materials with potential applications in a wide spectrum of technological fields. Depending on the assembly conditions, polyelectrolyte complexes can acquire different macroscopic configurations such as dense precipitates, nanosized colloids and liquid coacervates. In the past 50 years, much progress has been achieved to understand the principles behind the phase separation induced by the interaction of two oppositely charged polyelectrolytes in aqueous solutions, especially for symmetric systems (systems in which both polyions have similar molecular weight and concentration). However, in recent years, the complexation of polyelectrolytes with alternative building blocks such as small charged molecules (multivalent inorganic species, oligopeptides, and oligoamines, among others) has gained attention in different areas. In this review, we discuss the physicochemical characteristics of the complexes formed by polyelectrolytes and multivalent small molecules, putting a special emphasis on their similarities with the well-known polycation-polyanion complexes. In addition, we analyze the potential of these complexes to act as versatile functional platforms in various technological fields, such as biomedicine and advanced materials engineering.

Introducción y objetivo: La liposucción es la segunda cirugía más frecuente en Cirugía Plástica Estética. Dentro de sus complicaciones mayores se encuentra la trombosis venosa profunda (prevalencia del 0.06%), mientras que el tromboembolismo pulmonar representa el 23% de las muertes en lipoaspiración. Si bien existen diferentes escalas para estratificar el riesgo de trombosis, siendo el más conocido el de índice de Caprini (año 2005), ninguno es específico para la lipoaspiración.Nuestro objetivo es realizar una revisión bibliográfica sobre la estratificación de riesgo de enfermedad tromboembólica venosa en pacientes de Cirugía Plástica Estética a los que se realiza lipoaspiración, con el fin de generar evidencia científica que contribuya a la toma de decisiones por parte de los cirujanos plásticos.Material y método: Revisión narrativa mediante una búsqueda bibliográfica en Pubmed y Google Scholar con las palabras clave “thromboembolism”, “thrombosis” y “liposuction”, de los artículos publicados en los últimos 5 años. Las variables analizadas fueron factores de riesgo incluidos en Caprini 2005 además de otros factores analizados para lipoaspiracion, no incluidos en Caprini 2005.Resultados: Obtuvimos un total de 11 artículos que describen para cirugías de lipoaspiración los siguientes factores de riesgo incluidos en Caprini 2005: edad, terapia de reemplazo hormonal, historia familiar de trombosis, índice de masa corporal y tiempo quirúrgico. Además, mencionan los siguientes factores no incluidos en Caprini: volumen lipoaspirado, tipo de anestesia, género del paciente, lugar de la cirugía y asociación de procedimientos. (AU)


Background and objective: Liposuction is the second most frequent surgery in Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. Among its major complications is deep vein thrombosis (prevalence of 0.06%), while pulmonary thromboembolism represents 23% of deaths in liposuction. Although there are different scales to stratify the risk of thrombosis, the best known being the Caprini score (year 2005), none is specific for liposuction.Our objective is to carry out a bibliographic review on the risk stratification of venous thromboembolic disease in Aesthetic Plastic Surgery patients who underwent liposuction, in order to generate scientific evidence that contributes to the decision-making of plastic surgeons.Methods: Narrative review through a bibliographic search carried out in Pubmed and Google Scholar with the keywords "thromboembolism", "thrombosis" and "liposuction" of the articles published in the last 5 years. The variables analyzed were risk factors included in Caprini 2005, in addition to other factors analyzed for liposuction not included in Caprini 2005.Results: We obtained a total of 11 articles which describe the following risk factors for liposuction surgeries included in Caprini 2005: age, hormone replacement therapy, family history of thrombosis, body mass index and surgical time. In addition, they mention the following factors not included in Caprini: lipoaspirated volume, type of anesthesia, patient gender, place of surgery and association of procedures. (AU)

RESUMEN INTRODUCCIÓN: Los pacientes con compromiso del sistema inmune pueden desarrollar una enfermedad neurológica incapacitante e incluso mortal, como lo es la leucoencefalopatía multifocal progresiva (LMP) producida por el virus de John Cunningham (JC). PRESENTACIÓN DEL CASO: Se presenta el caso de un hombre de 26 años con diagnóstico reciente de infección por virus de la inmunodeficiencia humana (VIH) que presentó síntomas constitucionales, déficit neurológico progresivo por hemiparesia espástica izquierda, disminución de la agudeza visual y cambios comportamentales. En las imágenes de resonancia magnética (IRM) cerebral contrastada se encontró afectación subcortical difusa de la sustancia blanca con compromiso de las fibras en U que, correlacionado con una prueba de reacción en cadena de la polimerasa (PCR) para virus JC en LCR, confirmó el diagnóstico de LMP. DISCUSIÓN: La LMP puede manifestarse por medio de síntomas cognitivos usualmente imperceptibles para el clínico, pero también como déficit sensorio-motor y visual que se puede corroborar en las IRM al identificar las lesiones típicas en la sustancia blanca, o bien por medio de detección del virus por PCR en líquido cefalorraquídeo. El manejo específico de la causa que desencadenó la inmunosupresión sigue siendo el pilar de tratamiento. CONCLUSIÓN: La mínima sospecha diagnóstica en aquellos pacientes con factores de riesgo y manifestaciones clínicas concordantes con la enfermedad debe llevar a que se confirme el diagnóstico y que se inicie prontamente el manejo terapéutico en búsqueda de restablecer la respuesta inmune.


ABSTRACT INTRODUCTION: Patients with immunocompromised or weakened immune system can develop a disabling and even life-threatening neurological disorder such as progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML) caused by John Cunningham (JC) virus. CASE PRESENTATION: We present the case of a 26-year-old man with a recent diagnosis of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection who presented constitutional symptoms, progressive neurological deficit due to left spastic hemiparesis with decreased visual acuity and behavioral changes. The brain Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) showed diffuse subcortical involvement of the white matter including the U-fibers, which, correlated with a detection of JC virus DNA by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) cerebrospinal fluid, confirmed the diagnosis of PML. DISCUSSION: PML can range from subtle cognitive impairment imperceptible to the clinician to sensory-motor deficits and visual disturbances that can be corroborated in MRI by identifying the typical lesions in the white matter or by detecting the virus by PCR in cerebrospinal fluid. The specific management of the cause that triggered the immunosuppression continues to be the mainstay of treatment. CONCLUSION: At the minimum diagnostic suspicion in patients with risk factors and clinical manifestations consistent with the disease should proceed to confirm the diagnosis and promptly immune reconstitution.

Comprehensive knowledge of the distribution of active hydrothermal vent fields along midocean ridges is essential to understanding global chemical and heat fluxes and endemic faunal distributions. However, current knowledge is biased by a historical preference for on-axis surveys. A scarcity of high-resolution bathymetric surveys in off-axis regions limits vent identification, which implies that the number of vents may be underestimated. Here, we present the discovery of an active, high-temperature, off-axis hydrothermal field on a fast-spreading ridge. The vent field is located 750 m east of the East Pacific Rise axis and ∼7 km north of on-axis vents at 9° 50'N, which are situated in a 50- to 100-m-wide trough. This site is currently the largest vent field known on the East Pacific Rise between 9 and 10° N. Its proximity to a normal fault suggests that hydrothermal fluid pathways are tectonically controlled. Geochemical evidence reveals deep fluid circulation to depths only 160 m above the axial magma lens. Relative to on-axis vents at 9° 50'N, these off-axis fluids attain higher temperatures and pressures. This tectonically controlled vent field may therefore exhibit greater stability in fluid composition, in contrast to more dynamic, dike-controlled, on-axis vents. The location of this site indicates that high-temperature convective circulation cells extend to greater distances off axis than previously realized. Thorough high-resolution mapping is necessary to understand the distribution, frequency, and physical controls on active off-axis vent fields so that their contribution to global heat and chemical fluxes and role in metacommunity dynamics can be determined.

Environmental DNA (eDNA) quantification and sequencing are emerging techniques for assessing biodiversity in marine ecosystems. Environmental DNA can be transported by ocean currents and may remain at detectable concentrations far from its source depending on how long it persist. Thus, predicting the persistence time of eDNA is crucial to defining the spatial context of the information derived from it. To investigate the physicochemical controls of eDNA persistence, we performed degradation experiments at temperature, pH, and oxygen conditions relevant to the open ocean and the deep sea. The eDNA degradation process was best explained by a model with two phases with different decay rate constants. During the initial phase, eDNA degraded rapidly, and the rate was independent of physicochemical factors. During the second phase, eDNA degraded slowly, and the rate was strongly controlled by temperature, weakly controlled by pH, and not controlled by dissolved oxygen concentration. We demonstrate that marine eDNA can persist at quantifiable concentrations for over 2 weeks at low temperatures (≤10 °C) but for a week or less at ≥20 °C. The relationship between temperature and eDNA persistence is independent of the source species. We propose a general temperature-dependent model to predict the maximum persistence time of eDNA detectable through single-species eDNA quantification methods.

We consider the opportunities and challenges associated with organizing a conference online, using a case study of a medium-sized (approx. 400 participants) international conference held virtually in August 2020. In addition, we present quantifiable evidence of the participants' experience using the results from an online post-conference questionnaire. Although the virtual meeting was not able to replicate the in-person experience in some aspects (e.g. less engagement between participants) the overwhelming majority of respondents found the meeting an enjoyable experience and would join similar events again. Notably, there was a strong desire for future in-person meetings to have at least some online component. Online attendance by lower-income researchers was higher compared with a past, similar-themed in-person meeting held in a high-income nation, but comparable to one held in an upper-middle-income nation. This indicates that online conferences are not a panacea for diversity and inclusivity, and that holding in-person meetings in developing economies can be at least as effective. Given that it is now relatively easy to stream contents of meetings online using low-cost methods, there are clear benefits in making all presented content accessible online, as well as organizing online networking events for those unable to attend in person.

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is still spreading fast in several tropical countries after more than one year of pandemic. In this scenario, the effects of weather conditions that can influence the spread of the virus are not clearly understood. This study aimed to analyse the influence of meteorological (temperature, wind speed, humidity and specific enthalpy) and human mobility variables in six cities (Barranquilla, Bogota, Cali, Cartagena, Leticia and Medellin) from different biomes in Colombia on the coronavirus dissemination from March 25, 2020, to January 15, 2021. Rank correlation tests and a neural network named self-organising map (SOM) were used to investigate similarities in the dynamics of the disease in the cities and check possible relationships among the variables. Two periods were analysed (quarantine and post-quarantine) for all cities together and individually. The data were classified in seven groups based on city, date and biome using SOM. The virus transmission was most affected by mobility variables, especially in the post-quarantine. The meteorological variables presented different behaviours on the virus transmission in different biogeographical regions. The wind speed was one of the factors connected with the highest contamination rate recorded in Leticia. The highest new daily cases were recorded in Bogota where cold/dry conditions (average temperature <14 °C and absolute humidity >9 g/m3) favoured the contagions. In contrast, Barranquilla, Cartagena and Leticia presented an opposite trend, especially with the absolute humidity >22 g/m3. The results support the implementation of better local control measures based on the particularities of tropical regions.
