RESUMO

In the recent decade, we have seen major progress in quantifying the behaviors and the impact of scientists, resulting in a quantitative toolset capable of monitoring and predicting the career patterns of the profession. It is unclear, however, if this toolset applies to other creative domains beyond the sciences. In particular, while performance in the arts has long been difficult to quantify objectively, research suggests that professional networks and prestige of affiliations play a similar role to those observed in science, hence they can reveal patterns underlying successful careers. To test this hypothesis, here we focus on ballet, as it allows us to investigate in a quantitative fashion the interplay of individual performance, institutional prestige, and network effects. We analyze data on competition outcomes from 6363 ballet students affiliated with 1603 schools in the United States, who participated in the Youth America Grand Prix (YAGP) between 2000 and 2021. Through multiple logit models and matching experiments, we provide evidence that schools' strategic network position bridging between communities captures social prestige and predicts the placement of students into jobs in ballet companies. This work reveals the importance of institutional prestige on career success in ballet and showcases the potential of network science approaches to provide quantitative viewpoints for the professional development of careers beyond science.

Very little has been written about the national pioneer investigators and the formal institutions and channels of knowledge that have contributed to the consolidation of cognitive neuroscience in Chile. This article is a review based on scientific publications, magazine articles and interviews with neuroscientists that were key to the development of cognitive neuroscience in Chile. In particular, the review incorporates information about the different Chilean investigators, the universities where they completed their doctoral studies, and the institutions where they settled afterwards. The objective of this article is to describe the way in which neuroscientific knowledge extended in Chile and to give recognition to pioneering scientists. The information retrieved was processed through the reconstruction of an interaction network between local and foreign neuroscientists, as well as their universities and institutions of origin, that contributed to the development of cognitive neuroscience in Chile. A visual representation of these networks was elaborated. In addition, the scientists' academic training in Chile and abroad is summarized in a table. This analysis allows for a deeper comprehension of the socio-historical context in which cognitive neuroscience emerges and encourages a critical perspective of its development in Chile.

Vascular Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, also known as Ehlers-Danlos syndrome type IV, is a life-threatening inherited disorder of connective tissue, resulting from mutations in the COL3A1 gene coding for type III procollagen. Vascular EDS causes severe fragility of connective tissues with arterial and gastrointestinal rupture, and complications of surgical and radiological interventions. As for many rare orphan diseases, delay in diagnosis is common, even when the clinical features are typical, leading to inadequate or inappropriate treatment and management. In childhood many individuals with vascular EDS are first thought to have coagulation disorders. In adulthood, four main clinical findings, including a striking facial appearance, easy bruising, translucent skin with visible veins and rupture of vessels, gravid uterus or intestines, contribute to the diagnosis, which can be confirmed by SDS-PAGE studies of type III procollagen molecules synthesis by cultured fibroblasts or by the identification of a mutation in the COL3A1 gene coding for type III procollagen. Vascular EDS is inherited as an autosomal dominant trait. Varied molecular mechanisms have been observed and, of the mutations described to date, most have been unique to each family or "private", with no correlation between genotype and phenotype. Vascular EDS is of particular importance to surgeons, radiologists, obstetricians and geneticists since, although there is currently no specific treatment for the condition, knowledge of the diagnosis may help in the management of visceral complications, pregnancy and genetic counseling.
