RESUMO

A method for the quantitative determination of prednisolone in ointment preparations is described. It uses TLC and UV spectrophotometry in combination. Solutions and ointments are chromatographed using silica gel GF 254 and various solvent systems, the layers containing the active ingredient are eluted and the substance determined at 240 nm.

RESUMO

Propranolol is a well-known powerful betareceptor-blocking agent. Its quaternary dimethyl derivative, designated as pranolium was firstly prepared by Lucchesi. Compared to propranolol it possesses no betareceptor-blocking activity and no local anaesthetic properties but shows the same antiarrhythmic action as the starting material. The synthesis of pranolium and its optical isomers starting from the corresponding propranolol derivatives is described. Their pharmacological activities have been tested. No significant differences regarding the pharmacological action could be observed.

RESUMO

Metronidazole was investigated in the basic dermatologic agent Elacutan W to improve the topical therapy of rosacea. The suitability of that basic dermatologic agent was verified for metronidazole, prednisolone and dexamethasone by stability tests (UV-spectroscopy, pH) and by in-vitro-liberation-measurements (membrane method). The drugs are stable for a period of 100 days.

RESUMO

Blepharopigmentation or permanent eyeliner is a popular cosmetic procedure currently performed by a variety of methods. All methods attempt to implant ferrous oxide pigment into the dermis. We performed histopathologic studies on a series of three eyelid specimens, including two by a previously undescribed multi-needle pigment delivery system. Light microscopy revealed the epidermis to be pigment-free and the dermis to contain pigment in clumps. Transmission electron microscopy (EM) demonstrated that the pigment was largely in macrophages. Energy-dispersive x-ray micro-analysis showed that in addition to iron and talc, titanium particles were also present. These findings suggest that the pigment is tolerated by the eyelid despite the fact that current pigments are contaminated.

RESUMO

Presented is a case of acute bilateral conjunctivitis in a healthy 28-year-old man with signs and symptoms resembling those of catarrhal conjunctivitis but resulting from infestation with larvae of the sheep nasal botfly. The patient was treated with neomycin ointment and neomycin/hydrocortisone ophthalmic solution. While not a common cause of conjunctivitis, larval conjunctivitis requires prompt identification in order to institute specific and unique therapy that will prevent serious morbidity.
