RESUMO

Magnetoencephalography (MEG) measures brain function via assessment of magnetic fields generated by neural currents. Conventional MEG uses superconducting sensors, which place significant limitations on performance, practicality, and deployment; however, the field has been revolutionised in recent years by the introduction of optically-pumped-magnetometers (OPMs). OPMs enable measurement of the MEG signal without cryogenics, and consequently the conception of 'OPM-MEG' systems which ostensibly allow increased sensitivity and resolution, lifespan compliance, free subject movement, and lower cost. However, OPM-MEG remains in its infancy with limitations on both sensor and system design. Here, we report a new OPM-MEG design with miniaturised and integrated electronic control, a high level of portability, and improved sensor dynamic range (arguably the biggest limitation of existing instrumentation). We show that this system produces equivalent measures when compared to an established instrument; specifically, when measuring task-induced beta-band, gamma-band and evoked neuro-electrical responses, source localisations from the two systems were highly comparable and temporal correlation was >0.7 at the individual level and >0.9 for groups. Using an electromagnetic phantom, we demonstrate improved dynamic range by running the system in background fields up to 8 nT. We show that the system is effective in gathering data during free movement (including a sitting-to-standing paradigm) and that it is compatible with simultaneous electroencephalography (EEG - the clinical standard). Finally, we demonstrate portability by moving the system between two laboratories. Overall, our new system is shown to be a significant step forward for OPM-MEG technology and offers an attractive platform for next generation functional medical imaging.

Optically pumped magnetometers (OPMs) offer a new wearable means to measure magnetoencephalography (MEG) signals, with many advantages compared to conventional systems. However, OPMs are an emerging technology, thus characterizing and replicating MEG recordings is essential. Using OPM-MEG and SQUID-MEG, this study investigated evoked responses, oscillatory power, and functional connectivity during emotion processing in 20 adults, to establish replicability across the two technologies. Five participants with dental fixtures were included to assess the validity of OPM-MEG recordings in those with irremovable metal. Replicable task-related evoked responses were observed in both modalities. Similar patterns of oscillatory power to faces were observed in both systems. Increased connectivity was found in SQUID-versus OPM-MEG in an occipital and parietal anchored network. Notably, high quality OPM-MEG data were retained in participants with metallic fixtures, from whom no useable data were collected using conventional MEG.

Within the framework of the interpersonal theory of suicide, parent-child conflict in adolescence may be associated with suicidal ideation through increases in thwarted interpersonal needs (i.e., perceived burdensomeness and thwarted belongingness). Familism, a cultural value that emphasizes prioritizing familial interconnectedness and honor, may moderate the association between parent-child conflict and thwarted interpersonal needs. This study examined the relationship between parent-child conflict, familism, and suicidal ideation through the interpersonal theory of suicide. Participants were N = 250 psychiatrically hospitalized adolescents aged 12-17 years (Mage = 14.84, 60.8% female; 41.9% Hispanic, 21.5% African American/Black, 26.0% Caucasian). Participants completed survey and interview measures prior to discharge from psychiatric hospitalization. There was a significant conditional indirect effect of parent-child conflict on suicidal ideation through thwarted interpersonal needs [F (3, 246) = 54.41, p < .01], such that the strength of the indirect effects family conflict on suicidal ideation via thwarted interpersonal needs increased as familism increased. Findings indicate that the relationship between parent-child conflict and thwarted interpersonal needs may be exacerbated when levels of familism are also high. For youth who endorse high levels of familism, parent-child conflict may be particularly pernicious. Interventions targeting the family environment are needed to potentially improve adolescents' interpersonal functioning and protect against suicidal ideation.


Child and adolescent suicide is a growing and pressing problem, and it is currently the second leading cause of death among people aged 10­34. One theory of suicide, called the interpersonal theory of suicide, proposes that suicide ideation is related to two main risk factors: feeling that one's life is a burden on others (called perceived burdensomeness) and feeling like one is disconnected from others (called thwarted belongingness). In this theory, risk factors like parent-child conflict may be related to suicide ideation through increases in perceived burdensomeness and thwarted belongingness. It is possible that cultural values that prioritize family connectedness and honor (called familism) may also impact these relationships. The current study looked at how parent-child conflict, familism, and adolescent suicide ideation were related to one another in the context of the interpersonal theory of suicide. Participants in the study were 250 adolescents in a psychiatric hospital who completed survey and interview measures before being discharged. Results found parent-child conflict was related to suicide ideation through increases in one's perceived burdensomeness and thwarted belongingness (higher parent-child conflict was related to higher ratings of perceived burdensomeness and thwarted belongingness, which was related to higher ratings of suicide ideation), and the strength of the relationship between parent-child conflict, perceived burdensomeness, and thwarted belongingness increased as ratings of familism increased. These results indicate that parent-child conflict may have an especially strong relationship with thoughts of suicide in adolescents who also report a high level of familism. Therefore, suicide-related interventions that target the family environment may help prevent and treat adolescent suicide ideation.

Neural oscillations mediate the coordination of activity within and between brain networks, supporting cognition and behaviour. How these processes develop throughout childhood is not only an important neuroscientific question but could also shed light on the mechanisms underlying neurological and psychiatric disorders. However, measuring the neurodevelopmental trajectory of oscillations has been hampered by confounds from instrumentation. In this paper, we investigate the suitability of a disruptive new imaging platform - Optically Pumped Magnetometer-based magnetoencephalography (OPM-MEG) - to study oscillations during brain development. We show how a unique 192-channel OPM-MEG device, which is adaptable to head size and robust to participant movement, can be used to collect high-fidelity electrophysiological data in individuals aged between 2 and 34 years. Data were collected during a somatosensory task, and we measured both stimulus-induced modulation of beta oscillations in sensory cortex, and whole-brain connectivity, showing that both modulate significantly with age. Moreover, we show that pan-spectral bursts of electrophysiological activity drive task-induced beta modulation, and that their probability of occurrence and spectral content change with age. Our results offer new insights into the developmental trajectory of beta oscillations and provide clear evidence that OPM-MEG is an ideal platform for studying electrophysiology in neurodevelopment.

OBJECTIVE: Differences in how impulsivity is conceptualized, along with a myopic focus on impulsivity's relationship with historical suicidal behaviors, have resulted in limited implications made from prior research regarding impulsivity and suicidal thoughts and behaviors. The current study investigated the indirect effect facets of impulsivity may have on suicidal ideation, specifically, through thwarted interpersonal needs. METHODS: Participants were N = 424 undergraduate students who completed a cross-sectional survey. Participants completed the Urgency, Premeditation, Perseverance, Sensation Seeking, Impulsive Behavior Scale (UPPS), the Adult Suicide Ideation Questionnaire (ASIQ), and the Interpersonal Needs Questionnaire (INQ). Parallel mediation models were run to examine the relation between facets of impulsivity, perceived burdensomeness, thwarted belongingness, and suicidal ideation. RESULTS: Thwarted belonginess and perceived burdensomeness significantly accounted for the variance in the relation between negative urgency and suicidal ideation. Neither thwarted belongingness nor perceived burdensomeness significantly explained variance in the relation between (lack of) premeditation and suicidal ideation. Conversely, perceived burdensomeness and thwarted belonginess significantly explained the inverse relation between sensation seeking and suicidal ideation (i.e., greater sensation seeking was related to lower perceived burdensomeness and thwarted belongingness and in turn lower suicidal ideation). CONCLUSION: Negative urgency, in particular, is related to suicidal ideation through thwarted interpersonal needs. Future research should continue to differentiate between various types of impulsivity and its relationship with both suicidal ideation and behaviors utilizing both cross-sectional and ambulatory assessments of these constructs.HIGHLIGHTSNegative urgency is related to suicidal ideation.Negative urgency is related to thwarted interpersonal needs.Thwarted interpersonal needs partially explain the relation between negative urgency and suicidal ideation.

Background: Suicide prevention gatekeeper training programs offer a unique opportunity to increase knowledge about suicide prevention, enhance risk identification, and reduce suicide-related stigma. Aims: This study evaluated the efficacy of an online suicide prevention gatekeeper training program in a randomized trial. Method: Participants were US college students (N = 388). Participants (69.3% women) had a mean age of 19.01 years and identified primarily as Hispanic/Latinx (52.1%) and non-Hispanic White (22.4%). Participants completed pre- and posttest surveys and were randomly assigned to either the ASK About Suicide to Save a Life (AS + K?) suicide prevention gatekeeper training program or an information-only comparison intervention. Results: Participants in the AS + K? condition reported significantly greater gatekeeper preparedness and self-efficacy, and lower stigmatized attitudes at posttraining, as compared with those in the comparison condition. There were no significant differences in likelihood of using gatekeeper skills or suicide-related knowledge across groups. Limitations: This short-term study was not able to assess behavioral change resulting in use of gatekeeper skills over time. Conclusions: Completion of gatekeeper training resulted in increases in preparedness and self-efficacy for engaging in gatekeeper behaviors, as well as a reduction in suicide-related stigma. Despite small intervention effects, the online AS + K? training appears to be a promising program.

INTRODUCTION: The development of evidence-based treatments relies on accurate theoretical frameworks sensitive to the lived realities of the populations from which they are derived. Yet, the perspectives of Black youth are vastly underrepresented in extant theories of suicidal behavior. Cultural Consensus Modeling provides an evidence-based approach for developing a culturally informed understanding of suicide risk among Black youth. METHOD: Participants were 50 Black adolescents (Mage = 16.20 years; 76.0% male) who completed Phase 1 of a Cultural Consensus Modeling study. Participants freely listed reasons for suicide and reasons for living among similar peer Black youth. Responses were synthesized and coded for major themes. RESULTS: The most common reasons for suicide were racism (40%), depression (32%), poverty (26%), and bullying (22%). The most common reasons for living were family (58%), having a purpose or goals (36%), friends (30%), and hope for a better future (26%). CONCLUSION: Responses highlighted issues of racism and social justice, depression, and poverty, as well as the protective role of relationships, living for the future, and contributing to Black empowerment. Future research should utilize Cultural Consensus Modeling to elevate the voices of Black youth, improving extant theories of suicide, and identifying unique mechanisms or opportunities for prevention.

INTRODUCTION: Interpersonal hopelessness (IH), as outlined in the Interpersonal Theory of Suicide, is theorized to include two correlated, distinct constructs: hopelessness about one's thwarted belongingness (IH-TB) and about perceived burdensomeness on others (IH-PB). Few studies have explored IH, and none have explored its temporal stability or prospective prediction of suicidal desire. METHODS: Undergraduates (N = 43) selectively recruited for past-2-week suicidal ideation completed five ecological momentary assessment surveys per day for 10-days. Intraclass correlations, root mean square of successive differences, and multilevel models were used to examine the data and test relationships among predictor variables. RESULTS: IH-TB and IH-PB demonstrated greater temporal stability than general hopelessness. IH-TB, IH-PB, and their interaction were significant predictors of suicidal desire concurrently and prospectively. IH-PB was no longer significantly predictive of suicidal desire when adjusting for general hopelessness. Post-hoc models showed that suicidal desire was not predictive of IH-TB, IH-PB, or their interaction suggesting the relationship is not recursive. CONCLUSION: Results showed that interventions aimed at decreasing one's hopelessness specific to TB and PB may be beneficial for decreasing suicidal desire. Future research should seek to replicate these results in larger and more diverse samples and consider the use of shorter ambulatory assessment intervals.

The evolution of human cognitive function is reliant on complex social interactions which form the behavioural foundation of who we are. These social capacities are subject to dramatic change in disease and injury; yet their supporting neural substrates remain poorly understood. Hyperscanning employs functional neuroimaging to simultaneously assess brain activity in two individuals and offers the best means to understand the neural basis of social interaction. However, present technologies are limited, either by poor performance (low spatial/temporal precision) or an unnatural scanning environment (claustrophobic scanners, with interactions via video). Here, we describe hyperscanning using wearable magnetoencephalography (MEG) based on optically pumped magnetometers (OPMs). We demonstrate our approach by simultaneously measuring brain activity in two subjects undertaking two separate tasks-an interactive touching task and a ball game. Despite large and unpredictable subject motion, sensorimotor brain activity was delineated clearly, and the correlation of the envelope of neuronal oscillations between the two subjects was demonstrated. Our results show that unlike existing modalities, OPM-MEG combines high-fidelity data acquisition and a naturalistic setting and thus presents significant potential to investigate neural correlates of social interaction.

The ability to collect high-quality neuroimaging data during ambulatory participant movement would enable a wealth of neuroscientific paradigms. Wearable magnetoencephalography (MEG) based on optically pumped magnetometers (OPMs) has the potential to allow participant movement during a scan. However, the strict zero magnetic field requirement of OPMs means that systems must be operated inside a magnetically shielded room (MSR) and also require active shielding using electromagnetic coils to cancel residual fields and field changes (due to external sources and sensor movements) that would otherwise prevent accurate neuronal source reconstructions. Existing active shielding systems only compensate fields over small, fixed regions and do not allow ambulatory movement. Here we describe the matrix coil, a new type of active shielding system for OPM-MEG which is formed from 48 square unit coils arranged on two planes which can compensate magnetic fields in regions that can be flexibly placed between the planes. Through the integration of optical tracking with OPM data acquisition, field changes induced by participant movement are cancelled with low latency (25 ms). High-quality MEG source data were collected despite the presence of large (65 cm translations and 270° rotations) ambulatory participant movements.

Aim: Gatekeeper interventions are universal programs designed for use by the general public that provide brief training sessions in responding to suicidal risk. To date, the evidence base for the efficacy of gatekeeper intervention training programs has been mixed. However, little attention has been paid to potential psychological moderators of the efficacy of suicide gatekeeper interventions. We explore the potential moderating effects of suicide-related stigma and social responsibility on the efficacy of a suicide prevention gatekeeper training program.Methods: Participants were 179 college students with a mean age of 19.05 years (SD = 1.82, range 18-31). Participants were 71.5% women, 48.6% Hispanic, and 19.6% non-Hispanic White.Results: Results indicated that higher scores on suicide-related stigma were associated with smaller intervention effects on gatekeeper self-efficacy. In contrast, higher scores on social responsibility were associated with greater intervention effects with regard to gatekeeper preparedness and gatekeeper likelihood.Conclusion: An improved understanding of the factors associated with efficacy of gatekeeper intervention programs may lead to the development of improved gatekeeper interventions. These findings may also contribute to the development of targeted gatekeeper interventions for specific cultural or occupational groups.HighlightsGatekeeper self-efficacy was moderated by levels of suicide-related stigma.Gatekeeper preparedness and likelihood were moderated by personal responsibility.Understanding moderators of gatekeeper efficacy may improve gatekeeper interventions.

Optically pumped magnetometers (OPMs) are an emerging lightweight and compact sensor that can measure magnetic fields generated by the human brain. OPMs enable construction of wearable magnetoencephalography (MEG) systems, which offer advantages over conventional instrumentation. However, when trying to measure signals at low frequency, higher levels of inherent sensor noise, magnetic interference and movement artefact introduce a significant challenge. Accurate characterisation of low frequency brain signals is important for neuroscientific, clinical, and paediatric MEG applications and consequently, demonstrating the viability of OPMs in this area is critical. Here, we undertake measurement of theta band (4-8 Hz) neural oscillations and contrast a newly developed 174 channel triaxial wearable OPM-MEG system with conventional (cryogenic-MEG) instrumentation. Our results show that visual steady state responses at 4 Hz, 6 Hz and 8 Hz can be recorded using OPM-MEG with a signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) that is not significantly different to conventional MEG. Moreover, we measure frontal midline theta oscillations during a 2-back working memory task, again demonstrating comparable SNR for both systems. We show that individual differences in both the amplitude and spatial signature of induced frontal-midline theta responses are maintained across systems. Finally, we show that our OPM-MEG results could not have been achieved without a triaxial sensor array, or the use of postprocessing techniques. Our results demonstrate the viability of OPMs for characterising theta oscillations and add weight to the argument that OPMs can replace cryogenic sensors as the fundamental building block of MEG systems.

OBJECTIVE: Ethical concerns frequently arise in suicide prevention research regarding participant safety and confidentiality. Despite a substantial literature on managing and navigating ethical concerns in suicide research, little attention has been paid to the reporting of ethical procedures. Furthermore, standard procedures for reporting ethical risk management procedures have not been developed. METHOD: A review of the current literature was performed to examine the current state of reporting of ethical procedures within suicide research. Articles published in 2020 (N = 263) from three suicide-focused publications were screened and then coded (n = 131) to identify reporting of procedures for the ethical conduct of research and suicide risk management steps taken by the research teams. RESULTS: The majority of articles reported ethical review or approval (84.7%) and reported the use of an informed consent process (77.9%). Only 28.2% included risk mitigation procedures. Of those 29.7% of those articles reported conducting risk evaluation, 66.7% reported resource dissemination, and 51.4% reported an intervention. CONCLUSION: As empirical support for brief interventions accrues, suicide prevention researchers should consider establishing standards for the reporting of procedures to ensure the safety of participants with suicidal risk.HighlightsReporting suicide safety protocols helps ensure high ethical standards in research.Fewer than 1/3 of articles reviewed reported risk mitigation procedures in 2020.Standard procedures for reporting safety protocols in suicide research are needed.

OBJECTIVE: Trauma-exposed youth often experience impairing externalizing problems (EXTs), yet the relationship between EXTs, trauma exposure, and posttraumatic stress symptoms (PTSS) are not well understood. To examine the extent of their co-occurrence, we report the rates and correlates of youth EXTs relative to clinically elevated PTSS in a sample of youth referred to a trauma and grief specialty clinic. METHOD: Self- and caregiver-report measures were obtained from 260 youth ages 7-19 years (M = 11.92, SD = 3.21; 53.5% female) during a pretreatment assessment. The sample was divided into 4 groups according to the youths' PTSS and EXT score elevations, and these groups were then compared according to rates of youth depressive symptoms, youth suicidal ideation, and caregiver strain. RESULTS: The 4 groups were comorbid PTSS and EXTs (18%); EXTs-only group (36%); PTSS-only group (13%), and subclinical symptom group (34%). The comorbid PTSS and EXTs group had the highest scores on all other child and caregiver symptom measures. Compared to the subclinical group, youth in the PTSS-only group had increased depressive symptoms and suicidal ideation, whereas youth in the EXTs-only group had elevated levels of caregiver strain. CONCLUSION: Co-occurring PTSS and EXTs is a common presentation among trauma-exposed youth referred to treatment. These youth are also likely to suffer from other problems of clinical concern, including suicidal ideation, and their problems are associated with caregiver distress. More research is needed to examine unique risk and resiliency factors related to the development of youth EXTs in response to trauma exposure. Background: Lesbian, gay, and bisexual youth face a disproportionate risk of suicidal ideation and attempt compared to heterosexual counterparts. Escalation from ideation to attempt can occur quickly, and youth who survive suicide attempts are likely to pursue subsequent, riskier attempts. This study examines the effects of bullying and sexual orientation on suicidal outcomes. Methods: Data came from the national, school-administered 2017 Youth Risk Behavior Survey (N = 14,765). Bivariate associations, binomial logistic regressions, and ordinal logistic regressions were performed. Results: Lesbian/gay, bisexual, and unsure youth reported greater odds of ideation and attempts compared to heterosexual youth. For ideation, increased effects were inconsistent across bullying types and significant interactions were found for bisexual youth who were bullied in school, and for lesbian/gay youth who were cyberbullied. Conclusion: These results underscore the need to understand bullying victimization for lesbian, gay, and bisexual youth. Awareness of increasing cyberbullying and creating school environments of no-bullying tolerance in the post-pandemic era are among the challenges ahead.

Magnetically shielded rooms (MSRs) use multiple layers of materials such as MuMetal to screen external magnetic fields that would otherwise interfere with high precision magnetic field measurements such as magnetoencephalography (MEG). Optically pumped magnetometers (OPMs) have enabled the development of wearable MEG systems which have the potential to provide a motion tolerant functional brain imaging system with high spatiotemporal resolution. Despite significant promise, OPMs impose stringent magnetic shielding requirements, operating around a zero magnetic field resonance within a dynamic range of ± 5 nT. MSRs developed for OPM-MEG must therefore effectively shield external sources and provide a low remnant magnetic field inside the enclosure. Existing MSRs optimised for OPM-MEG are expensive, heavy, and difficult to site. Electromagnetic coils are used to further cancel the remnant field inside the MSR enabling participant movements during OPM-MEG, but present coil systems are challenging to engineer and occupy space in the MSR limiting participant movements and negatively impacting patient experience. Here we present a lightweight MSR design (30% reduction in weight and 40-60% reduction in external dimensions compared to a standard OPM-optimised MSR) which takes significant steps towards addressing these barriers. We also designed a 'window coil' active shielding system, featuring a series of simple rectangular coils placed directly onto the walls of the MSR. By mapping the remnant magnetic field inside the MSR, and the magnetic field produced by the coils, we can identify optimal coil currents and cancel the remnant magnetic field over the central cubic metre to just |B|= 670 ± 160 pT. These advances reduce the cost, installation time and siting restrictions of MSRs which will be essential for the widespread deployment of OPM-MEG.

OBJECTIVE: This study describes the prevalence of suicidal ideation (SI) during acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) therapy and investigates the influence of clinical factors and physical symptoms on SI. METHODS: The Children's Depressive Inventory (CDI-2) was administered to ALL patients (diagnosed 2012-2017) at start of consolidation, delayed intensification (DI), maintenance cycle 1 (MC1), and maintenance cycle 2 (MC2) in a multi-site study. SI was present if patients endorsed the item "I want to kill myself." Logistic regression models evaluated associations between SI and sociodemographic factors; depressive symptoms; and below average, average, and above average symptom clusters identified using latent class analysis of pain, nausea, fatigue, and sleep. RESULTS: Participants (n = 175) were 51% male, 75% high-/very high-risk disease, with a median age of 11.2 years at diagnosis (range: 7-18 years). Overall, 14.9% of patients (75% under age 12 years) endorsed SI during treatment, including 4% at start of consolidation, 9% at DI, 8% at MC1, and 4% at MC2. Non-Hispanic Other patients were 10.9-times (95% CI: 2.30-53.40) more likely than non-Hispanic Whites to endorse SI (p = 0.003). The frequency of SI was higher in patients experiencing above average (53.3%) compared to below average (4.1%, p = 0.003) symptoms. Depressive symptoms were consistently associated with SI. CONCLUSIONS: SI during the initial year of childhood ALL was more prevalent in children under the age of 12 years, from ethnic groups not typically associated with increased risk, and who endorsed increased physical and depressive symptoms. Findings highlight the need for improved screening of mental health problems to mitigate symptoms of distress.

RESUMO

Magnetoencephalography (MEG) measures human brain function via assessment of the magnetic fields generated by electrical activity in neurons. Despite providing high-quality spatiotemporal maps of electrophysiological activity, current MEG instrumentation is limited by cumbersome field sensing technologies, resulting in major barriers to utility. Here, we review a new generation of MEG technology that is beginning to lift many of these barriers. By exploiting quantum sensors, known as optically pumped magnetometers (OPMs), 'OPM-MEG' has the potential to dramatically outperform the current state of the art, promising enhanced data quality (better sensitivity and spatial resolution), adaptability to any head size/shape (from babies to adults), motion robustness (participants can move freely during scanning), and a less complex imaging platform (without reliance on cryogenics). We discuss the current state of this emerging technique and describe its far-reaching implications for neuroscience.

INTRODUCTION: Existing CBT protocols for internalizing disorders target thoughts and behaviors related to anxiety and/or depression, but do not explicitly target other identified risk factors for suicide ideation, including perceived burdensomeness toward others. The aims of the current study were to (1) develop a novel, brief module (the "Give program") targeting perceived burdensomeness toward others that can be embedded within existing CBT protocols for youth internalizing disorders, (2) evaluate the acceptability and feasibility of the module with an eye toward intervention refinement, and (3) examine reductions in perceived burdensomeness. METHODS: Participants were 18 clinic-referred youths with anxiety or depressive disorders who endorsed burdensomeness. We used a quasi-experimental interrupted time-series design to evaluate changes in burdensomeness scores following the administration of the module. RESULTS: The module was clinically feasible and well-accepted. Youth burdensomeness scores increased in the first half of the CBT protocol and decreased immediately following the administration of the Give program module. Burdensomeness scores were significantly associated with suicide ideation. CONCLUSION: The current study is the first to develop and evaluate a module targeting burdensomeness in at-risk youth in an outpatient setting, demonstrating that burdensomeness can be efficiently and effectively targeted within existing evidence-based treatment protocols for internalizing disorders in youth.

OBJECTIVE: The Interpersonal Theory of Suicide (ITS) implicates thwarted belongingness and perceived burdensomeness as casually related to suicide desire. The self-report Interpersonal Needs Questionnaire (INQ) is the most commonly used measure to assess belongingness and burdensomeness, including in youth. No parent-report version of the INQ exists. The current study adapted the ten-item version of the INQ (INQ-10) for parent report of youth belongingness and burdensomeness, thereby moving ITS research in youth to a multi-informant measurement approach, and examined its factor structure and convergent and concurrent validity. METHODS: Participants were 168 clinic-referred youths ages 9-17 years (58.9% female; Mage  = 11.91) and their parents. RESULTS: Findings supported a two-factor structure of the parent INQ. In support of convergent and concurrent validity, parent-reported belongingness and burdensomeness were significantly associated with youth-reported belongingness and burdensomeness, suicide ideation, anxiety symptoms, depressive symptoms, and impairment. CONCLUSIONS: The current study provides initial support the INQ-parent version as a valid measure to complement youth self-reports of belongingness and burdensomeness.
