RESUMO

Mental disorders, especially depression, have become a rising problem in modern society. The development of methods and markers for the early detection of mental disorders is an actual problem. Psychological questionnaires are the only tools for evaluating the symptoms of mental disorders in clinical practice today. The electroencephalography (EEG) based non-invasive and cost-effective method seems feasible for the early detection of depression in occupational and family medicine centers and personal monitoring. The reliability of the EEG markers in the early detection of depression assumes their high temporal stability and correlation with the scores of depression questionnaires. The study was been performed on 17 healthy people over three years. Two hypotheses have been evaluated in the current study: first, the temporal stability of EEG markers is close to the stability of the scores of depression questionnaires, and second, EEG markers and depression questionnaires' scores are not correlated in healthy people. The results of the performed study support both hypotheses: the temporal stability of EEG markers is high and close to the stability of depression questionnaires scores and the correlation between the EEG markers and depression questionnaires scores is not detected in healthy people. The results of the current study contribute to the interpretation of results in depression EEG studies and to the feasibility of EEG markers in the detection of depression.

RESUMO

Mental disorders have an increasing tendency and represent the main burden of disease to society today. A wide variety of electroencephalographic (EEG) markers have been successfully used to assess different symptoms of mental disorders. Different EEG markers have demonstrated similar classification accuracy, raising a question of their independence. The current study is aimed to investigate the hypotheses that different EEG markers reveal partly the same EEG features reflecting brain functioning and therefore provide overlapping information. The assessment of the correlations between EEG signal frequency band power, dynamics, and functional connectivity markers demonstrates that a statistically significant correlation is evident in 37 of 66 (56%) comparisons performed between 12 markers of different natures. A significant correlation between the majority of the markers supports the similarity of information in the markers. The results of the performed study confirm the hypotheses that different EEG markers reflect partly the same features in brain functioning. Higuchi's fractal dimension has demonstrated a significant correlation with the 82% of other markers and is suggested to reveal a wide spectrum of various brain disorders. This marker is preferable in the early detection of symptoms of mental disorders.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: The current paper is aimed to discuss the principles and criteria for health protection to radiofrequency electromagnetic field (RF EMF) considering both thermal and non-thermal mechanisms to evaluate the reasonable level for the limits relevant to control the level of RF EMF for the general public in the living environment. The study combines the conclusions of analyses published in recent reviews on RF EMF effects and the data from RF EMF measurements in different countries to select the possible criteria and to derive proposals for the health protection limits on the level of RF EMF following the ALARA principle - as low as reasonably achievable. CONCLUSIONS: Consideration of not only energetic but also coherent qualities of RF EMF leads to two different models for determining the impact of non-ionizing radiation on human health. The thermal model, based on absorption of electromagnetic energy, has a threshold limiting the heating of tissues. The non-thermal model, based on the ability of coherent electric fields to introduce biological effects at constant temperature, has no threshold. Therefore, the impact of RF EMF on human health cannot be excluded but can be minimized by limiting the level of the radiation. The limits can be selected based on indirect criteria. The minimal level of RF EMF that has caused a biological effect is about 2 V/m. The level of long-term broadcast radiation is 6 V/m and the people can be assumed to be adapted to that level without observable health problems. The level of RF EMF measured during last years does not exceed 5 V/m and the level is decreasing with newer generations of telecommunication technology. Limiting the level of RF EMF to the peak value of 6 V/m hopefully reduces the health risk to a minimal level people are adapted to and does not restrict the further development of telecommunication technology.

RESUMO

The current study is aimed to evaluate the effect of COVID-19 vaccine on human EEG and the persistence of the effect. Within a one-year-long resting EEG study period, the healthy male subject was administered two Comirnaty doses three weeks apart to prevent COVID-19. Fourteen recordings were acquired from the subject in one year: twelve reference and two post-vaccination recordings after administrating the second dose of Comirnaty. The changes in absolute powers of EEG frequency bands, EEG spectral asymmetry index (SASI), and Higuchi's fractal dimension (HFD) were analyzed. The results indicated a statistically significant increase in absolute gamma power, SASI and HFD values on the fifth day after the vaccination, while the EEG had restored its normal character on the twelfth day after vaccination. These measures seem to have higher sensitivity for the detection of the effects of the vaccine Clinical Relevance- This is the first study evaluating COVID-19 vaccine effect on healthy human EEG. The study indicated that the vaccine disturbs EEG but the impact is not long-lasting.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: The deployment of new 5G NR technology has significantly raised public concerns in possible negative effects on human health by radiofrequency electromagnetic fields (RF EMF). The current review is aimed to clarify the differences between possible health effects caused by the various generations of telecommunication technology, especially discussing and projecting possible health effects by 5G. The review of experimental studies on the human brain over the last fifteen years and the discussion on physical mechanisms and factors determining the dependence of the RF EMF effects on frequency and signal structure have been performed to discover and explain the possible distinctions between health effects by different telecommunication generations. CONCLUSIONS: The human experimental studies on RF EMF effects on the human brain by 2G, 3G and 4G at frequencies from 450 to 2500 MHz were available for analyses. The search for publications indicated no human experimental studies by 5G nor at the RF EMF frequencies higher than 2500 MHz. The results of the current review demonstrate no consistent relationship between the character of RF EMF effects and parameters of exposure by different generations (2G, 3G, and 4G) of telecommunication technology. At the RF EMF frequencies lower than 10 GHz, the impact of 5G NR FR1 should have no principal differences compared to the previous generations. The radio frequencies used in 5G are even higher and the penetration depths of the fields are smaller; therefore, the effect is rather lower than at previous generations. At the RF EMF frequencies higher than 10 GHz, the mechanism of the effects might differ and the impact of 5G NR FR2 becomes unpredictable. Existing knowledge about the mechanism of RF EMF effects at millimeter waves lacks sufficient experimental data and theoretical models for reliable conclusions. The insufficient knowledge about the possible health effects at millimeter waves and the lack of in vivo experimental studies on 5G NR underline an urgent need for the theoretical and experimental investigations of health effects by 5G NR, especially by 5G NR FR2.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: This review aims to estimate the threshold of radiofrequency electromagnetic field (RF EMF) effects on human brain based on analyses of published research results. To clarify the threshold of the RF EMF effects, two approaches have been applied: (1) the analyses of restrictions in sensitivity for different steps of the physical model of low-level RF EMF mechanism and (2) the analyses of experimental data to clarify the dependence of the RF EMF effect on exposure level based on the results of published original neurophysiological and behavioral human studies for 15 years 2007-2021. CONCLUSIONS: The analyses of the physical model of nonthermal mechanisms of RF EMF effect leads to conclusion that no principal threshold of the effect can be determined. According to the review of experimental data, the rate of detected RF EMF effects is 76.7% in resting EEG studies, 41.7% in sleep EEG and 38.5% in behavioral studies. The changes in EEG probably appear earlier than alterations in behavior become evident. The lowest level of RF EMF at which the effect in EEG was detected is 2.45 V/m (SAR = 0.003 W/kg). There is a preliminary indication that the dependence of the effect on the level of exposure follows rather field strength than SAR alterations. However, no sufficient data are available for clarifying linearity-nonlinearity of the dependence of effect on the level of RF EMF. The finding that only part of people are sensitive to RF EMF exposure can be related to immunity to radiation or hypersensitivity. The changes in EEG caused by RF EMF appeared similar in the majority of analyzed studies and similar to these in depression. The possible causal relationship between RF EMF effect and depression among young people is highly important problem.

RESUMO

This preliminary study is aimed to evaluate the stability of various linear and nonlinear EEG measures over three years on healthy adults. The linear measures, relative powers of EEG frequency bands, interhemispheric (IHAS) and spectral (SASI) asymmetries plus nonlinear Higuchi's fractal dimension (HFD) and detrended fluctuation analyses (DFA), have been calculated from the resting state eyes closed EEG of 17 participants during two sessions separated over three years. Our results indicate that the stability is highest for the nonlinear (HFD and DFA) and the linear (relative powers of EEG frequency bands) EEG measures that use the signal from a single EEG channel and frequency band, followed by the SASI employing signals from a single channel and two frequency bands and lowest for the IHAS employing signals from two channels. The result support the prospect of using EEG-based measures in clinical practice.

RESUMO

The aim of this study was to evaluate individual level of natural variability of electroencephalogram (EEG) based markers. Three linear: alpha power variability, spectral asymmetry index, relative gamma power and three nonlinear methods: Higuchi's fractal dimension, detrended fluctuation analysis, and Lempel-Ziv complexity were selected. The markers were evaluated over 15 sessions acquired in 14 months. The results indicate that individual natural variability for five of the selected markers is lower compared to differences between healthy and depressed groups of subjects in our previous studies. The results of the current study suggest that EEG based markers can be applied for evaluation of disturbances in brain activity at individual level.Clinical Relevance-The indicated stability in the current study of widely used EEG-based markers at individual level suggests a promising opportunity to apply EEG as a novel method in diagnoses of brain mental disorders in clinical practice.

RESUMO

The aim of the study was to analyze the relationship between resting state electroencephalographic (EEG) alpha functional connectivity (FC) and small-world organization. For that purpose, Pearson correlation was calculated between FC and small-worldness (SW). Three undirected FC measures were used: magnitude-squared coherence (MSC), imaginary part of coherency (ICOH), and synchronization likelihood (SL). As a result, statistically significant negative correlation occurred between FC and SW for all three FC measures. Small-worldness of MSC and SL were mostly above 1, but lower than 1 for ICOH, suggesting that functional EEG networks did not have small-world properties. Based on the results of the current study, we suggest that decreased alpha small-world organization is compensated with increased connectivity of alpha oscillations in a healthy brain.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to assess early symptoms of depression in regular occupational health examination using the objective measures based on electroencephalographic (EEG) signal analysis. METHODS: The study was performed on 125 volunteer participants. The resting-state EEG signal was recorded for 7 minutes. The spectral asymmetry index (SASI) and Higuchi fractal dimension (HFD) were calculated in EEG channel Pz. Parallel, the participants were subjected to two psychological tests, observer-rated HAM-D and self-rated EST-Q-D. RESULTS: The SASI revealed depressive symptoms for 64.8%, HFD for 55.2%, HAM-D for 44.8%, and EST-Q-D for 28.8% of participants. Combination of two different measures indicated depression symptoms up to 78.4% of participants. CONCLUSION: The results of this study confirm the feasibility of indication of early symptoms of depression applying EEG-based objective measures.

RESUMO

The aim of the study is to clarify the impact of the strong cyclic signal component on the results of surrogate data method in the case of resting electroencephalographic (EEG) signals. In addition, the impact of segment length is analyzed. Different non-linear measures (fractality, complexity, etc.) of neural signals have been demonstrated to be useful to infer the non-linearity of brain functioning from EEG. The surrogate data method is often applied to test whether or not the non-linear structure can be captured from the data. In addition, a growing number of studies are using surrogate data method to determine the statistical threshold of connectivity values in network analysis. Current study focuses on the conventional segmentation of EEG signals, which could lead to false results of surrogate data method. More specifically, the necessity to use end-matched segments that contain an integer number of dominant frequency periods is studied. EEG recordings from 80 healthy volunteers during eyes-closed resting state were analyzed using multivariate surrogate data method. The artificial surrogate data were generated by shuffling the phase spectra of original signals. The null hypothesis that time series were generated by a linear process was rejected by statistically comparing the non-linear statistics calculated for original and surrogate data sets. Five discriminating statistics were used as non-linear estimators: Higuchi fractal dimension (HFD), Katz fractal dimension (KFD), Lempel-Ziv complexity (LZC), sample entropy (SampEn) and synchronization likelihood (SL). The results indicate that the number of segments evaluated as non-linear differs in the case of various non-linear measures and changes with the segment length. The main conclusion is that the dependence on the deviation of the segment length from full periods of dominant EEG frequency has non-monotonic character and causes misleading results in the evaluation of non-linearity. Therefore, in the case of the signals with non-monotonic spectrum and strong dominant frequency, the correct use of surrogate data method requires the signal length comprising of full periods of the spectrum dominant frequency. The study is important to understand the influence of incorrect selection of EEG signal segment length for surrogate data method to estimate non-linearity.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: This topic review aims to explain the mechanism of low-level microwave (MW) radiation effect based on published research results. The review presents the analysis of theoretical and experimental results comprising underlying physics and derived biological-physiological consequences supported by experimental data. CONCLUSIONS: The rotation of dipolar molecules causes polarization of dielectric medium and restructuring of hydrogen bonds between these molecules. The weakened hydrogen bonds decrease viscosity and enhance diffusion at constant temperature. All steps of proposed model have no critical frequency restrictions at MW frequencies and have been confirmed by electromagnetic field (EMF) theory and/or published experimental results. The synchronous cumulative impact of coherent MW electric field makes possible the field-induced effect despite the field strengths are much weaker than intermolecular fields. The rotation of dipolar molecules results in restructuring hydrogen bonds between the molecules despite the energy of MW radiation is much less than the energy of bonding. The cumulative impact of coherent MW field in a medium has been convincingly confirmed by the measurable dielectric permittivity of the medium. The described mechanism of MW field-induced effect confirms that the nature of the effect differs from the thermal effect and that the exposure by MW radiation can create the specific consequences in biology and materials not characteristic for conventional heating.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: This feasibility study is aimed to clarify the possibility of detection of microwave radiation (MWR)-induced event related potential (ERP) in electroencephalographic (EEG) signal. METHODS: To trigger onset and offset effects in EEG, repetitive MWR stimuli were used. Four 30-channel EEG recordings on a single subject were performed, each about one month apart. The subject was exposed to 450 MHz MWR modulated at 40 Hz at the 1 g peak spatial average specific absorption rate of 0.3 W/kg. During a recording, 40 cycles of 30 s on-off MWR exposure were used. The artifact-free responses to 126 MWR-ON stimuli and 134 MWR-OFF stimuli were averaged over stimuli and channels. RESULTS: Regarding EEG signals locked to MWR-OFF stimulus, the enhanced signal level at alpha frequency band and about twice higher signal to noise ratio at 200 to 440 ms after the stimulus have been detected. No remarkable response in EEG signals locked to MWR-ON stimulus. CONCLUSIONS: The detection of offset effect confirms that there should be an imprint generated by MWR in brain. The results of this preliminary study provide evidence for the detection of MWR-induced ERP in EEG signal and encourage further research in this direction.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Depressive disorder is one of the leading causes of burden of disease today and it is presumed to take the first place in the world in 2030. Early detection of depression requires a patient-friendly inexpensive method based on easily measurable objective indicators. This study aims to compare various single-channel electroencephalographic (EEG) measures in application for detection of depression. METHODS: The EEG recordings were performed on a group of 13 medication-free depressive outpatients and 13 gender and age matched controls. The recorded 30-channel EEG signal was analysed using linear methods spectral asymmetry index, alpha power variability and relative gamma power and nonlinear methods Higuchi's fractal dimension, detrended fluctuation analysis and Lempel-Ziv complexity. Classification accuracy between depressive and control subjects was calculated using logistic regression analysis with leave-one-out cross-validation. Calculations were performed separately for each EEG channel. RESULTS: All calculated measures indicated increase with depression. Maximal testing accuracy using a single measure was 81% for linear and 77% for nonlinear measures. Combination of two linear measures provides the accuracy of 88% and two nonlinear measures of 85%. Maximal classification accuracy of 92% was indicated using mixed combination of three linear and three nonlinear measures. CONCLUSIONS: The results of this preliminary study confirm that single-channel EEG analysis, employing the combination of measures, can provide discrimination of depression at the level of multichannel EEG analysis. The performed study shows that there is no single superior measure for detection of depression.

RESUMO

The aim of this study is to explain the mechanism of the effect of low-level modulated microwave radiation on brain bioelectrical oscillations. The proposed model of excitation by low-level microwave radiation bases on the influence of water polarization on hydrogen bonding forces between water molecules, caused by this the enhancement of diffusion and consequences on neurotransmitters transit time and neuron resting potential. Modulated microwave radiation causes periodic alteration of the neurophysiologic parameters and parametric excitation of brain bioelectric oscillations. The experiments to detect logical outcome of the mechanism on physiological level were carried out on 15 human volunteers. The 450-MHz microwave radiation modulated at 7, 40 and 1000 Hz frequencies was applied at the field power density of 0.16 mW/cm2. A relative change in the EEG power with and without radiation during 10 cycles was used as a quantitative measure. Experimental data demonstrated that modulated at 40 Hz microwave radiation enhanced EEG power in EEG alpha and beta frequency bands. No significant alterations were detected at 7 and 1000 Hz modulation frequencies. These results are in good agreement with the theory of parametric excitation of the brain bioelectric oscillations caused by the periodic alteration of neurophysiologic parameters and support the proposed mechanism. The proposed theoretical framework has been shown to predict the results of experimental study. The suggested mechanism, free of the restrictions related to field strength or time constant, is the first one providing explanation of low-level microwave radiation effects.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Covering a handful of decades but spanning across two centuries, mobile phones announced the dawn of the technological revolution, standing at the forefront as its' most prominent symbol. Over the course of their sovereign dominance, human generations born with the birth of the mobile phone reached the age of maturity, while scientific community started reaching for experience-based perceptivity. AIM: The following review serves as a short-cut across a half-decade old research gap, and a clear-cut analysis on the cutting-edge knowledge of the EMF induced EEG changes. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The selection covers 28 articles about mobile phone effects on resting wakeful EEG in humans conducted over the last two decades, across three continents and 12 countries, of which 75% had positive findings. CONCLUSIONS: At present, the general protocol of a typical study includes investigations on adults (20-60 yrs) grouped in smaller samples and exposed to shorter intervals of GSM-like pulse-modulated signal (10-30 subjects/minutes). The assessment usually involves linear methods for quantitative analysis, while the results mostly revolve around posterior increase in alpha and beta frequency range. The qualitative variations, however, remain open to interpretation. Future research may benefit from multiplication of sub-specific studies leading to replication of more consistent results. The long-term and large-size epidemiologic studies, stratified by age and gender, may also improve the expected outcomes. Regarding the interpretation, non-linear methods could be employed for assessment of individual variations. The emphasis should be placed on theories/measures for better understanding of the subtle interplay between the spectral individualities and mobile phone radiation specifics.

RESUMO

In this study, we assume that microwave radiation affects hydrogen bonding between dipolar water molecules and through that diffusion in water at constant temperature. The experimental study was performed on the setup of two identical reservoirs filled with pure water and 0.9% NaCl solution and connected by a thin tube. Alterations of NaCl concentration in the reservoir initially filled with pure water were measured using the resistance of the solution as an indicator. The applied 450 MHz continuous-wave microwave field had the maximal specific absorption rate of 0.4 W/kg on the connecting tube. The standard deviation of water temperature in the setup was 0.02 °C during an experiment. Our experimental data demonstrated that microwave exposure makes faster the process of diffusion in water. The time required for reduction of initial resistance of the solution by 10% was 1.7 times shorter with microwave. This result is consistent with the proposed mechanism of low-level microwave effect: microwave radiation, rotating dipolar water molecules, causes high-frequency alterations of hydrogen bonds between water molecules, thereby affects its viscosity and makes faster diffusion.

RESUMO

This study was aimed to compare two electroencephalogram (EEG) analysis methods, spectral asymmetry index (SASI) and Higuchi's fractal dimension (HFD), for detection of depression. Linear SASI method is based on evaluation of the balance of powers in two EEG frequency bands in one channel selected higher and lower than the alpha band spectrum maximum. Nonlinear HFD method calculates fractal dimension directly in the time domain. The resting EEG signals of 17 depressive patients and 17 control subjects were used as a database for calculations. SASI values were positive for depressive and negative for control group (P < 0.05). SASI provided the true detection rate of 88% in the depressive and 82% in the control group. The calculated HFD values detected a small (3%) increase with depression (P < 0.05). HFD provided the true detection rate of 94% in the depressive group and 76% in the control group. The rate of correct indication in the both groups was 85% using SASI or HFD. Statistically significant variations were not revealed between hemispheres (P > 0.05). The results indicated that the linear EEG analysis method SASI and the nonlinear HFD method both demonstrated a good sensitivity for detection of characteristic features of depression in a single-channel EEG.
