BACKGROUND: The Kerlan-Jobe Orthopedic Clinic (KJOC) questionnaire is a self-reported performance and functional assessment tool with good reliability and validity for overhead athletes with shoulder and elbow injuries. This study aimed to develop a Japanese version of the KJOC (J-KJOC) to clarify its reproducibility and validity for use by Japanese university baseball players. METHODS: The J-KJOC was translated according to the guidelines for cross-cultural adaptation. A total of 88 university baseball players completed the J-KJOC and the Quick-Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder, and Hand (Q-DASH) questionnaires. Thirty players completed the J-KJOC two times after a median interval of two weeks. We assessed the absolute reliability, construct validity, internal consistency, and test-retest reliability. RESULTS: Cronbach's alpha coefficients ranged from 0.88 and the intraclass correlation coefficient for the total score was 0.91. A fixed bias was absent in the J-KJOC scores (mean difference: -2.2, 95% CI: -4.8 to 0.5). Furthermore, the J-KJOC score was correlated with the Q-DASH-disability/symptom (r = -0.60, p<0.01) and Q-DASH-sports/music (r = -0.63, p<0.01) scores but not correlated with the Q-DASH-work score (r = -0.11, p = 0.316). CONCLUSIONS: The J-KJOC questionnaire demonstrated good reproducibility and validity for assessing upper arm performance in Japanese university baseball players. The results of this study support the use of the J-KJOC for Japanese-speaking baseball players. Further research using this instrument on other types of overhead athletes is needed to determine its wider utility in sports medicine applications.

First-time lateral ankle sprains often lead to chronic ankle instability (CAI), with 47% facing recurrent injuries, emphasizing the need for preventive measures. Side-cutting movements in sports pose a risk for CAI individuals due to potential biomechanical control alterations. While the hop-stabilization warm-up program has proven effective in preventing ankle sprains, its specific acute impact on CAI individuals lacks substantial evidence. This study employed a crossover design with eight CAI participants (23 ± 3.4 years, BMI 23 ± 1.5 kg/m2) and eight healthy participants (25 ± 3.6 years, BMI 23 ± 1.7 kg/m2) to investigate the acute effects of the hop-stabilization warm-up program on dynamic balance, ground reaction force (GRF), and muscle activity during 45- and 90-degree side-cutting movements. Each participant underwent hop-stabilization and control warm-up programs on two experimental days. Assessments, including the Y-balance test, GRF, and muscle activity pre- and post-warm-up, revealed significant improvements in dynamic balance, GRF, and muscle activity during 45-degree side-cutting movements in CAI participants. These findings suggest the potential benefits of incorporating the hop-stabilization warm-up program into the warm-up protocol for individuals with CAI.

Background: The benefit of performing the Nordic Hamstring Exercise (NHE) on an inclined board has been described, however, isometric hamstring activation in different knee and hip angles has not yet been thoroughly explored. Purpose: This study investigated the effect of variations in knee and hip angles during the isometric performance of the NHE on electromyographic activity of the hamstring muscles. Study design: Crossover study. Methods: Thirteen male volunteers performed isometric contractions during the NHE with the knee (30°, 50°, 60°) and the hip (0°, 30°, and 45°) in various angles of flexion on a leg support platform which was inclined at 30°. An electrical goniometer was used to monitor the knee and hip joint angles during 5-s isometric contractions. A multivariate analysis of variance with repeated measures was used to compare normalized electromyographic values of each muscle across different knee and hip angles, followed by pairwise comparisons. Results: The electromyographic activity of the biceps femoris, semitendinosus, and semimembranosus at a knee angle of 30° and hip angle of 0° were significantly higher than those observed with a knee angle of 50° and hip angle of 0°, or a knee angle of 60° and hip angle of 0° (p<0.05). The electromyographic activity of the semimembranosus at a knee angle of 60° and hip angle of 45° was significantly higher than values obtained with knee and hip angles of 60° and 0°, respectively (p<0.05). Conclusions: The results indicate that using a knee flexion of 30° and a hip flexion of 0°, while isometrically performing the NHE on a platform inclined at 30°, may optimize electromyographic activity of the hamstrings. OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to examine longitudinal growth changes in physical characteristics, muscle-tendon structure properties, and skeletal age in preadolescent boys and to compare the relationship between the changes in physical characteristics and muscle-tendon properties and the changes in chronological and skeletal ages. METHODS: Fourteen prepubescent boys (10.9 ± 1.1 years old at the onset of the study) participated in this study over two years (yearly). Maximal muscle strength and maximal strain of tendon structure during ramp isometric contraction and muscle and tendon thickness for knee extensors and plantar flexors were measured. In addition, skeletal age was assessed using Tanner-Whitehouse three method. RESULTS: Changes in height, thigh length, and lower leg length were highly correlated with changes in skeletal age but not chronological age. However, changes in the morphological and mechanical properties of muscle and tendon structure were not significantly associated with changes in chronological and skeletal ages. CONCLUSION: The present preliminary results suggest that longitudinal growth changes in the long-axis of the body are highly correlated with skeletal age change, whereas those in the muscle-tendon structure properties were not.

Force-velocity profiling during the braking phase of countermovement jump: Relationship to eccentric strength and validity of the 2-point method. J Strength Cond Res 37(11): 2141-2148, 2023-The aims of this study were threefold: to investigate the force-velocity profile during the braking phase (bFVP) of the countermovement jump (CMJ) and its relationship with other performance indicators, and whether it could be measured using the two-point method. Sixteen trained men performed 6 different loaded CMJs (0%, 32 kg, 60, 80, 100, and 120% body mass), and eccentric strength measurements were determined. Scatter plots were created using the mean force and velocity during the braking phase of each loaded CMJ. The corrected Akaike's information criterion (AICc) was calculated by fitting linear, quadratic, and cubic regression equations to the bFVP and compared using the 1-way analysis of variance and Bonferroni's post hoc tests. A correlation analysis was performed between the bFVP and other performance indicators. A bias assessment was performed to validate the 2-point method of the bFVP. The significance level was set at p < 0.05. The AICc in the linear regression equation was significantly lower (p < 0.05) than those in the other regression equations. Significant correlations were found between the slope and theoretical maximum force of the bFVP obtained from the linear regression equation and eccentric 1 repetition maximum. The acceptable condition for bias was met by 0-120%. The bFVP is likely to have a linear relationship and can be associated with eccentric strength. Furthermore, the 2-point method in bFVP has validity.

BACKGROUND: Risk factors for throwing injuries related to pitching mechanics are unknown. Insufficient pelvic rotation during pitching may be a risk factor for shoulder and elbow injury. This cohort study aimed to identify biomechanics risk factors for throwing injuries in young baseball players. We hypothesized that excessive mechanical load and motion errors would be risk factors for throwing injuries. METHODS: Young baseball pitchers (aged 8-9 years) were recruited from regional baseball leagues between December 2016 and December 2019. Pitching measurements were performed before the start of each season and after the end of the last season in December 2019. The trunk tilt angular displacement, pelvic rotation angular displacement, and forearm rotation angle were calculated using a markerless motion capture system. We also measured elbow varus torque using an accelerometer. After the initial test session, each participant was followed up for 3 years to determine the occurrence of throwing injuries. Players with throwing shoulder and elbow injuries were categorized into the throwing injury group, and those without shoulder and elbow pain for 3 years were categorized into the noninjured group. RESULTS: In this study, 97 baseball pitchers completed a 3-year follow-up. Among those participants, 66 (68.0%) had throwing injuries. A significant difference was observed between the throwing injury and noninjured groups, whereby the injured players had less pelvic rotation angular displacement. CONCLUSION: Insufficient pelvic rotation during pitching is a newly discovered risk factor related to throwing injuries.

Background: A recently developed smartphone application (Nordic Angle) allows the automatic calculation of the break-point angle (BPA) during Nordic hamstring exercise (NHE) without transferring the collected data to a computer. The BPA is the point at which the hamstrings are unable to withstand force. However, the validity of the BPA values obtained by this method has not been examined. Hypothesis/Purpose: This study aimed to evaluate the validity and reliability of the Nordic Angle by comparing the BPA values of the Nordic Angle with those of two-dimensional motion analysis software that can calculate the angles and angular velocities of various joints. Study Design: Cohort assessing Validity and Reliability. Methods: The validity of the Nordic Angle BPA data was verified by Spearman's correlation test for consistency with the movement analysis data, and the magnitude of the correlation was indicated by rs. The agreement between these measurements was examined using the Bland-Altman analysis. The reliability of the Nordic Angle and motion analysis was examined using the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) (1,k) based on data from repeated trials within a day. Results: Although the spearman correlation between the Nordic angle and the angle determined using motion analysis did not reach statistical significance (p = 0.052), a very large correlation was present (rs = 0.75). The difference between the mean values of the Nordic Angle and motion analysis was 0.4 ± 2.1°, and the limits of agreement ranged from -3.9° to 4.6°. In two BPA measurements, the Nordic Angle showed perfect reliability (ICC = 1.00, p < 0.001), while motion analysis showed nearly perfect reliability (ICC = 0.97, p < 0.001). Conclusion: The Nordic Angle, which has both validity and reliability, may be appropriate for field measurement because it allows immediate feedback of BPA and the measurement of many athletes. The purpose of this systematic review was to summarize the associations of eccentric force variables during jumping and eccentric lower-limb strength with vertical jump performance. A literature search was conducted in September 2022 using PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus. Thirteen cross-sectional studies investigating the relationship between eccentric force and strength variables, such as force, rate of force development (RFD), power, time, and velocity, and vertical jump performance, including the jump height, reactive strength index (RSI), and reactive strength index-modified (RSImod), were included in this systematic review. As eccentric strength, variables during the unloading-to-braking phase of countermovement jump (CMJ) (force, RFD, etc.) and the eccentric force of the squat movement and knee joint were included. The CMJ height, RSImod, and drop jump RSI were included to analyze the vertical jump performance. The modified form of the Downs and Black checklist was used to evaluate quality. Associations between the force and RFD during the descending phase of the CMJ and jump height were observed in some studies but not in others, with differences between the studies. Some studies reported associations between the force and/or RFD during the descending phase of the CMJ and RSImod of the CMJ, with no differences among their results. In addition, there are associations of the eccentric forces during squatting and knee extension with the CMJ and the drop jump heights and RSI of the drop jump. The eccentric force variables in the CMJ and RSImod are related; however, their relationship with jump height remains unclear. Furthermore, improved eccentric muscle strength may contribute to vertical jump height because of the associations of the eccentric strength during knee extension and squatting with jump height.

Increasing the braking and amortisation forces during a countermovement jump (CMJ) increases the early-half concentric mean force (EMF) which can enhance muscle contraction velocity in the latter half of the concentric phase. This may negatively affect exertion force, owing to the force-velocity relationship and not increase the jump height. This study aimed to investigate the associations of the braking and amortisation forces during the CMJ with the latter-half concentric mean force (LMF). Twenty-seven men (age: 20 ± 1 years, body mass: 76.2 ± 8.3 kg, height: 173.5 ± 4.7 cm) with training experience who performed body mass CMJs and five loaded CMJs were included. We calculated the braking rate of force development (B-RFD), amortisation force (AmF), EMF, and LMF, as well as the theoretical maximum force (F0) and velocity (V0) of the force-velocity profile. Correlation analyses per variable identified significant negative correlations of B-RFD and AmF with the LMF, but not of B-RFD and AmF with the jump height. Additionally, V0 was significantly correlated with the LMF. Therefore, increasing the initial concentric force by increasing the braking and amortisation forces may not contribute to jump height owing to a decrease in the latter-half concentric force due to the force-velocity relationship.

This study aimed to investigate the preventive effects of the FIFA 11+ for one-season and over three consecutive seasons on the injury incidence rates in collegiate female football players in terms of duration of intervention. A total of 763 collegiate female football players from seven teams belonging to Kanto University Women Football Association Division 1 in 2013-2015 seasons were included in the study. At the start of the study, 235 players were assigned to a FIFA 11+ intervention group (four teams, 115 players) and a control group (three teams, 120 players). The intervention period was set to three seasons, and the players were followed up during this period. The one-season effect of the FIFA 11+ was investigated after each season. The effect of continuous intervention was verified in 66 and 62 players from the intervention and control groups who continued the study for all three seasons, respectively. The one-season intervention showed significantly lower total, ankle, knee, sprain, ligament injury, noncontact, moderate and severe injury incidence rates in the intervention group in each season. Regarding the continuous intervention, compared with the first season, the injury incidence rates in lower extremity, ankle, and sprain, decreased in the intervention group by 66.0%, 79.8%, and 82.2%, respectively, in the second season, and by 82.6%, 94.6%, and 93.4%, respectively, in the third season, indicating the persistent effect of the FIFA 11+. In conclusion, the FIFA 11+ is an effective program for lower extremity injury prevention in collegiate female football players, and preventive effects persist with continuation of the program.

Single-leg landing (SLL) stability deficits are common dysfunctions after lateral ankle sprain (LAS), and are associated with reinjury and needs to be addressed. SLL stability deficits could be associated with impact absorption ability. Thus, we evaluated these relationships. We recruited 46 patients with chronic ankle instability (CAI) and 64 control patients and measured their kinematics, SLL stability, and impact absorption ability. The SLL stability was evaluated by calculating the anterior-posterior stability index (APSI) and medial-lateral stability index (MLSI). The impact absorption ability was evaluated by calculating the energy absorption (EA). The large negative value of the EA indicated the absorption of a large amount of energy. The Japanese version of identification of functional ankle instability (IdFAI-J) score (P < 0.001), MLSI value (P = 0.004), and sagittal plane ankle EA value (less EA at ankle joint) (P < 0.001) were significantly high in CAI, and sagittal plane knee EA value (more EA at knee joint) (P < 0.041) was significantly low in CAI than in the control group. Multiple regression analysis showed that the APSI was associated with sagittal plane ankle EA (ß = 0.275, P = 0.004). The MLSI was associated with sagittal plane ankle EA (ß = 0.204, P = 0.034) and the idFAI score (ß = 0.234, P = 0.015). The SLL stability impairment after LAS was related to decreased impact absorption ability at the ankle joint.

Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the effects of an experimental short-time warm-up consisting of a small number of intermittent high-intensity sprints on explosive muscle strength performance in soccer players and to identify recovery times after performing the sprints. Furthermore, we evaluated the reliability of a smartphone app in jumping performance. Methods: Twenty male soccer players were given the following tests: 1) the counter-movement jump (CMJ) test with the Microgate system, 2) the counter-movement jump (CMJ) test with the MyJump smartphone app, and 3) the handgrip strength test. The experimental short-time high-intensity warm-up was carried out 1 week after test administration. The warm-up consisted of three maximum sprints over 60 m with 120 s of recovery between sprints. Then, the tests were administered again: the vertical jump height (VJH) performances (five trials) were measured 90 s after the last sprint; the handgrip strength performances (three trials) were measured 120 s after the last vertical jump test. Results: The maximum VJH was found in the third trial of the CMJ test, 330 s after the last sprint (p < 0.01), the result closest to the baseline. The lowest VJH was found in the first trial of the CMJ test, 90 s after the last sprint (p < 0.05). Pearson's analysis between the CMJ test with the Microgate system and the CMJ test with MyJump showed a strong correlation (R = 0.96). Lin's concordance correlation coefficient showed a substantial concordance (ρc = 0.959) between measures. Conclusion: This experimental short-time warm-up of high-intensity intermittent sprints appears to be a simple, quick, and efficient activity to accelerate soccer players' optimal performance.

INTRODUCTION: Self-massage using a foam roller (foam rolling) has been used to improve joint range of motion (ROM). However, the effect of foam rolling on the morphology of a targeted muscle, tendon, and muscle-tendon unit (MTU) has not been fully clarified. This study aimed to investigate extensibility changes in the gastrocnemius muscle (GM), MTU, and the Achilles tendon (AT) in terms of maximum ankle dorsiflexion (max-DF) following a foam rolling intervention. This was an interventional study with no controls. METHODS: Study participants comprised 10 male and female students (mean [standard deviation]: 22.7 [2.5] years; height, 164.2 [6.7] cm; weight, 57.9 [7.9] kg). The foam rolling intervention was performed on the right leg plantar flexor muscles for 3 min. The outcomes were max-DF with specified resistance values (ROM-SR) and non-specified resistance values (ROM-NSR) and GM, MTU, and AT extensibility. An ultrasound device was used to determine the rate of change by subtracting the value in a neutral ankle joint position (0°) from the ankle max-DF to identify GM, MTU, and AT extensibility. All outcomes were measured pre- and post-intervention. RESULTS: The range of ankle joint dorsiflexion increased significantly following the foam rolling intervention (Δ: ROM-SR, +4.35 [5.79]; ROM-NSR, +4.18 [4.43]), whereas GM extensibility increased 4.0 mm, although no significant difference was observed pre- and post-intervention. CONCLUSION: Foam rolling was effective in increasing ankle joint dorsiflexion ROM. Moreover, it was suggested that the GM morphology might be affected by the intervention.

OBJECTIVES: To examine the incidence and survival rates of sudden cardiac arrest that were documented during school organized sports in Japan. DESIGN: Retrospective cohort study. METHODS: Insurance claim data of cardiac events (sudden cardiac death and sudden cardiac arrest with resultant disabilities) that occurred during Japanese high school organized sports between 2009 and 2018 were retrieved. Participation data from All Japan High School Athletic Federation and Japan High School Baseball Federation were used for incidence rate calculations. Incidence rate ratios with 95 % confidence interval were calculated to compare the risk by sports and sex. The survival rate was calculated with the proportion of resuscitated cases to total number of cardiac events in this dataset. RESULTS: A total of 55 cardiac events (25 survivors and 30 deceased) were identified in the dataset. The majority affected male student-athletes (92.7 %). The frequency and incidence rate of cardiac events were highest in male baseball (n = 16 [29.1 %], incidence rate: 0.91 per 100,000 athlete-years). Incidence rate ratio revealed that male basketball (2.19, 95 % confidence interval: 1.04-4.60), male baseball (2.31, 95 % confidence interval: 1.32-4.03), and first-year male baseball (4.11, 95 % confidence interval: 2.10-8.07) had significantly higher risk of cardiac events, compared to the overall incidence rate (0.38 per 100,000 athlete-years). The survival rates were 37.5 % in the first half (2009-2013) and 56.5 % in the latter half (2014-2018) of the study period. CONCLUSIONS: The risk of cardiac events was highest in male, baseball, first-year student-athletes. Rapid AED application by bystanders should be advocated to enhance better survival.

Background: Previous studies have shown that performing the Nordic hamstring exercise (NHE) with different board slope angles can affect hamstring activation. However, changes in muscle length with different board slopes can alter joint angles leading to the moment arm (MA) at the knee changing during the NHE. Purpose: This study aimed to investigate the influence of changing muscle length on hamstring electromyographic activity during an isometric NHE, while maintaining an equal moment arm. Study Design: A crossover study design. Methods: Sixteen male volunteers performed two types of conventional NHE, one with knees on the floor (NHE) and one with the legs placed upon an incline slope of a lower leg board (NHEB). To compare between the conventional and inclined NHE, the moment arm at the knee was calculated to be equal by an examiner holding the lower legs at points marked at 77% and 94% of the length of the lower leg. The four sub-groups comprised of: 1) NHE-77%, 2) NHE-94%, 3) NHEB-77%, and 4) NHEB-94%. The hamstring EMG activity was measured at the biceps femoris long head (BFlh) and at the semitendinosus (ST) and related compensatory muscles. The RMS data were normalized as a percentage of the maximum isometric values (normalized EMG [nEMG]). Significant main effects findings were followed up with Tukey's post-hoc test using SPSS software and statistical significance was set at the p < 0.05 level. Results: The BFlh EMG activity values for NHE-77% were significantly higher than those for NHE-94% (p= 0.036) and NHEB-77% (p < 0.001), respectively, while ST during NHE-77% was significantly higher only in NHEB-77% (p < 0.001). In addition, NHEB-94% was significantly greater than NHEB-77% for both BFlh (p < 0.001) and ST (p < 0.001). Conclusion: These results indicate that hamstring electromyographic activity is decreased when the hamstring muscle is lengthened during the Nordic hamstring exercise. Level of Evidence: 3.

The neuromuscular activity in the hamstring and quadriceps muscles is vital for rapid force control during athletic movements. This study aimed to investigate the recruitment properties of the corticospinal pathway of the biceps femoris long head (BFlh) and rectus femoris (RF) muscles. Thirty-two male subjects were participated in this study. Corticospinal excitability was investigated for BFlh and RF during the isometric knee flexion and extension tasks, respectively, using transcranial magnetic stimulation. A sigmoidal relationship was observed between the stimulus intensity and amplitude of motor-evoked potentials and characterized by a plateau value, maximum slope, and threshold. Compared with RF, BFlh had a significantly lower plateau value (P < 0.001, d = 1.17), maximum slope (P < 0.001, r = 0.79), and threshold (P = 0.003, d = 0.62). The results showed that the recruitment properties of the corticospinal pathway significantly differ between BFlh and RF. These results reveal that when a sudden large force is required during athletic movements, the RF can produce force through a rapid increase in the recruitment of motor units. The BFlh, on the other hand, requires larger or more synchronized motor commands for enabling the proper motor unit behavior to exert large forces. These differences in the neurophysiological factors between the hamstrings and quadriceps can have a substantial effect on the balance of force generation during athletic activities.

CONTEXT: This study aimed to examine the differences in electromyographic (EMG) activity of the biceps femoris long head (BFlh) and semitendinosus (ST) muscles, break-point angle (BPA), and the angle at peak BFlh EMG activity between bilateral and unilateral Nordic hamstring exercise (NHE) on a sloped platform. DESIGN: This study was designed as a case-control study. METHODS: Fourteen men participated in the study. The participants initially performed maximum voluntary isometric contraction (MVIC) on the prone leg curl to normalize the peak hamstring EMG amplitude as the %MVIC. Then, participants were randomized to perform the following 3 variations of NHE: bilateral (N40) or unilateral (N40U) NHE with a platform angle of 40°, and unilateral NHE with a platform angle of 50° (N50U). The EMG activities of the BFlh and ST and the knee flexion angle during the NHE variations were recorded to calculate the EMG activity of the BFlh and ST in terms of the %MVIC, the angle at peak BFlh EMG, and BPA. RESULTS: The BFlh %MVIC was significantly higher in N40U (P < .05) and N50U (P < .05) than in N40. A significant difference in BFlh %MVIC and ST %MVIC was observed between N40U (P < .05) and N50U (P < .05). The mean values of BPA and the angle at peak BFlh EMG were <30° for all NHE variations. CONCLUSIONS: In the late swing phase of high-speed running, BFlh showed higher EMG activity; thus, unilateral NHE may be a specific hamstring exercise for hamstring injury prevention.

Hamstring strain often occurs when an opponent unanticipatedly perturbs an athlete's movements. We examined the neuromuscular responses of hamstring and trunk muscles during unanticipated trunk perturbations in athletes with and without a history of hamstring strain injury. Male college athletes (11 with a history of a unilateral hamstring injury and 10 without prior injury) knelt while wearing a chest harness attached to a cable that was pulled backward. They were instructed to resist the force isometrically and maintain their position when the perturbations were applied. The pressure was released with or without a cue (CUE or NoCUE). We measured trunk acceleration, three-dimensional kinematic data, and surface electromyography (EMG) signals of the erector spinae, internal oblique, gluteus maximus, biceps femoris long head, and semitendinosus muscles. Maximum trunk acceleration and displacement were greater with NoCUE in both groups (p < 0.05). EMG amplitude did not differ after perturbation of any investigated muscle. The injured group demonstrated a delayed onset of the gluteus maximus and erector spinae muscles in NoCUE versus CUE stimuli (p < 0.05). Athletes with a history of hamstring strain injury exhibited a reduced neuromuscular coordination of the lumbopelvic muscles in response to unanticipated trunk movement.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the effect of the number of high-acceleration movements on muscle damage and the rating of perceived exertion (RPE) in basketball games. METHODS: Twenty-one male collegiate basketball players (mean age, 20.0 [1.0] y) were included. A triaxial accelerometer was used to measure acceleration in basketball-simulated scrimmages. To detect higher physical load during the actual game, the resultant acceleration was calculated, and 3 thresholds were set: >4G, >6G, and >8G resultant accelerations. The number of the extracted movements was calculated at each acceleration threshold. Plasma creatine kinase (CK) levels (marker of muscle damage) were estimated before and 24 hours after the match, and the session-RPE load was calculated within 30 minutes after the match. Pearson product-moment correlations with 95% confidence intervals were used to determine the relationships between the number of high-acceleration movements and plasma CK and session-RPE load. RESULTS: Significant correlations were observed between the number of high-acceleration movements >8G and CK level (r = .74; 95% confidence interval, 0.44-0.89; P < .0001). Furthermore, the correlation coefficient between acceleration and CK increased with increased acceleration threshold (>4G: r = .65; >6G: r = .69). Contrastingly, the correlation coefficient between acceleration and the session-RPE load decreased with increased acceleration threshold (>4G: r = .72; >6G: r = .52; >8G: r = .43). CONCLUSIONS: The session-RPE reflects the total amount of movement, while the high-acceleration movement reflects the momentary large impact load or intensity, and they evaluated different factors. Basketball coaching and conditioning professionals recommended combining acceleration and session-RPE when monitoring the load of athletes.

PURPOSE: To examine differences in resistance exercise-induced hormonal responses among young athletes according to their maturity levels. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 12 collegiate and 32 junior high school male athletes were enrolled. The junior high school participants were divided into pre-peak height velocity (PHV) and post-PHV groups, according to their PHV ages. The salivary testosterone, cortisol, and human growth hormone levels were analyzed before (pre), immediately after (post), and at 15 minutes after performing body weight resistance exercise. RESULTS: The testosterone levels were higher in the collegiate than in the junior high school group (P < .01) and increased after 15 minutes of exercise (P < .01). A significant decrease in the cortisol levels postexercise in the junior high school groups (P < .01) and an increase in the human growth hormone levels at 15 minutes after exercise in the post-PHV group were observed (P < .01). In the collegiate and post-PHV groups, the testosterone-to-cortisol ratio increased post and at 15 minutes after exercise (P < .01). The testosterone-to-cortisol ratio values were higher in the collegiate than in the post-PHV (at preexercise and at 15 min after [P < .01]) and pre-PHV groups (at all times [P < .01]). CONCLUSION: Exercise-induced acute hormonal responses to resistance exercise may depend on individuals' maturity levels, even in those having the same age.
