RESUMO

This study examined the effect of two interventions (didactic and perspective-taking) on five dimensions of heterosexism (hostile, aversive, amnestic, paternalistic, and positive stereotypic). Participants were 117 undergraduate students, randomly assigned to one of three groups in this posttest-only control group experiment. After the intervention, the participants completed measures of sexual prejudice, right-wing authoritarianism (RWA), gender role beliefs (GRB), and a demographic questionnaire. Results from the first step of hierarchical regression models showed that RWA and GRB were significantly predictive of all dimensions of heterosexism except for positive stereotypic, accounting for 13.8% to 56.7% of the variance. This suggests that interventions targeting sexual prejudice should examine both variables. When between-group comparisons were added during the second step, the didactic intervention in comparison with the control group was significantly predictive of lower paternalistic heterosexism; the perspective-taking intervention in comparison with the control group was significantly predictive of lower positive stereotypic heterosexism.

RESUMO

Latinx women face a myriad of unique pressures to meet unrealistic standards of beauty that are not captured in the dominant, Eurocentric framework of beauty and body image in the U.S. The majority of the extant body image literature represents the experiences of White women and overlooks salient body areas that women of color may experience dissatisfaction with. The present researchers employed a convergent-parallel mixed methods design to examine demographic differences as well as the lived experiences of Latinx women's relationship with beauty and their bodies. Quantitative results from 118 participants revealed that Latinx women with an annual income< 60k (54.2%) reported a higher discrepancy between their actual and ideal buttock size compared to Latinx women with an annual income> 60k (45.8%). Furthermore, a thematic analysis revealed four emergent themes that reflected the unique perceptions and lived experiences of 98 Latinx women's experiences with body image. Findings may assist clinicians working with Latinx women, as they will be able to better understand and integrate relevant cultural aspects of body dissatisfaction when working with Latinx clients.

RESUMO

This article explores the ethical and clinical issues that may arise when utilizing group psychotherapy to work with transgender and gender diverse (TGD) individuals. Considering the unique barriers to mental health services experienced by this community, the authors identify ethical standards that may be especially salient in this work, including: justice and respect for people's rights and dignity, competence, consent, and navigating multiple relationships. The article also explores the authors' TGD therapy group and how they have worked with and addressed such ethical considerations and concerns.
