RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Antibiotics are commonly used in both outpatient and inpatient settings and are responsible for the majority of adverse drug reaction (ADR) reports. We aimed to characterize spontaneously reported ADRs associated with antibiotics and assessing the preventability of these ADRs in a Vietnamese setting. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We conducted a retrospective descriptive study based on ADRs related to antibiotics spontaneously reported by healthcare workers to the National Pharmacovigilance Database of Vietnam (NPDV) between June 2018 and May 2019. The characteristics of included reports were descriptively analyzed. The preventability of reported ADRs was assessed using a standardized preventability scale. We identified the leading causes and described the characteristics associated with preventable ADRs (pADRs). RESULTS: We included 6385 antibiotic-related reports from a total of 12,056 reports submitted to the NPDV during the study period. Beta-lactam antibiotics, mostly broad-spectrum with parenteral route, were suspected in the majority cases. The most commonly reported pADRs were allergic reactions, mostly classified under skin and subcutaneous tissue disorders. Of all included cases, 537 cases (8.4%) were deemed as associated with pADRs. Major causes of pADRs include potentially inappropriate prescribing (352/537, 65.5%) and re-administration of antibiotics causing prior allergy/allergies (99/537, 18.4%). The majority of pADRs involved the use of beta-lactam antibiotics with inappropriate indications. CONCLUSION: ADRs related to antibiotic use represent more than half of ADRs spontaneously reported in Vietnam. Approximately one in every ten reported cases is associated with pADRs. The majority pADRs can be prevented through simple improvement in antibiotic prescribing practices.

RESUMO

Nine compounds including a new one, garcichaudiic acid (1), were isolated from the bark of G. gaudichaudii and their structures were characterized mainly by 1 D and 2 D NMR experiments. The antioxidant capacity of the isolated compounds was determined using DPPH radical scavenging assay and the anti-hyperglycemic activity was assessed by measuring the inhibitory effect against α-glucosidase. Among them, compound 4 showed higher antioxidant activity than the positive control, ascorbic acid, while both compounds 1 and 7 exhibited more significant α-glucosidase inhibitory activity than the reference drug acarbose. Molecular docking analysis of the bioactive compounds was also performed to examine the binding modes and key interactions with the catalytic site.

RESUMO

Previous studies have either learned drug's features from their string or numeric representations, which are not natural forms of drugs, or only used genomic data of cell lines for the drug response prediction problem. Here, we proposed a deep learning model, GraOmicDRP, to learn drug's features from their graph representation and integrate multiple -omic data of cell lines. In GraOmicDRP, drugs are represented as graphs of bindings among atoms; meanwhile, cell lines are depicted by not only genomic but also transcriptomic and epigenomic data. Graph convolutional and convolutional neural networks were used to learn the representation of drugs and cell lines, respectively. A combination of the two representations was then used to be representative of each pair of drug-cell line. Finally, the response value of each pair was predicted by a fully connected network. Experimental results indicate that transcriptomic data shows the best among single -omic data; meanwhile, the combinations of transcriptomic and other -omic data achieved the best performance overall in terms of both Root Mean Square Error and Pearson correlation coefficient. In addition, we also show that GraOmicDRP outperforms some state-of-the-art methods, including ones integrating -omic data with drug information such as GraphDRP, and ones using -omic data without drug information such as DeepDR and MOLI.

RESUMO

Transparent-wood (TW) is an emerging research topic that can be applied to biobased products. However, it is necessary to fill pores in TW with natural substances to prepare all-biobased TW. This paper reports an all-biobased TW by infiltrating cellulose nanofiber (CNF) and chitosan (CTS) suspensions into the bleached wood. CNF was isolated by combining the chemical and physical methods, and CTS was dissolved in acetic acid, and they were infiltrated into the pores of the bleached Fir veneer wood using a vacuum jar. The CNF and chitosan effects on the mechanical properties of the TW were studied, and the morphologies, crystallinity index, water contact angle, antioxidant, thermal degradation, and UV-shielding properties were investigated. The prepared TW showed 80 % total transmittance and 30-60 % haze, suitable for solar cell application. The all-biobased TW showed good thermal stability up to 315 °C and excellent UV shielding property for UV-B and UV-C. The antioxidant property of the CTS-TW significantly increased as compared to the original wood. The CNF-TW showed considerable tensile strength and yield strength of more than 200 % improved from the original wood. The potential for environment-friendly packaging applications was demonstrated by making a bag, medicine packaging, and straw for a drink.

RESUMO

@#Raw or undercooked fish dishes are the major sources of human infection of fishborne trematodes (FBT) and the situation of metacercarial infection in fish greatly affect the prevalence in humans, especially those fish that are commonly used for raw consumption. To investigate the situation of infection with metacercaria of FBT in fish often used to prepare raw fish dishes by local people to assess the risk of infection to humans in Ninh Binh province, Vietnam. 345 fish belonging to five species of freshwater and one species of brackish water fish were collected from fishermen or small-scale fish dealers in Kim Son and Yen Khanh districts, Ninh Binh province between May 2017 and May 2018. Metacercaria of FBT was discovered by pepsin and hydrochloric acid digestion techniques and identified by the morphological and molecular analysis. Among examined fish, 44.06% infected with FBT metacercaria and the highest prevalence was in Cyprinus carpio (86.54%), Ctenopharyngodon idellus (78.43%) and Hypophthalmichthys molitrix (66.67%) while Konosirus punctatus – the brackish water fish – were free from infection. Three species of FBT were found; namely Haplorchis pumilio (accounting for 99.84% of collected metacercariae), Haplorchis taichui and Clonorchis sinensis. The average density was 1.06 metacercariae per gram of freshwater fish and the highest number was of C. idellus (6.38 cysts/gram) followed by Cirrhinus molitorella and C. carpio. Results of the study show the high prevalence of infection of FBT metacercariae among freshwater fish often used to prepare raw fish dishes in Ninh Binh province. These findings suggest the need for greater awareness of the risk from raw fish dishes among public health authorities and people.

RESUMO

This study was carried out to investigate the properties of pectin extracted from Vietnamese mango peels that have been discarded as waste. Three different mango cultivars named Hoa Loc, Ghep and Cat Chu at three different maturities were studied. Pectin extracted from immature, ripe and overripe stages ranged from 18.4 to 31.7 g/100 g dry weight (DW); the highest yields were obtained from the ripe fruits. Ghep peels contained the highest pectin amounts which ranged from 24.2 to 31.7 g/100 g DW, followed by Cat Chu (19.2 to 26.5 g/100 g DW) and Hoa Loc peels (18.4 to 24.1 g/100 g DW). Except for degree of esterification and emulsion capacity, other properties of the extracted pectin including water holding capacity, solubility and emulsion stability were significantly affected by the fruit maturation. Varieties, solubility, degree of esterification, emulsion activity and emulsion stability of the pectin isolated from the three cultivars ranged from 77.4% to 86.0%; 50.3% to 55.8%; 11.8% to 34.3% and 28.5% to 94.5%, respectively. Fourier-transform infrared results showed that almost all collected pectin samples could be classified as the high methoxyl pectin. Rheology data indicated viscosity of the isolated pectin was strongly dependent on temperatures.

RESUMO

The BCG vaccine was introduced in 1921 and remains the only licensed vaccine for the prevention of TB worldwide. Despite its extensive use, the BCG vaccine lacks the ability to fully control the TB-endemic and -pandemic situations. The BCG vaccine is most effective in preventing pediatric TB, in particular, miliary TB and tuberculous meningitis. However, it has a limited effect in preventing pulmonary TB, which occurs more frequently in adults. BCG vaccination has now been implemented in more than 157 countries worldwide. For various countries, the benefits of vaccination are only limited and potentially not cost effective. The International Union Against Tuberculosis and Lung Diseases had set the criteria for discontinuation of BCG vaccination in 1994. This decision, however, was not based on economic considerations. Many developed countries have met the criteria set by the International Union Against Tuberculosis and Lung Disease and stopped universal BCG vaccination. For developing countries, the BCG vaccine is still an effective intervention in protecting young children from TB infection. A lot of effort has been spent on R&D of new TB vaccines, the first of which are expected to be available within 5-7 years from now. Novel TB vaccines are expected to be better and more effective than the current BCG vaccine and should provide a viable strategy in controlling TB morbidity and mortality. In this review, the aim is to explore economic evaluations that have been carried out for vaccination against TB worldwide. In addition to epidemiological evidence, economic evidence can play a crucial role in supporting the governments of countries in making proper public health decisions on BCG vaccination policies, in particular, to implement, continue, or discontinue.

RESUMO

At our academic institution, we have noticed repeated examples of both false-positive and false-negative MR diagnoses in breast cancer. The most common diagnostic errors in interpreting MRI of the breast are discussed in this review and experience-based advice is provided to avoid similar mistakes. The most common reasons for false-positive diagnoses are misinterpretation of artefacts, confusion between normal enhancing structures and tumours and, above all, insufficient use of the American College of Radiology breast imaging reporting and data system lexicon, whereas false-negative diagnoses are made as a result of missed tiny enhancement, a background-enhancing breast, or enhancement interpreted as benign rather than malignant.

RESUMO

Granulosa cell tumors of the ovary are rare, and included in the sex cord-stromal tumor category. They have a low malignancy potential and generally have a good prognosis. They are the most frequent hormone-secreting tumors of the ovary and may lead to suggestive clinical symptoms. Some biological markers (serum inhibin B and AMH) may be helpful for diagnosis, though their sensitivity is not perfect. Preoperative imaging diagnosis remains challenging due to the wide variability in morphology and lack of epidemiological data in the imaging literature (small patient populations). From a review of the clinical and MR imaging features of three cases of granulosa cell tumor of the adult and a review of the literature, we will describe a few imaging features that may suggest the correct diagnosis.
