RESUMO

BACKGROUND: There are few reports on transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) for the evaluation of valvular heart disease in a specific area or region. METHODS AND RESULTS: This cross-sectional questionnaire-based survey was conducted in 2023 in Kumamoto Prefecture, where 106 hospitals provide cardiology services. Ninety-three (88%) of the hospitals completed questionnaires regarding TTE. The severity of low flow/low gradient AS was evaluated by dobutamine stress echocardiography in only 7% of hospitals and exercise stress echocardiography for asymptomatic mitral regurgitation in only 5%. Multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed that participation in remote multi-institutional echocardiographic meetings and use of the Kumamoto Prefecture echocardiographic manual were significantly associated with the use of a multi-window approach (P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: In Kumamoto Prefecture, echocardiographic measurements are performed according to the recommendations at a relatively low rate. Dissemination of recommendations through remote meetings and the use of the echocardiographic manual may increase the likelihood of TTE being performed according to the recommendations.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Tumor markers are commonly used for cancer screening and as indicators of therapeutic effects. Certain types of tumor have been known to produce a variety of porphyrins after 5-aminolevulinic acid (ALA) administration. In this study, porphyrins in tumor-bearing mouse urine were analyzed after oral administration of ALA in order to identify new tumor markers excreted in the urine. METHODS: Porphyrin concentrations in the urine of tumor-bearing mice were measured after administration of 1.0mg of ALA (approximately 50mgkg(-1)). RESULTS: Porphyrin concentrations in the urine of tumor-bearing mice increased after administration of ALA. HPLC analysis of the urine revealed the existence of uroporphyrin (UP) and coproporphyrin (CP) in the urine of ALA-treated tumor-bearing mice. Furthermore, at 3h after ALA administration, UP concentrations in the urine of tumor-bearing mice significantly increased compared to those in the urine of normal mice. CONCLUSION: These results suggest that UP as a precursor of heme detected in the urine of tumor-bearing mice after ALA administration is a potential marker of tumor development.

RESUMO

Surface-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (SALDI-MS) indicated AgBr2-, which adsorbed on gold nanorod surfaces, was a key material to control the anisotropic growth of gold nanorods.

RESUMO

Photothermal reshaping of gold nanorods was triggered by pulsed-laser irradiation. The efficiency of the reshaping was strongly dependent on the surface conditions of the gold nanorods. When the gold nanorods were dispersed in concentrated hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB), the gold nanorods were efficiently transformed into a phi-shape. By comparison when poly(styrene sulfonate), poly(vinylpyrrolidone), poly(ethylene glycol), or phosphatidylcholine layers were used, the CTAB layers were found to be a better thermal insulator that helped to enhance the photothermal reshaping of the gold nanorods.

RESUMO

Colloidal gold nanorods (GNRs), which were passivated with cationic cerasome-forming lipids having triethoxysilyl groups, were obtained in the aqueous phase by sonication of the mixture of lipids and GNRs.
