RESUMO

The presence of prolonged symptoms after COVID infection worsens the workability and quality of life. 200 adults with long COVID syndrome were enrolled after medical, physical, and mental screening, and were divided into two groups based on their performance. The intervention group (n = 100) received supervised rehabilitation at Department of Pulmonology, Semmelweis University with the registration number 160/2021 between 01/APR/2021-31/DEC/2022, while an age-matched control group (n = 100) received a single check-up. To evaluate the long-term effects of the rehabilitation, the intervention group was involved in a 2- and 3-month follow-up, carrying out cardiopulmonary exercise test. Our study contributes understanding long COVID rehabilitation, emphasizing the potential benefits of structured cardiopulmonary rehabilitation in enhancing patient outcomes and well-being. Significant difference was found between intervention group and control group at baseline visit in pulmonary parameters, as forced vital capacity, forced expiratory volume, forced expiratory volume, transfer factor for carbon monoxide, transfer coefficient for carbon monoxide, and oxygen saturation (all p < 0.05). Our follow-up study proved that a 2-week long, patient-centered pulmonary rehabilitation program has a positive long-term effect on people with symptomatic long COVID syndrome. Our data showed significant improvement between two and three months in maximal oxygen consumption (p < 0.05). Multidisciplinary, individualized approach may be a key element of a successful cardiopulmonary rehabilitation in long COVID conditions, which improves workload, quality of life, respiratory function, and status of patients with long COVID syndrome.

PURPOSE: Our aim was to evaluate the accuracy of a combined airway inflammatory biomarker assessment in diagnosing asthma in elite water sports athletes. METHODS: Members of the Hungarian Olympic and Junior Swim Team and elite athletes from other aquatic disciplines were assessed for asthma by objective lung function measurements, and blood eosinophil count (BEC), serum total IgE, FENO measurements, and skin prick testing were performed. A scoring system from BEC, FENO, serum IgE, and skin test positivity was constructed by dichotomising the variables and assigning a score of 1 if the variable is elevated. These scores were summed to produce a final composite score ranging from 0 to 4. RESULTS: A total of 48 participants were enrolled (age 21 ± 4 years, 42% male), of which 22 were diagnosed with asthma. Serum total IgE and FENO levels were higher in asthmatic individuals (68 [27-176] vs. 24 ([1-44], p = 0.01; 20 [17-26] vs. 15 [11-22], p = 0.02), and positive prick test was also more frequent (55% vs. 8%, p < 0.01). Asthmatic participants had higher composite variable scores (2 ([1-3] vs. 1 [0-1], p = 0.02). ROC analysis showed that total IgE, FENO, and the composite variable were suitable for identifying asthmatic participants (AUC 0.72, p = 0.01; 0.70, p = 0.02, and 0.69, p = 0.03). A composite score of >2 reached a specificity of 96.2%, sensitivity of 36.4%, and likelihood ratio of 9.5. Logistic regression model revealed a strong association between the composite variable and the asthma diagnosis (OR 2.71 (95% CI 1.17-6.23), p = 0.02). CONCLUSIONS: Our data highlight the diagnostic value of combined assessment of Th2-type inflammation in elite water sports athletes. The proposed scoring system may be helpful in ruling in asthma in this population upon clinical suspicion.

Viking sailors ruled the North Atlantic Ocean for about three hundred years. Their main sailing route was the 60° 21' 55'' latitude between Norway and Greenland. Although they did not have a magnetic compass, in sunshine they used a sun-compass to determine the geographical north (solar Viking navigation: SVN). It has been hypothesized that when the Sun was invisible, Viking navigators determined the direction of polarization of skylight with sunstones (dichroic/birefringent crystals), and then estimated the geographical north using the sun-compass (sky-polarimetric Viking navigation: SPVN). Many details of the hypothetical SPVN have been thoroughly revealed in psychophysical laboratory and planetarium experiments. Combining these results with measured celestial polarization patterns, the success of SPVN was obtained as functions of sailing, meteorological and navigation parameters (sunstone type, sailing date, navigation periodicity, night sailing, cloudiness conditions). What was so far lacking in this experimental and computational archeological approach is the study of the success of SVN and a combined navigation using solar cues in sunshine (SVN) and sky polarization at invisible Sun (SPVN), the latter being the most realistic method. In this work we determine the success of the sole SVN and the combined SVN-SPVN relative to the mere SPVN for three navigator types (determining the intended sailing direction with large, medium or small frequencies) at spring equinox and summer solstice, with and without night sailing. We found that to maximize the sailing success, navigators had to choose different navigation methods depending on the navigation frequency. Using sky polarization with very frequent navigation, resulted in the highest chance to survive a three-week voyage from Norway to Greenland.

The emergence of new digital technologies has enabled a new way of doing research, including active collaboration with the public ('citizen science'). Innovation in machine learning (ML) and natural language processing (NLP) has made automatic analysis of large-scale text data accessible to study individual perspectives in a convenient and efficient fashion. Here we blend citizen science with innovation in NLP and ML to examine (1) which categories of life events persons with multiple sclerosis (MS) perceived as central for their MS; and (2) associated emotions. We subsequently relate our results to standardized individual-level measures. Participants (n = 1039) took part in the 'My Life with MS' study of the Swiss MS Registry which involved telling their story through self-selected life events using text descriptions and a semi-structured questionnaire. We performed topic modeling ('latent Dirichlet allocation') to identify high-level topics underlying the text descriptions. Using a pre-trained language model, we performed a fine-grained emotion analysis of the text descriptions. A topic modeling analysis of totally 4293 descriptions revealed eight underlying topics. Five topics are common in clinical research: 'diagnosis', 'medication/treatment', 'relapse/child', 'rehabilitation/wheelchair', and 'injection/symptoms'. However, three topics, 'work', 'birth/health', and 'partnership/MS' represent domains that are of great relevance for participants but are generally understudied in MS research. While emotions were predominantly negative (sadness, anxiety), emotions linked to the topics 'birth/health' and 'partnership/MS' was also positive (joy). Designed in close collaboration with persons with MS, the 'My Life with MS' project explores the experience of living with the chronic disease of MS using NLP and ML. Our study thus contributes to the body of research demonstrating the potential of integrating citizen science with ML-driven NLP methods to explore the experience of living with a chronic condition.

The differences between the consecutive world-records of shot put and hammer throw tendentiously decrease. Therefore, nowadays it would be worth taking into account the influence of certain environmental factors on the range L, such as the latitude and release azimuth direction. Both factors exert influence on L by the centrifugal acceleration acentrigugal and Coriolis acceleration aCoriolis induced by the Earth's rotation. The aim of this work is to reveal how the world-record ranking numbers would change, if acentrigugal and aCoriolis as well as the athletes' height h were taken into account during the validation of the outdoor world records of senior female and male shot-putters and hammer-throwers. Using computer modelling, we reconstruct here the release velocities v of shots and hammers and the normalized muscle work of shot-putters achieved at the 20 best consecutive world records. We determined numerous changes of world-record ranking numbers of shot put and hammer throw due to the influence of acentrigugal, aCoriolis and h. Height h has the largest effect on the range L, acentrigugal has a medium influence, and aCoriolis possesses the least impact on L. The physically most correct way would be to consider the release velocity v of the shot/hammer (easily measurable with an ultrasound/laser Doppler gauge) as the real performance of athletes, because it is practically independent of the environmental factors, and thus is a much better ranking measure of world records than the range.

BACKGROUND: Many patients with previous COVID-19 infection suffer from prolonged symptoms after their recovery: cough, dyspnea, chest pain, shortness of breath, fatigue, anxiety or depression, regardless of milder or severe coronavirus infection. Review of the literature demonstrates underrepresented complex cardiopulmonary rehabilitation of patients with post-COVID syndrome. The aim of our quasi-experimental study was to evaluate the effectiveness of complex cardiopulmonary rehabilitation and to assess the quality of life, functional parameters before and after a 14-day specific cardiopulmonary rehabilitation and two months later. METHODS: Sixty-eight patients participated in rehabilitation at Semmelweis University's Department of Pulmonology. Respiratory function: forced expiratory volume in 1 second (FEV1%pred), 6-minute walk test (6MWT), chest kinematics (CK), quality of life [EuroQol-5D (EQ-5D), Post-COVID-19 Functional Status (PCFS)] and Modified Medical Research Council (mMRC) dyspnea scale were measured at the beginning and end of the programme and two months after the rehabilitation. RESULTS: The 14-day rehabilitation programme resulted in significant improvement of 6MWT {492 [interquartile range (IQR), 435-547] vs. 523 (IQR, 477-580) m; P=0.031}, mMRC [1 (IQR, 0.25-1) vs. 0 (IQR, 0-1); P=0.003], EQ-VAS score [75 (IQR, 65-80) vs. 85 (IQR, 75-90); P=0.015], and PCFS [1 (IQR, 1-2) vs. 0.5 (IQR, 0-1); P=0.032]. Respiratory function and chest kinematics also improved, FEV1(%pred) [86 (IQR, 73-103) vs. 91 (IQR, 80-99); P=0.360], chest kinematics [3.5 (IQR, 2.75-4.25) vs. 4 (IQR, 1-5.25) cm; P=0.296], and breath-holding test (BHT) [33 (IQR, 23-44) vs. 41 (IQR, 28-58) s; P=0.041]. CONCLUSIONS: Complex cardiopulmonary rehabilitation improved workload, quality of life, respiratory function, complaints and clinical status of patients with post-COVID syndrome. Personalized complex pulmonary rehabilitation can be beneficial and recommended for patients suffer from post-COVID syndrome, who have good potential for recovery and are able to participate in the two weeks complex pulmonary rehabilitation.

Acute infections with SARS-CoV-2 variants of concerns (VOCs) differ in clinical presentation. Discrepancies in their long-term sequelae, commonly referred to as long COVID, however, remain to be explored. We retrospectively analyzed data of 287 patients presented at the post-COVID care of the Pulmonology Department, Semmelweis University, Budapest, Hungary, and infected with SARS-CoV-2 during a period of 3 major epidemic waves in Hungary (February-July 2021, VOC: B.1.1.7, Alpha, N = 135; August-December 2021, VOC: B.1.617.2, Delta, N = 89; and January-June 2022, VOC: B.1.1.529, Omicron; N = 63), > 4 weeks after acute COVID-19. Overall, the ratio of long COVID symptomatic (LC) and asymptomatic (NS) patients was 2:1. Self-reported questionnaires on fatigue (Fatigue Severity Scale, FSS), sleepiness (Epworth Sleepiness Scale, ESS) and sleep quality (Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, PSQI) showed higher scores for LC (4.79 ± 0.12, 7.45 ± 0.33 and 7.46 ± 0.27, respectively) than NS patients (2.85 ± 0.16, 5.23 ± 0.32 and 4.26 ± 0.29, respectively; p < 0.05 for all vs. LC). By comparing data of the three waves, mean FSS and PSQI scores of LC patients, but not ESS scores, exceeded the normal range in all, with no significant inter-wave differences. Considering FSS ≥ 4 and PSQI > 5 cutoff values, LC patients commonly exhibited problematic fatigue (≥ 70%) and poor sleep quality (> 60%) in all three waves. Comparative analysis of PSQI component scores of LC patients identified no significant differences between the three waves. Our findings highlight the importance of concerted efforts to manage both fatigue and sleep disturbances in long COVID patient care. This multifaceted approach should be followed in all cases infected with either VOCs of SARS-CoV-2.

COVID-19 is often associated with long-lasting pulmonary symptoms. Data are scarce about interstitial lung disease (ILD) in patients following COVID-19 hospitalization with persistent symptoms. We retrospectively reviewed all cases sent to pulmonary post-COVID evaluation due to persistent symptoms between February 2021 and February 2022 (N = 318). All patients with suspected ILD (N = 44) were reviewed at the multidisciplinary discussion. Patient characteristics, symptoms, time since hospitalization, detailed lung function measurements and 6-min walk test (6MWT) were evaluated. The post-COVID ILD suspected group included more men (68.2 vs. 31.8%) with significantly older age compared to the control group (64.0 ± 12.3 vs. 51.3 ± 14.9 years). Most patient needed hospital care for COVID-19 pneumonia (68.6% of all patients and 84.1% of ILD suspected group) and average time since hospitalization was 2.4 ± 2.3 months. Persisting symptoms included fatigue (34%), dyspnoea (25.2%), cough (22.6%), and sleep disorders (insomnia 13.2%; sleepiness 8.2%). Post-COVID ILD presented more often with new symptoms of cough and sleepiness. Functional impairment, especially decreased walking distance and desaturation during 6-min walk test (6MWT) were detected in the ILD-suspected group. Respiratory function test in the post-COVID ILD group showed slight restrictive ventilatory pattern (FVC: 76.7 ± 18.1%, FEV1: 83.5 ± 19.1%, TLC: 85.6 ± 28.1%) and desaturation during 6MWT were detected in 41% of patients. LDCT changes were mainly ground glass opacities (GGO) and/or reticular abnormalities in most cases affecting < 10% of the lungs. Our data indicate that suspected post-COVID ILD is affecting 13.8% of symptomatic patients. High resolution chest CT changes were mainly low extent GGO/reticulation, while long-term lung structural changes need further evaluation.

There have been many investigations to improve both the physical and mechanical properties of oil well cement using a wide range of materials. Most of these additives are expensive and practically ineffective. In this article, a comprehensive evaluation was conducted for using Austrian pinecones powder (APCP) as an inexpensive supplementary cementing material (SCM) for well cement. Firstly, Portland cement class G was characterized based on X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF), X-Ray Diffraction (XRD). In this paper, the properties of the cement systems include rheological parameters, density, slurry stability (free water test, and sedimentation test), water absorption, porosity, permeability, the volume of fluid loss, pH value, thermogravimetric analysis, and the mechanical characteristics (in terms of compressive strength, tensile strength, flexural strength, and shear strength bond) were investigated in details. The cement sample containing the APCP was also examined using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). According to the experimental results, adding APCP led to increasing in rheological parameters. Also, led to decreasing in fluid loss, free water, sedimentation effect, and density which positively affects the preservation of the original properties of cement slurry. The results also showed a decrease in the permeability of cement samples and an increase in the porosity and the ability to absorb water. The addition of APCP did not significantly affect the pH values. The addition of APCP also deteriorated the mechanical properties of the cement samples. The addition of the APCP has contributed to an increase in total weight loss at high temperatures. So, the APCP can be considered as a new filler for well cement due to its ability to fill the pores in the cement matrix and at the same time improve some properties of the well cement such as density, free water, sedimentation, and fluid loss.

Several hypotheses tried to explain the advantages of zebra stripes. According to the most recent explanation, since the borderlines of sunlit white and black stripes can hamper thermal vessel detection by blood-seeking female horseflies, striped host animals are unattractive to these parasites which prefer hosts with a homogeneous coat, on which the temperature gradients above blood vessels can be detected more easily. This hypothesis has been tested in a field experiment with horseflies walking on a grey barrel with thin black stripes which were slightly warmer than their grey surroundings in sunshine, while in shade both areas had practically the same temperature. To eliminate the multiple (optical and thermal) cues of this test target, we repeated this experiment with improved test surfaces: we attracted horseflies by water- or host-imitating homogeneous black test surfaces, beneath which a heatable wire ran. When heated, this invisible and mechanically impalpable wire imitated thermally the slightly warmer subsurface blood vessels, otherwise it was thermally imperceptible. We measured the times spent by landed and walking horseflies on the test surface parts with and without underlying heated or unheated wire. We found that walking female and male horseflies had no preference for any (wired or wireless) area of the water-imitating horizontal plane test surface on the ground, independent of the temperature (heated or unheated) of the underlying wire. These horseflies looked for water, rather than a host. On the other hand, in the case of host-imitating test surfaces, female horseflies preferred the thin surface regions above the wire only if it was heated and thus warmer than its surroundings. This behaviour can be explained exclusively with the higher temperature of the wire given the lack of other sensorial cues. Our results prove the thermal vessel recognition of female horseflies and support the idea that sunlit zebra stripes impede the thermal detection of a host's vessels by blood-seeking horseflies, the consequence of which is the visual (non-thermal) unattractiveness of zebras to horseflies.

Multiple hypotheses have been proposed for possible functions of zebra stripes. The most thoroughly experimentally supported advantage of zebra stripes is their visual unattractiveness to horseflies (tabanids) and tsetse flies. We propose here a plausible hypothesis why biting horseflies avoid host animals with striped pelages: in sunshine the temperature gradients of the skin above the slightly warmer blood vessels are difficult to distinguish from the temperature gradients induced by the hairs at the borderlines of warmer black and cooler white stripes. To test this hypothesis, we performed a field experiment with tabanids walking on a host-imitating grey test target with vessel-mimicking thin black stripes which were slightly warmer than their grey surroundings in sunshine, while under shady conditions both areas had practically the same temperature as demonstrated by thermography. We found that horseflies spend more time walking on thin black stripes than surrounding grey areas as expected by chance, but only when the substrate is sunlit. This is because the black stripes are warmer than the surrounding grey areas in the sun, but not in the shade. This is consistent with the flies' well-documented attraction to warmer temperatures and provides indirect support for the proposed hypothesis. The frequent false vessel locations at the numerous black-white borderlines, the subsequent painful bitings with unsuccessful blood-sucking attempts and the host's fly-repellent reactions enhance considerably the chance that horseflies cannot evade host responses and are swatted by them. To eliminate this risk, a good evolutionary strategy was the avoidance of striped (and spotted) host animals.

Introduction and objective: Two-thirds of patients with hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection are unaware of their infection in the European Union. The WHO aims to reduce the number of new cases of chronic hepatitis by 90% by 2030. The proportion of people infected with HCV in prisons can be up to ten times higher compared to the general population. This article is a summary of the results of the HCV screening carried out in the Hungarian prisons between 2007 and 2017. Method: Screening of anti-HCV antibodies has been performed on a voluntary basis followed by HCV PCR and genotyping in positive cases. After obtaining written informed consent from the patients, treatment was started. Treatments were performed under the guidance of hepatologists in collaboration with prison medical staff. Results: HCV screening programs and treatments are in place in 84% of Hungarian prisons. A total of 25 384 patients underwent anti-HCV screening. Anti-HCV positive result was detected in 6.6% and HCV PCR positivity was confirmed in 3.8% of the screened inmates. 55.2% patients from the HCV PCR positive population were put on treatment. Only 143 patients received full treatment, while 162 (42.6%) treatments were terminated prematurely, and the duration of treatment was unknown in 75 patients. Based on the results available on the 24th week after the end of treatment, sustained virologic response rate was 88%. Discussion: Education of patients and collaboration between hepatologists and prison medical staff play an important role in the successful result of treatment. Conclusion: Our experience demonstrates that the test and treat principle is feasible and effective at microeliminating HCV in prisons.

In the Northern Hemisphere, south is the conventional azimuth direction of fixed-tilt monofacial solar panels, because this orientation may maximize the received light energy. How does the morning-afternoon cloudiness asymmetry affect the energy-maximizing azimuth direction of such solar panels? Prompted by this question, we calculated the total light energy received by a fixed-tilt monofacial solar panel in a whole year, using the celestial motion of the Sun and the direct and diffuse radiation measured hourly throughout the year in three North American (Boone County, Tennessee, Georgia) and European (Italy, Hungary, Sweden) regions. Here we show that, depending on the tilt angle and the local cloudiness conditions, the energy-maximizing ideal azimuth of a solar panel more or less turns eastward from south, if afternoons are cloudier than mornings in a yearly average. In certain cases, the turn of the ideal azimuth of such solar panels may be worth taking into consideration, even though the maximum energy gain is not larger than 5% for nearly vertical panels. Specifically, when solar panels are fixed on vertical walls or oblique roofs with non-ideal tilt, the deviation of the energy-maximizing azimuth from the south can be incorporated in the design of buildings.

Mature sunflower (Helianthus annuus) inflorescences, which no longer follow the Sun, face the eastern celestial hemisphere. Whether they orient toward the azimuth of local sunrise or the geographical east? It was recently shown that they absorb maximum light energy if they face almost exactly the geographical east, and afternoons are usually cloudier than mornings. However, the exact average and standard deviation (SD) of the azimuth angle of the normal vector of mature sunflower inflorescences have never been measured on numerous individuals. It is imaginable that they prefer the direction of sunrise rather than that of the geographical east. To decide between these two photobiological possibilities, we photographed mature inflorescences of 14 sunflower plantations using a drone and determined the average and SD of the azimuth angle of the normal vector of 2,800 sunflower heads. We found that the average azimuth αinflorescence = 89.5° ± 42.8° (measured clockwise from the geographical north) of inflorescences practically coincided with the geographical eastern direction (αeast = 90°) instead of the azimuth of local sunrise αsunrise = 56.14° - 57.55°. Although the SD of the orientation of individual inflorescences was large (± 42.8°), our finding experimentally corroborated the earlier theoretical prediction that the energetically ideal azimuth of sunflower inflorescences is east, if mornings are usually less cloudy than afternoons, which is typical for the domestication region of H. annuus. However, the average orientation of inflorescences of two plantations in hilly landscapes more or less differed from that of the majority of plantations in plane landscapes. The reason for this deviation may be that the illumination conditions in hilly sites more or less differed from those in plane landscapes. Furthermore, in a plantation, we observed a group of south-facing inflorescences that were in shadow for about 5 h both after sunrise and before sunset. This southern orientation can be explained by the southern maximum of total light energy absorbed by the partly shadowed inflorescences during the day, as computed by our software integrating both the diffuse skylight and the direct sunlight received by sunflower inflorescences.

Wild boars show increasing numbers and population densities throughout Europe, including Hungary. While their presence is appreciated as game animals, they are also responsible for significant agricultural damage, habitat degradation and water quality issues. In addition, wild boars may harbor ticks and can act as reservoirs of tick-borne pathogens, thus posing a risk of transmission towards humans and domestic animals. This latter aspect of their veterinary-medical and epidemiological significance has become especially important in recent years, because increasing numbers of wild boars are reported to enter urban areas. Despite of this, reports on tick infestations of wild boars are scarce in Europe. For this study, 333 ixodid ticks were collected from 51 wild boars at 32 peri-urban locations in 14 counties of Hungary, during 2005-2008 (older samples) and 2019-2020 (new samples). Five species of ticks were identified: Dermacentor reticulatus (n = 165), Ixodes ricinus (n = 90) and Haemaphysalis concinna (n = 29) in both sample groups, while H. inermis (n = 29) and D. marginatus (n = 20) were only found among the old samples. The seasonality of collected ticks corresponded to their known activities. After DNA extraction, ticks were screened for three groups of tick-borne pathogens. All samples were negative for brucellae, recently reported to be carried and transmitted transovarially by D. marginatus. Four D. reticulatus contained Babesia canis DNA, while in one H. concinna nymph the recently discovered zoonotic B. cf. crassa (reported in Slovenia within 80 km of our sampling site) was detected. In addition, Anaplasma phagocytophilum was identified in D. reticulatus (n = 1), H. concinna (n = 3) and in its known vector, I. ricinus (n = 15). Phylogenetically, three out of four A. phagocytophilum genotypes clustered with zoonotic ones. In conclusion, despite of the high prevalence of Brucella suis in wild boars in Hungary, no evidence was found in support of the epidemiological role of ticks in transmitting brucellae. On the other hand, wild boars might introduce B. canis-carrier D. reticulatus into urban areas, unlike birds (which are not known to carry this tick species in the country). Most importantly, tick-infested wild boars can contribute to the spread of a novel zoonotic Babesia sp. and of the zoonotic variants of A. phagocytophilum.

Although Viking sailors did not have a magnetic compass, they could successfully navigate with a sun-compass under a sunny sky. Under cloudy/foggy conditions, they might have applied the sky-polarimetric Viking navigation (SPVN), the high success of which has been demonstrated with computer simulations using the following input data: sky polarization patterns measured with full-sky imaging polarimetry, and error functions of the navigation steps measured in psychophysical laboratory and planetarium experiments. As a continuation of the earlier studies, in this work we investigate the sensitivity of the success of SPVN to the following relevant sailing, meteorological and navigational parameters: sunstone type, sailing date, navigation periodicity, night sailing, dominance of strongly, medium or weakly cloudy skies, and changeability of cloudiness. Randomly varying these parameters in the simulation of Viking voyages along the latitude 60° 21' 55'' N from Norway to Greenland, we determined those parameters which had strong and weak influences on the success of SPVN. The following intrinsic parameters of the simulation were also randomly changed: sailing speed, visibility distance of Greenland's southeast coastline and start time of diurnal sailing. Our results show that the sailing success is sensitive to the night sailing, navigation periodicity and sailing date, while it is robust against the sunstone type, dominance of strongly, medium or weakly cloudy skies, and changing cloudiness.

A hepatitis C virus (HCV) screening and treatment program was conducted in Hungarian prisons on a voluntary basis. After HCV-RNA testing and genotyping for anti-HCV positives, treatments with direct-acting antiviral agents were commenced by hepatologists who visited the institutions monthly. Patients were supervised by the prisons' medical staff. Data were retrospectively collected from the Hungarian Hepatitis Treatment Registry, from the Health Registry of Prisons, and from participating hepatologists. Eighty-four percent of Hungarian prisons participated, meaning a total of 5779 individuals (28% of the inmate population) underwent screening. HCV-RNA positivity was confirmed in 317/5779 cases (5.49%); 261/317 (82.3%) started treatment. Ninety-nine percent of them admitted previous intravenous drug use. So far, 220 patients received full treatment and 41 patients are still on treatment. Based on the available end of treatment (EOT) + 24 weeks timepoint data, per protocol sustained virologic response rate was 96.8%. In conclusion, the Hungarian prison screening and treatment program, with the active participation of hepatologists and the prisons' medical staff, is a well-functioning model. Through the Hungarian experience, we emphasize that the "test-and-treat" principle is feasible and effective at micro-eliminating HCV in prisons, where infection rate, as well as history of intravenous drug usage, are high.

After anthesis, the majority of mature sunflower (Helianthus annuus) inflorescences face constantly East, which direction ensures maximal light energy absorbed by the inflorescences in regions where afternoons are on average cloudier than mornings. Several theories have tried to explain the function(s) of this eastward orientation. Their common assumption is that eastward facing has certain advantages for sunflowers. In sunflower plantations, the capitulum of many plants can also face North, South, or upward. Large deviations from the conducive East direction can decrease the plant's reproductive fitness. A larger mass and number of seeds, for example, can guarantee safer seed germination and better early development of more offspring. Thus, our hypothesis was that the East facing of sunflower inflorescences ensures a larger seed number and mass compared to disoriented inflorescences. This idea was tested in a sunflower plantation, where we compared the number and mass of seeds in plants, the inflorescences of which were naturally or artificially oriented northward, eastward, southward, westward, or upward. Our study tested head diameter, seed weight, and seed number in a normal agronomic field setting being different from earlier investigations. The other difference was that we tested five head orientations and only East showed significantly increased seed weight and number. Using radiational computations, we showed that East facing ensures more absorbed light energy than other orientations, except upward. This finding can be one of the reasons for the maximal seed number and mass in East-facing sunflower capitula. Although upward-facing horizontal inflorescences absorbed maximal light energy, they had the fewest and lightest seeds probably because of the larger temperature and humidity as well as the too much sunlight, all three factors impairing the normal seed development. This study is the first that compares the seed traits of all head orientations of Helianthus annuus and proposes that the absorbed radiation could play a major role in the maximal seed number and mass of east-facing heads.

Autophagy is an intracellular degradation and recycling process that can also remove pathogenic intracellular bacteria and viruses from within cells (referred to as xenophagy) and activate the adaptive immune responses. But autophagy-especially Atg proteins including Atg8 family members-can also have proviral and probacterial effects. In this review, we summarize known interactions of bacterial, parasitic, and viral proteins with Atg8 family proteins and the outcome of these interactions on pathogen replication, autophagy, or mitophagy. We discuss the value of prediction software and the research methodology in the study of pathogen protein-Atg8 family protein interactions, with selected examples of potential LC3-interacting region motif-containing SARS-CoV-2 proteins.

There is a long-lasting debate about the possible functions of zebra stripes. According to one hypothesis, periodical convective air eddies form over sunlit zebra stripes which cool the body. However, the formation of such eddies has not been experimentally studied. Using schlieren imaging in the laboratory, we found: downwelling air streams do not form above the white stripes of light-heated smooth or hairy striped surfaces. The influence of stripes on the air stream formation (facilitating upwelling streams and hindering horizontal stream drift) is negligible higher than 1-2 cm above the surface. In calm weather, upwelling air streams might form above sunlit zebra stripes, however they are blown off by the weakest wind, or even by the slowest movement of the zebra. These results forcefully contradict the thermoregulation hypothesis involving air eddies.
