Background: The rising prevalence of familial multiple sclerosis (MS) in Iran has spurred interest in the potential impact of parental consanguinity on the risk of developing the disease. This study aims to aggregate current knowledge on parental consanguinity and its possible effect on MS risk, particularly among familial MS patients from various regions and ethnicities in Iran. The objective is to enhance the understanding of MS genetics and encourage further research in this field. Materials and methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted on clinically definite familial MS (FMS) patients registered in the nationwide MS registry of Iran (NMSRI). Data were extracted and supplemented with structured telephone follow-ups to gather detailed histories of MS in relatives and the familial relationships of the patients' parents. A family penetration score was proposed. Descriptive statistics and inferential statistical tests were used to analyze the data at a significance level of 0.05, adhering to ethical guidelines. Results: Out of 19,911 individuals registered in the NMSRI, 2307 FMS patients across 13 provinces were included in the final analysis. Among these, 385 (19.3 %) reported parental consanguinity, with 283 (14.2 %) having parents who were cousins and 102 (5.1 %) having parents who were distant relatives. The data showed no significant association between parental kinship and variables such as MS phenotype, number of affected relatives with MS, hospitalization rates, and expanded disability status scale score. Similarly, MS severity did not differ based on parental consanguinity (P-value >0.05). While the rate of consanguineous marriage was higher among patients with an onset age less than 18 years, there was no statistically significant difference in disease onset age based on parental consanguinity status. Conclusion: Our study highlights the complexity of factors influencing MS development, including genetic and environmental components. These results highlight the need for further research to achieve a more comprehensive understanding of MS etiology.

OBJECTIVE: The relationship between MS and ethnicity has been understudied in the Middle East compared to the United States and Europe. As Iran as the highest prevalence of MS in the Middle East, we decided to investigate the demographic and clinical differences in people with MS (pwMS) from major ethnicities Iran. METHODS: In a cross-sectional study using data from National Multiple Sclerosis Registry in Iran. PwMS from six provinces were chosen and interviewed for determining their ethnicity. Persians (Fars), Kurds, Lurs, Azeris and Arabs with a clear ethnic background were included. Recorded data from the registry was used to compare the demographic and clinical features. RESULTS: A total of 4015 pwMS (74.2% female) were included in the study with an average age of 36.76 ± 9.68 years. Persians and Kurds had the highest percentage of pwMS in youngest and oldest age groups, respectively, with 2.9% and 5.7% (p<0.01). The highest average age of onset was seen in Persians (29.47 ± 8.89) and the lowest observed in Mazandaranis (26.82 ± 7.68, p<0.01). Azeris and Kurds had the highest proportions of pwMS diagnosed <18 and >55, at rates of 12% and 1.6%, respectively (p<0.01). There were statistically significant differences in distribution of phenotypes (p<0.01) and time to progression to secondary progressive MS (p<0.01) such that Persians had the highest rate of clinically isolated syndrome (CIS) at 19.3% and Arabs had highest rates of relapsing-remitting MS (86.2%) and secondary progressive MS (16.4%). Lurs, Azeris and Mazandaranis had significantly more patients progressing to secondary-progressive MS <5 years from diagnosis (p<0.01). There was a significant difference in number of relapses between the ethnicities (p<0.01) with Lurs having the highest proportion of participants reporting >4 relapses with 23.0% and Azeris having the highest percentage of pwMS reporting no relapse (53.0%). Kurds had the highest Expanded Disability Status Scale (EDSS) average at 2.93 ± 1.99 and Lurs had the lowest with 1.28 ± 1.25 (p<0.01). The differences in prevalence of positive family history for the whole cohort between ethnicities were significant (P=0.02), ranging from 12.8% in Kurds to 19.6% in Persians. CONCLUSION: We found Persians to have higher rates of pediatric MS and higher rates of CIS. Kurds and Lurs had higher and lower EDSS scores, respectively. Lurs and Persian had higher annual relapse rates. We also found lower rates of SPMS among Arabs and earlier progression to SPMS in Lurs, Azeris and Mazandaranis. Such differences highlight the importance of the potential role of ethnicities in diagnosis and prognosis of MS, especially considering their observation within the geographical limits of a single country.

The therapeutic effects of extracellular vesicles (EVs) have been identified as a significant factor in intercellular communication in different disease treatments, including osteoarthritis (OA). Compared to the conventional approaches in treating OA, EV therapy is a non-invasive and cell-free method. However, improving the yield of EVs and their therapeutic effects are the main challenges for clinical applications. In this regard, researchers are using the EV engineering potential to overcome these challenges. New findings suggest that the co-culture strategy as an indirect EV engineering method efficiently increases EV production and quality. The co-culture of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) and chondrocytes has improved their chondrogenesis, anti-inflammatory effects, and regenerative properties which are mediated by EVs. Hence, co-culture engineering by considerable systems could be useful in producing engineered EVs for different therapeutic applications. Here, we review various co-culture approaches, including diverse direct and indirect, 2D and 3D cell cultures, as well as static and dynamic systems. Meanwhile, we suggest and discuss the advantages of combined strategies to achieve engineered EVs for OA treatment.

Background: People with multiple sclerosis (MS) and their physicians recognize cognitive retention as an important desired outcome of disease-modifying therapies (DMTs). In this study, we attempted to gather the opinions of Iranian MS experts regarding the treatment approach toward clinical cases with different physical and cognitive conditions. Methods: Opinions of 20 MS specialists regarding the best approach to 6 case scenarios (with different clinical, cognitive, and imaging characteristics) were gathered via a form. Results: The estimated kappa of 0.16 [95% confidence interval (CI): 0.159-0.163; P < 0.001] suggested a poor degree of agreement on the treatment choice among the professionals. Conclusion: Although most specialists agreed with treatment escalation in cases with cognitive impairment, there was no general agreement. Furthermore, there was not enough clinical evidence in the literature to develop consensus guidelines on the matter.

Background: Data on perioperative risk stratification in patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) are limited. In this regard, the present study was conducted to investigate Iranian specialists' approach to surgical counseling for patients with MS (PwMS). Methods: 21 MS specialists were asked about 11 case scenarios with different MS disease statuses, disease-modifying therapies (DMTs), and urgency of the operation. The reasons for refusing surgery or factors that have to be considered before surgery were studied. Results: Overall, Fleiss Kappa was estimated to be 0.091 [95% confidence interval (CI): 0.090-0.093, P < 0.001] indicating a very poor level of agreement among responders. Conclusion: PwMS face surgery for various reasons. Risk assessment of surgery, the effect of various drugs such as anesthetics and DMT on patients, as well as many other aspects of MS are issues challenging the practitioners. Clarifying the various dimensions of these issues requires further research.

OBJECTIVE: This study was performed to systematically review the current literature on the effects of transcutaneous tibial nerve stimulation and percutaneous tibial nerve stimulation on multiple sclerosis-induced neurogenic lower urinary tract dysfunction. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Medical databases including PubMed, Scopus, Embase, and Web of Science were systematically searched from inception to September 2022. Metaanalysis was carried out using the comprehensive meta-analysis tool. RESULTS: Our inclusion criteria were met by 12 studies evaluating the effects of percutaneous tibial nerve stimulation/transcutaneous tibial nerve stimulation on multiple sclerosis-induced neurogenic lower urinary tract dysfunction. Comparing the postintervention results to the baseline showed that the rate of frequency was decreased in both percutaneous tibial nerve stimulation and transcutaneous tibial nerve stimulation groups after intervention. The overall mean change of tibial nerve stimulation on frequency was -2.623 (95% CI: -3.58, -1.66; P < .001, I 2 : 87.04) among 6 eligible studies. The post-void residual was decreased after treatment in both methods of tibial nerve stimulation, with an overall mean difference of -31.13 mL (95% CI: -50.62, -11.63; P=.002, I 2 : 71.81). The other urinary parameters, including urgency (mean difference: -4.69; 95% CI: -7.64, -1.74; P < .001, I 2 : 92.16), maximum cystometric capacity (mean difference: 70.95; 95% CI: 44.69, 97.21; P < .001, I 2 : 89.04), and nocturia (mean difference: -1.41; 95% CI: -2.22, 0.60; P < .001, I 2 : 95.15), were improved after intervention, too. However, the results of subgroup analysis showed no effect of transcutaneous tibial nerve stimulation on urinary incontinence (mean difference: -2.00; 95% CI: -4.06, 0.06; P=.057, I 2 : 95.22) and nocturia (mean difference: -0.39; 95% CI: -1.15, 0.37; P=.315, I 2 : 84.01). In terms of mean voided volume, the evidence was related to only percutaneous tibial nerve stimulation with a mean change of 75.01 mL (95% CI: -39.40, 110.61; P < .001, I 2 : 85.04). CONCLUSION: Although the current literature suggests that tibial nerve electrostimulation might be an effective method for treating neurogenic lower urinary tract dysfunction, the evidence base is poor and derived from small, mostly nonrandomized trials with a high risk of bias and confounding.

Background: Neuromyelitis Optica (NMO) is a serious condition associated with inflammation. Early diagnosis and detection are critical for early intervention. In this systematic review, we investigate the role of the neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR) as an important biomarker for NMO. Methods: Ten studies were selected that were sufficiently high quality and then checked for quality. The studies were organized by English language and selective inclusion criteria. Results: NLR was significantly increased in NMO patients compared to controls. The ratio was specifically proportional to severity of disease. More severe disease had a higher ratio. Conclusion: NLR offers a reliable and affordable method for early detection of disease severity. This can help guide appropriate treatment selection and monitor treatment response.

BACKGROUND: The goal of this research was to explore the role of Neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR) in Parkinson's disease (PD). METHODS: From inception to 4 June 2023, PubMed, Web of Science, and ProQuest were searched for papers comparing NLR in PD to healthy individuals. Standardized mean difference (SMD) with a confidence interval (CI) of 95% were calculated. RESULTS: A random-effect model revealed that PD patients had elevated NLR values compared to healthy individuals (SMD = 0.81, 95% CI = 0.47 to 1.14, P < 0.001). The results of subgroup analysis were as follows: (1) study design: We observed that patients with PD had higher levels of NLR than healthy controls in either retrospective (SMD = 1.12, 95% CI = 0.58 to 1.66, P < 0.001) or prospective (SMD = 0.43, 95% CI = 0.18 to 0.68, P = 0.001) studies. (2) Ethnicity: We noticed that individuals with PD had higher levels of NLR than healthy controls, whether they were East Asian (SMD = 0.93, 95% CI = 0.22 to 1.63, P = 0.010) or Caucasian (SMD = 0.75, 95% CI = 0.40 to 1.10, P < 0.001).The pooled sensitivity of NLR in the prediction of PD was 0.67 (95% CI = 0.61-0.73), and the pooled specificity was 0.66 (95% CI, 0.61-0.70). CONCLUSIONS: Increased levels of NLR is highly related with the presence of PD. Further research is needed to determine the potential clinical benefits of this simple and low-cost biomarker in the PD diagnosis.

Backgrounds and Aims: Patients with multiple sclerosis (pwMS) need self-management (SM) skills to manage their symptoms and problems. An essential step to SM improvement is accurate SM assessment using valid and reliable instruments. The aim of this study was to evaluate the psychometric properties of the Persian version of the Multiple Sclerosis Self-Management Scale-Revised (MSSMS-R). Methods: This cross-sectional methodological study was conducted from December 2021 to June 2022. The face, content, and construct validity of MSSMS-R were evaluated. Construct validity was evaluated through confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) and evaluating convergent and discriminant validity using the data obtained from 210 randomly selected MS patients. The reliability of the scale was also evaluated through the test-retest stability and the internal consistency evaluation methods. Results: The face validity was confirmed and the content validity ratio and index values of all items were more than 0.62 and 0.79, respectively. CFA revealed the acceptable construct validity of the scale after omitting items 21 and 22. In convergent and discriminant validity evaluation, the total score of MSSMS-R had significant positive correlation with the total mean scores of the Multiple Sclerosis Self-Efficacy Scale (r = 0.36; p < 0.001) and the physical health composite (r = 0.31; p < 0.001) and the mental health composite (r = 0.39; p < 0.001) dimensions of the 54-item Multiple Sclerosis Quality of Life scale and significant inverse correlation with the total mean score of the Beck Depression Inventory (r = -0.28; p < 0.001). The Cronbach's alpha values of the scale and its subscales were 0.86 and 0.65-0.90 and their test-retest intraclass correlation coefficients were 0.97 and 0.95-0.99, respectively. Conclusion: The Persian MSSMS-R is a valid and reliable scale and can be used in future studies for SM assessment among pwMS.

Extracellular vesicles (EVs) may have a key therapeutic role and offer an innovative treatment for osteoarthritis (OA). Studies have shown that ratio of MSC/chondrocyte could affect their therapeutic outcomes. Here, we investigate the chondrogenic potential and therapeutic effect of EVs derived from MSCs and chondrocytes in the naïve, chondrogenically primed, and co-culture states to treat OA. EVs are isolated from naïve MSCs (M-EV), chondrogenically primed MSCs (cpM-EV), chondrocytes (C-EV), and co-cultures of chondrocytes plus MSCs at ratios of 1:1 (C/M-EV), 2:1 (2C/M-EV), and 4:1 (4C/M-EV). We characterized the isolated EVs in terms of surface markers, morphology, size, and zeta potential, and evaluated their chondrogenic potential in vitro by qRT-PCR and histological analyses. Next, these EVs were intra-articularly injected into osteoarthritic cartilage of a rat model and assessed by radiography, gait parameters, and histological and immunohistochemical analyses. EVs obtained from chondrocytes co-cultured with MSCs resulted in improved matrix production and functional differentiation. Our research showed that close proximity between the two cell types was essential for this response, and improved chondrogenesis and matrix formation were the outcomes of this interaction in vitro. Furthermore, in the in vivo rat OA model induced by a monoiodoacetate (MIA), we observed recovery from OA by increasing ratio of the C/M-derived EV group compared to the other groups. Our findings show that the increasing chondrocyte ratio to MSC leads to high chondrogenic induction and the therapeutic effect of harvested EVs for cartilage repair.

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a progressive inflammatory neurodegenerative disease of the nervous system accompanied by demyelination. MS-associated cognitive impairments mainly involve recent memory, information processing speed, stable memory, and executive function. Moreover, MS is associated with impaired glucose and insulin metabolism, which can exacerbate cognitive decline. The present study aimed to compare the cognitive status of MS patients with and without insulin resistance. In this cross-sectional study, 74 relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis diagnosed patients were enrolled. Indicators of insulin resistance, including fasting blood glucose, insulin level, and homeostatic model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) index, were measured. They were then divided into two groups based on the results of the HOMA-IR index. Cognition status was evaluated by the minimal assessment of cognitive function in multiple sclerosis battery. The prevalence of insulin resistance was 37.8%, and the prevalence of cognitive decline was estimated to be 67.56%. Mean scores of the California verbal learning test (CVLT), CVLT delayed free recall, controlled oral word association test, and judgment of line orientation tests were significantly lower in MS patients with insulin resistance than without. In addition, a negative correlation was demonstrated between the results of the CVLT, CVLT delayed free recall, controlled oral word association test, judgment of line orientation tests, brief visuospatial memory test, and Delis-Kaplan executive function system sorting tests and fasting insulin levels. Greater verbal memory and spatial comprehension impairments were observed in MS patients with insulin resistance.

BACKGROUND: Today, it is estimated that around 5% of multiple sclerosis (MS) patients are in the late-onset category (age at disease onset ≥ 50). Diagnosis and treatment in this group could be challenging. Here, we report the latest update on the characteristics of Iranian patients with late-onset MS (LOMS). METHODS: This cross-sectional study used the information provided by the nationwide MS registry of Iran (NMSRI). The registrars from 14 provinces entered data of patients with a confirmed diagnosis of MS by neurologists. Patients with disease onset at or later than 50 years of age were considered LOMS. RESULTS: Of 20,036 records, the late-onset category included 321 patients (1.6%). The age-standardized LOMS prevalence was around 75 per 100,000 people. 215 patients (67%) were female. Median Expanded Disability Status Scale (EDSS) was 3 (interquartile range: 1.5-5). The majority of the cases (56%) suffered from relapsing-remitting (RR) course while 20% were diagnosed with primary progressive (PP) MS. Significantly higher proportion of male sex, PPMS, and higher EDSS were seen in the late-onset group compared with early-onset and adult-onset cases (p-value < 0.05). Seventy-five (23%) patients did not receive any disease-modifying treatment. DISCUSSION: The more prominent degenerative pathology of LOMS may be the underlying mechanism of the observed differences in comparison to non-LOMS. CONCLUSION: There are substantial differences and knowledge gaps regarding LOMS which could be the subject of further research.

Stem cells are valuable tools in regenerative medicine because they can generate a wide variety of cell types and tissues that can be used to treat or replace damaged tissues and organs. However, challenges related to the application of stem cells in the scope of regenerative medicine have urged scientists to utilize nanomedicine as a prerequisite to circumvent some of these hurdles. Nanomedicine plays a crucial role in this process and manipulates surface biology, the fate of stem cells, and biomaterials. Many attempts have been made to modify cellular behavior and improve their regenerative ability using nano-based strategies. Notably, nanotechnology applications in regenerative medicine and cellular therapies are controversial because of ethical and legal considerations. Therefore, this review describes nanotechnology in cell-based applications and focuses on newly proposed nano-based approaches. Cutting-edge strategies to engineer biological tissues and the ethical, legal, and social considerations of nanotechnology in regenerative nanomedicine applications are also discussed.

BACKGROUND: Efficient differentiation of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) into a desired cell lineage remains challenging in cell-based therapy and regenerative medicine. Numerous efforts have been made to efficiently promote differentiation of MSCs into osteoblast lineage. Accordingly, epigenetic signatures emerge as a key conductor of cell differentiation. Among them, Enhancer of Zeste Homolog 2 (EZH2), a histone methyltransferase appears to suppress osteogenesis. Curcumin is an osteoinductive natural polyphenol compound which supposedly modulates epigenetic mechanisms. Hence, the current study aims to address the role of the EZH2 epigenetic factor in osteogenic activity of MSCs after Curcumin treatment. METHODS: The effect of Curcumin on viability and osteogenic differentiation was evaluated at different time points in vitro. The expression level of EZH2 was assessed using quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) after 14 and 21 days. RESULTS: MTT results showed no cytotoxic effects at concentrations of 10 and 15 µM of Curcumin and cells survived up to 70 % at all time-points. qRT-PCR results demonstrated that Curcumin significantly enhanced the expression levels of osteogenic markers that included Runx2, Osterix, Collagen type I, Osteopontin and Osteocalcin at day 21. CONCLUSIONS: Interestingly, we observed that the expression level of the EZH2 gene was downregulated in the presence of Curcumin compared to the control group during osteogenesis. This study confirmed that Curcumin acts as an epigenetic switch to regulate osteoblast differentiation specifically through the EZH2 suppression.

Extracellular vesicles (EVs) have therapeutic effects on osteoarthritis (OA). Some recent strategies could elevate EV's therapeutic properties including cell aggregation, co-culture, and 3D culture. It seems that a combination of these strategies could augment EV production and therapeutic potential. The current study aims to evaluate the quantity of EV yield and the therapeutic effect of EVs harvested from rabbit mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) aggregates, chondrocyte aggregates, and their co-aggregates in a dynamic 3D culture in a rat osteoarthritis model. MSC and chondrocytes were aggregated and co-aggregated by spinner flasks, and their conditioned medium was collected. EVs were isolated by size exclusion chromatography and characterized in terms of size, morphology and surface markers. The chondrogenic potential of the MSC-ag, Cho-ag and Co-ag EVs on MSC micromass differentiation in chondrogenic media were assessed by qRT-PCR, histological and immunohistochemical analysis. 50 µg of MSC-ag-EVs, Cho-ag-EVs and Co-ag-EVs was injected intra-articularly per knee of OA models established by monoiodoacetate in rats. After 8 weeks follow up, the knee joints were harvested and analyzed by radiographic, histological and immunohistochemical features. MSC/chondrocyte co-aggregation in comparison to MSC or chondrocyte aggregation could increase EV yield during dynamic 3D culture by spinner flasks. Although MSC-ag-, Cho-ag- and Co-ag-derived EVs could induce chondrogenesis similar to transforming growth factor-beta during in vitro study, Co-ag-EV could more effectively prevent OA progression than MSC-ag- and Cho-ag-EVs. Our study demonstrated that EVs harvested from the co-aggregation of MSCs and chondrocytes could be considered as a new therapeutic potential for OA treatment.

This meta-analysis was conducted to determine the relationship between neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and febrile seizure (FS). Our study was registered with the PROSPERO (ID: CRD42021259944). Web of Science, Embase, PubMed, Scopus, and ProQuest Central were searched, and finally, 17 studies were included. Standardized mean difference (SMD) was reported with a 95% confidence interval (CI) for the NLR levels. Compared with the febrile control group, the FS patients' NLR levels were significantly higher (SMD = 0.49; 95%CI = 0.26 to 0.72, P < 0.001). Furthermore, we conducted a comparison of NLR levels between febrile controls against simple and complex FS cases separately and found that NLR levels of children with either simple or complex FS were higher compared with those of febrile controls (SMD = 0.42, 95%CI = 0.14 to 0.69, P = 0.003 and SMD = 0.90, 95%CI = 0.71 to 1.09, P < 0.001, respectively). Also, in comparison with the NLR levels of the simple FS group, the complex FS patients' NLR levels were significantly higher (SMD = 0.59, 95%CI = 0.34 to 0.85, P < 0.001). Our study indicated that NLR could be recommended as an inexpensive diagnostic biomarker for FS. In addition, it can be useful when distinguishing between simple FS and complex FS.

Biopolymer-based injectable hydrogels provide great potential as bone tissue engineering (BTE) scaffolds on account of biocompatibility, and pore interconnectivity that enables delivery of cells and/or signaling molecules for bone repair. Recently, Gelatin hydrogels based on H-bonds were considered in response to concerns around the chemical crosslinking agents. In this study, a self-healing gelatin hydrogel with remarkable compressive and self-healing properties was prepared via formation of quadruple hydrogen bonds between ureidopyrimidinon functional groups, which were substituted on NH2 groups of gelatin(GelUPy). Degree of substitution controls properties of the resulting hydrogel from a shape- memory hydrogel (100% substitution), to a hydrogel (about 80%), to this self-healing hydrogel (about 40%). We report a strategy that adopts an emulsion synthesis approach to delivery of dexamethasone and Ca/Zn ions from injectable self-healing GelUPy hydrogel (GelUPy-ZnHApUPy-DEX), to induce osteogenic differentiation of adipose-derived stem cells, in vitro, and enhance bone regeneration in a cranial bone defect in a rat model. We show that key properties of the composite hydrogels, including mechanical properties, and release behavior of DEX are a match to the requirements of BTE. Overall, our results demonstrate that this self-healing gelatin approach is a promising strategy to enhance bone regeneration through a minimally invasive procedure.

This study was conducted to summarize the results of studies investigating the role of neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR) in epilepsy. The search was conducted on PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science up to December 25, 2021. Finally, a total of seven studies were included in the review. The NLR in patients who were in the acute phase was higher than that of healthy. NLR in the patients who were in either acute or subacute phase was higher than in healthy controls. A significant difference in NLR levels between the acute and subacute phases was also noted. Epilepsy is one of the most important neurological diseases in the world, and millions of people around the world suffer from it, and a cheap and fast biomarker is needed for it. The interesting thing is that inflammation plays a role in epilepsy, and elevated NLR value can be a good biomarker of inflammation and, as a result, for epilepsy.

In this study, we conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis regarding the role of the neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR) in Guillain Barré syndrome (GBS). The most recent update to the search was on July 18, 2022, through the databases of Web of Science, PubMed, Embase, and Scopus. The Newcastle-Ottawa scale was used for quality assessment of included studies. Finally, 14 studies were included in the review, and among them, ten studies were included in the meta-analysis. Our results showed that NLR levels were significantly increased in the patients with GBS compared with healthy controls (SMD = 1.05; 95%CI = 0.59 to 1.50, P < 0.001). After treatment, NLR levels were decreased to the extent that they became similar to healthy controls (SMD = -0.03, 95%CI = -0.29 to 0.22, P = 0.204). Moreover, NLR was a stable predictor of outcome or response to treatment in such patients (SMD = 1.01, 95%CI = 0.65 to 1.37, P < 0.001); the higher the NLR, the worse the outcome. In addition, patients who underwent mechanical ventilation had higher levels of NLR compared to those who did not (SMD = 0.93, 95%CI = 0.05 to 1.82, P = 0.03). However, NLR levels were not different among distinct GBS subtypes, so it could not distinguish among them. In conclusion, our analysis indicates that the NLR levels are highly elevated in patients with GBS. Therefore, the NLR has the potential to be used as a biomarker to inform diagnosis, prognosis, or treatment responses in GBS, and future studies are warranted.
