RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has various sequelae, one of which might be hypertension. We aimed to evaluate COVID-19's impact on blood pressure (BP) in non-hospitalized patients at one-year follow-up. METHOD: A total of 7,950 consecutive COVID-19 patients regularly visiting our cardiology clinic were retrospectively screened. Patients' electronic medical records including demographics, comorbidities, vital signs, treatments, and outcomes, were reviewed by two physicians. Individuals with at least one BP measurement in the three months preceding COVID-19 and one measurement in 12 months or more following recovery were included. BP levels before and after COVID-19 were compared using the paired t-test. RESULTS: 5,355 confirmed COVID-19 patients (mean age 55.51 ± 15.38 years) were included. Hypertension (56.9%) and diabetes mellitus (34%) were the predominant comorbidities, and 44.3% had prior major adverse cardiovascular events. Both systolic (126.90 ± 20.91 vs. 139.99 ± 23.94 mmHg, P < 0.001) and diastolic BP (80.54 ± 13.94 vs. 86.49 ± 14.40 mmHg, P < 0.001) were significantly higher post-COVID-19 vs. pre-COVID-19. Notably, 456 (14%) hypertensive patients experienced exacerbated hypertension, while 408 (17%) patients developed new-onset hypertension, overall 864 (16%) of patients had exacerbation or new hypertension. Linear regression analysis revealed that advanced age, smoking, previous cardiovascular events, hypertension, and diabetes mellitus predict increased BP following COVID-19 (P < 0.001). CONCLUSION: COVID-19 raised systolic and diastolic BP in the long term in non-hospitalized patients, with over one-sixth developing new-onset or exacerbated hypertension. All patients should be evaluated regarding BP, following COVID-19 recovery, particularly those with the mentioned predictive factors. (clinicaltrial.gov: NCT05798208).

RESUMO

Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), accounting for more than 80% of all cases, is the predominant form of lung cancer and the leading cause of cancer-related deaths worldwide. Significant progress has been made in diagnostic techniques, surgical interventions, chemotherapy protocols, and targeted therapies at the molecular level, leading to enhanced treatment outcomes in patients with NSCLC. Extensive evidence supports the use of circular RNAs (circRNAs), a specific category of naturally occurring non-coding small RNAs (ncRNAs), for the diagnosis, monitoring of treatment efficacy, and assessment of survival in NSCLC. CircRNAs have been identified to play significant roles in various aspects of cancer formation, either as tumor suppressors or tumor promoters, contributing to cancer development through several signaling pathways, including the phosphoinositide 3-kinases (PI3Ks) pathway. This pathway is well-established because of its regulatory role in essential cellular processes. CircRNAs regulate the PI3K/AKT pathway by targeting diverse cellular elements. This review aims to provide insight into the involvement of several circRNAs linked to the PI3K/AKT pathway in NSCLC.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to compare anthropometric indices to predict type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) among first-degree relatives of diabetic patients in the Iranian community. METHODS: In this study, information on 3483 first-degree relatives (FDRs) of diabetic patients was extracted from the database of the Endocrinology and Metabolism Research Center of Isfahan University of Medical Sciences. Overall, 2082 FDRs were included in the analyses. A logistic regression model was used to evaluate the association between anthropometric indices and the odds of having diabetes. Furthermore, a receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve was applied to estimate the optimal cutoff point based on the sensitivity and specificity of each index. In addition, the indices were compared based on the area under the curve (AUC). RESULTS: The overall prevalence of diabetes was 15.3%. The optimal cutoff points for anthropometric measures among men were 25.09 for body mass index (BMI) (AUC = 0.573), 0.52 for waist-to-height ratio (WHtR) (AUC = 0.648), 0.91 for waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) (AUC = 0.654), 0.08 for a body shape index (ABSI) (AUC = 0.599), 3.92 for body roundness index (BRI) (AUC = 0.648), 27.27 for body adiposity index (BAI) (AUC = 0.590), and 8 for visceral adiposity index (VAI) (AUC = 0.596). The optimal cutoff points for anthropometric indices were 28.75 for BMI (AUC = 0.610), 0.55 for the WHtR (AUC = 0.685), 0.80 for the WHR (AUC = 0.687), 0.07 for the ABSI (AUC = 0.669), 4.34 for the BRI (AUC = 0.685), 39.95 for the BAI (AUC = 0.583), and 6.15 for the VAI (AUC = 0.658). The WHR, WHTR, and BRI were revealed to have fair AUC values and were relatively greater than the other indices for both men and women. Furthermore, in women, the ABSI and VAI also had fair AUCs. However, BMI and the BAI had the lowest AUC values among the indices in both sexes. CONCLUSION: The WHtR, BRI, VAI, and WHR outperformed other anthropometric indices in predicting T2DM in first-degree relatives (FDRs) of diabetic patients. However, further investigations in different populations may need to be implemented to justify their widespread adoption in clinical practice.

RESUMO

Introduction: Takotsubo cardiomyopathy (TCM) features transient left ventricular apical dysfunction or ballooning. The underlying mechanism remains elusive; however, evidence suggests the role of different physical and psychological stressors. We systematically reviewed patients presenting with TCM and autoimmunity to explore the link between the two conditions. Methods: We applied the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses extension for Scoping Reviews (PRISMA-ScR) to report this review. Using keywords related to autoimmune/immune-mediated diseases and TCM, we searched PubMed, Scopus, and WOS in March 2022. The final results were added to a data extraction sheet. Data were analyzed by SPSS version 26.0. Results: Our search yielded 121 studies, including 155 patients. Females were considerably predominant. Most patients had a history of autoimmune disease, and almost a third had a history of cardiovascular disease. Dyspnea and chest pain were the most common chief complaints. More than 70% of patients had experienced physical stress. Myasthenia gravis, systemic lupus erythematosus, and multiple sclerosis were the most frequently reported autoimmune diseases. Conclusion: There were similarities in age and sex compared to classic TCM. TCM should be considered as a differential diagnosis for ACS, especially in patients with a positive background of autoimmunity. A precise reporting system is required for further studies.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The stigma toward epilepsy is a daily challenge for people with epilepsy (PWE) and can influence the well-being and prognosis of these individuals. However, the cultural origins of such stigma have sparsely been examined. In this study, we aimed to investigate the classic Persian literature to gain insight into the historical and cultural beliefs and opinions regarding epilepsy as a determinant in developing stigma towards PWE. METHODS: In this narrative review of the classic Persian literature, we investigated the opinions and beliefs regarding epilepsy and PWE. In February 2023, we searched https://ganjoor.net (an open-access database of Iranian literature) for the relevant literary materials (poem and prose) using the Persian translation of the terms epilepsy (Sar'e) and epileptic (Masroo'e). Two clinical researchers went through the results and extracted the related materials under the supervision of two experts in Persian literature. A bilingual academic translated the included literary materials from Persian to English. RESULTS: Our search yielded 57 literature materials by 31 poets and writers from the 4th to 14th Hijri centuries, roughly coinciding with the past Gregorian millennium (1000-2000 AC). We classified the literary concepts related to epilepsy stigma into five subgroups: (i) a simile for pain and suffering; (ii) an atonement for blasphemous beliefs or a disease caused by supernatural power; (iii) a sign of madness, insanity, and lack of wisdom; (iv) a celestial observation; and (v) a subject for jokes. CONCLUSIONS: Classic Persian literature considered epilepsy as a simile for suffering and a sign of insanity that is caused by blasphemous beliefs or celestial objects, with PWE classified as insane and unwise. While such depictions became less prevalent after the 14th century CE, they can give rise to misconceptions and negative stigma toward PWE and should be addressed in modern culture. Each society should critically investigate its socio-cultural origins of stigma and rectify such misbeliefs.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Engaging in physical activity could help improve the quality of life in patients with Alzheimer's disease. The objective of this study was to determine the association between the levels of physical activity and lifestyle, life expectancy, and quality of life in patients with Alzheimer's disease in Iran and Italy. METHODS: A total of 165 participants from Iran and Italy were enrolled in this cross-sectional study. In Iran, 85 patients participated in the study. In Italy, we enrolled 80 patients at the Sapienza University teaching hospital, Policlinico Umberto 1 in Rome. The inclusion criteria in this study include patients over 60 years old, non-smokers, and non-users of antidepressants and hypnotics. RESULTS: The results of Tukey's post hoc test of the study conducted in Iran showed that the lifestyle of patients with moderate (p = 0.001) and low (p = 0.009) physical activity levels was significantly better than inactive patients. Life expectancy in patients with moderate physical activity levels was significantly higher than inactive patients (p = 0.011). The quality of life was significantly better in patients with moderate (p = 0.001) and low (p = 0.002) physical activity levels than inactive patients. On the other hand, the findings of Tukey's post hoc test of the study in Italy showed that the quality of life in patients with low (p = 0.001) and moderate physical activity levels (p = 0.01) was significantly higher than inactive patients. CONCLUSIONS: A low to moderate level of physical activity could be associated with an improved lifestyle, life expectancy, and quality of life in patients with Alzheimer's disease compared to inactivity.

RESUMO

Objective: Appropriate functional vision is vital for the development of visually impaired (VI) children. However, the literature currently lacks a performance-based tool for assessing functional vision, unlike the existing self-reported tools. The objective of this study is to develop and conduct a clinimetric study on a Performance-Based Functional Vision Tool (PB-FVT) specifically designed for VI children aged 3-7 and 7-10 years old. Methods: This methodological study was conducted to assess the clinimetric properties of the PB-FVT. The assessment included face validity (evaluated through cognitive interviews and an Impact Score >1.5), content validity (with criteria including content validity ratio >0.63, item content validity index >0.78, scale content validity index or average >0.8, and Kappa value >0.7), criterion validity (assessed through a concurrent test using visual acuity scores), construct validity (utilizing the known group method), relative reliability (measured by the intra-class correlation coefficient), absolute reliability (determined by the standard error of measurement and minimal detectable changes), interpretability, responsiveness, sensitivity, and specificity (analyzed via ROC curve analysis). Results: The PB-FVT was developed with 32 items, divided into five components: activities of daily living, instrumental activities of daily living, education, play, and social interaction. The results indicate that the scale demonstrates suitability in terms of validity, reliability, and other measurement characteristics. Conclusions: The valid and reliable PB-FVT may accurately assess the level of functional vision during early childhood, helping to prevent negative impacts on a child's overall development. By utilizing the PB-FVT, any functional vision impairments can be identified appropriately, enabling the planning and implementation of effective rehabilitation interventions.

RESUMO

Literature showed that soluble fiber has beneficial effects on cardiometabolic risk factors and leptin and adiponectin serum levels. Our aim in this meta-analysis was to determine the effect of soluble fiber supplementation on leptin and adiponectin serum levels. A systematic search was conducted using PubMed, Scopus, and ISI Web of Science for eligible trials up to December 2021. A random-effects model was used to pool calculated effect sizes. Our analysis showed that soluble fiber supplementation did not significantly affect adiponectin (standardized mean difference [SMD], -0.49 Hedges's, 95% confidence interval [CI], -1.20, 0.21, p value = 0.167; I2 = 95.4, p value < 0.001) and leptin (SMD, -0.8 Hedges's, 95% CI, -1.70, 0.08, p value = 0.076; I2 = 94.6, p value < 0.001) concentrations in comparison with placebo. However, in the subgroup, soluble fiber supplementation had a significant improvement in leptin concentration in overweight and obese patients (SMD, -0.22 Hedges's, 95% CI, -0.43, -0.01, p value = 0.048) and a non-significant beneficial effect in adiponectin level in female (SMD, 0.29 Hedges's, 95% CI, -0.13, 0.71, p value = 0.183) and diabetic patients (SMD, 0.32 Hedges's, 95% CI, -0.67, 1.32, p value = 0.526). A non-linear association between soluble fiber dosage and adiponectin (pnon-linearity < 0.001) was observed. Soluble fiber supplementation could not change the circulatory leptin and adiponectin levels. However, beneficial effects were seen in overweight and obese leptin, and increases in adiponectin may also be observed in female and diabetic patients. Further studies are needed to confirm this results.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Mesenchymal stromal cell (MSC) transplantation can improve the left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) after an acute myocardial infarction (AMI). Transplanted MSCs exert a paracrine effect, which might be augmented if repeated doses are administered. This study aimed to compare the effects of single versus double transplantation of Wharton's jelly MSCs (WJ-MSCs) on LVEF post-AMI. METHODS: We conducted a single-blind, randomized, multicenter trial. After 3-7 days of an AMI treated successfully by primary PCI, 70 patients younger than 65 with LVEF < 40% on baseline echocardiography were randomized to receive conventional care, a single intracoronary infusion of WJ-MSCs, or a repeated infusion 10 days later. The primary endpoint was the 6-month LVEF improvement as per cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) imaging. RESULTS: The mean baseline EF measured by CMR was similar (~ 40%) in all three groups. By the end of the trial, while all patients experienced a rise in EF, the most significant change was seen in the repeated intervention group. Compared to the control group (n = 25), single MSC transplantation (n = 20) improved the EF by 4.54 ± 2%, and repeated intervention (n = 20) did so by 7.45 ± 2% when measured by CMR imaging (P < 0.001); when evaluated by echocardiography, these values were 6.71 ± 2.4 and 10.71 ± 2.5%, respectively (P < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: Intracoronary transplantation of WJ-MSCs 3-7 days after AMI in selected patients significantly improves LVEF, with the infusion of a booster dose 10 days later augmenting this effect. RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: Thiopurine prodrugs are commonly used in kidney transplant recipients. Inosine triphosphate pyrophosphatase is an enzyme encoded by the ITPA gene. Alteration of ITPA gene is one of the pharmacogenetic sequence variants possibly involved in thiopurine metabolism. The ITPA 94C>A sequence variant (C-to-A substitution at nucleotide 94) is associated with an increased risk of adverse drug reactions in patients treated with the thiopurine drug. The aim of the present study was to investigate the effect of the ITPA 94C>A gene sequence variant in kidney transplant recipients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The genotyping of the ITPA rs1127354 variant was performed by the polymerase chain reaction restriction fragment length polymorphism method in 140 kidney transplant recipients and in 100 control participants. Data were analyzed with SPSS statistical software. RESULTS: The results revealed a significant difference between control and nonrejection groups regarding the rs1127354 genotype and allele frequency. No significant difference was found between the rejection and nonrejection groups regarding the rs1127354 genotype and allele frequency. Also, a significant association was observed between the ageofthe control group and age of the rejection group. No significant differences between sex and underlying disease in patients with or without rejection were observed. CONCLUSIONS: We observed no significant differences between rejection and nonrejection transplant. Further studies are recommended, in a larger population and with different ethnicities.

RESUMO

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is one of the deadliest cancers due to multifocal development and distant metastasis resulting from late diagnosis. Consequently, new approaches to HCC diagnosis and treatment are required to reduce mortality rates. A large body of evidence suggests that non-coding RNAs (ncRNAs) are important in cancer initiation and progression. Cancer cells release many of these ncRNAs into the blood or urine, enabling their use as a diagnostic tool. Circular RNAs (CircRNAs) are as a members of the ncRNAs that regulate cancer cell expansion, migration, metastasis, and chemoresistance through different mechanisms such as the Wnt/ß-catenin Signaling pathway. The Wnt/ß-catenin pathway plays prominent roles in several biological processes including organogenesis, stem cell regeneration, and cell survival. Aberrant signaling of both pathways mentioned above could affect the progression and metastasis of many cancers, including HCC. Based on several studies investigated in the current review, circRNAs have an effect on HCC formation and progression by sponging miRNAs and RNA-binding proteins (RBPs) and regulating the Wnt/ß-catenin signaling pathway. Therefore, circRNAs/miRNAs or RBPs/Wnt/ß-catenin signaling pathway could be considered promising prognostic and therapeutic targets in HCC.

RESUMO

Dyslipidemia is an imbalance of various lipids, and propolis, as a natural resinous viscos mixture made by Apis mellifera L. could improve in this condition. In this single-blind, randomized trial, 60 women with type 2 diabetes and dyslipidemia were divided into four groups: (1) the patients who did not apply the combined training and 500 mg propolis capsules supplement (Control group); (2) subjects performed combined training, including aerobic and resistance training (EXR); (3) subjects received the 500 mg propolis supplement capsules (SUPP); (4) Subjects performed combined training along with receiving the 500 mg propolis supplement capsules (EXR + SUPP). We evaluated the concentration of CTRP12, SFRP5, interleukin-6 (IL6), superoxide dismutase (SOD), malondialdehyde (MDA), adiponectin, and total antioxidant capacity (TAC) before and after the intervention. MDA, TAC, IL6, CTRP12, SFRP5 IL6, adiponectin, and lipid profile levels ameliorated in the EXR + SUPP group. We found that 8 weeks of treatment by combined exercise training and propolis supplement decreased inflammation activity and increased antioxidant defense in women with diabetic dyslipidemia.Trial registration This study was registered in the Iranian Registry of Clinical Trials; IRCT code: IRCT20211229053561N1.

RESUMO

Leukaemia is a dangerous malignancy that causes thousands of deaths every year throughout the world. The rate of morbidity and mortality is significant despite many advancements in therapy strategies for affected individuals. Most antitumour medications used now in clinical oncology use apoptotic signalling pathways to induce cancer cell death. Accumulated data have shown a direct correlation between inducing apoptosis in cancer cells with higher tumour regression and survival. Until now, the efficacy of melatonin as a powerful antitumour agent has been firmly established. A change in melatonin concentrations has been reported in multiple tumours such as endometrial, hematopoietic, and breast cancers. Findings show that melatonin's anticancer properties, such as its prooxidation function and ability to promote apoptosis, indicate the possibility of utilizing this natural substance as a promising agent in innovative cancer therapy approaches. Melatonin stimulates cell apoptosis via the regulation of many apoptosis facilitators, including mitochondria, cytochrome c, Bcl-2, production of reactive oxygen species, and apoptosis receptors. This paper aimed to further assess the anticancer effects of melatonin through the apoptotic pathway, considering the role that cellular apoptosis plays in the pathogenesis of cancer. The effect of melatonin may mean that it is appropriate for use as an adjuvant, along with other therapeutic approaches such as radiotherapy and chemotherapy.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The preparedness of nurses in the COVID-19 pandemic, will be of great importance when it comes to the unknown future of the pandemic and other similar ones. Identifying their problems can lead to better planning, preparation, and management. This study aims to explore Iranian nurses' experience of their preparedness challenges to give an effective response to the pandemic. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A qualitative content analysis approach using semi-structured interviews was employed to explore nurses' preparedness experiences. 28 nurses were interviewed, after transcription of the interviews, a content analysis using constant comparison was performed for data analysis based on Graneheim and Lundman approach. RESULTS: The results of the study can be summarized in 6 main categories and 14 subcategories, such as the necessity of continuing educational workshops, the necessity of holding exercises in the same environment, the importance of familiarity with the pandemic, the importance of educating all those involved in providing services in the pandemic, the need for providing immersive education for the pandemic and the need for planning and practice concerning the pandemic. CONCLUSION: When nurses receive more support, they can have their best performance. up-to-date training can prepare nurses more effectively, which will, in turn, make prepared nurses available, maximize their efficiency, and minimize their adverse mental consequences. Nurse managers may support nurses and increase hospital resilience in such emergencies. Nurses indicated some issues including managers' support, workplace culture, education, physical space, access to PPE, and willingness to provide the best care. These findings can be helpful in the management of the pandemic and preparing nurses as a large group of healthcare workers. Necessary training, along with the provision of adequate resources, should be programmed to support this effective group of health providers.

RESUMO

Background: Bariatric surgery is an appropriate treatment for obese patients with metabolic syndrome. Adipose tissue is an active endocrine tissue secreting leptin and adiponectin that affect body metabolism. Nowadays, a high incidence of metabolic syndrome with an increased risk of serious diseases has been detected in Shiraz. This study aimed to assess the levels of leptin and adiponectin as well as the adiponectin-to-leptin ratio in three different bariatric surgeries among obese patients in Shiraz. The results will play an important role in physicians' choice of surgery by distinguishing the effects of these three bariatric surgeries. Materials and Methods: The serum adiponectin and leptin levels were measured using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Blood glucose, lipid profile, weight, and liver enzyme level were measured before and 7 months after surgery. Results: This clinical trial was conducted on 81 obese patients who underwent sleeve gastrectomy (SG), Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB), and single anastomosis sleeve ileal (SASI) bypass surgeries. The results revealed a decrease in fasting blood sugar and triglyceride (TG) levels 7 months after the surgeries. In addition, decrease of body mass index (BMI) was more significantly in the SASI group (12.8 ± 3 4.95) compared to the Roux-en-Y gastric group (8.56 ± 4.61) (P = 0.026). Besides, a more significant improvement in liver function was observed in SG (P < 0.05). Furthermore, the results revealed a significant difference among the three groups regarding the increase in the adiponectin level (P = 0.039). Decrease in the leptin level and increase in the adiponectin level were more significant after the RYGB surgery compared to the SG group (P < 0.05). Conclusion: The three bariatric surgeries were effective in increasing the adiponectin level and decreasing the leptin levels. The surgeries also changed the metabolic risk factors including TGs, high-density lipoprotein, fasting blood glucose, and BMI.

RESUMO

Acne vulgaris is a common condition, mostly involving teenagers. Post-acne scarring can cause many psychosocial problems. Treatments include topical agents, chemical peels, ablative lasers, fractional lasers, and more invasive approaches like subcision and surgery. We aimed to build on data regarding the efficacy and safety of endo-radiofrequency subcision in treating acne scars. This trial involved 30 patients (26 females and 4 males) suffering from acne scars. Patients were treated with endo-radiofrequency subcision. Outcomes were measured by Goodman and Baron scores (GBA), Patient's Global Assessment (PGA), and Investigator's Global Assessment (IGA). All 30 patients completed the trial. The mean baseline quantitative Goodman and Baron score was 13.2 ± 4.31, which improved to 5.37 ± 2.83 by the end of the study (P < 0.001). A significant improvement was also noted in the Goodman and Baron qualitative assessment of acne scars (P < 0.001). According to the PGA, the improvement rate was 25-50% in most patients (60%), while according to the IGA, the improvement rate was 25-49% in most patients (50%). Eleven patients (36.7%) were satisfied with the treatment process, while the other 19 patients (63.3%) were very satisfied. Side effects were minimal and transient. A single session of endo-radiofrequency subcision is a fairly safe and effective treatment, with a high satisfaction rate among treated patients.

RESUMO

Objective: Functional Vision (FV) is vital for the successful growth of children with visual impairment. However, tasks related to measuring FV have not been thoroughly studied for this population. To address this gap, this study seeks to establish a comprehensive set of vision-related tasks that consider both the difficulty levels of activities and the ages of children with visual impairment. Methods: This study utilized a sequential multi-method design, including a scoping review, a qualitative content analysis, and a focus group. Firstly, a scoping review was conducted to identify vision-related tasks based on the literature. Then, to contextualize the vision-related tasks, a qualitative content analysis was carried out. Subsequently, a focus group was conducted to categorize the identified tasks based on their difficulty levels and the children's level of dependency. We utilized the directed content analysis method to analyze the data, using the occupational domain of the Occupational Therapy Practice Framework 4th edition (OTPF-4) as the primary framework. Results: During the review phase, which included 22 studies, and the interview phase, which involved 16 participants, a total of 95 and 85 vision-related tasks were identified, respectively. These tasks were then categorized into 17 activities and five occupations, which included activities of daily living (ADL), instrumental activities of daily living (IADL), education, play, and participation in social activities. Among these occupations, ADL was the easiest, while participation in social activities was the most challenging. Finally, the tasks were arranged based on their difficulty level for children with visual impairment. Conclusion: A comprehensive list of vision-related tasks has been developed based on the difficulty level of the tasks and the degree of dependency of children with visual impairment. This list can be used to develop standardized instruments for assessing FV in children with visual impairment.

RESUMO

One application of organic compounds is to utilize them as corrosion inhibitors in acidic environments to diminish steel corrosion. These inhibitors do not show very good inhibition properties in saline (NaCl) environments. There have been many studies on boosting these inhibitors' performance in such environments (especially Cl- containing media). One of the ways that have been proposed is the use of organic and inorganic inhibitors, simultaneously. The synergistic effect of these inhibitors has shown promising results in reducing steel corrosion. In this study, cerium(III) nitrate and tri-sodium phosphate (TSP) was used as organic and inorganic inhibitors to control the corrosion of steel in a 3.5 wt.% NaCl environment. The corrosion measurements were conducted in the 3.5 wt.% NaCl environment by EIS and polarization methods. Surface studies were done by SEM, Raman, GIXRD, and EDS methods. Corrosion studies (EIS and polarization) have revealed that when 500 ppm of Ce(NO3)3 and 500 ppm of TSP are added to the 3.5 wt.% NaCl medium, the highest synergism index (1.27) and inhibition efficiency (73.7%) are achieved. Also, by adding 500Ce-500TPS to the solution, icorr and Rct of steel decreased by about 80% and increased approximately 4-fold, respectively. This improvement in the steel performance against corrosion in the presence of an equal ratio of Ce(NO3)3 and TSP is the outcome of the formation of a hydrophobic dense film (consisting of Ce(OH)3, Ce/Fe-phosphate complexes) on the metal surface. This claim has been proven by SEM/EDS, contact angel, FT-IR, and XRD analysis.
