Microorganisms, especially rare microbial species, are crucial in estuarine ecosystems for driving biogeochemical processes and preserving biodiversity. However, the understanding of the links between ecosystem multifunctionality (EMF) and the diversity of rare bacterial taxa in estuary ecosystems remains limited. Employing high-throughput sequencing and a variety of statistical methods, we assessed the diversities and assembly process of abundant and rare bacterioplankton and their contributions to EMF in a subtropical estuary. Taxonomic analysis revealed Proteobacteria as the predominant phylum among both abundant and rare bacterial taxa. Notably, rare taxa demonstrated significantly higher taxonomic diversity and a larger species pool than abundant taxa. Additionally, our findings highlighted that deterministic assembly processes predominantly shape microbial communities, with heterogeneous selection exerting a stronger influence on rare taxa. Further analysis reveals that rare bacterial beta-diversity significantly impacts to EMF, whereas alpha diversity did not. The partial least squares path modeling (PLS-PM) analysis demonstrated that the beta diversity of abundant and rare taxa, as the main biotic factor, directly affected EMF, while temperature and total organic carbon (TOC) were additional key factors to determine the relationship between beta diversity and EMF. These findings advance our understanding of the distribution features and ecological knowledge of the abundant and rare taxa in EMF in subtropical estuaries, and provide a reference for exploring the multifunctionality of different biospheres in aquatic environments.

Vibrio is a salt-tolerant heterotrophic bacterium that occupies an important ecological niche in marine environments. However, little is known about the contribution of resource diversity to the marine Vibrio diversity and community stability. In this study, we investigated the association among resource diversity, taxonomic diversity, phylogenetic diversity, and community stability of marine Vibrio in the Beibu Gulf. V. campbellii and V. hangzhouensis were the dominant groups in seawater and sediments, respectively, in the Beibu Gulf. Higher alpha diversity was observed in the sediments than in the seawater. Marine Vibrio community assembly was dominated by deterministic processes. Pearson's correlation analysis showed that nitrite (NO2--N), dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN), ammonium (NH4+-N), and pH were the main factors affecting marine Vibrio community stability in the surface, middle, and bottom layers of seawater and sediment, respectively. Partial least-squares path models (PLS-PM) demonstrated that resource diversity, water properties, nutrients, and geographical distance had important impacts on phylogenetic and taxonomic diversity. Regression analysis revealed that the impact of resource diversity on marine Vibrio diversity and community stability varied across different habitats, but loss of Vibrio diversity increases community stability. Overall, this study provided insights into the mechanisms underlying the maintenance of Vibrio diversity and community stability in marine environments.

BACKGROUND: Cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs) are potential targets for cancer therapy. Due to the heterogeneity of CAFs, the influence of CAF subpopulations on the progression of lung cancer is still unclear, which impedes the translational advances in targeting CAFs. METHODS: We performed single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) on tumour, paired tumour-adjacent, and normal samples from 16 non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients. CAF subpopulations were analyzed after integration with published NSCLC scRNA-seq data. SpaTial enhanced resolution omics-sequencing (Stereo-seq) was applied in tumour and tumour-adjacent samples from seven NSCLC patients to map the architecture of major cell populations in tumour microenvironment (TME). Immunohistochemistry (IHC) and multiplexed IHC (mIHC) were used to validate marker gene expression and the association of CAFs with immune infiltration in TME. RESULTS: A subcluster of myofibroblastic CAFs, POSTN+ CAFs, were significantly enriched in advanced tumours and presented gene expression signatures related to extracellular matrix remodeling, tumour invasion pathways and immune suppression. Stereo-seq and mIHC demonstrated that POSTN+ CAFs were in close localization with SPP1+ macrophages and were associated with the exhausted phenotype and lower infiltration of T cells. POSTN expression or the abundance of POSTN+ CAFs were associated with poor prognosis of NSCLC. CONCLUSIONS: Our study identified a myofibroblastic CAF subpopulation, POSTN+ CAFs, which might associate with SPP1+ macrophages to promote the formation of desmoplastic architecture and participate in immune suppression. Furthermore, we showed that POSTN+ CAFs associated with cancer progression and poor clinical outcomes and may provide new insights on the treatment of NSCLC.

OBJECTIVE: Oxidative stress is associated with the occurrence and development of lung cancer. However, the specific association between lung cancer and oxidative stress is unclear. This study aimed to investigate the role of oxidative stress in the progression and prognosis of lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD). METHODS: The gene expression profiles and corresponding clinical information were collected from GEO and TCGA databases. Differentially expressed oxidative stress-related genes (OSRGs) were identified between normal and tumor samples. Consensus clustering was applied to identify oxidative stress-related molecular subgroups. Functional enrichment analysis, GSEA, and GSVA were performed to investigate the potential mechanisms. xCell was used to assess the immune status of the subgroups. A risk model was developed by the LASSO algorithm and validated using TCGA-LUAD, GSE13213, and GSE30219 datasets. RESULTS: A total of 40 differentially expressed OSRGs and two oxidative stress-associated subgroups were identified. Enrichment analysis revealed that cell cycle-, inflammation- and oxidative stress-related pathways varied significantly in the two subgroups. Furthermore, a risk model was developed and validated based on the OSRGs, and findings indicated that the risk model exhibits good prediction and diagnosis values for LUAD patients. CONCLUSION: The risk model based on the oxidative stress could act as an effective prognostic tool for LUAD patients. Our findings provided novel genetic biomarkers for prognosis prediction and personalized clinical treatment for LUAD patients.

BACKGROUND: Mediastinal neoplasms are typical thoracic diseases with increasing incidence in the general global population and can lead to poor prognosis. In clinical practice, the mediastinum's complex anatomic structures and intertype confusion among different mediastinal neoplasm pathologies severely hinder accurate diagnosis. To solve these difficulties, we organised a multicentre national collaboration on the basis of privacy-secured federated learning and developed CAIMEN, an efficient chest CT-based artificial intelligence (AI) mediastinal neoplasm diagnosis system. METHODS: In this multicentre cohort study, 7825 mediastinal neoplasm cases and 796 normal controls were collected from 24 centres in China to develop CAIMEN. We further enhanced CAIMEN with several novel algorithms in a multiview, knowledge-transferred, multilevel decision-making pattern. CAIMEN was tested by internal (929 cases at 15 centres), external (1216 cases at five centres and a real-world cohort of 11 162 cases), and human-AI (60 positive cases from four centres and radiologists from 15 institutions) test sets to evaluate its detection, segmentation, and classification performance. FINDINGS: In the external test experiments, the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve for detecting mediastinal neoplasms of CAIMEN was 0·973 (95% CI 0·969-0·977). In the real-world cohort, CAIMEN detected 13 false-negative cases confirmed by radiologists. The dice score for segmenting mediastinal neoplasms of CAIMEN was 0·765 (0·738-0·792). The mediastinal neoplasm classification top-1 and top-3 accuracy of CAIMEN were 0·523 (0·497-0·554) and 0·799 (0·778-0·822), respectively. In the human-AI test experiments, CAIMEN outperformed clinicians with top-1 and top-3 accuracy of 0·500 (0·383-0·633) and 0·800 (0·700-0·900), respectively. Meanwhile, with assistance from the computer aided diagnosis software based on CAIMEN, the 46 clinicians improved their average top-1 accuracy by 19·1% (0·345-0·411) and top-3 accuracy by 13·0% (0·545-0·616). INTERPRETATION: For mediastinal neoplasms, CAIMEN can produce high diagnostic accuracy and assist the diagnosis of human experts, showing its potential for clinical practice. Dementia is a well-known syndrome and Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the main cause of dementia. Lipids play a key role in the pathogenesis of AD, however, the prediction value of serum lipidomics on AD remains unclear. This study aims to construct a lipid score system to predict the risk of progression from mild cognitive impairment (MCI) to AD. First, we used the least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) Cox regression model to select the lipids that can signify the progression from MCI to AD based on 310 older adults with MCI. Then we constructed a lipid score based on 14 single lipids using Cox regression and estimated the association between the lipid score and progression from MCI to AD. The prevalence of AD in the low-, intermediate- and high-score groups was 42.3%, 59.8%, and 79.8%, respectively. The participants in the intermediate- and high-score group had a 1.65-fold (95% CI 1.10 to 2.47) and 3.55-fold (95% CI 2.40 to 5.26) higher risk of AD, respectively, as compared to those with low lipid scores. The lipid score showed moderate prediction efficacy (c-statistics > 0.72). These results suggested that the score system based on serum lipidomics is useful for the prediction of progression from MCI to AD.

Bacterial infection, prolonged inflammation, and insufficient angiogenesis are the main challenges for effective wound repair. In this work, we developed a stretchable, remodeling, self-healing, and antibacterial multifunctional composite hydrogel for infected wound healing. The hydrogel was prepared using tannic acid (TA) and phenylboronic acid-modified gelatin (Gel-BA) through hydrogen bonding and borate ester bonds and incorporated iron-containing bioactive glasses (Fe-BGs) with uniform spherical morphologies and amorphous structures to achieve GTB composite hydrogels. On one hand, the chelation of Fe3+ in Fe-BGs with TA endowed the hydrogel with good photothermal synergistic antibacterial ability; on the other hand, the bioactive Fe3+ and Si ions contained in Fe-BGs can recruit cells and synergistically promote blood vessel formation. In vivo animal experiments showed that the GTB hydrogels remarkably accelerated infected full-thickness skin wound healing by improving granulation tissue formation, collagen deposition, and the formation of nerves and blood vessels while decreasing inflammation. This hydrogel with a dual synergistic effect and ″one stone, two birds″ strategy holds immense potential for wound dressing applications.

The Devonian-Carboniferous (D-C) transition coincides with the Hangenberg Crisis, carbon isotope anomalies, and the enhanced preservation of organic matter associated with marine redox fluctuations. The proposed driving factors for the biotic extinction include variations in the eustatic sea level, paleoclimate fluctuation, climatic conditions, redox conditions, and the configuration of ocean basins. To investigate this phenomenon and obtain information on the paleo-ocean environment of different depositional facies, we studied a shallow-water carbonate section developed in the periplatform slope facies on the southern margin of South China, which includes a well-preserved succession spanning the D-C boundary. The integrated chemostratigraphic trends reveal distinct excursions in the isotopic compositions of bulk nitrogen, carbonate carbon, organic carbon, and total sulfur. A distinct negative δ15 N excursion (~-3.1‰) is recorded throughout the Middle Si. praesulcata Zone and the Upper Si. praesulcata Zone, when the Hangenberg mass extinction occurred. We attribute the nitrogen cycle anomaly to enhanced microbial nitrogen fixation, which was likely a consequence of intensified seawater anoxia associated with increased denitrification, as well as upwelling of anoxic ammonium-bearing waters. Negative excursions in the δ13 Ccarb and δ13 Corg values were identified in the Middle Si. praesulcata Zone and likely resulted from intense deep ocean upwelling that amplified nutrient fluxes and delivered 13 C-depleted anoxic water masses. Decreased δ34 S values during the Middle Si. praesulcata Zone suggests an increasing contribution of water-column sulfate reduction under euxinic conditions. Contributions of organic matter produced by anaerobic metabolisms to the deposition of shallow carbonate in the Upper Si. praesulcata Zone is recorded by the nadir of δ13 Corg values associated with maximal △13 C. The integrated δ15 N-δ13 C-δ34 S data suggest that significant ocean-redox variation was recorded in South China during the D-C transition; and that this prominent fluctuation was likely associated with intense upwelling of deep anoxic waters. The temporal synchrony between the development of euxinia/anoxia and the Hangenberg Event indicates that the redox oscillation was a key factor triggering manifestations of the biodiversity crisis.

The pathophysiology of Alzheimer's disease (AD) is multifactorial with characteristic extracellular accumulation of amyloid-beta (Aß) and intraneuronal aggregation of hyperphosphorylated tau in the brain. Development of disease-modifying treatment for AD has been challenging. Recent studies suggest that deleterious alterations in neurovascular cells happens in parallel with Aß accumulation, inducing tau pathology and necroptosis. Therefore, therapies targeting cellular Aß and tau pathologies may provide a more effective strategy of disease intervention. Tetramethylpyrazine nitrone (TBN) is a nitrone derivative of tetramethylpyrazine, an active ingredient from Ligusticum wallichii Franchat (Chuanxiong). We previously showed that TBN is a potent scavenger of free radicals with multi-targeted neuroprotective effects in rat and monkey models of ischemic stroke. The present study aimed to investigate the anti-AD properties of TBN. We employed AD-related cellular model (N2a/APPswe) and transgenic mouse model (3×Tg-AD mouse) for mechanistic and behavioral studies. Our results showed that TBN markedly improved cognitive functions and reduced Aß and hyperphosphorylated tau levels in mouse model. Further investigation of the underlying mechanisms revealed that TBN promoted non-amyloidogenic processing pathway of amyloid precursor protein (APP) in N2a/APPswe in vitro. Moreover, TBN preserved synapses from dendritic spine loss and upregulated synaptic protein expressions in 3×Tg-AD mice. Proteomic analysis of 3×Tg-AD mouse hippocampal and cortical tissues showed that TBN induced neuroprotective effects through modulating mitophagy, MAPK and mTOR pathways. In particular, TBN significantly upregulated PINK1, a key protein for mitochondrial homeostasis, implicating PINK1 as a potential therapeutic target for AD. In summary, TBN improved cognitive functions in AD-related mouse model, inhibited Aß production and tau hyperphosphorylation, and rescued synaptic loss and neuronal damage. Multiple mechanisms underlie the anti-AD effects of TBN including the modulation of APP processing, mTOR signaling and PINK1-related mitophagy.

This article considers the problem of cooperative fault-tolerant output regulation of linear heterogeneous multiagent systems with actuator faults where the exosystem matrix is known by part of the followers. An adaptive dynamic event-triggered scheme is proposed to avoid continuous communication between followers, removing the assumption that global information should be known for controller design. Different from the existing open-loop estimation method for obtaining intermittent communication, the approach proposed in this article does not require that the system matrices of all agents be the same and known a prior. Compared with the existing static or periodic event-triggered mechanism (ETM), by introducing dynamic variables, a more general form than an exponential function, the proposed adaptive dynamic event-triggered condition provides the potential to save energy and obtain better performance. It is demonstrated that the suggested event-triggered control (ETC) method performs cooperative fault-tolerant output regulation for all followers in a completely distributed way with intermittent communication while excluding Zeno behavior. Finally, a simulation example is carried out to illustrate the efficacy of the suggested strategy.

BACKGROUND: Adenocarcinoma has long been an independent histological class of lung cancer, which leads to high morbidity and mortality. We aimed to investigate the contribution of LINC02126 in lung adenocarcinoma. METHODS: RNA sequencing data and clinical information were downloaded. Diagnostic efficiency and survival analysis of LINC02126 were performed, followed by functional analysis of genes co-expressed with LINC02126 and differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in different LINC02126 expression groups. Tumor immune microenvironment (TIME) cell infiltration and correlation analysis of tumor mutation burden were performed in different LINC02126 expression groups. RESULTS: In lung adenocarcinoma, the expression level of LINC02126 was significantly decreased. Significant expression differences of LINC02126 were found in some clinical variables, including T staging, M staging, sex, stage, and EGFR mutation. LINC02126 had potential diagnostic and prognostic value for patients. In the low LINC02126 expression group, the infiltration degree of most immune cells was significantly lower than that in the high LINC02126 expression group. Tumor mutation burden level and frequency of somatic mutation in patients with low LINC02126 expression group were significantly higher than in patients with high LINC02126 expression group. CONCLUSIONS: LINC02126 could be considered as a diagnostic, prognostic and immunotherapeutic target for lung adenocarcinoma.

Profound malnutrition and immunodeficiency are serious negative effects of radiotherapy and bone marrow transplantation for hematologic malignancy patients. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of nutritional supplementation with a soy-whey protein mixture on hematopoietic and immune reconstitution in an allogeneic transplant mouse model. Male BALB/c (H-2Kd) mice, 6-8 weeks-old, were divided randomly into five groups and then provided with different protein nutrition support. After 28 days, blood samples, bone marrow, spleen, and thymus were harvested to measure the effects. The results showed that soy-whey blended protein supplements promoted hematopoietic stem cell engraftment, body weight recovery, and the recovery of white blood cells, lymphocytes, and neutrophils; triggered the expansion of hematopoietic stem cells and progenitor cell pools by increasing the numbers of the c-kit+ progenitor, Lin-Sca1+c-kit+, short-term hematopoietic stem cells, and multipotent progenitors; enhanced thymus re-establishment and splenic subset recovery in both organ index and absolute number; improved overall nutritional status by increasing total serum protein, albumin, and globulin; protected the liver from radiation-induced injury, and increased antioxidant capacity as indicated by lower concentrations of alanine aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase, malondialdehyde, and 4-hydroxynonenal. This study indicated that soy-whey blended protein as important nutrients, from both plant and animal sources, had a greater positive effect on patients with hematological malignancies to accelerate hematopoiesis and immune reconstitution after bone marrow transplantation.

Lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD) has a high mortality rate. N6-methyl-adenosine (m6A)-related long noncoding RNA (lncRNA) is associated with tumor prognosis. Our objective was to construct an m6A-related lncRNA prognostic model and screen potential drugs for the treatment of LUAD. The LUAD sequencing data were randomly divided into Train and Test cohorts. In the Train group, the LASSO Cox regression was used to construct the m6A-related lncRNA prognostic model. The LUAD tumor immune dysfunction and exclusion model was used to evaluate immunotherapy efficacy in LUAD. The 'pRRophetic' package was utilized to screen potential drugs for the treatment of LUAD. Eleven m6A-related lncRNAs were identified by LASSO Cox regression and were used to construct the risk model to calculate sample risk scores. Patients were divided into high- and low-risk groups based on their median risk scores. The LUAD data of The Cancer Genome Atlas database showed that the overall survival (OS) of the high-risk group was significantly lower than that of the low-risk group in both cohorts. Multivariate Cox regression analysis showed that this risk model could serve as an independent prognostic factor of LUAD, and receiver operating characteristic curves suggested that m6A-related lncRNA prognostic signature has a good ability in predicting OS. Finally, nine potential drugs for LUAD treatment were screened based on this prognostic model. The prognostic model constructed based on the m6A-related lncRNAs facilitated prognosis prediction in LUAD patients. The screened therapeutic agents have potential application values and provide a reference for the clinical treatment of LUAD.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effectiveness of molding custom-made insoles for female patients with foot pain. METHODS: The study included 20 patients whose insoles were prescribed according to biomechanical evaluations and molded by repositioning the subtalar joint in its neutral position using a simple set of tools. Plantar biomechanics were measured under the following conditions: static stand, walking at self-comfortable walking speed (CWS) barefoot, walking in patient owned running shoes, and walking in running shoes plus insoles. Each patient's upper arm isometric muscle strength and subjective feelings before and after the insole intervention were assessed. RESULTS: The molded insoles increased plantar contact area both during static standing and walking at CWS compared to the barefoot condition. The insoles also had more evenly distributed plantar contact area and loading rate, with the changes in the medial arch area being most significant. Moreover, the custom-made insole intervention immediately increased maximum resistance and duration of bilateral upper arms, as well as improved foot comfort, especially at the medial arch area during single leg squat tests. CONCLUSION: Molding custom-made insoles by repositioning the subtalar joint in its neutral position can be accomplished with a simple set of tools, making this method highly applicable for a majority of less developed regions. Insoles molded using this method are effective in immediately improving plantar biomechanics disorders and enhancing isometric upper muscle performance in female patients with foot pain.

BACKGROUND: Non-small cell lung carcinoma (NSCLC) is a type lung cancer with high malignant behaviors. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are known to be involved in progression of NSCLC. In order to explore potential targets for the treatment of NSCLC, bioinformatics tool was used to analyze differential expressed miRNAs between NSCLC and adjacent normal tissues. METHODS: Bioinformatics tool was used to find potential targets for NSCLC. Cell proliferation was investigated by Ki67 staining. Cell apoptosis was measured by flow cytometry. mRNA and protein expression in NSCLC cells were detected by RT-qPCR and Western-blot, respectively. Transwell assay was performed to test the cell migration and invasion. In order to investigate the function of exosomal miRNA in NSCLC, in vivo model of NSCLC was constructed. RESULTS: MiR-770 was identified to be downregulated in NSCLC, and miR-770 agomir could significantly inhibit NSCLC cell proliferation through inducing the apoptosis. Additionally, the metastasis of NSCLC cells was decreased by miR-770 agomir. MAP3K1 was identified to be the target mRNA of miR-770. Meanwhile, tumor cell-derived exosomal miR-770 inhibited M2 macrophage polarization via downregulation of MAP3K1, which in turn suppressed NSCLC cell invasion. Besides, tumor cell-derived exosomal miR-770 markedly decreased NSCLC tumor growth in vivo through suppressing M2 macrophage polarization. CONCLUSION: Tumor cell-derived exosomal miR-770 inhibits M2 macrophage polarization to inhibit the invasion of NSCLC cells via targeting MAP3K1. Thus, this study provided a new strategy for the treatment of NSCLC.

BACKGROUND: LncRNA was known to be closely associated with the progression of human tumors. The role of lncRNA LIFR-AS1 in the pathogenesis and progression of gastric tumor is still unclear. The aim of this study was to investigate the function of LIFR-AS1 and the underlying mechanism in the pathogenesis and progression of gastric cancer. METHODS: QRT-PCR was used to evaluate the expression of LIFR-AS1, miR-29a-3p and COL1A2 in gastric tumor tissues and cells. Western blotting was used to evaluate the protein expression of COL1A2 in gastric tumor cells. CCK-8 assay, transwell assay and flow cytometry were used to evaluate the roles of LIFR-AS1, miR-29a-3p and COL1A2 in cell proliferation, invasion, migration and apoptosis. The relationship among LIFR-AS1, miR-29a-3p and COL1A2 was assessed by bioinformatics analyses and luciferase reporter assay. RESULTS: The expression levels of LIFR-AS1 were significantly increased in gastric tumor tissues and cells, while the expression levels of miR-29a-3p were decreased. The expression of miR-29a-3p was negatively correlated with the expression of LIFR-AS1 in gastric cancer tumor tissues. Knocking down of LIFR-AS1 inhibited proliferation, invasion and migration of gastric tumor cells, and induced apoptosis of gastric tumor cells. Bioinformatics analyses and integrated experiments revealed that LIFR-AS1 elevated the expression of COL1A2 through sponging miR-29a-3p, which further resulted in the progression of gastric tumor. CONCLUSION: LIFR-AS1 plays an important role as a competing endogenous RNA in gastric tumor pathogenesis and may be a potential target for the diagnosis and treatment of gastric tumor.

BACKGROUND: Transient ischemic attack (TIA) is a brief episode of cerebral ischemia. However, if a symptom is not presented as drop attack or hemiplegia, and alarming to the patient and the physician, how short of a symptom duration would raise the concern of a physician for TIA? It will be more complicated if the location of the neurological deficit is vagrant. This report highlights a rare TIA case which presented a very short duration of migratory patchy distribution numbness. CASE PRESENTATION: A middle-aged gentleman was presented with recurrent patchy distribution numbness on the right side of the body for 2 months, with the episode lasting as short as about 10 s. The location of the numbness was erratic and migratory. Magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) revealed mild stenosis on the left middle cerebral artery (MCA). Transcranial Doppler (TCD) micro-emboli monitoring detected positive micro-emboli signals (MES), leading to the confirmation of a TIA diagnosis. After a standard dual antiplatelet treatment combined with enhanced lipid reduction therapy with statins, MES disappeared on dynamic TCD emboli monitoring, and no more episodes of TIA have been noticed on the follow-ups. CONCLUSION: TIA caused by micro-emboli can display as recurrent migratory neurological deficit within seconds. TCD micro-emboli monitoring is very helpful to differentiate this situation from TIA mimics with follow-ups, as well as to locate unstable plague.

Accurate gait event detection is necessary for control strategies of gait rehabilitation robots. However, due to personal diversity between individuals, it is a challenge for robots to detect a gait event at various stride frequencies. This paper proposes a novel method for gait event detection of a gait rehabilitation robot using a single inertial sensor mounted on the thigh. A self-adaptive threshold for detecting heel strike is obtained in real time via a linear regression model. Observable thresholds for toe off detection are constant at various stride frequencies. Experiments are conducted based on 20 healthy subjects and six hemiplegic patients wearing a gait rehabilitation robot and walking at various kinds of stride frequencies. The experimental results show that the proposed method can detect heel strike and toe off gait events within an average 2% gait cycle temporal errors and never miss two-gait event detection. Compared to the conventional thresholding method, this work presents a simple and robust application for gait event detection in healthy and hemiplegic subjects by one inertial sensor. The linear regression model can be applicable to different subjects walking at various stride frequencies.

BACKGROUND: Maintaining compliance with personal preventive measures is important to achieve a balance of COVID-19 pandemic control and work resumption. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate self-reported compliance with four personal measures to prevent COVID-19 among a sample of factory workers in Shenzhen, China, at the beginning of work resumption in China following the COVID-19 outbreak. These preventive measures included consistent wearing of face masks in public spaces (the workplace and other public settings); sanitizing hands using soap, liquid soap, or alcohol-based hand sanitizer after returning from public spaces or touching public installations and equipment; avoiding social and meal gatherings; and avoiding crowded places. METHODS: The participants were adult factory workers who had resumed work in Shenzhen, China. A stratified two-stage cluster sampling design was used. We randomly selected 14 factories that had resumed work. All full-time employees aged ≥18 years who had resumed work in these factories were invited to complete a web-based survey. Out of 4158 workers who had resumed work in these factories, 3035 (73.0%) completed the web-based survey from March 1 to 14, 2020. Multilevel logistic regression models were fitted. RESULTS: Among the 3035 participants, 2938 (96.8%) and 2996 (98.7%) reported always wearing a face mask in the workplace and in other public settings, respectively, in the past month. However, frequencies of self-reported sanitizing hands (2152/3035, 70.9%), avoiding social and meal gatherings (2225/3035, 73.3%), and avoiding crowded places (1997/3035, 65.8%) were relatively low. At the individual level, knowledge about COVID-19 (adjusted odds ratios [AORs] from 1.16, CI 1.10-1.24, to 1.29, CI 1.21-1.37), perceived risk (AORs from 0.58, CI 0.50-0.68, to 0.85, CI 0.72-0.99) and severity (AOR 1.05, CI 1.01-1.09, and AOR 1.07, CI 1.03-1.11) of COVID-19, perceived effectiveness of preventive measures by the individual (AORs from 1.05, CI 1.00-1.10, to 1.09, CI 1.04-1.13), organization (AOR 1.30, CI 1.20-1.41), and government (AORs from 1.14, CI 1.04-1.25, to 1.21, CI 1.02-1.42), perceived preparedness for a potential outbreak after work resumption (AORs from 1.10, CI 1.00-1.21, to 1.50, CI 1.36-1.64), and depressive symptoms (AORs from 0.93, CI 0.91-0.94, to 0.96, CI 0.92-0.99) were associated with self-reported compliance with at least one personal preventive measure. At the interpersonal level, exposure to COVID-19-specific information through official media channels (AOR 1.08, CI 1.04-1.11) and face-to-face communication (AOR 0.90, CI 0.83-0.98) were associated with self-reported sanitizing of hands. The number of preventive measures implemented in the workplace was positively associated with self-reported compliance with all four preventive measures (AORs from 1.30, CI 1.08-1.57, to 1.63, CI 1.45-1.84). CONCLUSIONS: Measures are needed to strengthen hand hygiene and physical distancing among factory workers to reduce transmission following work resumption. Future programs in workplaces should address these factors at multiple levels.
