RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has significantly impacted the supply and transfusion of blood components. This study aims to evaluate changes in blood collection and transfusions during the period following the nationwide Level 3 alert (May-July 2021). METHODS: We retrieved usage data for red blood cells (RBC) from the Taiwan National Health Insurance (NHI) database 2019-2021. RESULTS: During the Level 3 alert period, approximately 85% of COVID-19 cases (11,455/13,624) were in Taipei. In Taipei, blood collection declined by 26.34% and RBC transfusions decreased by 17.14% compared to pre-pandemic levels. RBC usage decreased across all service types, with a significant decrease observed in hematology/oncology by 15.62% (-483 patients, -2,425 units). In non-Taipei regions, blood collection declined by 12.54%, rebounding around one month earlier than in Taipei. The decline in RBC transfusions occurred one month later than in Taipei, with a much lower magnitude (4.57%). Strain on the blood supply occurred in May and June in both Taipei and non-Taipei regions. Among 7,532 hospitalized COVID-19 patients, approximately 6.9% patients required a total of 1,873 RBC transfusions. The rapid increase in COVID-19 inpatients did not significantly increase the burden of blood demands. SUMMARY: During the Level 3 alert, the most significant decline in both RBC collection and transfusions was observed in Taipei. In non-Taipei regions, the decrease in RBC use was only marginal. Notably, there was a significant decrease in RBC use in hematology/oncology in Taipei. This study supports transfusion specialists in seeking efficient ways to address similar future challenges.

RESUMO

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic autoimmune inflammatory disorder in which monocytes adhering to synovial tissue differentiate into the pro-inflammatory M1 macrophage phenotype. Nerve growth factors (NGF) referred to as neurotrophins have been associated with inflammatory events; however, researchers have yet to elucidate the role of NGF in RA. Our examination of clinical tissue samples and analysis of data sourced from the Gene Expression Omnibus dataset unveiled elevated expression levels of M1 macrophage markers in human RA synovial tissue samples compared to normal tissue, with no such distinction observed for M2 markers. Furthermore, immunofluorescence data depicted increased expression levels of NGF and M1 macrophages in RA mice in contrast to normal mice. It appears that NGF stimulation facilitates macrophage polarization from the M0 to the M1 phenotype. It also appears that NGF promotes ICAM-1 production in human RA synovial fibroblasts, which enhances monocyte adhesion through the TrkA, MEK/ERK, and AP-1 signaling cascades. Our findings indicate NGF/TrkA axis as a novel target for the treatment of RA.

RESUMO

Background: The Taiwanese government made a concerted effort to contain a coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) nosocomial outbreak of variant B.1.429, shortly before universal vaccination program implementation. This study aimed to investigate seroprevalence in the highest-risk regions. Methods: Between January and February 2021, we retrieved 10 000 repository serum samples from blood donors to examine for antibodies against severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) nucleocapsid (N) and spike (S) antigens. A positive result was confirmed if anti-N and anti-S antibodies were positive. Overall, 2000 donors residing in the highest-risk district and donating blood in January 2021 were further examined for SARS-CoV-2 RNA. We estimated seroprevalence and compared the epidemic curve between confirmed COVID-19 cases and blood donors with positive antibodies or viral RNA. Results: Twenty-one cases with COVID-19 were confirmed in the nosocomial cluster, with an incidence of 1.27/100 000 in the COVID-affected districts. Among 4888 close contacts of the nosocomial cases, 20 (0.4%) became confirmed cases during isolation. Anti-SARS-CoV-2 was detected in 2 of the 10000 blood donors, showing a seroprevalence of 2/10000 (95% CI, 0.55-7.29). None of the 2000 donors who underwent tests for SARS-CoV-2 RNA were positive. The SARS-CoV-2 infection epidemic curve was observed sporadically in blood donors compared with the nosocomial cluster. Conclusions: In early 2021, an extremely low anti-SARS-CoV-2 seroprevalence among blood donors was observed. Epidemic control measures through precise close contact tracing, testing, and isolation effectively contained SARS-CoV-2 transmission before universal vaccination program implementation.

RESUMO

Chondrosarcoma is a primary malignant bone tumor. Traditional therapy is not very effective, and it is prone to metastasis in the late stage. The tumor microenvironment (TME) plays a key role in the progression and metastasis of chondrosarcoma, and hypoxia is one of the key factors in the formation of TME. However, the detailed mechanism of how hypoxia affects tumor progression and metastasis in chondrosarcoma is still not fully understood. In this study, we focused on the mechanism of interaction between hypoxic chondrosarcoma cells (SW1353) and macrophages. Our results suggest that hypoxia enhances the release of exosomes from chondrosarcoma cells. These hypoxia-induced exosomes promoted macrophage polarization towards the M2 phenotype, characterized by the expression of CD163 and CD206, but not the M1 phenotype, characterized by CD86 expression. Further analysis revealed that M2 macrophages polarized by exosomes expressed arginase-1 and feedback to chondrosarcoma cells to promote migration. These results suggest that chondrosarcoma cells secrete more exosomes in a hypoxic microenvironment, and these hypoxia-derived exosomes induce the polarization of macrophages into an M2 phenotype, ultimately promoting the metastatic behavior of chondrosarcoma cells.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To investigate the effects of various demographic, structural, radiographic, and clinical factors on the prognosis of patients with medial compartmental knee osteoarthritis with varus deformity undergoing medial opening wedge high tibial osteotomy (HTO) in combination with bone marrow concentrate (BMC) injection. METHODS: In this prospective study, 20 patients underwent medial opening wedge HTO in combination with BMC injection with 12 months of follow-up. The structural and radiographic outcomes were evaluated by femorotibial angle and posterior tibial slope angle. The clinical outcomes were evaluated by visual analogue scale (VAS), Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Arthritis Index (WOMAC), and The Knee injury and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score (KOOS). Multivariate nonlinear mixed-effects models with asymptotic regressions were used to model the trajectory of symptom improvement. RESULTS: Medial opening wedge HTO in combination with BMC corrected the malalignment of the knee and led to significant symptom relief. The improvement of clinical symptoms reached a plateau 6 months after the surgery. Greater symptom severity at baseline and lower Kellgren-Lawrance (KL) grades were correlated with better post-operative clinical outcomes. Body-Mass-Index (BMI), femorotibial angle, age, and sex may also play a role in influencing the extent of symptom relief. CONCLUSION: Symptom severity at baseline is important for prognosis prediction. In clinical practice, we suggest that the evaluation of clinical features and functional status of the patients be more emphasised.

RESUMO

There are many published cup anteversion measurements for postoperative total hip arthroplasty (THA), including Liaw's, Lewinnek's, and Murray's methods. However, most measurements ignore the potential pelvic rotation on radiographs except in Liaw's method. Without considering pelvic rotation, clinicians can miscalculate cup anteversion. Therefore, we aimed to quantify the mean degree of pelvic rotation. Herein, we collected 388 radiographs of 98 postoperative THA hips of 77 patients and measured pelvic rotation by measuring h, the horizontal displacement of the sacrococcygeal junction associated with the upper pole of the symphysis pubis, and ssd, the distance between the sacrococcygeal junction and pubic symphysis. The angle θ of pelvic rotation was defined as θ = arc sin (h/ssd) × (180°/π). The mean degree of pelvic rotation was then calculated. The standard deviation of h was 7.84 mm, and the mean ssd was 158 mm. The potential pelvic rotation was 2.50°. The p-values from the paired t-test were all >0.05 when interobserver and intraobserver errors were assessed. This is the first study to quantify the potential pelvic rotation in the coronal plane on postoperative plain radiographs. The potential pelvic rotation was too large to be neglected during the measurement of cup anteversion.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Viral- and host-targeted traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) formulae NRICM101 and NRICM102 were administered to hospitalized patients with COVID-19 during the mid-2021 outbreak in Taiwan. We report the outcomes by measuring the risks of intubation or admission to intensive care unit (ICU) for patients requiring no oxygen support, and death for those requiring oxygen therapy. METHODS: This multicenter retrospective study retrieved data of 840 patients admitted to 9 hospitals between May 1 and July 26, 2021. After propensity score matching, 302 patients (151 received NRICM101 and 151 did not) and 246 patients (123 received NRICM102 and 123 did not) were included in the analysis to assess relative risks. RESULTS: During the 30-day observation period, no endpoint occurred in the patients receiving NRICM101 plus usual care while 14 (9.27%) in the group receiving only usual care were intubated or admitted to ICU. The numbers of deceased patients were 7 (5.69%) in the group receiving NRICM102 plus usual care and 27 (21.95%) in the usual care group. No patients receiving NRICM101 transitioned to a more severe status; NRICM102 users were 74.07% less likely to die than non-users (relative risk= 25.93%, 95% confidence interval 11.73%-57.29%). CONCLUSION: NRICM101 and NRICM102 were significantly associated with a lower risk of intubation/ICU admission or death among patients with mild-to-severe COVID-19. This study provides real-world evidence of adopting broad-spectrum oral therapeutics and shortening the gap between outbreak and effective response. It offers a new vision in our preparation for future pandemics.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Evidence for mitigation of transfusion-transmitted dengue informed by surveillance data is lacking. In this study, we evaluated the risk of positive dengue viral (DENV) ribonucleic acid (RNA) from blood transfusions during a large outbreak in Taiwan. METHODS: Serum collected from blood donors living in districts experiencing the dengue epidemic were tested for DENV RNA using a qualitative transcription-mediated nucleic acid amplification assay (TMA). The TMA-reactive specimens were further tested for immunoglobulin (Ig)M and IgG antibodies, nonstructural protein 1 (NS1) antigen, and viral RNA by reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction. We estimated DENV RNA prevalence and the number of DENV infections among blood donors. RESULTS: A total of 4976 specimens were tested for DENV RNA, and 21 were TMA-reactive. The detection rate was 0.84 (95% confidence interval [CI], 0.15-4.73), 3.36 (95% CI, 1.31-8.60), and 6.19 (95% CI, 3.14-12.17) per 1000 donors in districts where the weekly dengue incidence was 5-50, 50-200, and 200 or more per 100 000 residents, respectively. Alanine aminotransferase screening only detected 4.4% of TMA-reactive donations. A total of 143 transfusion-transmitted DENV infections probably occurred during this outbreak, accounting for 9.2 in 10 000 dengue infections. CONCLUSIONS: Approximately 0.5%-1% of blood donations were DENV RNA positive in epidemic districts. The correlation of DENV RNA rates with dengue incidence may inform the design of effective control measures.

RESUMO

Due to excessive clinical blood usage and a rapidly aging population, an impending blood shortage in Taiwan is inevitable. This study aimed to determine the potential blood deficit in Taiwan in 2030. The numbers of units of whole blood (WB) donated and red blood cells (RBC) transfused will increase from 1,182,973 to 1,115,803 in 2018 to 1,230,500 and 1,250,760 in 2030, respectively. Considering the gap between donation and transfusion, we estimate a deficit of 97,633 units of WB in 2030. Blood collection will increasingly rely on donors over the age of 40. Moreover, we observed a large decline in units of WB donated among people less than 25 years old. A growing demand for RBC is attributed to the aging population and limited decreases in age-specific units of RBC transfused per capita. Scrutinizing and forecasting changes in blood collection and transfusion are necessary for generating strategies to mitigate blood shortages.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Large-scale single nucleotide variation (SNV)-based blood group genotyping assays have been made available for over a decade. Due to differences in ethnic groups, there is much diversity in clinically important blood group antigens and genetic variants. Here, we developed a robust matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight (MALDI-TOF)-based blood group genotyping method on MassARRAY system. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: A total of 1428 donors were enrolled into three groups: (a) reagent red cell donors; (b) rare donor or common antigen-negative donors; and (c) group O, R1 R1 /R2 R2 donors. Forty-two SNVs were designed for determining nine blood groups, with X/Y chromosome in two multiplex reactions, on MassARRAY 96-well format system. Further targeted sequence analyses were performed by Sanger sequencing. RESULTS: WHO reference reagent (NIBSC code: 11/214) was tested for concordance with the provided genotype results. Among the donors, concordance rate was over 99%. Alleles of important phenotypes such as Mi(a+), Di(a+), and Asian-type DEL and alleles of rare blood groups such as Fy(a-), Jk(a-b-) and s- were screened. Three types of discrepancies were found. Serologically, the 'N' antigen was expressed on genetically MM with GYP*Mur red blood cells and caused genuine discrepancies (9.5%). Genetically, allele dropout (ADO) was caused by rare SNV in the primer for Ss genotype (2.1%) and partial insertion of RHD genes (0.9%) led to difficulties in predicting phenotypes. CONCLUSION: Hemo panel module and MassARRAY System in 96-well format showed good performance in terms of large-scale blood group genotyping and phenotype predictions. Implementation of this method is effective for routine blood group genotype screening of donors.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: In Taiwan, plasma use per capita ranks among the highest in the world. We aimed to describe the trends in usage after the introduction of new hospital accreditation standards that evaluate compliance with institutional plasma transfusion guidelines. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We identified hospitalizations receiving plasma between 2007 and 2017 from the national health insurance database. We estimated plasma transfusions per thousand capita. The risk ratio of transfusion rates among hospitalizations in 2017 compared to 2007 was estimated using logistic regression. RESULTS: The total number of plasma transfusions declined from 964,408 in 2007 to 659,828 in 2017, yielding a rate of 28.00 per thousand capita. The proportion of hospitalizations receiving plasma declined by 38%, from 3.89% (95% confidence interval: 3.86%-3.91%) to 2.62% (2.61%-2.64%). Gastroenterology (16.4%) and general surgery (15.3%) accounted for the largest proportions of plasma usage. Within these two services, liver diseases were the top diagnoses needing plasma use. For hospitalized patients with liver diseases, approximately 40% of plasma units were administered to patients with neither noticeable bleeding nor red blood cells transfusions. Among these patients, almost 50% received plasma with an international normalized ratio trigger of less than 1.50. The use of potential alternative therapies or anticoagulants remained quite low during this period. CONCLUSION: Plasma utilization rates during hospitalizations continuously declined over 11 years. However, inappropriate plasma use remained high, while the use of alternative therapies remained low in services such as gastroenterology. To improve the appropriateness of plasma transfusions, patient blood management should be implemented in the near future.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Osteoporosis with vertebral compression fractures is increasingly common in the elderly population. Cement augmentation is one of the effective surgical treatments for these patients. Currently, there are several different types of cement augmentation treatments. No studies have compared the safety and efficacy of different cement augmentation types for the treatment of such fractures; thus, we retrospectively compared vertebroplasty, balloon kyphoplasty, and kyphoplasty with SpineJack or an intravertebral expandable pillar. AIM: To compare the postoperative safety and efficacy of each surgical intervention in treating vertebral compression fractures. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 354 patients with acute vertebral compression fractures, defined as signal changes in the T1 weighted magnetic resonance imaging, and randomly divided the patients into five groups. Their visual analog scale scores for pain, kyphotic angle, average body height, rate of cement leakage, and occurrence of adjacent vertebral compression fractures were followed for 1 year. One-way analysis of variance, the post hoc Bonferroni test, and Fisher exact probability test were used for statistical analyses. RESULTS: All pain scores significantly improved 12 mo postoperatively; however, there was no significant difference between the groups (P = 0.325). Kyphoplasty with SpineJack significantly reduced the kyphotic angle (P = 0.028) and restored the height of the vertebral body (P = 0.02). The rate of adjacent compression fractures was the highest in the vertebroplasty group, with a statistically significant difference according to the Fisher exact probability test (P = 0.02). The treatment with the lowest cement leakage rate cannot be identified because of the small sample size; however, kyphoplasty with SpineJack, an IVEP, and vesselplasty resulted in lower rates of cement leakage than balloon kyphoplasty and vertebroplasty. CONCLUSION: Kyphoplasty with SpineJack has good outcomes in kyphotic angle reduction and body height restoration. Vertebroplasty has the highest cement leakage rate and adjacent compression fracture occurrence.

RESUMO

Glycophorin hybrids such as GP.Mur are common in Southeast Asians. In Taiwan, clinically significant alloantibodies to the GP.Mur phenotype are the most important issue in blood banks. A large-scale screening of glycophorin hybrids in the Taiwanese population is urgently needed to ensure transfusion safety. Four clones of human hybridomas that secrete anti-Mia, anti-MUT, and anti-Mur were established by fusing human B-lymphocytes and myeloma cells (JMS-3). The specificity of each monoclonal antibody (MoAb) was characterized. Three MoAbs were applied on an Automated Pretransfusion Blood Testing Analyzer (PK7300/PK7400) for donor screening. Genotyping was performed to determine the detailed subgrouping of glycophorin hybrids. Four MoAbs are IgM antibodies. Anti-Mia (377T) binds to 46DXHKRDTYA54, 48HKRDTYAAHT57 peptides, and anti-Mia (367T) binds to 43QTNDXHKRD51 peptides (X indicates T, M, or K). Anti-Mur is reactive with 49KRDTYPAHTA58 peptides. Anti-MUT is reactive with 47KHKRDTYA54. A total of 78,327 donors were screened using three MoAbs, and 3690 (4.71%) were GP.Mur, 20 (0.025%) were GP.Hut, and 18 (0.022%) were GP.Vw. When the Mia antigen was introduced as routine screening, the frequency of Mi(a+) among blood donors in Taiwan was 4.66% (67,348/1,444,541). Mia antigen was implemented as a routine blood testing, and the results were labeled on all red blood cell (RBC) units.

RESUMO

Intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) is used in the treatment of immunological, inflammatory and neurological conditions. We aimed to describe the trends in IVIG utilization in Taiwan. We identified patients receiving IVIG through the national health insurance (NHI) database. We described the distribution of IVIG use according to main indications. During 2008-2017, IVIG distribution grew 10% per year on average. The population IVIG dose was 8.0 g per thousand capita. Among the total distribution, approximately 60% were NHI-reimbursed. Pediatrics (52.3%), rheumatology (14.0%) and hematology/oncology (11.4%) accounted for the top three services in terms of IVIG consumption. Primary and secondary immune deficiency (29.8%), Kawasaki disease (20.5%) and thrombocytopenia (16.8%) were the top three indications. Neurological conditions only accounted for 3%. In brief, unlike countries with high population use, the proportion of reimbursed IVIG used for neurological conditions was low. Further studies on self-paid IVIG use is needed to completely understand utilization in Taiwan.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Osteoarthritis (OA) and rheumatoid arthritis (RA) are common joint disorders that are considered to be different diseases due to their unique molecular mechanisms and pathogenesis. Chemokines and their corresponding receptors have been well characterized in RA progression, but less so in OA pathogenesis. METHODS: The human primary synovial fibroblasts (SFs) were obtained from human OA and RA tissue samples. The Western blot and qPCR were performed to analyze the expression levels of CXCL1, as well as CXCL-promoted IL-6 expression in both OASFs and RASFs. The signal cascades that mediate the CXCL1-promoted IL-6 expression were identified by using chemical inhibitors, siRNAs, and shRNAs. RESULTS: Here, we found that both diseases feature elevated levels of CXCL1 and interleukin (IL)-6, an important proinflammatory cytokine that participates in OA and RA pathogenesis. In OASFs and RASFs, CXCL1 promoted IL-6 expression in a dose- and time-dependent manner. In OASFs and RASFs overexpressing CXCL1 or transduced with shRNA plasmid, IL-6 expression was markedly upregulated. CXCR2, c-Raf, and MAPKs were found to regulate CXCL1-induced IL-6 expression in OASFs and RASFs. Finally, CXCL1 triggered the transcriptional activities of c-Jun (which regulates the expression of proinflammatory proteins) in OASFs and RASFs. CONCLUSIONS: Our present work suggests that the CXCL1/CXCR2 axis helps to orchestrate inflammatory responses in OA and RA SFs.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Several cup anteversion measurements for post-operative total hip arthroplasty (THA) surgery have been described. We developed the standardized Liaw's trigonometric method to eliminate the influence of patient position, which is the most accurate method for cup anteversion measurement. We then developed an ellipse method using the Elliversion software and reported an interobserver error reduction in 2013. In this study, we attempted to apply this ellipse method in the clinic and compared its accuracy with the standard trigonometric version. METHODS: In the present study, we attempted to incorporate the ellipse method with Liaw's standardized anteversion in the simulated cup position. We measured standardized Liaw's anteversion for 434 radiographs in the clinic using the ellipse method. Repeated standard deviation (RSD) was calculated for accuracy evaluation. Furthermore, paired t-test was used for comparison with the interobserver and intraobserver errors. RESULTS: We found that the standardized Liaw's anteversion measured using the ellipse method showed lower RSD than the radiographic version. RSD was 0.795 in the standardized Liaw's anteversion with ellipse method group. The p-values of the paired t-test were all higher than 0.05 when measuring the interobserver and intraobserver errors. It indicated that the ellipse method was a precise and simple tool for cup anteversion measurement. CONCLUSION: We believe that this ellipse measurement can assist surgeons while placing the acetabulum cup into the precise position and enable early diagnosis of acetabulum loosening.

RESUMO

The prevalence of hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection in Taiwan was approximately 4% a decade ago, much higher than the worldwide average. This study aimed to assess the HCV burden among 4 million voluntary blood donors after 2 decades of prevention and treatment policies. We retrieved screening results for anti-HCV and HCV RNA from the Database for Evaluating Voluntary Taiwanese Eligible Donors. First-time blood donors who donated blood after 1999 and repeat donors who donated blood more than once between 2013 and 2017 were included to estimate HCV prevalence and incidence, respectively. The Cox proportional hazards model was used to estimate hazard ratios. Geographic variation in HCV prevalence and incidence in 364 townships was also analyzed. The prevalence study included 3,656,598 first-time donors. The overall crude prevalence of anti-HCV decreased from 15.5 to 4.5 per 1,000 donors between 1999 and 2017. Younger birth cohorts had a significantly lower prevalence of anti-HCV. The majority of townships (64.3%) in Taiwan showed a significantly decreased prevalence. The incidence study included 1,393,014 repeat donors followed for 3,436,607 person-years. Ninety-eight donors seroconverted to HCV RNA positivity, resulting in an HCV incidence of 2.9 per 100,000 person-years. Donors living in townships where HCV RNA prevalence was greater than 2 per 1,000 had at least 2.5-fold greater risk of new HCV infection. Conclusion: HCV prevalence in Taiwanese first-time blood donors decreased by 71% in the last 2 decades. However, townships with higher HCV prevalence also showed higher HCV incidence and require more active intervention.

RESUMO

Continuous strengthening of the safety of blood products to reduce the risk of transfusion-transmitted HCV in recipients is an important issue of Taiwanese government concern. Since 2013, highly sensitivity serology and NAT assays were simultaneously used for blood donation screening to shorten the window period of HIV, HBV and HCV infections. 15 cases of suspected transfusion-transmitted HCV infection were analyzed in 2015-2018. No HCV nucleic acid was detected among a total 91 bags of donated blood. Eleven cases among the 15 suspected recipients were positive for HCV nucleic acid, and 9 recipients had genotype results. Of these 9 recipients, five for genotype 1b (5/9, 55.6%), three for genotype 2a (3/9, 33.3%) and one for genotype 2b (1/9, 11.1%). We will continuously monitor the blood safety of recipients. There have been no confirmed cases of acute hepatitis C (AHC) infection due to transfusions of HCV contaminated blood product in 2015-2018 in Taiwan.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The statistical shape model (SSM) of numerous bones has been used to determine the anatomical representative of the population- or race-specific design for periarticular implants. Whether to include size- and profile-mismatched bones in the SSM calculation is debatable. Therefore, the objective of this study was to characterize the screening strategies for the mismatched bones to improve the SSM calculation. METHODS: The bone database used in this study consisted of 20 pelvises. A systematic four-staged SSM calculation was used to evaluate the accuracy of the predicted SSM shape among the four size- and profile-screening strategies. Additionally, the surface-smoothing effects on the SSM results were investigated. Two comparison indices were used in terms of profile difference and surface smoothness. RESULTS: Significant variations in size and profile existed for the collected bones. By normalizing the aspect ratio of all bones, exclusion of the size-mismatched bones reduced the maximum and root mean square (RMS) error values of the profile difference by 18.9% and 17.5%, respectively. After further excluding the profile-improper bones, normalization reduced the RMS profile difference by 24.1% compared with the non-normalized strategy. Exclusion of the size-improper bones for non-normalized strategy would have reduced the RMS profile difference by 15.4%. After smoothness, the RMS profile difference of SSM was only 6.1% higher than that of the non-smoothness SSM. CONCLUSIONS: The four-stage calculation showed that the most favorable strategy was to normalize bones to the same aspect ratio and exclude improperly shaped bones. The model permitted inclusion of the original characteristics of the bones and preserved their shapes and excluded only significantly improper bones. After SSM calculation, the smoothed process provided satisfaction in quality with a statistically insignificant loss in bone morphology for population- or race-specific designs of implants.
