RESUMO

The integration of a silicon (Si) anode into lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) holds great promise for energy storage, but challenges arise from unstable electrochemical reactions and volume changes during cycling. This study investigates the influence of reduced graphene oxide (rGO) size on the performance of rGO-protected Si composite (Si@rGO) anodes. Two sizes of graphene oxide (GO(L) and GO(S)) are used to synthesize Si@rGO composites with a core-shell structure by spray drying and thermal reduction. Electrochemical evaluations show the advantages of the Si@rGO(S) anode with improved cycle life and cycling efficiency over Si@rGO(L) and pure Si. The Si@rGO(S) anode facilitates the formation of a stable LiF-rich solid electrolyte interface (SEI) after cycling, ensuring enhanced capacity retention and swelling control. Rate capability tests also demonstrate the superior high-power performance of Si@rGO(S) with low and stable resistances in Si@rGO(S) over extended cycles. This study provides critical insights into the tailoring of graphene-protected Si composites, highlighting the critical role of rGO size in shaping structural and electrochemical properties. The Si material wrapped by graphene with an optimal lateral size of graphene emerges as a promising candidate for high-performance LIB anodes, thereby advancing electrochemical energy storage technologies.

BACKGROUND: Synthetic oxytocin (sOT) is frequently administered during parturition. Studies have raised concerns that fetal exposure to sOT may be associated with altered brain development and risk of neurodevelopmental disorders. In a large and diverse sample of children with data about intrapartum sOT exposure and subsequent diagnoses of two prevalent neurodevelopmental disorders, i.e., attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and autism spectrum disorder (ASD), we tested the following hypotheses: (1) Intrapartum sOT exposure is associated with increased odds of child ADHD or ASD; (2) associations differ across sex; (3) associations between intrapartum sOT exposure and ADHD or ASD are accentuated in offspring of mothers with pre-pregnancy obesity. METHODS: The study sample comprised 12,503 participants from 44 cohort sites included in the Environmental Influences on Child Health Outcomes (ECHO) consortium. Mixed-effects logistic regression analyses were used to estimate the association between intrapartum sOT exposure and offspring ADHD or ASD (in separate models). Maternal obesity (pre-pregnancy BMI ≥ 30 kg/m2) and child sex were evaluated for effect modification. RESULTS: Intrapartum sOT exposure was present in 48% of participants. sOT exposure was not associated with increased odds of ASD (adjusted odds ratio [aOR] 0.86; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.71-1.03) or ADHD (aOR 0.89; 95% CI, 0.76-1.04). Associations did not differ by child sex. Among mothers with pre-pregnancy obesity, sOT exposure was associated with lower odds of offspring ADHD (aOR 0.72; 95% CI, 0.55-0.96). No association was found among mothers without obesity (aOR 0.97; 95% CI, 0.80-1.18). CONCLUSIONS: In a large, diverse sample, we found no evidence of an association between intrapartum exposure to sOT and odds of ADHD or ASD in either male or female offspring. Contrary to our hypothesis, among mothers with pre-pregnancy obesity, sOT exposure was associated with lower odds of child ADHD diagnosis.

Because the mechanotransduction by stromal stiffness stimulates the rupture and repair of the nuclear envelope in pancreatic progenitor cells, accumulated genomic aberrations are under selection in the tumor microenvironment. Analysis of cell growth, micronuclei, and γH2AX foci links to mechanotransduction pressure in vivo during serial orthotopic passages of mouse KrasLSL-G12D/+;Trp53flox/flox;Pdx1-Cre (KPC) cancer cells in the tumor and in migrating through the size-restricted 3-µm micropores. To search for pancreatic cancer cell of origin, analysis of single-cell data sets revealed that the extracellular matrix shapes an alternate route of acinar-ductal transdifferentiation of acinar cells into a central hub of elegantly restrained topoisomerase II α (TOP2A)-overexpressing cancer cells that spread out as unique cancer clusters with copy number amplifications in MYC-PTK2 (protein tyrosine kinase 2) locus and PIK3CA. High-PTK2 expression is associated with 171 differentially methylated CpG loci, 319 differentially expressed genes, and poor overall survival in patients with The Cancer Genome Atlas-PAAD. Abolished RGD-integrin signaling by disintegrin KG blocked the PTK2 phosphorylation, increased cancer apoptosis, decreased VAV1 expression, and prolonged overall survival in the KPC mice. Decreases of α-smooth muscle actin deposition in the CD248 knockout KPC mice remodel the tissue stroma and down-regulated TOP2A expression in the epithelium. In summary, stromal stiffness induces the onset of cells of origin of cancer by ectopic TOP2A expression, and the genomic amplification of MYC-PTK2 locus via alternative transdifferentiation of pancreatic progenitor cells is the vulnerability useful for disintegrin KG treatment against cells-of-origin cancer.

How genetic lesions drive cell transformation and whether they can be circumvented without compromising function of non-transformed cells are enduring questions in oncology. Here we show that in mature T cells-in which physiologic clonal proliferation is a cardinal feature- constitutive MYC transcription and Tsc1 loss in mice modeled aggressive human malignancy by reinforcing each other's oncogenic programs. This cooperation was supported by MYC-induced large neutral amino acid transporter chaperone SLC3A2 and dietary leucine, which in synergy with Tsc1 deletion overstimulated mTORC1 to promote mitochondrial fitness and MYC protein overexpression in a positive feedback circuit. A low leucine diet was therapeutic even in late-stage disease but did not hinder T cell immunity to infectious challenge, nor impede T cell transformation driven by constitutive nutrient mTORC1 signaling via Depdc5 loss. Thus, mTORC1 signaling hypersensitivity to leucine as an onco-nutrient enables an onco-circuit, decoupling pathologic from physiologic utilization of nutrient acquisition pathways.

Oranges contain many natural active chemicals, organic acids, and polysaccharides. Aging processing is commonly used to modify the color, quality, functional components, and stability of fruits. This study assesses the preparation of aging black oranges using various pre-treatments and solid fermentation. Oranges were aged for six weeks in fresh, non-blanching, blanching, and hot air-assisted aging cycle (AA) groups. The oranges' shrinkage ratio, color difference values, and soluble solids content changed significantly (p < 0.05). Principal component analysis indicated that aging fermentation treatment accelerated glycolysis and increased the ratio of reducing sugars. The enhanced browning can be associated with the oxidation of ascorbic acid (0.66-0.47 mg/g) and the formation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF) (0.09 mg/g). Furthermore, the presence of free polyphenols led to an increase in the total polyphenol and total flavonoid content. It also had a synergistic effect with 5-HMF in increasing the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl free radical-scavenging capacity and ferric ion-reducing antioxidant power (p < 0.05). AA had superior α-glucosidase inhibitory ability increasing from 67.31 to 80.48%. It also reduced the development time by 33%. Therefore, aging technology can enhance the bioactive compounds in oranges and provide a reference for future whole-fruit aging fermentation and health product creation.

(1) Background: Either pre-operative physical status or unstable hemodynamic changes has been reported to play a potential role in causing vital organ dysfunction. Therefore, we intended to investigate the impact of the American Society of Anesthesiologist (ASA) classification and intraoperative hemodynamic instability on non-surgical complications following orthopedic surgery. (2) Methods: We collected data on 6478 patients, with a mean age of 57.3 ± 16, who underwent orthopedic surgeries between 2018 and 2020. The ASA classification and hemodynamic data were obtained from an anesthesia database. Non-surgical complications were defined as a dysfunction of the vital organs. (3) Results: ASA III/IV caused significantly higher odds ratios (OR) of 17.49 and 40.96, respectively, than ASA I for developing non-surgical complications (p < 0.001). Non-surgical complications were correlated with a 20% reduction in systolic blood pressure (SBP), which was intraoperatively compared to the pre-operative baseline ((OR) = 1.38, p = 0.02). The risk of postoperative complications increased with longer durations of SBP < 100 mmHg, peaking at over 20 min ((OR) = 1.33, p = 0.34). (4) Conclusions: Extended intraoperative hypotension and ASA III/IV caused a significantly higher risk of adverse events occurring within the major organs. The maintenance of hemodynamic stability prevents non-surgical complications after orthopedic surgeries.

Volumetric muscle loss (VML), a severe muscle tissue loss from trauma or surgery, results in scarring, limited regeneration, and significant fibrosis, leading to lasting reductions in muscle mass and function. A promising approach for VML recovery involves restoring vascular and neural networks at the injury site, a process not extensively studied yet. Collagen hydrogels have been investigated as scaffolds for blood vessel formation due to their biocompatibility, but reconstructing blood vessels and guiding innervation at the injury site is still difficult. In this study, collagen hydrogels with varied densities of vessel-forming cells are implanted subcutaneously in mice, generating pre-vascularized hydrogels with diverse vessel densities (0-145 numbers/mm2) within a week. These hydrogels, after being transplanted into muscle injury sites, are assessed for muscle repair capabilities. Results showed that hydrogels with high microvessel densities, filling the wound area, effectively reconnected with host vasculature and neural networks, promoting neovascularization and muscle integration, and addressing about 63% of the VML.

Lower-limb wearable robots designed to assist people in everyday activities must reliably recover from any momentary confusion about what the user is doing. Such confusion might arise from momentary sensor failure, collision with an obstacle, losing track of gait due to an out-of-distribution stride, etc. Systems that infer a user's walking condition from angle measurements using Bayesian filters (e.g., extended Kalman filters) have been shown to accurately track gait across a range of activities. However, due to the fundamental problem structure and assumptions of Bayesian filter implementations, such estimators risk becoming 'lost' with little hope of a quick recovery. In this paper, we 1) introduce a Monte Carlo-based metric to quantify the robustness of pattern-tracking gait estimators, 2) propose strategies for improving tracking robustness, and 3) systematically evaluate them against this new metric using a publicly available gait biomechanics dataset. Our results, aggregating 2,700 trials of simulated walking of 10 able-bodied subjects under random perturbations, suggest that drastic improvements in robustness (from 8.9% to 99%) are possible using relatively simple modifications to the estimation process without noticeably degrading estimator accuracy.

As(V)-loaded granular activated carbon was regenerated through electrocoagulation assisted by elution with NaCl. Adsorption of As(V) by activated carbon was highest at pH 6, and subsequent desorption in water was highest at pH 11, followed by pH 3. Lower initial pH improved arsenic removal during electrocoagulation, NaCl concentration was insignificant, but removal increased with current density. Adding Fe(II) before electrocoagulation led to an improved removal efficiency up to a concentration of 30 mg/L. Regeneration of As(V)-loaded activated carbon increased with current density and time up to a maximum of 85%. An increase in NaCl concentration to 6000 mg/L further improved regeneration to 92%. Regeneration at a lower current density only dropped slightly from 54% to 51% when doubling activated carbon concentration, demonstrating excellent scalability. Repeated adsorption-desorption tests were performed, where 81% and 69% regeneration were obtained after four regenerations with NaCl concentrations of 6000 and 750 mg/L, respectively. NaCl concentration in the tested range did not influence electrocoagulation but improved regeneration through elution. The combination of electrocoagulation and elution facilitated a higher regeneration efficiency, meanwhile removing As(V) from the solution through adsorption on iron hydroxide. PRACTITIONER POINTS: As(V)-loaded activated carbon was regenerated by electrocoagulation with elution. Regeneration increased with regeneration time and current density up to 85%. Addition of 6000 mg/L NaCl further increased regeneration to 93%. Regeneration of 82% was achieved after four regenerations. NaCl did not affect electrocoagulation but improved regeneration through elution.

BACKGROUND: Patients with traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) often experience concurrent facial bone fractures. In 2021, a prediction model with 10 variables was published and precisely predicted concomitant facial fractures in TBI patients. Herein, external validation and simplification of this model was performed. METHODS: Traumatic brain injury patients treated at a major referral trauma center were retrospectively reviewed for 1 year. The original prediction model (published in 2021), which was developed from a rural level II trauma center, was applied for external validation. A new and simplified model from our level I trauma center was developed and backwardly validated by rural level II trauma center data. RESULTS: In total, 313 TBI patients were enrolled; 101 (32.3%) had concomitant facial fractures. When the previous prediction model was applied to the validation cohort, it achieved acceptable discrimination, with an area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) of 0.713 and good precision, with a Brier score of 0.083. A new and simplified model with 6 variables (age, tooth rupture, epistaxis, facial lesion, eye injury, and intracranial hemorrhage) was created with excellent discrimination (AUC = 0.836) and good precision (Brier score of 0.055). The backward validation of this new model also showed excellent discrimination in the cohort used to develop the original model (AUC = 0.875). CONCLUSION: The original model provides an acceptable and reproducible prediction of concomitant facial fractures among TBI patients. A simplified model with fewer variables and the same accuracy could be applied in the emergency department and at higher- and lower-level trauma centers.

The Taiwan Society of Cardiology (TSOC) and Taiwan Society of Plastic Surgery (TSPS) have collaborated to develop a joint consensus for the management of patients with advanced vascular wounds. The taskforce comprises experts including preventive cardiologists, interventionists, and cardiovascular and plastic surgeons. The consensus focuses on addressing the challenges in diagnosing, treating, and managing complex wounds; incorporates the perfusion evaluation and the advanced vascular wound care team; and highlights the importance of cross-disciplinary teamwork. The aim of this joint consensus is to manage patients with advanced vascular wounds and encourage the adoption of these guidelines by healthcare professionals to improve patient care and outcomes. The guidelines encompass a range of topics, including the definition of advanced vascular wounds, increased awareness, team structure, epidemiology, clinical presentation, medical treatment, endovascular intervention, vascular surgery, infection control, advanced wound management, and evaluation of treatment results. It also outlines a detailed protocol for assessing patients with lower leg wounds, provides guidance on consultation and referral processes, and offers recommendations for various wound care devices, dressings, and products. The 2024 TSOC/TSPS consensus for the management of patients with advanced vascular wounds serves as a catalyst for international collaboration, promoting knowledge exchange and facilitating advancements in the field of advanced vascular wound management. By providing a comprehensive and evidence-based approach, this consensus aims to contribute to improved patient care and outcomes globally.

BACKGROUND: Adolescence is an important period for the development of the possible self. It is also a time when depression is prevalent. The cognitive theory of depression proposes that a negative view of the future is a key feature of depression. Targeting these negative thoughts about the future during cognitive behavioural therapy may be helpful in depression. However, little is known about how adolescents envisage their future (i.e. possible) self, or if the content is associated with affect. The aim of this quantitative study is to describe how adolescents describe their 'possible self' and examine the relationship between the valence of the possible self and depression in adolescents. METHOD: Adolescents (n = 584) aged 13-18 years were recruited via opportunity sampling via their schools and completed measures of depression symptoms (the Mood and Feelings Questionnaire) and the 'possible self' (a variant of the 'I Will Be' task). Possible selves were coded for content and valence. RESULTS: Despite depression severity, the most common possible selves generated by adolescents were positive and described interpersonal roles. The valence of the possible self was associated with depression severity but only accounted for 3.4% of the variance in severity. CONCLUSION: The results support the cognitive model of depression. However, adolescents with elevated symptoms of depression were able to generate positive, possible selves and therefore may remain somewhat 'hopeful' about their future despite clinically significant depression symptoms. Future-oriented treatment approaches such as cognitive behavioural therapy that focus on changing unhelpful negative future thinking may not be appropriate for this population.

Skeletal muscle is the largest metabolic tissue responsible for systemic glucose handling. Glucose uptake into skeletal tissue is highly dynamic and delicately regulated, in part through the controlled expression and subcellular trafficking of multiple types of glucose transporters. Although the roles of GLUT4 in skeletal muscle metabolism are well established, the physiological significance of other, seemingly redundant, glucose transporters remain incompletely understood. Nonetheless, recent studies have shed light on the roles of several glucose transporters, such as GLUT1 and GLUT10, in skeletal muscle. Mice experiments suggest that GLUT10 could be a novel player in skeletal muscle metabolism in the context of mechanical overload, which is in line with the meta-analytical results of gene expression changes after resistance exercise in humans. Herein we discuss the knowns, unknowns, and implications of these recent findings.

We study optical frequency comb (OFC) generation using cascaded injection of semiconductor lasers in this work. The OFC generation system is operated in two cascaded optical injection stages. When a master laser optically injects into the first stage with proper injection power and frequency, period-one (P1) dynamics are invoked in an optically injected semiconductor laser of the first stage. Another semiconductor laser in the second stage is then optically injected by the P1 dynamics. With proper injection power adjusted in the second stage, the P1 dynamics are regenerated, and the semiconductor laser relaxation oscillations (ROs) become undamped so that subharmonic oscillations appear. Because a subharmonic oscillation frequency is half of an oscillation frequency of the P1 dynamics, extra optical frequency components appear in the middle of the adjacent optical frequency components of the P1 dynamics, thus signaling OFC generation. The OFC signals exhibit at least 15 comb lines, resulting in a bandwidth greater than 140 GHz. Microwave comb signals are obtained after photodetection, although the microwave linewidth is on the order of a few megahertz because of the semiconductor laser noise. Thus, we propose a cascaded injection-locking scheme to stabilize the P1 dynamics and OFC signals. We have demonstrated pure microwave generations with a linewidth of less than 3 Hz and low phase noise.

BACKGROUND: Direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs) outperform warfarin in vascular and bleeding events in atrial fibrillation (AF) patients. Yet, effects of DOACs on congestive heart failure (CHF) and Alzheimer's disease (AD) remain less explored. METHODS: Using the Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database, a nationwide retrospective cohort study was conducted. The study matched 5,683 non-valvular atrial fibrillation (NVAF) edoxaban patients with 11,366 warfarin patients, and 703 NVAF with cancer (NVAF-C) edoxaban patients with 1,406 warfarin patients. Vasular and non-vascular outcomes, with focuses on CHF and AD, were compared between the edoxaban and warfarin users. RESULTS: Edoxaban significantly lowered adjusted hazrad ratio (aHR) of all-cause mortality, hospitalization for gastrointestinal bleeding, and CHF (0.37, 0.74, and 0.26, respectively, in NVAF; 0.39, 0.67, and 0.31, respectively, in NVAF-C, all p < 0.05), compared to warfarin. Edoxaban was associated with significantly lower aHRs of acute myocardial infarction, peripheral artery disease, venous thromboembolism, pulmonary embolism, and AD (0.71, 0.48, 0.55, 0.20, and 0.66, respectively; all p < 0.05) in NVAF patients versus warfarin. However, edoxaban had higher aHR of hospitalized bleeding (1.19, p = 0.002) than warfarin in NVAF patients, but not in NVAF-C patients. CONCLUSIONS: Edoxaban demonstrated lowered CHF risks in both NVAF and NVAF-C patients, and reduced AD occurrence in NVAF patients versus warfarin. These findings advocate for edoxaban's use in AF cases. CLINICAL PERSPECTIVE: What Is New?: The study reveals that in patients with atrial fibrillation (AF), edoxaban, a direct oral anticoagulant (DOAC), demonstrates significant advantages over warfarin. Notably, edoxaban is associated with a reduced risk of congestive heart failure (CHF) and Alzheimer's disease (AD) when compared to warfarin.Clinical Implications?: These findings have important clinical implications. Edoxaban appears to be a superior anticoagulant choice for AF patients, as it lowers the risk of CHF and AD. This highlights the potential of edoxaban to improve patient outcomes and underscores its relevance for managing AF cases.

Tumors develop by invoking a supportive environment characterized by aberrant angiogenesis and infiltration of tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs). In a transgenic model of breast cancer, we found that TAMs localized to the tumor parenchyma and were smaller than mammary tissue macrophages. TAMs had low activity of the metabolic regulator mammalian/mechanistic target of rapamycin complex 1 (mTORC1), and depletion of negative regulator of mTORC1 signaling, tuberous sclerosis complex 1 (TSC1), in TAMs inhibited tumor growth in a manner independent of adaptive lymphocytes. Whereas wild-type TAMs exhibited inflammatory and angiogenic gene expression profiles, TSC1-deficient TAMs had a pro-resolving phenotype. TSC1-deficient TAMs relocated to a perivascular niche, depleted protein C receptor (PROCR)-expressing endovascular endothelial progenitor cells, and rectified the hyperpermeable blood vasculature, causing tumor tissue hypoxia and cancer cell death. TSC1-deficient TAMs were metabolically active and effectively eliminated PROCR-expressing endothelial cells in cell competition experiments. Thus, TAMs exhibit a TSC1-dependent mTORC1-low state, and increasing mTORC1 signaling promotes a pro-resolving state that suppresses tumor growth, defining an innate immune tumor suppression pathway that may be exploited for cancer immunotherapy.

Endozoicomonas are often predominant bacteria and prominently important in coral health. Their role in dimethylsulfoniopropionate (DMSP) degradation has been a subject of discussion for over a decade. A previous study found that Endozoicomonas degraded DMSP through the dddD pathway. This process releases dimethyl sulfide, which is vital for corals coping with thermal stress. However, little is known about the related gene regulation and metabolic abilities of DMSP metabolism in Endozoicomonadaceae. In this study, we isolated a novel Endozoicomonas DMSP degrader and observed a distinct DMSP metabolic trend in two phylogenetically close dddD-harboring Endozoicomonas species, confirmed genetically by comparative transcriptomic profiling and visualization of the change of DMSP stable isotopes in bacterial cells using nanoscale secondary ion spectrometry. Furthermore, we found that DMSP cleavage enzymes are ubiquitous in coral Endozoicomonas with a preference for having DddD lyase. We speculate that harboring DMSP degrading genes enables Endozoicomonas to successfully colonize various coral species across the globe.

Hemimyzon formosanus, a species of ray-finned fish, makes use of crescent-shaped abdominal suckers for adhering to irregular, rough, and slippery gravel in fast-flowing headwaters and minor tributaries. Bioinspired by the adhesion characteristics, two-dimensional non-close-packed colloidal crystals are self-assembled and serve as templates to pattern crescent-shaped shape memory polymer-based nanostructure arrays. By the manipulation of the configuration of nanosuckers through applying common solvent stimulations, the corresponding adhesion performances on glass, sandpaper, or even porcine kidney surfaces can be switched instantaneously and reversibly under ambient conditions. The biomimetic nanostructures indicate possible solutions to a variety of challenges, such as wound nursing, and so on.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to validate the previously reported association between delayed bladder repair and increased infection rates using the National Trauma Data Bank (NTDB). METHODS: Bladder injury patients with bladder repair in the NTDB from 2013 to 2015 were included. Propensity score matching (PSM) was used to compare mortality, infection rates, and hospital length of stay (LOS) between patients who underwent bladder repair within 24 h and those who underwent repair after 24 h. Linear regression and multivariate logistic regression analyses were also performed. RESULTS: A total of 1658 patients were included in the study. Patients who underwent bladder repair after 24 h had significantly higher infection rates (5.4% vs. 1.2%, p = 0.032) and longer hospital LOS (17.1 vs. 14.0 days, p = 0.032) compared to those who underwent repair within 24 h after a well-balanced 1:1 PSM (N = 166). Linear regression analysis showed a positive correlation between time to bladder repair and hospital LOS for patients who underwent repair after 24 h (B-value = 0.093, p = 0.034). Multivariate logistic regression analysis indicated that bladder repair after 24 h increased the risk of infection (odds = 3.162, p = 0.018). Subset analyses were performed on patients who underwent bladder repairs within 24 h and were used as a control group. These analyses showed that the time to bladder repair did not significantly worsen outcomes. CONCLUSIONS: Delayed bladder repair beyond 24 h increases the risk of infection and prolongs hospital stays. Timely diagnosis and surgical intervention remain crucial for minimizing complications in bladder injury patients.
