RESUMO

Cyanobacteria bloom and the secondary metabolites released by the microorganism are extremely harmful to aquatic animals, yet study on their adverse effects in zoobenthos is rare. Corbicula fluminea widely distributed in freshwater environment with algal blooms. It is a typical filter feeding zoobenthos that may be affected by the secondary metabolites of cyanobacteria due to its high filtering rate. In this study, C. fluminea was exposed to Microcystis aeruginosa exudates (MaE) for 96 h, which was obtained from 5 × 105 cells/mL and 2.5 × 106 cells/mL exponential stage M. aeruginosa culture solution that represented cyanobacteria cell density needs environmental risk precaution control and emergent control, respectively. The responses of C. fluminea critical organs to MaE were analyzed and evaluated based on histopathological sections, antitoxicity biomarkers, and organ function biomarkers. The results showed that all the organs underwent structural disorders, cell vacuolization, apoptosis, and necrosis, and the damage levels increased as MaE concentration increased. The detoxification and antioxidant defense systems biomarkers in each organ response to MaE exposure differently and the level of reaction improved when MaE concentration increased. The siphon rate and acetylcholinesterase activity showed that the filtration function decreased significantly as the MaE concentration increased. Increased activity of glutathione S-transferase and amylase in the digestive gland indicate that it is the major detoxification organ of C. fluminea. Increased vitellogenin concentration and enlarged oocytes in the gonad indicate that MaE may have an estrogenic effect on C. fluminea. This study demonstrates that cyanobacteria threat benthic bivalves by inducing oxidative stress, inhibiting filtering feeding system, and disturbing digestion system and reproduction potential of C. fluminea.

The pore-throat characteristics significantly affect the consolidated properties, such as the mechanical and permeability-related performance of the cementitious composites. By virtue of the nucleation and pore-infilling effects, graphene oxide (GO) has been proven as a great additive in reinforcing cement-based materials. However, the quantitative characterization reports of GO on the pore-throat connection are limited. This study applied advanced metal intrusion and backscattered electron (BSE) microscopy scanning technology to investigate the pore-throat connection characteristics of the cement waste rock backfill (CWRB) specimens before and after GO modification. The results show that the microscopic pore structure of CWRB is significantly improved by the GO nanosheets, manifested by a decrease in the total porosity up to 31.2%. With the assistance of the GO, the transfer among internal pores is from large equivalent pore size distribution to small equivalent pore size distribution. The fitting relationship between strength enhancement and pore reinforcement efficiency under different pore-throat characteristics reveals that the 1.70 µm pore-throat owns the highest correlation in the CWRB specimens, implying apply GO nanosheets to optimizing the pore-throat under this interval is most efficient. Overall, this research broadens our understanding of the pore-throat connection characteristics of CWRB and stimulates the potential application of GO in enhancing the mechanical properties and microstructure of CWRB.

Discovery of frequent superflares on active cool stars opened a new avenue in understanding the properties of eruptive events and their impact on exoplanetary environments. Solar data suggest that coronal mass ejections (CMEs) should be associated with superflares on active solar-like planet hosts and produce solar/stellar energetic particle (SEP/StEP) events. Here, we apply the 2D Particle Acceleration and Transport in the Heliosphere model to simulate the SEPs accelerated via CME-driven shocks from the Sun and young solar-like stars. We derive the scaling of SEP fluence and hardness of energy spectra with CME speed and associated flare energy. These results have crucial implications for the prebiotic chemistry and expected atmospheric biosignatures from young rocky exoplanets as well as the chemistry and isotopic composition of circumstellar disks around infant solar-like stars.

To implement a liquid crystal optical phased array (LC-OPA) on a practical free-space laser communication terminal, there are two essential parameters: insertion loss and the closed-loop bandwidth required to meet the dynamic linking condition of the acquisition-tracking-pointing sub-system. Real-time hardware platforms and deflection efficiency optimization algorithms have been suggested since the invention of LC-OPA. In this paper, the so-called ZYNQ platform, a field-programmable-gate-array-based heterogeneous system-on-chip (SoC), is utilized to keep real-time response and accelerate data generation, such as beam steering, beamforming, beam enhancement, etc. In addition, a novel, to the best of our knowledge, optimization algorithm is proposed on the concept of dimension reduction of the number of objective variables. After deploying on this heterogeneous SoC platform, numerical simulations and experimental results both verify that, compared to the conventional PC-based system, the integrated SoC platform offers 15.8 times faster iterative speed, a rapid convergence rate, and excellent robustness, yet with less usage of power, physical size, and monetary cost. The efficiency enhancement process costs only a few seconds at any angle, laying the foundation for practical in-line applications.

Low concentrations of pollutants in surface water challenge the assessment of chronic effects on human health. Human bone mesenchymal stem cells (hBMSCs) were employed as a sensitive and relevant in vitro model to evaluate the potential biological effects caused by mixtures of pollutants in surface water. Organic extracts of surface water collected from Hun River inhibited cell viability in a dose-dependent manner. Surface water extracts at noncytotoxic concentrations induced 533 to 1055 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in hBMSCs after 48 h of exposure. Total of 370 genes were commonly affected by surface water from different sites and accounted for 35-69% of DEGs impaired by individual sample. Pathways related to human diseases, genetic information processing and organismal systems were enriched based on DEGs. Interleukins (IL1B, IL6 and IL8) were affected and involved in most human diseases related pathways. The significantly downregulation of COL1A1 and the variation of rheumatoid arthritis pathway suggested that surface water potentially inhibited osteogenic differentiation of hBMSCs. Clustering analysis and principle component analysis with DEGs distinguish the surface water from tributary and mainstream. The crossing-species comparison of transcriptomic changes identified 923 and 2715 differentially expressed orthologs in hBMSCs and zebrafish, respectively. After the exposure ceased, the followed osteogenic and adipogenic differentiation in hBMSCs for 14 days were inhibited by the treatment of surface water during undifferentiated period, whereas the non-polar fraction exhibited stronger potency in affecting differentiation than the mid to polar fractions. hBMSCs, combining unsupervised transcriptomic technique and specific endpoints test, are promising in screening the health effects of environmental mixtures in surface water.
