RESUMO

In this Letter, a novel, to the best of our knowledge, vertical directional coupling waveguide grating (VDCWG) architecture is proposed to increase the length of waveguide grating antennas for large aperture on-chip optical phased arrays (OPAs). In this new architecture, the grating emission strength is engineered by the vertical directional coupler, which provides additional degrees of design freedom. Theoretical analysis and numerical simulation show that the VDCWG can adjust the grating strength in the range of more than two orders of magnitude, corresponding to an effective grating length more than a centimeter. For proof-of-concept, a VDCWG antenna with a length of 1.5 mm is experimentally demonstrated. The grating strength is measured to be 0.17 mm-1, and the far-field divergence angle is 0.061°. A 16-channel OPA is also developed based on the proposed VDCWG, which proves the potential of the new architecture for large aperture OPAs.

RESUMO

Operationally simple and generally applicable arene nitration with cheap and easily accessible chemicals has been a long-sought transformation in the synthetic organic community. In this work, we realized this goal with nontoxic and inexpensive Fe(NO3)3·9H2O as the nitro source and easily recyclable solvent hexafluoroisopropanol as the promotor via a network of hydrogen-bonding interactions. As a result of the relative mildness and high reliability of this protocol, late-stage nitration of various highly functionalized natural products and commercially available drugs was realized.

RESUMO

Spider mites belonging to the genus Tetranychus infest many important agricultural crops in both fields and greenhouses worldwide and are diversified in their host plant range. How spider mites perceive their suitable host plants remains not completely clear. Here, through two-host-choice designs (bean vs. tomato, and bean vs. eggplant), we tested the efficacies of the olfactory and gustatory systems of five spider mite species (T. urticae, T. truncatus, T. pueraricola, T. piercei, and T. evansi), which differ in host plant range in sensing their suitable host plant, by Y-tube olfactometer and two-choice disc experiments. We found that spider mites cannot locate their suitable host plants by volatile odours from a long distance, but they can use olfactory sensation in combination with gustatory sensation to select suitable host plants at a short distance. Highly polyphagous species displayed strong sensitivity in sensing suitable host plants rather than the lowered sensitivity we expected. Intriguingly, our principal component analyses (PCAs) showed that the similarity among five spider mite species in the performance of perceiving suitable host plants was highly correlated with their relative phylogenetic relationships, suggesting a close relationship between the chemosensing system and the speciation of spider mites. Our results highlight the necessity of further work on the chemosensing system in relation to host plant range and speciation of spider mites.

RESUMO

Background: Microwave ablation (MWA) technology has been applied to the treatment of papillary thyroid microcarcinoma (PTMC); however, its use as an alternative to conventional open surgery (OS) remains controversial, because it belongs to non-tumor radical treatment. Our article sought to compare the efficacy and safety of MWA and OS in the treatment of PTMC. Methods: We searched seven databases for studies evaluating the treatment of patients with PTMC using MWA as intervention group and OS as control group, the main outcome contained intra-operative, post-operative and follow-up outcomes. Review Manager 5.4 was used to estimate the effects of the results of the included articles and Cochrane Risk of Bias 2.0 was used to assess the risk of bias. The data were pooled to calculate the mean differences (MD) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for the continuous data and the odds ratio (OR) with 95% CIs for the dichotomous data. Results: A total of 13 studies, comprising 1,088 and 1,081 patients in the MWA and OS groups, respectively, were identified that compared the results of MWA to OS in the treatment of PTMC. All of the articles were at low risk of bias. There were no differences in terms of the recurrence rate (OR =0.80, 95% CI: 0.37 to 1.77; P=0.59) or lymph node metastasis (OR =0.71, 95% CI: 0.26 to 1.95; P=0.51) between the 2 groups. However, compared to the OS group, the MWA group had a shorter operation time (MD =-44.85, 95% CI: 5.73 to 20.68; P<0.00001), less intra-operative blood loss (MD =-23.37, 95% CI: -29.57 to -17.17; P<0.00001), a smaller surgical incision (MD =-47.04, 95% CI: -81.93 to -12.14; P=0.008), a shorter postoperative hospital stay (MD =-4.19, 95% CI: -5.46 to -2.92; P<0.00001), lower hospitalization expenses (MD =-85.65, 95% CI: -133.86 to -37.45; P<0.00001), and fewer complications (OR =0.23, 95% CI: 0.16 to 0.33; P<0.00001). Conclusions: This meta-analysis suggests that MWA is better than OS at treating PTMC in terms of both intra-operative and post-operative outcomes. Due to the quality and number of the included studies, the long-term effects and suitability of MWA in the treatment of PTMC need to be further studied.

RESUMO

In recent years, the unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) remote sensing technology has been widely used in the planning, design and maintenance of urban distributed photovoltaic arrays (UDPA). However, the existing studies rarely concern the UAV swarm scheduling problem when applied to remoting sensing in UDPA maintenance. In this study, a novel scheduling model and algorithm for UAV swarm remote sensing in UDPA maintenance are developed. Firstly, the UAV swarm scheduling tasks in UDPA maintenance are described as a large-scale global optimization (LSGO) problem, in which the constraints are defined as penalty functions. Secondly, an adaptive multiple variable-grouping optimization strategy including adaptive random grouping, UAV grouping and task grouping is developed. Finally, a novel evolutionary algorithm, namely cooperatively coevolving particle swarm optimization with adaptive multiple variable-grouping and context vector crossover/mutation strategies (CCPSO-mg-cvcm), is developed in order to effectively optimize the aforementioned UAV swarm scheduling model. The results of the case study show that the developed CCPSO-mg-cvcm significantly outperforms the existing algorithms, and the UAV swarm remote sensing in large-scale UDPA maintenance can be optimally scheduled by the developed methodology.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Stegobium paniceum (Coleoptera, Anobiidae) is an important pest of stored products causing severe damage to dried Chinese medicinal plant materials (CMPMs). Plant volatiles play an important role in host-searching of insects. The olfactory responses of S. paniceum to the most abundant volatile components of some drugstore attractant CMPMs such as Panax notoginseng, Angelica sinensis, Gastrodia elata and Peucedanum praeruptorum, namely falcarinol, 3-n-butylphthalide, p-cresol and ß-pinene, respectively, were studied by electroantennography (EAG) and behavioural bioassays in six- and four-arm olfactometers. RESULTS: EAG recordings showed that male and female antennae are able to perceive the test compounds in a wide range of concentrations and in a dose-dependent manner. Moreover, for each dose of different compounds tested, no significant differences were found between the mean male and female EAG responses. In six-arm olfactometer bioassays, S. paniceum exhibited positive responses to falcarinol, 3-n-butylphthalide, p-cresol and ß-pinene at doses of 1, 10, 100, 500 and 1000 µg. The most attractive dose was 500 µg for falcarinol, 100 µg for 3-n-butylphthalide, 500 µg for p-cresol and 1000 µg for ß-pinene. Olfactory preferences of S. paniceum, based on comparison of these four compounds at their optimally attractive concentrations in a four-arm olfactometer, were 3-n-butylphthalide > p-cresol > falcarinol > ß-pinene. CONCLUSION: The results indicated that the four volatiles of CMPMs are perceived by the peripheral olfactory system of S. paniceum adults and are able to individually elicit a positive chemotaxis in S. paniceum adults confirming the role of chemical cues in host-plant detection and selection of this pest. Further field studies are needed to evaluate the potential of the attractive compounds identified in this study, particularly 3-n-butylphthalide, to be applied as a novel monitoring and control tool against this storage-beetle pest. © 2022 The Authors. RESUMO

The plant root is an important storage organ that stores indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) from the apical meristem, as well as nitrogen, which is obtained from the external environment. IAA and nitrogen act as signaling molecules that promote root growth to obtain further resources. Fluctuations in the distribution of nitrogen in the soil environment induce plants to develop a set of strategies that effectively improve nitrogen use efficiency. Auxin integrates the information regarding the nitrate status inside and outside the plant body to reasonably distribute resources and sustainably construct the plant root system. In this review, we focus on the main factors involved in the process of nitrate- and auxin-mediated regulation of root structure to better understand how the root system integrates the internal and external information and how this information is utilized to modify the root system architecture.

RESUMO

An efficient iodine-imine synergistic promoted Povarov-type multicomponent reaction was reported for the synthesis of a practical 2,2'-biquinoline scaffold. The tandem annulation has reconciled iodination, Kornblum oxidation, and Povarov aromatization, where the methyl group of the methyl azaarenes represents uniquely reactive input in the Povarov reaction. This method has broad substrate scope and mild conditions. Furthermore, these 2,2'-biquinoline derivatives had been directly used as bidentate ligands in metal-catalyzed reactions.

RESUMO

Previous studies have shown that humans have a left spatial attention bias in cognition and behaviour. However, whether there exists a leftward perception bias of gaze direction has not been investigated. To address this gap, we conducted three behavioural experiments using a forced-choice gaze direction judgment task. The point of subjective equality (PSE) was employed to measure whether there was a leftward perception bias of gaze direction, and if there was, whether this bias was modulated by face emotion. The results of experiment 1 showed that the PSE of fearful faces was significantly positive as compared to zero and this effect was not found in angry, happy, and neutral faces, indicating that participants were more likely to judge the gaze direction of fearful faces as directed to their left-side space, namely a leftward perception bias. With the response keys counterbalanced between participants, experiment 2a replicated the findings in experiment 1. To further investigate whether the gaze direction perception variation was contributed by emotional or low-level features of faces, experiment 2b and 3 used inverted faces and inverted eyes, respectively. The results revealed similar leftward perception biases of gaze direction in all types of faces, indicating that gaze direction perception was biased by emotional information in faces rather than low-level facial features. Overall, our study demonstrates that there a fear-specific leftward perception bias in processing gaze direction. These findings shed new light on the cerebral lateralization in humans.

RESUMO

Dissolving microneedles (MNs) have been widely studied for their applications in effective transdermal drug delivery due to their ability to dissolve within the skin. This study details the first reported successful preparation of novel dissolving MNs using Bletilla striata polysaccharide (BSP), a natural glucomannan material, and investigates the potential for using such MNs as a transdermal drug delivery vector. The prepared dissolving Bletilla striata polysaccharide microneedles (BMNs) had excellent moldability and were easily detached from the mold. Texture analysis and histological examination confirmed BMNs were strong enough to insert into the skin. The skin appeared slight irritation after removal of BMNs, but recovered within 24 h. Confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) studies indicated that rhodamine B (RB) loaded in BMNs (as a model drug) could be gradually released, along with the dissolution of BSP in vivo, and then diffused from the insertion site to the periphery. Furthermore, we found that the RB-loaded BMNs could provide sustained drug release via the in vitro Franz cell experiment. These findings demonstrate that novel dissolving BMNs can be easily-manufactured, loaded with drug, and inserted into the skin for drug delivery.

RESUMO

Background and Purpose:Polygonum orientale L. (family: Polygonaceae), named Hongcao in China, is a Traditional Chinese Medicinal and has long been used for rheumatic arthralgia and rheumatoid arthritis. However, no pharmacological and mechanism study to confirm these clinic effects have been published. In this investigation, the anti-inflammatory, analgesic effects and representative active ingredient compounds of P. orientale have been studied. Methods: Dried small pieces of the stems and leaves of P. orientale were decocted with water and partitioned successively to obtain ethyl acetate and ethyl ether extract of P. orientale (POEa and POEe). Chemical compositions of them were analyzed by UPLC-Q-Exactive HRMS. Anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects of POEa and POEe were evaluated using xylene induced ear edema, carrageenan induced paw edema, Freunds' complete adjuvant induced arthritis, and formaldehyde induced pain in rat. Their mechanisms of anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects were also studied via assays of TNF-α, IL-1ß, IL-6, and PGE2 in serum. Results: UPLC-Q-Exactive HRMS analysis showed that POEa and POEe mainly contained flavonoids including orientin, isoorientin, vitexin, luteolin, and quercetin. Furthermore, anti-inflammatory effects of POEa and POEe were evident in xylene induced ear edema. The paw edema in Freund's complete adjuvant and carrageenan were significantly (P < 0.05, 0.01) inhibited by POEa (5, 7.5 g/kg). POEe (7.5 g/kg) was significantly (P < 0.05, 0.01) inhibited Freunds' complete adjuvant induced paw edema and cotton pellet induced granuloma formation. Similarly, POEe significantly (P < 0.05, 0.01) inhibited the pain sensation in acetic acid induced writhing test. POEa (5, 7.5 g/kg) significantly (P < 0.05, 0.01) inhibited formaldehyde induced pain in both phases. POEa (7.5 g/kg) markedly (P < 0.05) prolonged the latency period of hot plate test after 30 and 60 min. The concentrations of TNF-α, IL-1ß, IL-6, and PGE2 were significantly (P < 0.01) decreased by POEa (3.75, 5 g/kg). Conclusion: POEa and POEe have anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects, which was mainly relevant to the presence of flavonoids, including orientin, isoorientin, vitexin, luteolin, and quercetin. The mechanism of anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects of POEa may be to decrease the concentrations of TNF-α, IL-1ß, IL-6, and PGE2 in serum.

RESUMO

In this article, currently used feedback control algorithms used in the polarization controller, including a simulated annealing algorithm and a gradient algorithm, are analyzed. On this basis, a new method of polarization control feedback algorithm based on a fast locating algorithm is proposed to solve the defects of the original algorithm, such as poor convergence and an extensive time consuming search. It can reduce convergence time and improve the response speed of the polarization controllers. This new endless polarization control algorithm utilizing a four-plate polarization controller is proposed and demonstrated. The results have shown that the response time of the polarization controller is less than 1 ms. The control of polarization is achieved and the output polarization state is stable, while the light intensity fluctuated less than 2%, which can run endless resets freely.
