RESUMO

Ion exchange is a powerful method to access metastable materials with advanced functionalities for energy storage applications. However, high concentrations and unfavourably large excesses of lithium are always used for synthesizing lithium cathodes from parent sodium material, and the reaction pathways remain elusive. Here, using layered oxides as model materials, we demonstrate that vacancy level and its corresponding lithium preference are critical in determining the accessible and inaccessible ion exchange pathways. Taking advantage of the strong lithium preference at the right vacancy level, we establish predictive compositional and structural evolution at extremely dilute and low excess lithium based on the phase equilibrium between Li0.94CoO2 and Na0.48CoO2. Such phase separation behaviour is general in both surface reaction-limited and diffusion-limited exchange conditions and is accomplished with the charge redistribution on transition metals. Guided by this understanding, we demonstrate the synthesis of NayCoO2 from the parent LixCoO2 and the synthesis of Li0.94CoO2 from NayCoO2 at 1-1,000 Li/Na (molar ratio) with an electrochemical assisted ion exchange method by mitigating the kinetic barriers. Our study opens new opportunities for ion exchange in predictive synthesis and separation applications.

RESUMO

High-entropy semiconductors are now an important class of materials widely investigated for thermoelectric applications. Understanding the impact of chemical and structural heterogeneity on transport properties in these compositionally complex systems is essential for thermoelectric design. In this work, we uncover the polar domain structures in the high-entropy PbGeSnSe1.5Te1.5 system and assess their impact on thermoelectric properties. We found that polar domains induced by crystal symmetry breaking give rise to well-structured alternating strain fields. These fields effectively disrupt phonon propagation and suppress the thermal conductivity. We demonstrate that the polar domain structures can be modulated by tuning crystal symmetry through entropy engineering in PbGeSnAgxSbxSe1.5+xTe1.5+x. Incremental increases in the entropy enhance the crystal symmetry of the system, which suppresses domain formation and loses its efficacy in suppressing phonon propagation. As a result, the room-temperature lattice thermal conductivity increases from κL = 0.63 Wm-1 K-1 (x = 0) to 0.79 Wm-1 K-1 (x = 0.10). In the meantime, the increase in crystal symmetry, however, leads to enhanced valley degeneracy and improves the weighted mobility from µw = 29.6 cm2 V-1 s-1 (x = 0) to 35.8 cm2 V-1 s-1 (x = 0.10). As such, optimal thermoelectric performance can be achieved through entropy engineering by balancing weighted mobility and lattice thermal conductivity. This work, for the first time, studies the impact of polar domain structures on thermoelectric properties, and the developed understanding of the intricate interplay between crystal symmetry, polar domains, and transport properties, along with the impact of entropy control, provides valuable insights into designing GeTe-based high-entropy thermoelectrics.

RESUMO

Microplastics (MPs) pollution is a growing global concern due to its potential threat to human health, particularly concerning fetal health. Nevertheless, few studies have examined the sources of fetal MPs exposure and its impact on fetal development. In this study, MPs levels in maternal amniotic fluid (AF) and their associations with measures of fetal growth were investigated. Specifically, 40 human AF samples were collected to determine the presence and characteristics of MPs using laser direct infrared (LD-IR) spectroscopy. MPs were found in 32 out of 40 AF samples, with an average abundance of 2.01 ± 4.19 particles/g. Polyethylene (PE, 38.80 %) and chlorinated polyethylene (CPE, 26.98 %) were the most prevalent polymers. The majority of MPs (87.56 %) were 20-100 µm in size, and fragments (71.23 %) evidently prevailed in morphology. Additionally, a questionnaire was designed to explore the associations between MPs levels in the AF and maternal dietary habits, aiming at unveiling the potential sources of MPs in AF. The MPs levels in the AF were positively associated with the frequency of seafood consumption (r = 0.781, P < 0.001) and bottled water intake (r = 0.386, P = 0.014). Moreover, the associations between MPs levels in maternal AF and measures of fetal growth were evaluated. The abundance of total MPs in maternal AF were significantly negatively associated with gestational age (ß = -0.44, 95 % CI, -0.83, -0.05). This study confirms the presence of MPs in human AF and provides compelling evidence linking them to gestational age, while highlighting the potential risks associated with dietary habits. These findings underscore the need for further investigation into the mechanisms of MPs transmission from mother to fetus and the potential health implications during fetal development, offering valuable insights for future policies aimed at safeguarding maternal and fetal health.

RESUMO

Utilization of in situ/operando methods with broad beams and localized probes has accelerated our understanding of fluid-surface interactions in recent decades. The closed-cell microchips based on silicon nitride (SiNx) are widely used as "nanoscale reactors" inside the high-vacuum electron microscopes. However, the field has been stalled by the high background scattering from encapsulation (typically ~100 nanometers) that severely limits the figures of merit for in situ performance. This adverse effect is particularly notorious for gas cell as the sealing membranes dominate the overall scattering, thereby blurring any meaningful signals and limiting the resolution. Herein, we show that by adopting the back-supporting strategy, encapsulating membrane can be reduced substantially, down to ~10 nanometers while maintaining structural resiliency. The systematic gas cell work demonstrates advantages in figures of merit for hitherto the highest spatial resolution and spectral visibility. Furthermore, this strategy can be broadly adopted into other types of microchips, thus having broader impact beyond the in situ/operando fields.

RESUMO

This study aimed to investigate the effects of different proportions (0%, 5%, 7.5%, and 10%) of steel slag (SS) on humification and bacterial community characteristics during phosphate-amended composting of municipal sludge. Compared with adding KH2PO4 alone, co-adding SS significantly promoted the temperature, pH, nitrification, and critical enzyme activities (polyphenol oxidase, cellulase, laccase); especially organic matter (OM) degradation rate (25.5%) and humification degree (1.8) were highest in the 5%-SS treatment. Excitation-emission matrix-parallel factor confirmed that co-adding SS could promote the conversion of protein-like substances or microbial by-products into humic-like substances. Furthermore, adding 5%-SS significantly improved the relative abundances of Actinobacteria, Firmicutes and the genes related to carbohydrate and amino acid metabolism, and enhanced the interactions of bacterial community in stability and complexity. The partial least squares path model indicated that OM was the primary factor affecting humification. These results provided a promising strategy to optimize composting of municipal sludge via SS.

RESUMO

Calcium carbonate (CaCO3), the most abundant biogenic mineral on earth, plays a crucial role in various fields such as hydrosphere, biosphere, and climate regulation. Of the four polymorphs, calcite, aragonite, vaterite, and amorphous CaCO3, vaterite is the most enigmatic one due to an ongoing debate regarding its structure that has persisted for nearly a century. In this work, based on systematic transmission electron microscopy characterizations, crystallographic analysis and machine learning aided molecular dynamics simulations with ab initio accuracy, we reveal that vaterite can be regarded as a polytypic structure. The basic phase has a monoclinic lattice possessing pseudohexagonal symmetry. Direct imaging and atomic-scale simulations provide evidence that a single grain of vaterite can contain three orientation variants. Additionally, we find that vaterite undergoes a second-order phase transition with a critical point of ~190 K. These atomic scale insights provide a comprehensive understanding of the structure of vaterite and offer advanced perspectives on the biomineralization process of calcium carbonate.

RESUMO

Polymeric spherulites are typically formed by melt crystallization: spherulitic growth in solution is rare and requires complex polymers and dilute solutions. Here, we report the mild and unique formation of luminescent spherulites at room temperature via the simple molecule benzene-1,4-dithiol (BDT). Specifically, BDT polymerized into oligomers (PBDT) via disulfide bonds and assembled into uniform supramolecular nanoparticles in aqueous buffer; these nanoparticles were then dissolved back into PBDT in a good solvent (i.e., dimethylformamide) and underwent chain elongation to form spherulites (rPBDT) in 10 min. The spherulite geometry was modulated by changing the PBDT concentration and reaction time. Due to the step-growth polymerization and reorganization of PBDT, these spherulites not only exhibited robust structure but also showed broad clusterization-triggered emission. The biocompatibility and efficient cellular uptake of the spherulites further underscore their value as traceable drug carriers. This system provides a new pathway for designing versatile superstructures with value for hierarchical assembly of small molecules into a complicated biological system.

RESUMO

Thin films of Er2O3 films were grown by atomic layer deposition using the Er precursor tris(1-(dimethylamino)-3,3-dimethylbut-1-en-2-olate)erbium(III) (Er(L1)3), with water as the co-reactant. Saturative, self-limited growth was observed at a substrate temperature of 200 °C for pulse lengths of ≥4.0 s for Er(L1)3 and ≥0.2 s for water. An ALD window was observed from 175 to 225 °C with a growth rate of about 0.25 Å per cycle. Er2O3 films grown at 200 °C on Si(100) and SiO2 substrates with a thickness of 33 nm had root mean square surface roughnesses of 1.75 and 0.75 nm, respectively. Grazing incidence X-ray diffraction patterns showed that the films were composed of polycrystalline Er2O3 at all deposition temperatures on Si(100) and SiO2 substrates. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy revealed stoichiometric Er2O3, with carbon and nitrogen levels below the detection limits after argon ion sputtering to remove surface impurities. Transmission electron microscopy studies of Er2O3 film growth in nanoscale trenches (aspect ratio = 10) demonstrated conformal coverage.

RESUMO

Selective area epitaxy is a promising approach to define nanowire networks for topological quantum computing. However, it is challenging to concurrently engineer nanowire morphology, for carrier confinement, and precision doping, to tune carrier density. We report a strategy to promote Si dopant incorporation and suppress dopant diffusion in remote doped InGaAs nanowires templated by GaAs nanomembrane networks. Growth of a dilute AlGaAs layer following doping of the GaAs nanomembrane induces incorporation of Si that otherwise segregates to the growth surface, enabling precise control of the spacing between the Si donors and the undoped InGaAs channel; a simple model captures the influence of Al on the Si incorporation rate. Finite element modeling confirms that a high electron density is produced in the channel.

RESUMO

Nanoparticles with high-index facets are intriguing because such facets can lend the structure useful functionality, including enhanced catalytic performance and wide-ranging optical tunability. Ligand-free solid-state syntheses of high index-facet nanoparticles, through an alloying-dealloying process with foreign volatile metals, are attractive owing to their materials generality and high yields. However, the role of foreign atoms in stabilizing the high-index facets and the dynamic nature of the transformation including the coarsening and facet regulation process are still poorly understood. Herein, the transformation of Pt salts to spherical seeds and then to tetrahexahedra, is studied in situ via gas-cell transmission electron microscopy. The dynamic behaviors of the alloying and dealloying process, which involves the coarsening of nanoparticles and consequent facet regulation stage are captured in the real time with a nanoscale spatial resolution. Based on additional direct evidence obtained using atom probe tomography and density functional theory calculations, the underlying mechanisms of the alloying-dealloying process are uncovered, which will facilitate broader explorations of high-index facet nanoparticle synthesis.

RESUMO

The application of polymer materials in sculpture art creation is extensive and plays a significant role in the development of sculpture art. This article aims to systematically explore the application of polymer materials in contemporary sculpture art creation. The research comprehensively applies various techniques such as literature research, data comparison, and case analysis to explore in detail the ways, methods, and paths of polymer materials employed in the shaping, decoration, and protection of sculptural artworks. First, the article analyzes three methods of shaping sculpture artworks with polymer materials (casting, printing, and constructing). Secondly, it explores two techniques of using polymer materials to adorn sculpture artworks (coloring and imitating texture); then it discusses the significant approach of using polymer materials to protect sculptural artworks (protective spray film). Finally, the research identifies the merits and demerits of using polymer materials in contemporary sculpture art creation. The findings of this study are expected to enrich the effective application of polymer materials in contemporary sculpture art creation and offer novel techniques and ideas for contemporary sculpture art creators.

RESUMO

The carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide electroreduction reactions, when powered using low-carbon electricity, offer pathways to the decarbonization of chemical manufacture1,2. Copper (Cu) is relied on today for carbon-carbon coupling, in which it produces mixtures of more than ten C2+ chemicals3-6: a long-standing challenge lies in achieving selectivity to a single principal C2+ product7-9. Acetate is one such C2 compound on the path to the large but fossil-derived acetic acid market. Here we pursued dispersing a low concentration of Cu atoms in a host metal to favour the stabilization of ketenes10-chemical intermediates that are bound in monodentate fashion to the electrocatalyst. We synthesize Cu-in-Ag dilute (about 1 atomic per cent of Cu) alloy materials that we find to be highly selective for acetate electrosynthesis from CO at high *CO coverage, implemented at 10 atm pressure. Operando X-ray absorption spectroscopy indicates in situ-generated Cu clusters consisting of <4 atoms as active sites. We report a 12:1 ratio, an order of magnitude increase compared to the best previous reports, in the selectivity for acetate relative to all other products observed from the carbon monoxide electroreduction reaction. Combining catalyst design and reactor engineering, we achieve a CO-to-acetate Faradaic efficiency of 91% and report a Faradaic efficiency of 85% with an 820-h operating time. High selectivity benefits energy efficiency and downstream separation across all carbon-based electrochemical transformations, highlighting the importance of maximizing the Faradaic efficiency towards a single C2+ product11.

RESUMO

Entropy-engineered materials are garnering considerable attention owing to their excellent mechanical and transport properties, such as their high thermoelectric performance. However, understanding the effect of entropy on thermoelectrics remains a challenge. In this study, we used the PbGeSnCdxTe3+x family as a model system to systematically investigate the impact of entropy engineering on its crystal structure, microstructure evolution, and transport behavior. We observed that PbGeSnTe3 crystallizes in a rhombohedral structure at room temperature with complex domain structures and transforms into a high-temperature cubic structure at ∼373 K. By alloying CdTe with PbGeSnTe3, the increased configurational entropy lowers the phase-transition temperature and stabilizes PbGeSnCdxTe3+x in the cubic structure at room temperature, and the domain structures vanish accordingly. The high-entropy effect results in increased atomic disorder and consequently a low lattice thermal conductivity of 0.76 W m-1 K-1 in the material owing to enhanced phonon scattering. Notably, the increased crystal symmetry is conducive to band convergence, which results in a high-power factor of 22.4 µW cm-1 K-1. As a collective consequence of these factors, a maximum ZT of 1.63 at 875 K and an average ZT of 1.02 in the temperature range of 300-875 K were obtained for PbGeSnCd0.08Te3.08. This study highlights that the high-entropy effect can induce a complex microstructure and band structure evolution in materials, which offers a new route for the search for high-performance thermoelectrics in entropy-engineered materials.

RESUMO

Microalgae are a large group of organisms that can produce various useful substances through photosynthesis. Microalgae need to be genetically modified at the molecular level to become "Chassis Cells" for food, medicine, energy, and environmental protection and, consequently, obtain benefits from microalgae resources. Insertional mutagenesis of microalgae using transposons is a practical possibility for understanding the function of microalgae genes. Theoretical and technical support is provided in this manuscript for applying transposons to microalgae gene function by summarizing the sequencing method of transposon insertion sites.

RESUMO

Hollow metal chalcogenide nanoparticles are widely applicable in environmental and energy-related processes. Herein, we synthesized such particles with large compositional and morphological diversity by combining scanning probe block copolymer lithography with a Kirkendall effect-based sulfidation process. We explored the influence of temperature-dependent diffusion kinetics, elemental composition and miscibility, and phase boundaries on the resulting particle morphologies. Specifically, CoNi alloys form single-shell sulfides for the synthetic conditions explored because Co and Ni exhibit similar diffusion rates, while CuNi alloys form sulfides with various types of morphologies (yolk-shell, double-shell, and single-shell) because Cu and Ni have different diffusion rates. In contrast, Co-Cu heterodimers form hollow heterostructured sulfides with varying void numbers and locations depending on synthesis temperature and phase boundary. At higher temperatures, the increased miscibility of CoS2 and CuS makes it energetically favorable for the heterostructure to adopt a single alloy shell morphology, which is rationalized using density functional theory-based calculations.

RESUMO

Acid-pretreated pistachio shells were used as carbon sources to investigate the effects of carbon source dosage on simultaneous nitrogen and phosphorus removal under different carbon/nitrogen (C/N) ratios (7, 9, and 11). Results showed that C/N was positively correlated with mixed liquor suspended solids (MLSS) (R2 = 0.998, p < 0.01) and f value (R2 = 0.975, p < 0.05). Moreover, it was negatively correlated with the sludge volume index (SVI) (R2 =  - 0.959, p < 0.05). C/N was also significantly negatively related to chemical oxygen demand removal rate (R2 =  - 0.986, p < 0.05) and positively related to ammonia nitrogen (NH4+-N), total nitrogen (TN), and total phosphorus (TP) removal rate (p < 0.05), the correlation coefficients were 0.992, 0.990 and 0.994, respectively. In the reactor with C/N of 11, the MLSS concentration and f value were the highest, the SVI was the lowest, and the removal efficiencies of NH4+-N (85.49 % ± 1.96 %), TN (84.19 % ± 1.42 %) and TP (94.10 % ± 1.67 %) were the highest. Furthermore, the relative abundance of denitrifying bacteria was the highest in the reactor. The abundance of nitrifying bacteria and phosphorus-removal bacteria was also relatively high.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Mosquito-borne diseases threaten human health, but mosquito control faces various challenges, such as resistance to chemical insecticides. Thus, there is an urgent need for more effective and environment-friendly control agents. Capsaicin can downregulate the mTOR signaling pathway of tumor cells. The TOR signaling pathway can mediate the expression of vitellogenin (Vg) to regulate the fecundity of insects. Whether capsaicin has the potential to inhibit fecundity of mosquitoes by regulating TOR pathway and Vg expression is currently unclear. METHODS: Anopheles stephensi were fed with blood of mice administered capsaicin by gavage or sugar containing capsaicin followed by a blood feeding with normal mice. Then, the engorged female mosquitoes were tubed individually and underwent oviposition. The eggs and individuals in the subsequent development stages, including larvae, pupae, and emerging adults, were counted and compared between the capsaicin treatment and control groups. Additionally, total RNA and protein were extracted from the engorged mosquitoes at 24 h post blood feeding. Real-time PCR and western blot were performed to detect the transcriptional level and protein expression of the key fecundity-related molecules of mosquitoes. Finally, TOR signaling pathway was inhibited via rapamycin treatment, and changes in fecundity and the key molecule transcription and protein expression levels were examined to verify the role of TOR signaling pathway in the effect of capsaicin on mosquito fecundity. RESULTS: The laid and total eggs (laid eggs plus retained eggs) of An. stephensi were significantly reduced by feeding on the blood of capsaicin-treated mice (P < 0.01) or capsaicin-containing sugar (P < 0.01) compared with those in the control group. Moreover, the transcription and protein expression or phosphorylation levels of fecundity-related molecules, such as Akt, TOR, S6K, and Vg, were significantly decreased by capsaicin treatment. However, the effects disappeared between control group and CAP group after the TOR signaling pathway was inhibited by rapamycin. CONCLUSIONS: Capsaicin can decrease the fecundity of An. stephensi by inhibiting the TOR signaling pathway. These data can help us to not only understand the effect of capsaicin on the reproductive ability of An. stephensi and its underlying mechanism, but also develop new efficient, safe, and pollution-free mosquito vector control agents.
