RESUMO

Lagerstroemia indica is an important commercial tree known for the ornamental value. In this study, the complete chloroplast genome sequence of Lagerstroemia indica "Pink Velour" (Lagerstroemia "Pink Velour") was 152,174 bp in length with a GC content of 39.50%. It contained 85 protein coding genes (PCGs), 37 tRNAs, and 8 rRNA genes. 207 simple sequence repeats (SSRs) and 31 codons with relative synonymous codon (RSCU)value > 1 were detected. Phylogenetic analysis divided 10 Lagerstroemia species into evolutionary branches of clade A and clade B. We conducted a comparative analysis of Lagerstroemia "Pink Velours" complete chloroplast genome with the genomes of six closely related Lagerstroemia species from different origins. The structural features of all seven species were similar, except for the deletion of ycf1 nucleobases at the JSA boundary. The large single-copy (LSC) and the small single-copy (SSC) had a higher sequence divergence than the IR region, and 8 genes that were highly divergent (trnK-UUU, petN, psbF, psbJ, ndhE, ndhD, ndhI, ycf1) had been identified and could be used as molecular markers in future studies. High nucleotide diversity was present in genes belonging to the photosynthesis category. Mutation of single nucleic acid was mainly influenced by codon usage. The value percentage of nonsynonymous substitutions (Ka) and synonymous substitutions (Ks) in 6 Lagerstroemia species revealed that more photosynthesis genes have Ka or Ks only in Lagerstroemia fauriei, Lagerstroemia limii, and Lagerstroemia subcostata. These advances will facilitate the breeding of closely related Lagerstroemia species and deepen understanding on climatic adaptation of Lagerstroemia plants.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The incidence of rebleeding in patients with upper gastrointestinal bleeding (UGIB) remains despite advances in intervention approaches. Therefore, early prediction of the risk of rebleeding could help to greatly reduce the mortality rate in these patients. We aim to develop and validate a new prediction model to predict the probability of rebleeding in patients with AUGIB. METHODS: A total of 1170 AUGIB patients who completed the procedure of emergency gastroscopy within 48 h of admission were included. Logistic regression analyses were performed to construct a new prediction model. A receiver operating characteristic curve, a line graph, and a calibration and decision curve were used to assess the predictive performance of our new prediction model and compare its performance with that of the AIMS65 scoring system to determine the predictive value of our prediction model. RESULTS: A new prediction model was constructed based on Lactic acid (LAC), neutrophil percentage (NEUTP), platelet (PLT), albumin (ALB), and D-DIMER. The AUC values and their 95% confidence interval (CI) for the new prediction model and the AIMS65 score were 0.746 and 0.619, respectively, and 0.697-0.795 and 0.567-0.670, respectively. In the training group, the C index values based on the prediction model and the AIMS65 scoring system were 0.720 and 0.610, respectively. In the validation group, the C index values based on the prediction model and the AIMS65 scoring system were 0.828 and 0.667, respectively. The decision and calibration curve analysis also showed that the prediction model was superior to the AIMS65 scoring system in terms of accuracy of prediction, consistency, and net clinical benefit. CONCLUSION: The prediction model can predict the probability of rebleeding in AUGIB patients after endoscopic hemostasis therapy.

RESUMO

This study assessed the relationship between serum albumin levels and adult stroke risk. From the 2009 to 2018 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, we performed a cross-sectional study with 17,303 participants who were 40 years of age or higher. A multivariate logistic regression model investigated serum albumin levels and stroke. To investigate apparent nonlinear connections, smoothed curve fitting was used. When a nonlinear relationship was discovered, the inflection point was determined using a recursive method. Serum albumin levels were significantly and inversely linked with the risk of stroke after controlling for possible variables [odds ratio 0.02, 95% confidence interval (0.00, 0.18), P = .0003]. An examination of subgroups revealed that the inverse relationship between serum albumin levels and risk of stroke was statistically significant in men, participants under 60 years old, non-diabetic participants, and hypertensive participants. Serum albumin levels and the risk of stroke were negatively correlated. An increased risk of stroke was linked to lower serum albumin levels.

RESUMO

The high rates of misdiagnosis and untreated mortality with regard to Budd-Chiari syndrome (BCS) indicated the need to screen effective biomarkers. The aim of this study was to explore the function of extracellular vesicles (EVs) in patients with BCS as well as associated mechanisms. First, differentially expressed long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) from EVs separated from serum between BCS and healthy controls were screened using microarray analysis. Second, the proliferation, migration and tube formation of human vascular endothelial cells (HUVECs) were detected after EVs treatment, along with vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) levels and inflammatory factors from the cell supernatant. Last, the overexpressed lncRNA was transfected into the cells to further explore the mechanisms involved. Extracellular vesicles of BCS patients have significantly higher levels of lncRNA MTUS2-5 than healthy controls. Apparently, treatment with EVs from BCS or the ones transfected with plasmids that overexpress lncRNA MTUS2-5 enhances proliferation, migration and angiogenesis capacity. The results were considerably better than those obtained from treatment with EVs from healthy controls or transfection with the normal control plasmid, which also elevated the level of VEGF and inflammatory factors. Furthermore, FOS and PTGS2 were potentially regulated by the lncRNA MTUS2-5 transmitted by EVs. The lncRNA MTUS2-5 in EVs plays an important role in angiogenesis in the Budd-Chiari syndrome.

RESUMO

Pyrolysis is an effective method for removing organic contaminants (e.g. electrolytes, solid electrolyte interface (SEI), and polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) binders) from spent lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). However, during pyrolysis, the metal oxides in black mass (BM) readily react with fluorine-containing contaminants, resulting in a high content of dissociable fluorine in pyrolyzed BM and fluorine-containing wastewater in subsequent hydrometallurgical processes. Herein, an in-situ pyrolysis process is proposed to control the transition pathway of fluorine species in BM using Ca(OH)2-based materials. Results show that the designed fluorine removal additives (FRA@Ca(OH)2) can effectively scavenge SEI components (LixPOFy) and PVDF binders from BM. During the in-situ pyrolysis, potential fluorine species (e.g. HF, PF5, and POF3) are adsorbed and converted to CaF2 on the surface of FRA@Ca(OH)2 additives, thereby inhibiting the fluorination reaction with electrode materials. Under the optimal experimental conditions (temperature = 400 °C, BM: FRA@Ca(OH)2 = 1: 4, holding time = 1.0 h), the dissociable fluorine content in BM was reduced from 3.84 wt% to 2.54 wt%. The inherent metal fluorides in BM feedstock hinder the further removal of fluorine with pyrolysis treatment. This study provides a potential strategy for source control of fluorine-containing contaminants in the recycling process of spent LIBs.

RESUMO

A novel 2-transistor (2T) pixel EUV detector is proposed and demonstrated by advanced CMOS technology. The proposed 2T detector also exhibits high spectral range (< 267 nm) and spatial resolution (67 µm) with high stability and CMOS Compatibility. The compact 2T EUV detector pixels arranged in a test array are capable of on-wafer recording the 2D EUV flux distribution without any external power. The compact 2T EUV detector pixels arranged in a test array are capable of on-wafer recording the 2D EUV flux distribution without any external power. Through proper initialization process, EUV induced discharging mechanism is fully investigated and an EUV induced electron emission efficiency model is established. Finally, a 2D array for in-situ EUV detection is demonstrated to precisely reflect the pattern projected on the chip/wafer surface.

RESUMO

Occupational exposure to trichloroethylene (TCE) causes a systemic skin disorder with hepatitis known as TCE hypersensitivity syndrome (TCE-HS). Human Leukocyte Antigen (HLA)-B*13:01 is its susceptibility factor; however, the immunological pathogenesis of TCE-HS remains unknown. We herein examined the hypothesis that autoantibodies to CYP2E1 are primarily involved in TCE-HS. A case-control study of 80 TCE-HS patients, 186 TCE-tolerant controls (TCE-TC), and 71 TCE-nonexposed controls (TCE-nonEC) was conducted to measure their serum anti-CYP2E1 antibody (IgG) levels. The effects of TCE exposure indices, such as 8-h time-weighted-average (TWA) airborne concentrations, urinary metabolite concentrations, and TCE usage duration; sex; smoking and drinking habits; and alanine aminotransferase (ALT) levels on the antibody levels were also analyzed in the two control groups. There were significant differences in anti-CYP2E1 antibody levels among the three groups: TCE-TC > TCE-HS patients > TCE-nonEC. Antibody levels were not different between HLA-B*13:01 carriers and noncarriers in TCE-HS patients and TCE-TC. The serum CYP2E1 measurement suggested increased immunocomplex levels only in patients with TCE-HS. Multiple regression analysis for the two control groups showed that the antibody levels were significantly higher by the TCE exposure. Women had higher antibody levels than men; however, smoking, drinking, and ALT levels did not affect the anti-CYP2E1 antibody levels. Anti-CYP2E1 antibodies were elevated at concentrations lower than the TWA concentration of 2.5 ppm for TCE exposure. Since HLA-B*13:01 polymorphism was not involved in the autoantibody levels, the possible mechanism underlying the pathogenesis of TCE-HS is that TCE exposure induces anti-CYP2E1 autoantibody production, and HLA-B*13:01 is involved in the development of TCE-HS.

RESUMO

Pyrolysis is an effective method to remove organics (e.g. electrolytes and binders) from spent lithium-ion battery (LIB). In this study, the co-pyrolysis characteristics of fluorine-containing substances and active materials from LIB were investigated using thermogravimetric-differential scanning calorimetry (TG-DSC), infrared spectroscopy (IR), and mass spectrometry (MS) analysis. Associated with the pyrolysis, active materials adsorb the residues of electrolyte on the surface and into the pores (20-200 °C), while polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) forms a liquid film to cover the local surface of active materials (400-500 °C). These interactions prevent deep removal of organics, leaving fluorine-containing contaminants in active materials. The barrier effect of PVDF liquid mesophase on the removal of organics with secondary liquidous phase formation during pyrolysis was confirmed by in situ optical observation. The migration behavior of fluorine element during the pyrolysis of black mass (BM) from spent LIB was also investigated. With pyrolysis temperature increasing from 100 °C to 600 °C, the dissociable fluorine content in pyrolyzed BM increased from 1.4 wt% to 3.7 wt%. The fluorine-containing contaminants in BM cannot be removed completely by simply increasing pyrolysis temperature. This study provides a better understanding on the transformation of fluorine-containing pollutants during the pyrolysis of BM.

RESUMO

Dry reforming of methane (DRM) has provided an effective avenue to convert two greenhouse gases, CH4 and CO2 , into syngas. Here, we design a DRM photocatalyst Rh/Cex WO3 that invokes both photothermal and photoelectric processes, which overcomes the thermodynamic limitation of DRM under conventional conditions. In contrast to plasmonic or UV-response photocatalysts, our photocatalyst produces a superior light-to-chemical energy efficiency (LTCEE) of 4.65 % with a moderate light intensity. We propose that a light-induced metal-to-metal charge transfer plays a crucial role in the DRM reaction, which induces a redox looping between Ce to W species to lower the activation energy. Quantum mechanical studies reveal that a high oxygen mobility of Cex WO3 , accompanied with the formation of oxo-bridge species, results in a substantial elimination of deposited C species during the reaction. Our catalyst design strategy could offer a promising energy-efficient industrial process for DRM.

RESUMO

Monitoring biophysical signals such as body or organ movements and other physical phenomena is necessary for patient rehabilitation. However, stretchable flexible pressure sensors with high sensitivity and a broad range that can meet these requirements are still lacking. Herein, we successfully monitored various vital biophysical features and implemented in-sensor dynamic deep learning for knee rehabilitation using an ultrabroad linear range and high-sensitivity stretchable iontronic pressure sensor (SIPS). We optimized the topological structure and material composition of the electrode to build a fully stretching on-skin sensor. The high sensitivity (12.43 kPa-1), ultrabroad linear sensing range (1 MPa), high pressure resolution (6.4 Pa), long-term durability (no decay after 12000 cycles), and excellent stretchability (up to 20%) allow the sensor to maintain operating stability, even in emergency cases with a high sudden impact force (near 1 MPa) applied to the sensor. As a practical demonstration, the SIPS can positively track biophysical signals such as pulse waves, muscle movements, and plantar pressure. Importantly, with the help of a neuro-inspired fully convolutional network algorithm, the SIPS can accurately predict knee joint postures for better rehabilitation after orthopedic surgery. Our SIPS has potential as a promising candidate for wearable electronics and artificial intelligent medical engineering owing to its unique high signal-to-noise ratio and ultrabroad linear range. An ultrabroad-linear range (1 MPa) iontronic pressure sensor with superior sensitivity (12.43 kPa-1) and stretchability (up to 20%) was proposed for biophysical monitoring and deep learning-based knee-rehabilitation training.

RESUMO

This paper presents a new fringe projection method for surface-shape measurement that uses novel fringe-width encoded fringe patterns. Specifically, the projection patterns are adjusted with the width of the fringe as the codeword. The wrapped phase with coding information is obtained by using the conventional wrapped phase calculation method, and the fringe order can be identified from the wrapped phase. After the fringe order is corrected based on the region growing algorithm, the fringe order and the wrapped phase can be directly used to reconstruct the surface. Static and dynamic measurements demonstrated the ability of the method to perform 3D shape measurement with only three projected patterns, single camera and projector in the least case.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to explore the clinical characteristics of 742 patients with re-current Corona Virus Disease in 2019 (COVID-19), so as to provide relevant evidence for clinical diagnosis and treatment of re-infected patients. METHODS: Altogether 742 discharged COVID-19 patients were analyzed retrospectively and were divided into re-infected patients (n=60) and non-re-infected patients (n=682) according to whether they became nucleic acid positive again after discharge. The time form leaving the hospital to re-infection and the time form the first nucleic acid negative test results to being re-infected were recorded. The clinical characteristics of the two groups were compared when they were admitted to the hospital. Logistic regression analysis was carried out on disease indicators with statistical differences between the two groups. RESULTS: Compared with non-re-infected patients, there were statistical differences in age, contact history, fatigue, chills, nasal congestion and runny nose, lung CT observations, clinical classification and lymphocyte count of re-infected patients (P<0.05). Logistic regression analysis showed that nasal congestion and a runny nose, a lymphocyte count less than 0.93×109 cells/L, and age ≥65 years were the risk factors of being re-infected. The ROC curve showed that the cut-off value of lymphocyte count was 0.847×109 cells/L, and the AUC of predicted re-infection was 0.867. CONCLUSION: The symptoms of nasal congestion and runny nose, lymphocyte count less than 0.93×109 cells/L and, aged more than 65 years are the risk factors for the recurrent positive rates for COVID-19 patients, and lymphocyte count has certain clinical value in predicting recurrent patients.

RESUMO

The preparation of 3D functional isolated mesoscopic assemblies remains a challenge in the self-assembly of polymers. Here, well-defined 3D hexagonal and hexagram prisms with uniform dimensions are acquired by the crystallization of the inclusion complex composed of a crystalline molecule tris-o-phenylenedioxycyclotriphosphazene (TPP) and a block copolymer. The crystalline TPP plays an important role in the self-assembling process. The faceted morphologies of the hexagonal and hexagram prisms are infrequent in the self-assembly field of soft materials. The formation of the prisms experiences a 3D growth mechanism. The epitaxial growth, accompanied by the heterogeneous nucleation in the edges, yields the growth of inclusion crystals. This study provides a path to construct well-defined polymeric soft materials with broad utility based on numerous supramolecular complexes.

RESUMO

Objectives: In view of the concern expressed about the current references, new references for fetal biparietal diameter and head circumference should be constructed for contemporary local populations. Methods: We conducted a retrospective cross-sectional study in two hospitals in Guangdong, Southern China. Fetal biparietal diameter and head circumference percentiles regression were fitted using Cole's LMS method. The BPD and HC data were then transformed into Z-scores that were calculated using two series of reference equations obtained from two methods: Cole's LMS method and the original "mean and SD method." Each Z-score distribution was presented as the mean and standard deviation. Finally, the sensitivity and specificity of each reference for identifying fetuses <2.5th or >97.5th percentile (based on the observed distribution of Z-scores) were calculated. The misclassified number and Youden's index were listed. Results: A total of 17,974 biparietal diameter and 18,269 head circumference measurements were chosen to establish a reference chart. The LMS method could fit the local population better than the "mean and SD method" as it had a lower number of misclassified fetuses and a higher Youden's index. Conclusion: The Cole's LMS method was able to construct a satisfied reference range of fetal head sizes in Southern China.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: Occupational exposure to trichloroethylene (TCE) induces trichloroethylene hypersensitivity syndrome (TCEHS), which causes hypersensitivity dermatitis and hepatitis. However, whether TCE itself or its two metabolites, trichloroethanol (TCEOH) and trichloroacetic acid (TCA), are involved in TCEHS remains unclear. Therefore, in this study we explored the allergens causing TCEHS and characterized TCEHS-related liver injury in guinea pigs. METHOD: The guinea pig maximization test was performed using TCE, TCEOH, and TCA as candidate allergens. Skin inflammation was scored, and liver function and histopathological changes were evaluated by biochemical tests and hematoxylin and eosin staining, respectively. RESULTS: The sensitization rates for TCE, TCEOH, and TCA were 90.0%, 50.0%, and 0.0%, respectively. In the TCE and TCEOH experimental groups, the skin showed varying degrees of erythema with eosinophil granulocyte infiltration in the dermis. Additionally, serum alanine aminotransferase and γ-glutamyl transpeptidase levels increased significantly, and histological analysis revealed focal hepatocellular necrosis with inflammatory cell infiltration in the liver. CONCLUSIONS: TCE is the main cause of allergy and TCEOH is a secondary factor for allergy in guinea pigs. TCE and TCEOH can cause immune-mediated skin sensitization complicated by focal hepatic necrosis.

RESUMO

Occupational trichloroethylene (TCE) exposure can cause hypersensitivity syndrome (TCE-HS). The human leukocyte antigen (HLA)-B*13:01 is reportedly an important allele involved in TCE-HS onset. However, the threshold exposure level causing TCE-HS in relation to HLA-B*13:01 remains unknown. We conducted a case-control study comprising 37 TCE-HS patients and 97 age- and sex-matched TCE-tolerant controls from the Han Chinese population. Urine and blood of patients were collected on the first day of hospitalization, and those of controls were collected at the end of their shifts. Urinary trichloroacetic acid (TCA) was measured as an exposure marker, and end-of-shift levels in the patients were estimated using the biological half-life of 83.7 h. HLA-B genotype was identified using DNA from blood. Crude odds ratios (ORs) for TCE-HS in the groups with urinary TCA concentration >15 mg/L to ≤50 mg/L and of >50 mg/L were 21.9 [95% confidence interval (CI) 4.2-114.1] and 27.6 (6.1-125.8), respectively, when the group with urinary TCA ≤15 mg/L was used as a reference. The frequency of HLA-B*13:01, the most common allele in the patients, was 62.2% (23/37), which was significantly higher than 17.5% (17/97) in the TCE-tolerant controls, with a crude OR of 8.4 (3.1-22.6). The mutually-adjusted ORs for urinary TCA >15 to ≤50 mg/L, >50 mg/L, and for HLA-B*13:01 were 33.4 (4.1-270.8), 34.0 (5.3-217.1), and 11.0 (2.4-50.7), respectively. In conclusion, reduction of TCE exposure to ≤15 mg/L is required for TCE-HS prevention because urinary TCA concentration >15 mg/L showed increased risk of TCE-HS, regardless of whether the patients had the HLA-B*13:01 allele.

RESUMO

In recent years, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have received extensive interest because of the diversity of their composition, structure, and function. To promote the MOFs' function and performance, the construction of hollow structural metal-organic frameworks and nanoparticle-MOF composites is significantly effective but remains a considerable challenge. In this article, a transformation strategy is developed to synthesize hollow structural Co-MOF-74 by solvothermal transformation of ZIF-67. These Co-MOF-74 particles exhibit a double-layer hollow shell structure without remarkable shape change compared to original ZIF-67 particles. The formation of hollow structure stemmed from the density difference of Co between ZIF-67 and Co-MOF-74. By this strategy, hollow structural Co-MOF-74 with different sizes and shapes are obtained from corresponding ZIF-67, and metal nanoparticles@Co-MOF-74 is synthesized by corresponding nanoparticles@Co-ZIF-67. To verify the structural advantages of hollow structural Co-MOF-74 and Ag nanoparticles@Co-MOF-74, photocatalytic CO2 reduction is used as a model reaction. Conventionally synthesized Co-MOF-74 (MOF-74-C), hollow structural Co-MOF-74 synthesized by transformation method (MOF-74-T) and Ag nanoparticles@Co-MOF-74 (AgNPs@MOF-74) are used as cocatalysts in this reaction. As a result, the cocatalytic activity of MOF-74-T and AgNPs@MOF-74 is 1.8 times and 3.8 times that of MOF-74-C, respectively.

RESUMO

Composition engineering of halide perovskite allows the tunability of the band gap over a wide range so that photons can be effectively harvested, an aspect that is of critical importance for increasing the efficiency of photocatalysis under sunlight. However, the poor stability and the low photocatalytic activity of halide perovskites prevent use of these defect-tolerant materials in wide applications involving photocatalysis. Here, an alcohol-based photocatalytic system for dye degradation demonstrated high stability through the use of double perovskite of Cs2 AgBiBr6 . The reaction rate on Cs2 AgBiBr6 is comparable to that on CdS, a model inorganic semiconductor photocatalyst. The fact of fast reaction between free radicals and dye molecules indicates the unique catalytic properties of the Cs2 AgBiBr6 surface. Deposition of metal clusters onto Cs2 AgBiBr6 effectively enhances the photocatalytic activity. Although the stability (five consecutive photocatalytic cycles without obvious decrease of efficiency) requires further improvements, the results indicate the significant potential of Cs2 AgBiBr6 -based photocatalysis.

RESUMO

Calcium carbonate nanomaterials (nano-CaCO3) are widely used in both manufacturing and consumer products, but their potential health hazards remain unclear. The objective of this study was to survey workplace exposure levels and health effects of workers exposed to nano-CaCO3. Personal and area sampling, as well as real-time and dust monitoring, were performed to characterize mass exposure, particle size distribution, and particle number exposure. A total of 56 workers (28 exposed workers and 28 unexposed controls) were studied in a cross-sectional study. They completed physical examinations, spirometry, and digital radiography. The results showed that the gravimetric nano-CaCO3 concentration was 5.264 ± 6.987 mg/m3 (0.037-22.192 mg/m3) at the workplace, and 3.577 ± 2.065 mg/m3 (2.042-8.161 mg/m3) in the breathing zone of the exposed workers. The particle number concentrations ranged from 8193 to 39 621 particles/cm3 with a size range of 30-150 nm. The process of packing had the highest gravimetric and particle number concentrations. The particle number concentration positively correlated with gravimetric concentrations of nano-CaCO3. The levels of hemoglobin, creatine phosphokinase (CK), lactate dehydrogenase, and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) in the nano-CaCO3 exposure group increased significantly, but the white blood cell count (WBC), Complement 3 (C3), total protein (TP), uric acid, and creatinine (CREA) all decreased significantly. The prevalence rate of pulmonary hypofunction was significantly higher (p = 0.037), and the levels of vital capacity (VC), forced vital capacity (FVC), forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV1), FEV1/FVC, peak expiratory flow and forced expiratory flow 25% (FEF 25%), FEF 25-75% were negatively correlated with gravimetric concentrations of nano-CaCO3 (p < 0.05). Logistic analysis showed that nano-CaCO3 exposure level was associated with pulmonary hypofunction (p = 0.005). Meanwhile, a dose-effect relationship was found between the accumulated gravimetric concentrations of nano-CaCO3 and the prevalence rate of pulmonary hypofunction (p = 0.048). In conclusion, long-term and high-level nano-CaCO3 exposure can induce pulmonary hypofunction in workers. Thus, lung function examination is suggested for occupational populations with nano-CaCO3 exposure. Furthermore, future health protection efforts should focus on senior workers with accumulation effects of nano-CaCO3 exposure.

RESUMO

Occupational trichloroethylene (TCE) exposure can induce life-threatening generalized dermatitis accompanied by hepatitis: TCE hypersensitivity syndrome (HS). Since the patients' exposure levels have not been fully clarified, this study estimated end-of-shift urinary concentrations of trichloroacetic acid (TCA) and their lower limit below which the disease occurrence was rare. TCA concentration was measured in 78 TCE HS patients whose urine was collected at admission between 2nd and 14th d after their last shift. Then a linear regression model was used to calculate the mean TCA concentration with 95% confidence interval (95% CI) and 95% prediction interval (95% PI) in the end-of-shift urine. The estimated mean concentration was 83 (95% CI, 49-140) mg/l with 95% PI 9.6-720 mg/l. TCA concentrations were also measured in the end-of-shift urine of 38 healthy workers involved in the same job as were the patients. The geometric mean and its 95% CI were 127 mg/l and 16-984 mg/l, respectively. The exposure levels in HS patients might have thus overlapped with those in workers without HS. Accordingly, it was suggested that HS occurred in the environment where the workers were exposed to the TCE concentration corresponding to the urinary TCA concentration as low as 10 mg/l.
