RESUMO

In this study, the microstructure and fracture toughness of ZKX500 magnesium alloy under different processing were investigated. The results show that the as-extruded (FH) consists of coarsen and fine grains with higher residual stress. The fracture toughness and crack propagation are significantly distinct along different directions. By contrast, the rolled specimen (FRH) shows an equiaxed grain structure and precipitation dispersion in the matrix. After hot-rolling and heat treatment, less texture effect affected on the fracture toughness and rupture energy absorption. These renders the higher attractive on the rolled ZKX500 magnesium alloy in the applications of orthopedic bone plates.

RESUMO

Magnesium-matrix implants can be detected by X-ray, making post-operative monitoring easier. Since the density and mechanical properties of Mg alloys are similar to those of human bones, the stress-shielding effect can be avoided, accelerating the recovery and regeneration of bone tissues. Additionally, Mg biodegradability shields patients from the infection risk and medical financial burden of needing another surgery. However, the major challenge for magnesium-matrix implants is the rapid degradation rate, which necessitates surface treatment. In this study, the ZKX500 Mg alloy was used, and a non-toxic and eco-friendly anodic oxidation method was adopted to improve corrosion resistance. The results indicate that the anodic coating mainly consisted of magnesium phosphate. After anodic oxidation, the specimen surface developed a coating and an ion-exchanged layer that could slow down the degradation and help maintain the mechanical properties. The results of the tensile and impact tests reveal that after being immersed in SBF for 28 days, the anodic oxidation-treated specimens maintained good strength, ductility, and toughness. Anodic coating provides an excellent surface for cell attachment and growth. In the animal experiment, the anodic oxidation-treated magnesium bone screw used had no adverse effect and could support the injured part for at least 3 months.

RESUMO

COVID-19 should not be the world's last public health disaster, so there is an urgent need to learn from COVID-19 to prepare better for the next public health disaster. This study aims to understand the factors that make people wear a face mask at the beginning of an outbreak of public health disaster. Semi-structured interviews were conducted during April 2020 in China, one month after the COVID-19 was declared a pandemic. The respondents were members of the public living in China, covering two age groups: young adults and older adults. They were recruited using a convenient sample and snowball sampling strategy. The results were analysed using content analysis. Seventeen subjects were recruited, among which nine were young adults (average age = 26.4; SD = 10.5), and eight were older adults (average age = 60.4; SD = 12.1). This study found that environmental factors, personal factors, factors concerning wearing masks, specific circumstances, and development of the pandemic were the common factors considered by both young adults and older adults. This study should help the authority formulate prevention policies better to reduce the risk of an outbreak if there is a new virus outbreak in the future, unfortunately.

RESUMO

This study investigated the attitudes of Taiwanese employees toward individuals and their supported coworkers with intellectual disabilities (ID). The findings indicated that the general attitudes of Taiwanese employees toward individuals with ID and their affective reactions toward their coworkers with ID were positive. These discoveries were contrary to previous beliefs that Taiwanese people tended to have societal stigma toward people and coworkers with ID. The outcomes also showed that the participants who had longer work contact with their coworkers with ID tended to have more positive attitudes toward them. Therefore, promoting supported employment trainings and opportunities for qualified people with ID was recommended.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Mesh-augmented vaginal surgery for treatment of pelvic organ prolapse (POP) does not meet patients' needs. This study aims to test the hypothesis that fascia tissue engineering using adipose-derived stem cells (ADSCs) might be a potential therapeutic strategy for reconstructing the pelvic floor. METHODS: Human ADSCs were isolated, differentiated, and characterized in vitro. Both ADSCs and fibroblastic-differentiated ADSCs were used to fabricate tissue-engineered fascia equivalents, which were then transplanted under the back skin of experimental nude mice. RESULTS: ADSCs prepared in our laboratory were characterized as a group of mesenchymal stem cells. In vitro fibroblastic differentiation of ADSCs showed significantly increased gene expression of cellular collagen type I and elastin (p < 0.05) concomitantly with morphological changes. By contrast, ADSCs cultured in control medium did not demonstrate these changes. Both of the engrafted fascia equivalents could be traced up to 12 weeks after transplantation in the subsequent animal study. Furthermore, the histological outcomes differed with a thin (111.0 ± 19.8 µm) lamellar connective tissue or a thick (414.3 ± 114.9 µm) adhesive fibrous tissue formation between the transplantation of ADSCs and fibroblastic-differentiated ADSCs, respectively. Nonetheless, the implantation of a scaffold without cell seeding (the control group) resulted in a thin (102.0 ± 17.1 µm) fibrotic band and tissue contracture. CONCLUSION: Our results suggest the ADSC-seeded implant is better than the implant alone in enhancing tissue regeneration after transplantation. ADSCs with or without fibroblastic differentiation might have a potential but different role in fascia tissue engineering to repair POP in the future.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: Neurotoxicities resulting from various medications are under diagnosed; Metronidazole-induced encephalopathy is one of them. Here we present two patients with a history of metronidazole use and discuss neuroimaging findings. CASE REPORT: We report two patients suffering from acute neurological symptoms associated with metronidazole use. A 70-year-old female who received a cumulative dose of 41.25g of metronidazole within one month, developed seizure. Brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed T2 hyperintensity over bilateral dentate nuclei and dorsal midbrain. A 56-year-old female suffering from acute onset of central vertigo with metronidazole use, took a total dose of 24g. The brain MRI showed T2 hyperintensity over dorsal midbrain and dorsal medulla, which disappeared in the following neuroimaging 50 days later. Metronidazole-induced encephalopathy (MIE) was suspected in both patients. CONCLUSION: Metronidazole-induced encephalopathy is an uncommon but potentially reversible disease in patients with acute neurological deficits from the use of metronidazole. Nonalcoholic Wernicke's encephalopathy may share a similar metabolic pathway with MIE, resulting in difficulties in diagnosis.

RESUMO

The purpose of this study is to examine and describe the perceptions of Taiwanese mothers who have children with mild to moderate mental retardation as their children enter their teenage years (13-15 years of age). The focus is on whether these mothers' attitudes toward their children and other individuals with disabilities changed after they had experience in raising their own children with disabilities. The results of this qualitative study indicated that having experience in raising children with disabilities led participants to have a more positive outlook toward their children and others with disabilities. In addition, the results of this study demonstrated that the majority of interviewees believed that karma was a factor in their young teenagers being born with disabilities.

RESUMO

A low-temperature solution approach (90-95 degrees C) using FeCl(3) and urea was carried out to synthesize beta-FeOOH nanorods in aqueous solution. The as-synthesized beta-FeOOH nanorods were further calcined at 300 degrees C to form porous nanorods with compositions including both beta-FeOOH and alpha-Fe(2)O(3). The derived porous nanorods were engineered to assemble with four layers of polyelectrolytes (polyacrylic acid (PAA)/polyethylenimine(PEI)/PAA/PEI) on their surfaces as polyelectrolyte multilayer nanocapsules. Fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC) molecules were loaded into the polyelectrolyte multilayer nanocapsules in order to investigate drug release and intracellular delivery in Hela cells. The as-prepared nanocapsules showed ionic strength-dependent control of the permeability of the polyelectrolyte shells. The release behavior of the entrapped FITC from the FITC-loaded nanocapsules exhibited either controlled- or sustained-release trends, depending on the compactness of the polyelectrolyte shells on the nanorod surfaces. Cytotoxicity measurements demonstrate that the native nanorods and the polymer-coated nanorods have excellent biocompatibility in all dosages between 0.1 ng mL(-1) and 100 microgm L(-1). The time dependence of uptake of FITC-loaded nanocapsules by Hela cancer cells observed by laser confocal microscopy indicates that the nanocapsules can readily be taken up by cancer cells in 15 min, a relatively short period of time, while the slow release of the FITC from the initial perimembrane space into the cytoplasm was followed by release into the nucleus after 24 h.
