Previous studies about anhedonia symptoms in bipolar depression (BD) ignored the unique role of gender on brain function. This study aims to explore the regional brain neuroimaging features of BD with anhedonia and the sex differences in these patients. The resting-fMRI by applying fractional amplitude of low-frequency fluctuation (fALFF) method was estimated in 263 patients with BD (174 high anhedonia [HA], 89 low anhedonia [LA]) and 213 healthy controls. The effects of two different factors in patients with BD were analyzed using a 3 (group: HA, LA, HC) × 2 (sex: male, female) ANOVA. The fALFF values were higher in the HA group than in the LA group in the right medial cingulate gyrus and supplementary motor area. For the sex-by-group interaction, the fALFF values of the right hippocampus, left medial occipital gyrus, right insula, and bilateral medial cingulate gyrus were significantly higher in HA males than in LA males but not females. These results suggested that the pattern of high activation could be a marker of anhedonia symptoms in BD males, and the sex differences should be considered in future studies of BD with anhedonia symptoms.

Chinese bayberry (Myrica rubra or Morella rubra; 2n = 16) produces fruit with a distinctive flavor, high nutritional, and economic value. However, previous versions of the bayberry genome lack sequence continuity. Moreover, to date, no large-scale germplasm resource association analysis has examined the allelic and genetic variations determining fruit quality traits. Therefore, in this study, we assembled a telomere-to-telomere (T2T) gap-free reference genome for the cultivar 'Zaojia' using PacBio HiFi long reads. The resulting 292.60 Mb T2T genome, revealed 8 centromeric regions, 15 telomeres, and 28 345 genes. This represents a substantial improvement in the genome continuity and integrity of Chinese bayberry. Subsequently, we re-sequenced 173 accessions, identifying 6 649 674 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs). Further, the phenotypic analyses of 29 fruit quality-related traits enabled a genome-wide association study (GWAS), which identified 1937 SNPs and 1039 genes significantly associated with 28 traits. An SNP cluster pertinent to fruit color was identified on Chr6: 3407532 to 5 153 151 bp region, harboring two MYB genes (MrChr6G07650 and MrChr6G07660), exhibiting differential expression in extreme phenotype transcriptomes, linked to anthocyanin synthesis. An adjacent, closely linked gene, MrChr6G07670 (MLP-like protein), harbored an exonic missense variant and was shown to increase anthocyanin production in tobacco leaves tenfold. This SNP cluster, potentially a quantitative trait locus (QTL), collectively regulates bayberry fruit color. In conclusion, our study presented a complete reference genome, uncovered a suite of allelic variations related to fruit-quality traits, and identified functional genes that could be harnessed to enhance fruit quality and breeding efficiency of bayberries.

The importance of N6-methyladenine (m6A) in mRNA metabolism, physiology, pathology and other life processes is well recognized. However, the exact role of m6A regulators in primary Sjögren's syndrome (PSS) remains unclear. In this study, we used bioinformatics and machine learning random forest approach to screen eight key m6A regulators from the Gene Expression Omnibus GSE7451, GSE40611 and GSE84844 datasets. An accurate nomogram model for predicting PSS risk was established based on these regulators. And using consensus clustering, patients diagnosed with PSS were classified into two different m6A patterns. We found that patients in group B had higher m6A scores compared to those in group A: furthermore, both groups were closely related to immunity and possibly to other diseases. These results emphasise the important role of m6A regulators in the pathogenesis of PSS. Our study of m6A patterns may inform future immunotherapy strategies for PSS.

OBJECTIVE: Because of similar clinical manifestations, bipolar disorder (BD) patients are often misdiagnosed as major depressive disorder (MDD). This study aimed to compare the difference between depressed patients later converting to BD and unipolar depression (UD) according to diffusion tensor imaging (DTI). METHOD: Patients with MDD (562 participants) in depressive episode states and healthy controls (HCs) (145 participants) were recruited over 10 years. Demographic and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) data were collected at the time of recruitment. All patients with MDD were followed up for 5 years and classified into the transfer to BD (tBD) group (83 participants) and UD group (160 participants) according to the follow-up results. DTI and functional magnetic resonance imaging at baseline were compared. RESULTS: Common abnormalities were found in both tBD and UD groups, including left superior cerebellar peduncle (SCP.L), right anterior limb of the internal capsule (ALIC.R), right superior fronto-occipital fasciculus (SFOF.R), and right inferior fronto-occipital fasciculus (IFOF.R). The tBD showed more extensive abnormalities than the UD in the body of corpus callosum, fornix, left superior corona radiata, left posterior corona radiata, left superior longitudinal fasciculus, and left superior fronto-occipital fasciculus. CONCLUSION: The study demonstrated the common and distinct abnormalities of tBD and UD when compared to HC. The tBD group showed more extensive disruptions of white matter integrity, which could be a potential biomarker for the early identification of BD.

OBJECTIVE: Bipolar disorder (BD) is often misdiagnosed as major depressive disorder (MDD) in the early stage, which may lead to inappropriate treatment. This study aimed to characterize the alterations of spontaneous neuronal activity in patients with depressive episodes whose diagnosis transferred from MDD to BD. METHODS: 532 patients with MDD and 132 healthy controls (HCs) were recruited over 10 years. During the follow-up period, 75 participants with MDD transferred to BD (tBD), and 157 participants remained with the diagnosis of unipolar depression (UD). After excluding participants with poor image quality and excessive head movement, 68 participants with the diagnosis of tBD, 150 participants with the diagnosis of UD, and 130 HCs were finally included in the analysis. The dynamic amplitude of low-frequency fluctuations (dALFF) of spontaneous neuronal activity was evaluated in tBD, UD and HC using functional magnetic resonance imaging at study inclusion. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis was performed to evaluate sensitivity and specificity of the conversion prediction from MDD to BD based on dALFF. RESULTS: Compared to HC, tBD exhibited elevated dALFF at left premotor cortex (PMC_L), right lateral temporal cortex (LTC_R) and right early auditory cortex (EAC_R), and UD showed reduced dALFF at PMC_L, left paracentral lobule (PCL_L), bilateral medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC), right orbital frontal cortex (OFC_R), right dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC_R), right posterior cingulate cortex (PCC_R) and elevated dALFF at LTC_R. Furthermore, tBD exhibited elevated dALFF at PMC_L, PCL_L, bilateral mPFC, bilateral OFC, DLPFC_R, PCC_R and LTC_R than UD. In addition, ROC analysis based on dALFF in differential areas obtained an area under the curve (AUC) of 72.7%. CONCLUSIONS: The study demonstrated the temporal dynamic abnormalities of tBD and UD in the critical regions of the somatomotor network (SMN), default mode network (DMN), and central executive network (CEN). The differential abnormal patterns of temporal dynamics between the two diseases have the potential to predict the diagnosis transition from MDD to BD.

Brain neurons support arousal and cognitive activity in the form of spectral transient bursts and cooperate with the peripheral nervous system to adapt to the surrounding environment. However, the temporal dynamics of brain-heart interactions have not been confirmed, and the mechanism of brain-heart interactions in major depressive disorder (MDD) remains unclear. This study aimed to provide direct evidence for brain-heart synchronization in temporal dynamics and clarify the mechanism of brain-heart interaction disruption in MDD. Eight-minute resting-state (closed eyes) electroencephalograph and electrocardiogram signals were acquired simultaneously. The Jaccard index (JI) was used to measure the temporal synchronization between cortical theta transient bursts and cardiac cycle activity (diastole and systole) in 90 MDD patients and 44 healthy controls (HCs) at rest. The deviation JI was used to reflect the equilibrium of brain activity between diastole and systole. The results showed that the diastole JI was higher than the systole JI in both the HC and MDD groups; compared to HCs, the deviation JI attenuated at F4, F6, FC2, and FC4 in the MDD patients. The eccentric deviation JI was negatively correlated with the despair factor scores of the HAMD, and after 4 weeks of antidepressant treatment, the eccentric deviation JI was positively correlated with the despair factor scores of the HAMD. It was concluded that brain-heart synchronization existed in the theta band in healthy individuals and that disturbed rhythm modulation of the cardiac cycle on brain transient theta bursts at right frontoparietal sites led to brain-heart interaction disruption in MDD.

OBJECTIVE: We conducted this resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rsfMRI) study to characterize changes in regional homogeneity (ReHo) or fractional amplitude of low-frequency fluctuations (fALFF) in young adult patients with major depressive disorder (MDD), with or without non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI). METHODS: We recruited 54 MDD patients with NSSI (MDD/NSSI), 68 MDD patients without NSSI, which is referred to as simple MDD (sMDD), and 66 matched healthy controls (HCs). A combination of fALFF and ReHo analyses was conducted. The effects of NSSI on the brain and their relationship to clinical variables were examined in this study. RESULTS: MDD/NSSI patients have decreased fALFF in the right superior frontal gyrus (SFG) and the right inferior parietal lobe (IPL), decreased ReHo in the right SFG and the right middle temporal gyrus (MTG) and the left middle occipital gyrus (MOG). fALFF and ReHo values of the right SFG are positively correlated. The ReHo values of the right SFG and the number of recent self-injuries are positively correlated; the fALFF values of the right SFG are negatively correlated with NSSI severity. CONCLUSIONS: There is a difference in brain activity between MDD/NSSI and sMDD, which may serve as an important physiological marker to determine the risk of self-injury and suicide. SIGNIFICANCE: Abnormal brain activity in patients with NSSI may provide new perspectives and significant implications on the severity of MDD patients and the prevention of self-injury and suicide.

Objective: To investigate the antibacterial impact of daptomycin and azithromycin in vitro on methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) biofilm. Methods: (1) Measure the strain growth curve and the biofilm formation curve. (2) Determine the minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) of daptomycin and azithromycin. (3) Investigate the antibacterial impact of the combination of daptomycin and azithromycin. (4) Perform the evaluation of the intervention impact of antimicrobial agents on MRSA biofilm. (5) Observe the biofilm after intervention with the antibacterial agent. Results: (1) MRSA exhibited three phases: lag phase (0-4 h), logarithmic growth (4-8 h) and stationary phase after 18 h; its biofilm began to form at 6 h, semi-matured at 24 h, and reached maturity after 48 h. (2) The MICs of daptomycin and azithromycin were 8 µg/mL and greater than 256 µg/mL, respectively. (3) The combination of daptomycin and azithromycin has an additive effect on MRSA (Fractional Inhibitory Concentration Index [FICI] 0.625) (FICI = MIC of drug A in combination/MIC of drug A alone + MIC of drug B in combination/MIC of drug B alone). Evaluation criteria: Synergistic effect is considered when FICI ≤ 0.5; additive effect is considered when 0.5 < FICI ≤ 1; irrelevant effect is considered when 1 < FICI ≤ 2; antagonistic effect is considered when FICI > 2). (4) Daptomycin or azithromycin at MICs inhibited not only the growth of planktonic bacteria but also the formation of biofilm. (5) The combination of both, in which group the ratio of live/dead bacteria is low and the biofilm morphology was incomplete, was more productive than monotherapy in against biofilm. Conclusion: Both daptomycin and azithromycin have anti-MRSA biofilm activity, and daptomycin is dominant. The fact that the combination of both can significantly inhibit the further maturation of MRSA biofilm and destroy already formed biofilm demonstrates the superiority of the combination over the monotherapy.

BACKGROUND: Several epidemiological studies and psychological models have suggested that major depressive disorder (MDD) with anhedonia is associated with suicidal ideation (SI). However, little is known about whether the functional network pattern and intrinsic topologically disrupted in patients with anhedonia are related to SI. METHODS: The resting-fMRI by applying network-based statistic (NBS) and graph-theory analyses was estimated in 273 patients with MDD (144 high anhedonia [HA], 129 low anhedonia [LA]) and 150 healthy controls. In addition, we quantified the SI scores of each patient. Finally, the mediation analysis assessed whether anhedonia symptoms could mediate the relationship between anhedonia-related network metrics and SI. RESULT: The NBS analysis demonstrated that individuals with HA have a single abnormally increased functional connectivity component in a frontal-limbic circuit (termed the "anhedonia-related network", including the frontal cortex, striatum, anterior cingulate cortex and amygdala). The graph-theory analysis demonstrated that the anhedonia-related network showed a significantly disrupted topological organization (lower gamma and lambda), which the small-world property trend randomized. Furthermore, the anhedonia symptoms could mediate the relationship between the anhedonia-related network metrics (the mean functional connectivity values, the area under the curves values of gamma and nodal local efficiency in nucleus accumbens) and SI. CONCLUSIONS: We found that disruption of the reward-related network in MDD leads to SI through anhedonia symptoms. These findings show the abnormal topological construction of functional brain network organization in anhedonia, shedding light on the neurological processes underlying SI in MDD patients with anhedonia symptoms.

BACKGROUND: Major depressive disorder (MDD), a common mental disorder worldwide, frequently coexists with various physical illnesses, and recent studies have shown an increased prevalence of subclinical hypothyroidism (SHypo) among MDD patients. However, the neural mechanisms shared and unique to these disorders and the associated alterations in brain function remain largely unknown. This study investigated the potential brain function mechanisms underlying comorbid MDD and SHypo. METHOD: Thirty MDD patients (non-comorbid group), 30 MDD patients comorbid with SHypo (comorbid group), 26 patients with SHypo, and 30 healthy controls were recruited for resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI). We used regional homogeneity (ReHo) to examine differences in internal cerebral activity across the four groups. RESULTS: Compared with the non-comorbid group, the comorbid group exhibited significantly higher ReHo values in the right orbital part of the middle frontal gyrus (ORBmid) and bilateral middle frontal gyrus; decreased ReHo values in the right middle temporal gyrus, right thalamus, and right superior temporal gyrus, and right insula. Within the comorbid group, serum TSH levels were negatively associated with the ReHo values of the right insula; the ReHo values of the right Insula were negatively associated with the retardation factor score; the ReHo values of the right ORBmid were positively correlated with the anxiety/somatization factor scores. CONCLUSIONS: These findings provide valuable clues for exploring the shared neural mechanisms between MDD and SHypo and have important implications for understanding the pathophysiological mechanisms of the comorbidity of the two disorders.

OBJECTIVE: The external behavioural manifestations and internal neural mechanisms of anhedonia are sexually dimorphic. This study aimed to explore the sex differences in the regional brain neuroimaging features of anhedonia in the context of major depressive disorder (MDD). METHOD: The resting-fMRI by applying amplitude of low-frequency fluctuation (ALFF) method was estimated in 414 patients with MDD (281 high anhedonia [HA], 133 low anhedonia [LA]) and 213 healthy controls (HC). The effects of two factors in patients with MDD were analysed using a 2 (sex: male, female) × 2 (group: HA, LA) ANOVA concerning the brain regions in which statistical differences were identified between patients with MDD and HC. We followed up with patients with HA at baseline, and 43 patients completed a second fMRI scan in remission. Paired t-test was performed to compare the ALFF values of anhedonia-related brain regions between the baseline and remission periods. RESULTS: For the sex-by-group interaction, the bilateral insula, right hippocampus, right post cingulum cortex, and left putamen showed significant differences. Furthermore, the abnormally elevated ALFF values in anhedonia-related brain regions at baseline decreased in remission. CONCLUSION: Our findings point to the fact that the females showed unique patterns of anhedonia-related brain activity compared to males, which may have clinical implications for interfering with the anhedonia symptoms in MDD. Using task fMRI, we can further examine the distinct characteristics between consumption anhedonia and anticipation anhedonia in MDD.

BACKGROUND: Psychomotor alterations are a common symptom in patients with major depressive disorder (MDD). The primary motor cortex (M1) plays a vital role in the mechanism of psychomotor alterations. Post-movement beta rebound (PMBR) in the sensorimotor cortex is abnormal in patients with motor abnormalities. However, the changes in M1 beta rebound in patients with MDD remain unclear. This study aimed to primarily explore the relationship between psychomotor alterations and PMBR in MDD. METHODS: One hundred thirty-two subjects were enrolled in the study, comprising 65 healthy controls (HCs) and 67 MDD patients. All participants performed a simple right-hand visuomotor task during MEG scanning. PMBR was measured in the left M1 at the source reconstruction level with the time-frequency analysis method. Retardation factor scores and neurocognitive test performance, including the Digit Symbol Substitution Test (DSST), the Making Test Part A (TMT-A), and the Verbal Fluency Test (VFT), were used to measure psychomotor functions. Pearson correlation analyses were used to assess relationships between PMBR and psychomotor alterations in MDD. RESULTS: The MDD group showed worse neurocognitive performance than the HC group in all three neurocognitive tests. The PMBR was diminished in patients with MDD compared to HCs. In a group of MDD patients, the reduced PMBR was negatively correlated with retardation factor scores. Further, there was a positive correlation between the PMBR and DSST scores. PMBR is negatively associated with the TMT-A scores. CONCLUSION: Our findings suggested that the attenuated PMBR in M1 could illustrate the psychomotor disturbance in MDD, possibly contributing to clinical psychomotor symptoms and deficits of cognitive functions.

BACKGROUND: The mood-concordance bias is a key feature of major depressive disorder (MDD), but the spatiotemporal neural activity associated with emotional processing in MDD remains unclear. Understanding the dysregulated connectivity patterns during emotional processing and their relationship with clinical symptoms could provide insights into MDD neuropathology. METHODS: We enrolled 108 MDD patients and 64 healthy controls (HCs) who performed an emotion recognition task during magnetoencephalography recording. Network-based statistics (NBS) was used to analyze whole-brain functional connectivity (FC) across different frequency ranges during distinct temporal periods. The relationship between the aberrant FC and affective symptoms was explored. RESULTS: MDD patients exhibited decreased FC strength in the beta band (13-30 Hz) compared to HCs. During the early stage of emotional processing (0-100 ms), reduced FC was observed between the left parahippocampal gyrus and the left cuneus. In the late stage (250-400 ms), aberrant FC was primarily found in the cortex-limbic-striatum systems. Moreover, the FC strength between the right fusiform gyrus and left thalamus, and between the left calcarine fissure and left inferior temporal gyrus were negatively associated with Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HAMD) scores. LIMITATIONS: Medication information was not involved. CONCLUSION: MDD patients exhibited abnormal temporal-spatial neural interactions in the beta band, ranging from early sensory to later cognitive processing stages. These aberrant interactions involve the cortex-limbic-striatum circuit. Notably, aberrant FC in may serve as a potential biomarker for assessing depression severity.

Introduction: To explore the association between regional gray matter volume (GMV) and cognitive impairments and ascertain whether the regional brain alterations related to cognitive impairments occur in major depressive disorder (MDD) patients with comorbid subclinical hypothyroidism (SHypo). Methods: We enrolled 32 MDD patients, 32 MDD patients with comorbid SHypo, and 32 normal controls and subjected them to thyroid function tests, neurocognitive tests, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Using voxel-based morphometry (VBM) analysis, we examined the pattern of gray matter (GM) in these participants. We also used ANOVA to detect group differences and partial correlation to explore the potential association between GMV alterations and cognitive tests in comorbid patients. Results: The comorbid patients exhibited significantly smaller GMV in the right middle frontal gyrus (MFG) than the non-comorbid group. Furthermore, the partial correlation analysis showed that GMV of the right MFG was associated with poor executive function (EF) performance in comorbid patients. Conclusion: These findings provide valuable insight into the relationship between the alteration of GMV and cognitive dysfunction of MDD patients with comorbid SHypo.

OBJECTIVES: Malnutrition is a serious complication frequently observed in dialysis patients. Therefore, nutrition status evaluation and the early identification of malnutrition are clinically important. Trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO) is reportedly associated with deteriorating metabolic profiles and cardiovascular diseases. The aim of our study was to investigate correlations between circulating TMAO levels and malnutrition and the risk of major adverse cardiovascular events in patients on maintenance hemodialysis. METHODS: This retrospective observational study involved 228 subjects. Fasting plasma TMAO levels were detected using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. RESULTS: TMAO levels were significantly elevated in patients with malnutrition (8728.78 ± 704.12 ng/mL) when compared with those without (6532.1 ± 570.41 ng/mL, P < .01). TMAO levels were positively correlated with Subjective Global Assessment scores (ρ = 0.56, P = .02) and were independent risk factors for malnutrition after adjustment for multiple traditional risk factors (odds ratio = 2.07, 95% confidence interval: 1.41-3.62, P < .01). Furthermore, TMAO levels were good predictors of major adverse cardiovascular events in a 2-year follow-up period (area under the curve = 0.68, P < .01) and accuracy was increased to 74% when TMAO levels were combined with Subjective Global Assessment scores (area under the curve = 0.74, P = .02). CONCLUSIONS: Elevated TMAO levels were independently associated with a risk of malnutrition and cardiovascular disease, and could be a useful predictive biomarker for risk stratification and cardiovascular disease management for patients on dialysis.

Molecular imprinting technique is becoming an appealing and prominent strategy to synthesize materials for target recognition and rapid separation. In recent years, it has been applied in separation of active compounds from various plants and has achieved satisfying results. This review aims to make a brief introduction of molecular imprinting polymers and their efficient application in the separation of various active components from plants, including flavonoids, organic acids, alkaloids, phenylpropanoids, anthraquinones, phenolics, terpenes, steroids, and diketones, which will provide some clues to help stimulating research into this fascinating and useful area.

RESUMO

Exosomes are lipid-bilayer enclosed vesicles with diameters of 30-150 nm, which play a pivotal role in cell communication by transporting their cargoes such as proteins, lipids, and genetic materials. In recent years, exosomes have been under intense investigation, as they show great promise in numerous areas, especially as bio-markers in liquid biopsies. However, due to the high heterogeneity and the nano size of exosomes, the separation of exosomes is not easy. This review will deliver an outline of the conventional methods and the microfluidic-based technologies for exosome separation. Particular attention is devoted to microfluidic devices, highlighting the efficiency of exosome isolation by these methods. Additionally, this review will introduce advances made in the integrated microfluidics technologies that enable the separation and analysis of exosomes.

Background: Previous research studies have demonstrated that impaired interoception is involved in emotional information processing in major depressive disorder (MDD). Heartbeat-evoked potential (HEP) amplitudes, an index for interoception, could be manipulated by emotional faces in healthy people. Considering negative emotional bias is the core characteristic in MDD, we hypothesized that interoception dysfunction was associated with the negative emotional bias in MDD. Methods: An electroencephalogram (EEG) study under an emotional faces task was applied to explore the relationship between interoception and emotional bias. HEPs before emotional faces stimuli were used to predict the late positive potential (LPP) amplitudes and it worked as an index of emotional bias. Twenty-seven patients with MDD and 27 healthy controls (HCs) participated in this study. Source analysis gave an auxiliary description for results in sensory level. Results: Major depressive disorders (MDDs) had poor performance in the heartbeat count task (HCT) and attenuate HEP average amplitudes (455-550 ms). Compared with HCs, cluster-based permutation t-tests revealed that MDDs had attenuated LPP amplitudes (300-1,000 ms) over centroparietal regions and enhanced LPP amplitudes over frontocentral regions. Furthermore, abnormal attenuated HEPs could predict aberrant LPPs under sad face stimuli in MDDs, which could be associated with the dysfunction of the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) and right insula. Conclusion: Mediated by ACC and insula, interoception dysfunction contributes to the negative emotional bias of MDD, highlighting the importance of interoception in the disorder.

BACKGROUND: Major depressive disorder (MDD) with non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI)(MDD/NSSI) has been found to differ from simple MDD without NSSI (sMDD). This study analyzes the amplitude of low-frequency fluctuations (ALFF) to explore the NSSI-relevant local neural activity, and uses functional connectivity (FC) analysis to explore the NSSI-relevant circuits corresponding to alterations in local regions in young adult patients with MDD/NSSI. METHODS: A total of 54 patients with MDD/NSSI, 68 patients with sMDD, and 66 matched healthy controls (HCs) were recruited. ALFF and seed-based FC analyses were employed. The NSSI-relevant brain alteration and its associations with clinical variables were examined. RESULTS: Compared with the sMDD group, the MDD/NSSI group showed higher ALFF in the right lingual gyrus and right middle occipital gyrus; lower ALFF in the right superior frontal gyrus; higher FC values between the right lingual gyrus and left precentral gyrus; and lower FC values between the right middle occipital gyrus and right paracentral gyrus. Within the MDD/NSSI group, ALFF values of the right superior frontal gyrus and right lingual gyrus were positively correlated with the frequency and severity of NSSI. LIMITATIONS: The sample size was small, and the potential influence of medicine on brain activity was not excluded. CONCLUSIONS: Our preliminary findings indicate that NSSI-relevant ALFF in the right lingual gyrus, right middle occipital gyrus, and right superior frontal gyrus, as well as the alteration FCs in corresponding brain circuits, may play an important role in the neural basis of MDD/NSSI.

The present study was aimed to investigate the relationships between serum thyroid hormones (THs), frontal gray matter volume, and executive function in selected patients with major depressive disorder (MDD). One hundred and four MDD patients and seventy-five healthy controls (HCs) were subjected to thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), free Triiodothyronine (fT3), free Thyroxine (fT4), and executive function tests and underwent structural magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Voxel-based morphometry (VBM) analysis was performed to compare group differences in the gray matter for the frontal lobe. Furthermore, mediation analysis was used to investigate whether gray matter volumes of the frontal gyrus mediated the relationship between serum THs and executive function in MDD patients. MDD patients exhibited significant gray matter volume reduction in several brain regions, including the left rectus, right middle frontal cortex, and left middle frontal cortex. Serum TSH levels are positively associated with altered regional gray matter volume patterns within MFG and executive function. Importantly, gray matter in the right MFG was a significant mediator between serum TSH levels and executive function. These findings expand our understanding of how thyroid function affects brain structure changes and executive function in MDD patients.
