RESUMO

Lithium-sulfur batteries represent a promising class of next-generation rechargeable energy storage technologies, primarily because of their high-capacity sulfur cathode, reversible battery chemistry, low toxicity, and cost-effectiveness. However, they lack a tailored cell material and configuration for enhancing their high electrochemical utilization and stability. This study introduces a cross-disciplinary concept involving cost-efficient cement and sulfur to prepare a cement/sulfur energy storage material. Although cement has low conductivity and porosity, our findings demonstrate that its robust polysulfide adsorption capability is beneficial in the design of a cathode composite. The cathode composite attains enhanced cell fabrication parameters, featuring a high sulfur content and loading of 80 wt% and 6.4 mg cm-2, respectively. The resulting cell with the cement/sulfur cathode composite exhibits high active-material retention and utilization, resulting in a high charge storage capacity of 1189 mA∙h g-1, high rate performance across C/20 to C/3 rates, and an extended lifespan of 200 cycles. These attributes contribute to excellent cell performance values, demonstrating areal capacities ranging from 4.59 to 7.61 mA∙h cm-2, an energy density spanning 9.63 to 15.98 mW∙h cm-2, and gravimetric capacities between 573 and 951 mA∙h g-1 per electrode. Therefore, this study pioneers a new approach in lithium-sulfur battery research, opting for a nonporous material with robust polysulfide adsorption capabilities, namely cement. It effectively showcases the potential of the resulting cement/sulfur cathode composite to enhance fabrication feasibility, cell fabrication parameters, and cell performance values.

Structural members made of ultra-high-performance concrete (UHPC) have been attractive to engineers and researchers due to their superior mechanical properties and durability. However, existing studies were focused on the behavior of UHPC members reinforced with micro straight steel fibers at a volume fraction between 1 and 3%. There is a lack of studies on the influence of different types and amounts of fibers on the shear behavior of UHPC structural members. The objective of the study was to experimentally investigate the shear behavior of UHPC beams with macro hooked-end steel (MHS) fibers and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) fibers, which are two of the most used fibers for high-performance fiber-reinforced cementitious composites. The shear behavior of ten large-scale non-prestressed UHPC beams was studied. The experimental parameters included the shear span-to-effective depth ratio, the fiber volume fraction, and the type of fibers. It was found that both MHS fibers and PVA fibers were effective in enhancing the shear performance of the UHPC beams whether the shear transfer mechanism was governed by arch action or beam action. Moreover, the measurement results of the average crack spacing imply the distinct difference in the fiber bridging effects of the MHS fibers and PVA fibers in the UHPC beams.

Engineered Cementitious Composites (ECC) exhibit high ductility accompanied by multiple narrow cracking behavior under uniaxial tension. The study experimentally investigated the influence of sodium lignosulfonate and high volumes of fly ash (HVFA) on the properties of fresh and hardened ECC, with the experimental variables including the amounts of fly ash, polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) fibers, and sodium lignosulfonate. The test results were discussed extensively in terms of the initial and final setting times, compressive and tensile behavior, and drying and autogenous shrinkage. The results indicated that the initial and final setting times of ECC were increased along with the sodium lignosulfonate content of up to 1%. The drying shrinkage development was governed by the first 14 days. In addition, the major autogenous shrinkage developed for more than 28 days. The amounts of fly ash, PVA fibers, and sodium lignosulfonate considerably impacted the autogenous shrinkage. Moreover, it was found that the dosage of sodium lignosulfonate at 0.5% of the weight of Portland cement optimally reduced the shrinkage and enhanced the tensile strain capacity for ECC.
