RESUMO

Time-varying metasurfaces are emerging as a powerful instrument for the dynamical control of the electromagnetic properties of a propagating wave. Here we demonstrate an efficient time-varying metasurface based on plasmonic nano-antennas strongly coupled to an epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) deeply subwavelength film. The plasmonic resonance of the metal resonators strongly interacts with the optical ENZ modes, providing a Rabi level spitting of ∼30%. Optical pumping at frequency ω induces a nonlinear polarization oscillating at 2ω responsible for an efficient generation of a phase conjugate and a negative refracted beam with a conversion efficiency that is more than 4 orders of magnitude greater compared to the bare ENZ film. The introduction of a strongly coupled plasmonic system therefore provides a simple and effective route towards the implementation of ENZ physics at the nanoscale.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To determine the seroprevalence of toxoplasma antibodies toxoplasma IgG and toxoplasma IgM) among an antenatal population in a hospital of Bangladesh. METHODS: Sera from 286 pregnant women were tested for toxoplasma IgG antibody by applying enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) technique. Among the 286 sera, 88 sera were randomly selected and tested for toxoplasma IgM applying ELISA. RESULTS: Among 286 patients 110 (38.5%) were positive for toxoplasma IgG antibody and among 88 patients only one (1.1%) was positive for toxoplasma IgM. The seroprevalence gradually increased with age and parity. The seroprevalence of antibody was higher among the women in poor (53.0%) than the upper socio-economic class (22.0%) and among the women with jobs (55.0%) than the housewife group (35.0%). CONCLUSION: This study shows that toxoplasmosis is endemic in Bangladesh and also affecting pregnant women. There is need for further detailed studies on toxoplasmosis and its influence on perinatal morbidity and mortality.

RESUMO

In order to evaluate the potential clinical and economic benefits of granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF, filgrastim) following peripheral blood progenitor cells (PBPC) rescue after high-dose chemotherapy (HDCT), 23 consecutive patients aged less than 60 years with poor-prognosis, high-grade non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) were entered into a prospective randomized trial between May 1993 and September 1995. Patients were randomized to receive either PBPC alone (n = 12) or PBPC+G-CSF (n = 11) after HDCT with busulphan and cyclophosphamide. G-CSF (300 microg day[-1]) was given from day +5 until recovery of granulocyte count to greater than 1.0 x 10(9) l(-1) for 2 consecutive days. The mean time to achieve a granulocyte count > 0.5 x 10(9) l(-1) was significantly shorter in the G-CSF arm (9.7 vs 13.2 days; P<0.0001) as was the median duration of hospital stay (12 vs 15 days; P = 0.001). In addition the recovery periods (range 9-12 vs 11-17 days to achieve a count of 1.0 x 10(9) l[-1]) and hospital stays (range 11-14 vs 13-22 days) were significantly less variable in patients receiving G-CSF in whom the values clustered around the median. There were no statistically significant differences between the study arms in terms of days of fever, documented episodes of bacteraemia, antimicrobial drug usage and platelet/red cell transfusion requirements. Taking into account the costs of total occupied-bed days, drugs, growth factor usage and haematological support, the mean expenditure per inpatient stay was pound sterling 6500 (range pound sterling 5465-pound sterling 8101) in the G-CSF group compared with pound sterling 8316 (range pound sterling 5953-pound sterling 15,801) in the group not receiving G-CSF, with an observed mean saving of 1816 per patient (or 22% of the total cost) in the G-CSF group. This study suggests that after HDCT and PBPC rescue, the use of G-CSF leads to more rapid haematological recovery periods and is associated with a more predictable and shorter hospital stay. Furthermore, and despite the additional costs for G-CSF, these clinical benefits are not translated into increased health care expenditure.

RESUMO

We have been interested in the clinical use of capillary electrophoresis (CE) to monitor low-molecular-mass uremic toxins in body fluids. Creatinine, an important clinical marker for renal failure, is zwitterionic over a fairly wide pH range (pH 5-9) and can not be resolved from neutral components using free solution CE under these conditions. We report here a micellar electrokinetic capillary chromatography method using an sodium dodecyl sulfate-borate buffer system at pH 9.0 to determine creatinine levels in human serum. This method, performed on deproteinized sera, is also suitable for determining multiple ionic components. Moreover, this method compares favorably with an enzymatic method for creatinine performed in a clinical laboratory and thus appears to be a promising method in terms of potential clinical use.
