BACKGROUND: Complex training is found effective in improving physical performance in various sports. There is a paucity of research evidence comparing the efficacy of complex vs. plyometric training in cricket players. The study aimed to compare the efficacy of complex and plyometric training on physical performance parameters in cricket players. METHODS: Participants (n = 42 Male; age group = 18-26 years) were randomly allocated into three groups, complex training group (CTG) (n = 14; BMI = 20.51 ± 2.23), plyometric training group (PTG) (n = 14; BMI = 20.57 ± 2.82), and control group (CG) (n = 14; BMI = 20.51 ± 2.23). CTG and PTG received their respective training twice weekly, and CG received routine training for four weeks. Pre and post-intervention assessments of core muscle strength (CM), multistage fitness (MF), push-up (PU), lateral cone jump (LCJ), and stationary vertical jump (SVJ) were performed. This study has been registered in clinicaltrials.gov (ID: NCT05646914, on 05/12/2022). RESULTS: A significant difference was observed between CTG vs. CG for CM (p ≤ 0.01), LCJ (p < 0.05), and SVJ (p ≤ 0.01), similarly in PTG vs. CG for CM (p-value), LCJ (p ≤ 0.05) and SVJ (p ≤ 0.01). However, No significant difference was found between PTG vs. CTG for any variables (p ≥ 0.05). Also, No significant difference in MF and PU was found between the groups (p ≥ 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Complex training has been found to have effects similar to plyometric training alone. Therefore, either of the two strategies can be used to improve the performance of male cricket players.

In conjunction with the third regional Southeast Asian (SEA) therapeutic plasma exchange (TPE) conference in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, 25 clinicians and researchers from SEA and South Asian countries attended the inaugural strategy meeting for the establishment of a regional TPE consortium for neurological disorders. The primary objective was to establish regional collaboration to improve delivery of TPE services in SEA. A pre-meeting survey was conducted to gather insights on disease spectrum, contextual practice challenges, and the need for a regional TPE consensus. Challenges identified include limited healthcare funding in support of diagnostic workup, TPE therapy, as well as development of clinical infrastructure and expertise capacity building. There was favorable interest in developing a working plan contextualized to this region. Strategies to overcome challenges were discussed. This included the need for a comprehensive referral system and network of regional TPE centers suited to local needs, supported by innovative TPE delivery programs.

Mitochondrial DNA plays an important role in cellular sensitivity to cancer therapeutic agents. Hoechst 33342, a DNA minor groove binding ligand, has shown radiosensitizing effects in different cancer cell lines. In the present study, the possible binding of Hoechst 33342 with mitochondrial DNA, isolated from human cerebral glioma (BMG-1) cells, was investigated and consequences of this binding on excessive reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation in irradiated BMG-1 cells were studied. Alteration in the fluorescence spectroscopic characteristics of Hoechst 33342 suggested binding of Hoechst 33342 with isolated mitochondria and mitochondrial DNA. Persistent increase in level of ROS in the presence of Hoechst 33342 has been observed, which was further enhanced in irradiated cells. Investigations using inhibitors of ETC complex I suggested that mitochondrial bound Hoechst 33342 contributed to increased ROS, which was associated with alteration in DeltaPsim and antioxidant machinery. These factors appeared to contribute in potentiating radiation-induced cell death in BMG-1 cells. The finding from these studies will be useful in designing better anti-cancer strategies.
