RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Recent studies have investigated the relationship between pain perception and specific phenotypes such as red hair color and various eye colors. Further investigations into biomarkers as they relate to pain could be useful in understanding underlying genetic components involved in these pathways. Additionally, it would be clinically useful to determine if a patient would be more likely to experience pain during dental treatment based on eye color. The purpose of this study was to investigate a link between eye color and perceived injection pain in healthy, asymptomatic white women. METHODS: Three hundred healthy, adult, white female patients were included, 133 with dark eyes and 167 with light eyes. Dental anxiety was assessed with the Corah Dental Anxiety Scale. Subjects with their eye color masked by dark glasses received a right maxillary lateral incisor infiltration of 1 cartridge of 2% lidocaine with 1:100,000 epinephrine. Patients rated their injection pain on a 170-mm Heft-Parker visual analog scale. Photographs of the subjects' eyes were taken after the infiltrations and categorized into dark- and light-eyed groups by 3 independent observers. Comparisons for injection pain were analyzed using analysis of variance and the Tukey-Kramer test. RESULTS: No significant differences were found for pain of injection between dark- or light-eyed subjects. CONCLUSIONS: Eye color was not shown to be a predictor for injection pain in white women. Therefore, eye color would not be clinically useful in determining if a patient would be more likely to experience pain during dental treatment.

RESUMO

Electrodeposition is a widely used materials-deposition technology with a number of unique features, in particular, the efficient use of starting materials, conformal, and directed coating. The properties of the solvent medium for electrodeposition are critical to the technique's applicability. Supercritical fluids are unique solvents which give a wide range of advantages for chemistry in general, and materials processing in particular. However, a widely applicable approach to electrodeposition from supercritical fluids has not yet been developed. We present here a method that allows electrodeposition of a range of metals from supercritical carbon dioxide, using acetonitrile as a co-solvent and supercritical difluoromethane. This method is based on a careful selection of reagent and supporting electrolyte. There are no obvious barriers preventing this method being applied to deposit a range of materials from many different supercritical fluids. We present the deposition of 3-nm diameter nanowires in mesoporous silica templates using this methodology.

RESUMO

Oncocytic tumors of the major salivary glands are rare, accounting for less than 1% of all salivary gland tumors. When they do occur, these neoplasms typically present as solitary nodules that affect only one major salivary gland, usually the parotid. Multiple bilateral multinodular tumors are rare. We report the case of a 53-year-old woman with a case of synchronous multiple bilateral multinodular oncocytomas that arose in a background of bilateral oncocytic nodular hyperplasia in the parotid glands. The patient underwent superficial parotid resections, and at the 4-year follow-up, she exhibited no evidence of recurrence.

RESUMO

Rich and complex Raman scattering and Raman optical activity (ROA) spectra have been measured monitoring the pH induced alpha-helix-to-disordered conformational transition in poly(L-glutamic acid). Two-dimensional (2D) correlation techniques have been applied to facilitate a comprehensive analysis of these two complementary spectral sets. Synchronous contour plots have identified band assignments of alpha-helical and disordered conformations, and have revealed bands characteristic of changes in the protonation state of the polypeptide. Asynchronous plots, on the other hand, have probed the relative sequential orders of intensity changes indicating a decrease in intensity of alpha-helical bands in the backbone skeletal stretch region, followed by a subsequent decrease in intensity in the extended amide III and amide I regions, underlying the appearance of disordered structure, including poly(L-proline) II (PPII) helix. The application of a 2D correlation 'moving' window has also disclosed two distinct phases during helix unfolding in the alpha-helix-to-disordered transition, occurring at approximately pH 4.9 and approximately pH 5.2, possibly a result of the difference in helical stability between the end and central regions of the alpha-helix. This paper demonstrates the potential value of combining 2D Raman, 2D ROA and moving window correlation techniques for the detailed investigation of complex and subtle changes of secondary structure during the unfolding mechanisms of polypeptides and proteins.

RESUMO

A new approach for optimization and monitoring of continuous reactions has been developed using 2D correlation methods for the analysis of GC data (2DCOR-GC). 2DCOR-GC maps are obtained following perturbation of the system that allow the effect of changing reaction parameters such as time, temperature, pressure, or concentration to be both monitored and sequenced with regard to changes in the raw GC data. In this paper, we describe the application of the 2DCOR-GC technique to monitoring the reverse water-gas shift reaction in scCO(2). 2DCOR-GC is combined with FT-IR data to validate the methodology. We also report the application of 2DCOR-GC to probe the mechanism of the alkylation of m-cresol with isopropyl alcohol in scCO(2) using Nafion SAC-13 as the catalyst. These results identify coeluting peaks that could easily be missed without exhaustive method development.

RESUMO

The high temperature catalytic decomposition of HCO2H and HCO2Et are used to generate the high pressure H2 and the supercritical fluids needed for micro-scale hydrogenation of organic compounds; our approach overcomes the problems and limitations of handling high pressure gases on a small-scale and opens the way to the widespread use of continuous supercritical reactions in the laboratory.

RESUMO

Chronic myelomonocytic leukemia with eosinophilia is a recently defined rare entity frequently associated with t(5;12)(q33;p13) translocation. It usually shows a peripheral eosinophil count greater than 1500/microL. However, the literature contains a small subset of cases in which the major manifestation is bone marrow eosinophilia. We report a case similar to that subset and discuss our finding that the immature eosinophils are identical to those seen in acute myelomonocytic leukemia with abnormal bone marrow eosinophils.
