RESUMO

Collinear phase matching of the Stokes ↔ anti-Stokes interaction for Raman-active crystals with different birefringence was studied theoretically as well as experimentally. It was shown that collinear phase matching of the Stokes ↔ anti-Stokes interaction in low-birefringent crystals can be insensitive to angular mismatch if a phase matching angle is higher than 60°. We have developed and experimentally realized an extracavity parametric Raman anti-Stokes laser based on a low-birefringent SrWO4. Cyan 507-nm anti-Stokes conversion from green (532 nm) pump radiation of a 5-ns, 1-mJ second harmonic Nd:YAG laser has been obtained. Laser setup with a single beam excitation made it possible to use an output face of the SrWO4 crystal as an output coupler because of wide (6°) angular tolerance of collinear phase matching that resulted in an increase of slope efficiency of anti-Stokes generation higher than 3% at the anti-Stokes energy output of a 10-µJ level.

The stability of ferroelectric domain patterns at the nanoscale has been a topic of much interest for many years. We investigated the relaxation of the polarized state created by application of a local electric field using a conductive tip of a scanning probe microscope for the model uniaxial relaxor system SrxBa1-xNb2O6 (SBN) in its pure and Ce-doped form. The temporal relaxation of the induced PFM contrast was measured at various temperatures. The average value of the induced contrast decreases during heating for all investigated crystals. Below the freezing temperature the induced state remains stable after an initial relaxation. Above the freezing temperature the induced state is unstable and gradually decays with time. The stability of the induced state is strongly affected by the measuring conditions, so continuous scanning results in a faster decay of the poled domain. The obtained effects are attributed to a decrease of the induced polarization and backswitching of the polarized area under the action of the depolarization field.

We report a neutron scattering study of the ferroelectric phase transition in Sr0.585Ce0.025Ba0.39Nb2O6 (SBN-61:Ce). We find no evidence for a soft transverse optic phonon. We do, however, observe anisotropic diffuse scattering. This scattering has inelastic and elastic contributions. In the paraelectric phase the susceptibility associated with the elastic diffuse scattering from SBN-61:Ce increases on approaching the transition temperature. In the ferroelectric phase the lineshape of the elastic scattering is consistent with the form expected for the ferroelectric domain walls. In contrast to the macroscopic observations, the scattering properties of Ce-doped crystal do not exhibit important changes with respect to those of pure Sr0.61Ba0.39Nb2O6.

RESUMO

We report a neutron scattering study of a ferroelectric phase transition in Sr0.61Ba0.39Nb2O6 (SBN-61). The ferroelectric polarization is along the crystallographic c-axis but the transverse acoustic branch propagating along the 〈1, 1, 0〉 direction does not show any anomaly associated with this transition. We find no evidence for a soft transverse optic phonon. We do, however, observe elastic diffuse scattering. The intensity of this scattering increases as the sample is cooled from a temperature well above the phase transition. The susceptibility associated with this diffuse scattering follows the anomaly of the dielectric permittivity of SBN-61 well. Below Tc the shape of this scattering is consistent with the scattering expected from ferroelectric domain walls. Our results suggest that despite apparent chemical disorder SBN-61 behaves as a classic order-disorder uniaxial ferroelectric with critical fluctuations in the range <10(-11) s.
