Background: Impact/impulse and continuous noise are two main causes of noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) in workplaces. The aim of this study was to compare the effects of impulse/impact noise and continuous noise on hearing status. Methods: In this study, 259 workers referred to the occupational medicine clinic of Shahid Rahnemoun hospital, Yazd, Iran, entered the study and were divided into two groups: with exposure to impact/impulse noise and with exposure to continuous noise. Hearing thresholds were measured and compared between the two groups by pure-tone audiometry (PTA). The frequency of hearing loss and audiometric notch according to the results of PTA was compared between the two groups. Data were analyzed by SPSS (ver. 16) using Student's t-test, Chi-square test, and Mann-Whitney U test. Results: Hearing thresholds were significantly higher at all frequencies in the impact noise group. The hearing threshold at 6000 Hz was higher than other frequencies in both groups. The frequency of hearing loss at high frequencies was higher in the impact group. The frequency of audiometric notch was not significantly different between the two groups. Conclusions: The results of this study showed that hearing loss after exposure to impact/impulse noise is probably more frequent and more severe than exposure to continuous noise, but the pattern of hearing loss is similar in both types of noise exposure.

The study of natural resources in the earth sciences focuses on the sustainable management of valuable materials like dimension stones. the quarrying of dimension stones is associated with environmental challenges such as significant amounts of waste production, and resource loss, mainly caused by discontinuities and fractures in the rock mass. Quarry optimization requires an optimal cutting pattern to increase the production of larger blocks while minimizing parameters that affect operational costs such as energy consumption. The algorithms used in the quarrying only focus on the number of blocks extracted, ignoring other factors such as energy consumption in the cutting of blocks. To address this issue, a new algorithm was developed in this study. The algorithm aims to optimize the quarrying process by analyzing the impact of discontinuities on waste production and cutting surfaces. It then provides an optimal cutting pattern for the quarry face based on the optimal value of these parameters. As a result, the use of this algorithm can serve as an efficient and valuable tool in dimension stone quarries. By implementing this algorithm, production costs, energy, and water consumption, cutting tools consumption, and waste production can be significantly reduced, leading to increased quarry profitability and decreased environmental problems.

INTRODUCTION: Helicobacter pylori is a gram-negative spiral bacterium that is frequently found in the human stomach. Significant association has been reported between Cytotoxin associated gene A (CagA)- positive Helicobacter pylori strains and coronary heart disease. The aim of the present study is to investigate the carotid intima-media thickness as an indicator of atherosclerosis in people with Helicobacter pylori infection. METHODS: This study was done on patients who underwent upper GI endoscopy and biopsy, and after obtaining conscious consent underwent ultrasound of the right and left carotid arteries for measuring carotid intima-media thickness (CIMT) and blood tests. RESULTS: In this study, 90 patients who underwent upper GI endoscopy were examined in three groups: negative H. pylori negative, positive cagA and negative cagA. The right, left and average of CIMT in cagA-positive group were significantly higher than the other two groups (p < 0.05). Howerver, the average of CIMT was not significantly different between men and women. Also, the hsCRP average level in positive cagA group was significantly higher than other groups (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION: Our findings suggest that there is an increase in CIMT values in patients with H. pylori infection, especially in cases of positive cagA. The positive cagA group showed significantly higher levels of hs-CRP, as a marker of elevated inflammatory response. Therefore, H. pylori infection, especially cagA-positive strains and its associated systemic inflammatory response can be considered as a contributing factor in atherosclerosis and cardiovascular disease.

BACKGROUND: Since late 2019, SARS-CoV-2 which leads to coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), has caused thousands of deaths. There are some pieces of evidence that SARS-CoV-2 genome could be re-detectable in recovered patients. METHODS: We performed a systematic review in the PubMed/Medline database to address the risk of SARS-CoV-2 recurrence. The last update was for 20 November 2020. Among the 1178 initially found articles, 66 met the inclusion criteria and were considered. FINDINGS: In total, 1128 patients with at least one-time recurrence of SARS-CoV-2 were included. Recurrence rate has been reported between 2.3% and 21.4% in cohort studies, within a mean of 20 (ranged 1-98) days after discharge; younger patients are being affected more. Following the second course of disease, the disease severity decreased or remained unchanged in 97.3% while it increased in 2.6%. Anti-SARS-CoV-2 IgG and IgM were positive in 11-95% and 58.8-100%, respectively. Based on the literature, three possibilities include reactivation of previous disease, reinfection with the same virus, and false negative, which have been discussed in details. CONCLUSION: There is a relatively notable risk of disease recurrence in previously recovered patients, even those who are immunised against the virus. More studies are required to clarify the underlying cause of this phenomenon.

Aim: This paper aims to study in-vitro and in-vivo evaluation of chitosan (CHI) biocomposite of gentamicin nanoparticles (GNPs) for wound healing. Methods: In this study, CHI nanoparticles (NPs) were prepared using the ionic gelation technique. GNP biocomposites were examined on the excision wound model in Wistar rats to determine the in-vivo efficiency. Results: The diameter and zeta potential of NPs were between 151-212.9 nm and 37.2 - 51.1 mV, respectively. The entrapment efficiency was in an acceptable range of 36.6-42.7% w/w. The release test information was fitted to mathematical models (Zero, First order, Higuchi, and Korsmeyer-Peppas), and according to calculations, the kinetics of drug release followed the Korsmeyer-Peppas model. A comparison of thermograms revealed that the drug was present in the formulation in a non-crystalline form. Conclusion: Histological studies of the wound showed that the rate of skin tissue repair was higher in the GNP biocomposite treatment group than in the others.

INTRODUCTION: Exposure to high intensity noise produced by MRI is a cause for concern. This study was conducted to determine the temporary and permanent effects of exposure to noise created by performing MRI on the hearing threshold of the subjects using conventional and extended high frequency audiometry. METHODS: This semiexperimental study was performed on 35 patients referred to Shahid Rahnemoun Hospital for head and neck MRI due to different clinical conditions. The hearing threshold of patients was measured before, immediately after, and 24 hours after performing 1.5 Tesla MRI using conventional and extended high frequency audiometry. SPSS version 18 was used to compare the mean hearing thresholds before and after MRI using paired T test and repeated measures analysis. RESULTS: Comparison of auditory thresholds in conventional and extended high frequencies before and immediately after MRI showed a significant shift at 4 KHz (P = 0.008 and P = 0.08 for right and left ears), 6 KHz (P = 0.03 and P = 0.01 for right and left ears), and 14 KHz (P =0.03 and P = 0.31 for right and left ears). However, there was no significant difference between audiometric thresholds before and 24 hours after MRI. CONCLUSION: Noise due to 1.5 Tesla MRI can only cause transient threshold shift.

Nonaqueous foams were successfully produced by mechanically beating air into liquid epoxy resin, surfactant, and silica particle mixtures and used as templates to produce macroporous polymers. The air bubbles introduced into the epoxy formulations served as templates for the pores of the cured epoxy foams. The addition of silica particles into the resin mixture resulted in an increased viscosity of the formulation, thus enhancing the stability of the liquid epoxy froths, which could then be thermally cured at 60 °C. Increasing the silica loading in the formulation resulted in an increase of the foam density and decrease of the average pore size of the epoxy foams. The epoxy foams containing silica exhibited a hierarchical pore structure, where large pores were surrounded by smaller pores, and enhanced stiffness as compared to the control epoxy foams with a monomodal pore size distribution.

INTRODUCTION: At present, about 1% of newborns are delivered through assisted reproductive technologies (ART) worldwide. This study aimed to evaluate and compare the growth parameters of children born in assisted and natural conception at 5 years of age. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In a cross-sectional case control study, weight, height and head circumference of 5-year old children were assessed. The case group consisted of term, singleton babies who were products of ART in the Center for Infertility of Shahid Sadoughi University, Yazd, Iran in 2005. The control group consisted of term, fi rst child, singleton and spontaneously conceived 5-year-old children who were referred for vaccination to primary health care center of Shahid Akbari in 2010. RESULTS: Fifty-eight girls (47.5%) and 64 boys (52.5%) "with equal numbers in each of the 2 groups" were evaluated. Sex distribution, mean ages of fathers and mothers were not statistically significant different in both groups. Children born after ART tend to have lower birth weight, smaller birth head circumference and lower weight at 5 years of age. Having low birth weight (<2500 g), being underweight and having short stature at the age of 5 were more common in babies born through ART. CONCLUSION: Growth retardation is more prevalent in babies born through ART. Thus, growth assessment, parents' knowledge about child physical development, and timely and accurate follow-up of these children are necessary for early detection of any growth disorders.
