RESUMO

The sluggish kinetics for anodic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and insufficient catalytic performance over the corresponding Ir-based catalysts are still enormous challenges in proton exchange membrane water electrolyzer (PEMWE). Herein, it is reported that KIr4O8 nanowires anode catalyst with more exposed active sites and rich hydroxyl achieves a current density of 1.0 A cm-2 at 1.68 V and possesses excellent catalytic stability with 1230 h in PEMWE. Combining in situ Raman spectroscopy and differential electrochemical mass spectroscopy results, the modified adsorbate evolution mechanism is proposed, wherein the rich hydroxyl in the inherent structure of KIr4O8 nanowires directly participates in the catalytic process for favoring the OER. Density functional theory calculation results further suggest that the enhanced proximity between Ir (d) and O (p) band center in KIr4O8 can strengthen the covalence of Ir-O, facilitate the electron transfer between adsorbents and active sites, and decrease the energy barrier of rate-determining step from OH* to O* during the OER.

RESUMO

6-mercaptopurine (6MP) is a chemotherapeuticdrug widely used for treating inflammatory bowel diseases and several cancers. Nevertheless, determining and monitoring its concentration in the human body is highly important because over or under-doses of 6MP can lead to critical health issues. In this paper, we have developed a turn-on fluorescent probe for the determination of the anticancer drug 6-mercaptopurine (6-MP) based on coordination complex [Nd (Anth)3 (H2O)3]. [Nd (Anth)3 (H2O)3] has been synthesized through a simple precipitation process taking the stoichiometric ratio of Nd (III) nitrate hexahydrate and 2-aminobenzoic acid (2-ABA), commonly known as anthranilic acid (Anth). The synthesis and structure have been investigated and validated by different characterizations like UV-visible spectroscopy, FT-IR, HRMS, XPS, and SEM. The synthesized complex displayed excellent fluorescence properties, and the fluorescence intensity was enhanced with the addition of 6MP in the form of a [Fe (6MP)3]2+ mixed complex (Fe-6MP), which is formed by dissolving it in FeCl3. The fabricated sensors displayed the best linear response in a wide range of concentrations from 2.55 µM to 45.51 µM of 6MP. The lower limit of detection (LOD) of the developed sensor was found to be 0.26 µM with a linear correlation coefficient (R2) of 0.99. The synthesized probe gives an acceptable response for the sensing of 6MP in the presence of several interfering agents.

RESUMO

Metal nanoparticles (NPs) can be employed to modify the emission level of a dye emitter by tailoring the spectral overlap of the optical gain and localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR). In the case of plasmonic random lasers, tuning the spectral overlap by manipulating metal NPs changes the scattering properties of the system, which is crucial in random lasers (RLs). In order to overcome this drawback, the emitter gain spectrum across the LSPR is tuned by appropriately choosing various dye emitters. A system with Au nanoislands (NIs) randomly distributed on the surface of vertically aligned ZnO nanorods on a glass substrate coated with three different dye emitters has been employed to study the metal-gain interaction as a function of spectral overlap. It is observed that the photoluminescence is quenched in the presence of Au NIs for all the three dye emitters; however, the degree of quenching is found to be directly proportional to the extent of spectral overlap of the LSPR and the fluorophore emission spectrum, with the resonantly coupled systems exhibiting higher random lasing thresholds. However, a dequenching of the emission is observed under spectrally off-resonant conditions, leading to a lower threshold RL. The effect of tailoring of the metal-gain interaction on the coherent and incoherent intensity components of RL emission is studied to elucidate the contrasting results of photoluminescence and RL emission. As the optical gain shifts away from the LSPR peak, the RL emission is dominated by the coherent intensity. The speckle-like field distributions of the RL modes couple to the plasmonic nanocavities along with a reduced absorption loss for the off-resonant case, leading to an enhanced stimulated emission. Hence, a synergy between random laser modes, plasmonic nanocavities and optimum spectral overlap has been utilized as a tool to dequench the plasmon quenched fluorophore emission.

RESUMO

Alterations in mRNA transcription have been associated with changes in brain functions. We wanted to examine if fear conditioning causes long-term changes in transcriptome profiles in the basolateral amygdala (BLA) and hippocampus using RNA-Seq and laser microdissection microscopy. We further aimed to uncover whether these changes are involved in memory formation by monitoring their levels in EphB2lacZ/lacZ mice, which lack EphB2 forward signaling and can form short-term fear conditioning memory but not long-term fear conditioning memory. We found transcriptome signatures unique to each brain region that are comprise of specific cellular pathways. We also revealed that fear conditioning leads to alterations in mRNAs levels 24 h after training in hippocampal neuropil, but not in hippocampal cell layers or BLA. The two main groups of altered mRNAs encode proteins involved in neuronal transmission, neuronal morphogenesis and neuronal development and the vast majority are known to be enriched in neurons. None of these mRNAs levels were altered by fear conditioning in EphB2lacZ/lacZ mice, which were also impaired in long-term fear memory. We show here that fear conditioning leads to an enduring alteration in mRNAs levels in hippocampal neuropil that is dependent on processes mediated by EphB2 that are needed for long-term memory formation.

RESUMO

Two dimensional (2D) van der Waals heterostructures (vdWHs) have unique potential in facilitating the stacking of layers of different 2D materials for optoelectronic devices with superior characteristics. However, the fabrication of large area all-2D heterostructures is still challenging towards realizing practical devices at a reduced cost. In the present work, we have demonstrated a rapid yet simple, impurity-free and efficient sonication-assisted chemical exfoliation approach to synthesize hybrid vdWHs based on 2D molybdenum disulphide (MoS2) and tungsten disulphide (WS2), with high yield. Microscopic and spectroscopic studies have confirmed the successful exfoliation of layered 2D materials and formation of their hybrid heterostructures. The co-existence of 2D MoS2and WS2in the vdWH hybrids is established by optical absorption and Raman shift measurements along with their chemical stiochiometry determined by x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The spectral response of the vdWH/Si (2D/3D) heterojunction photodetector fabricated using the as-synthesized material is found to exhibit broadband photoresponse compared to that of the individual 2D MoS2and WS2devices. The peak responsivity and detectivity are found to be as high as ∼2.15 A W-1and 2.05 × 1011Jones, respectively for an applied bias of -5 V. The ease of fabrication with appreciable performance of the chemically synthesized vdWH-based devices have revealed their potential use for large area optoelectronic applications on Si-compatible CMOS platforms.

RESUMO

Developing well-defined surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS)-active substrates with superior performance is potentially attractive for many areas of research such as new generation sensing and analysis. Here, a nanohybrid SERS platform has been developed by decorating two-dimensional (2D) tungsten diselenide (WSe2) flakes with zero-dimensional (0D) plasmonic gold nanoparticles (Au NPs). The morphology studies showed that under optimal conditions densely populated Au NPs were formed on the WSe2 surface. Here, we report the utility of the Au NPs/WSe2 nanohybrid structure as an efficient SERS substrate by performing concentration-dependent SERS measurements of a highly fluorescent molecule (Rhodamine 6G, R6G). The hybrid substrate displays promising SERS activity with the detection limit as low as 1 × 10-9 M, which is several orders of magnitude higher than the bare WSe2 on its own (10-3 M). The substrate also exhibits reliable signal stability and reproducibility. These results indicate that the nanohybrid structure has great potential in SERS applications.

RESUMO

The terminology choriostoma describes a tumor-like lesion belonging to hamartomatous group of pathology, that is, normal tissue found in abnormal location. Osseous choriostomas in oral cavity are rare and mostly the cases have been reported in tongue but rarely arising from the interdental gingiva. There are various pathological entities arising from gingiva that give a thought of wider differential diagnosis starting from inflammatory to traumatic origin. Hamartomas in oral cavity are very rare which can definitely be attributed to the sparse literature which leads to misdiagnosis as well failure to understand its biology. In this report, we present a case of osseous choriostoma arising from interdental gingiva in a young female patient in the lower arch.

RESUMO

We report the superior broadband photodetection characteristics of few-layer phosphorene known as black phosphorus (BP) nanosheets integrated with silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) using vertical heterojunctions on a Si platform. The exfoliation of BP nanosheets and preparation of an Ag NP:BP (Ag-BP) hybrid have been accomplished through environment-friendly and cost-effective chemical routes. The hybrid sample exhibits broadband light absorption with a strong plasmonic peak around ∼425 nm due to the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) of Ag NPs of average size ∼6.0 nm. Spectroscopic analysis of the Ag-BP hybrid ascertains strong light-matter interactions around the LSPR band of Ag NPs. The size-dependent optical response of BP nanostructure/Si state-of-the-art broadband (300-1600 nm) photodiodes has been studied extensively. The enhancement of broadband photoresponse characteristics is demonstrated using the plasmonic Ag-BP 0D-2D hybrid nanostructure compared to pristine BP, where the peak responsivity in the former is shifted to the visible region (∼440 nm) compared to UV response (∼340 nm) of the latter. The tunable spectral responsivity with a peak value of ∼3.2 A/W (@ ∼440 nm and -5 V) for the Ag-BP/Si heterojunction device demonstrates the potential of plasmonic BP hybrids for future nanophotonic devices.

RESUMO

Protein Kinase C (PKC) and extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK) regulate synaptic plasticity and memory. PKC activation enhances long-term potentiation (LTP) in the hippocampal slices. In addition, activation of PKC by phorbol 12,13-diacetate (PDA) induces ERK activation. However, the mechanisms involved in PDA-induced activation of ERK are not well understood. Using hippocampal slices, we report that PDA induces a sustained activation of ERK. PDA-induced sustained ERK activation critically requires protein synthesis as well as transcription, the cellular processes that play crucial roles in long-lasting LTP and memory. In addition, the mammalian target of rapamycin activity is required for PDA-induced sustained ERK activation. Further, we show that growth factor signalling plays a critical role in PDA-induced sustained ERK activation. These results suggest that sustained ERK activation may have an important role in LTP.
