RESUMO

The "symmetric mass generation" (SMG) quantum phase transition discovered in recent years has attracted great interest from both condensed matter and high energy theory communities. Here, interacting Dirac fermions acquire a gap without condensing any fermion bilinear mass term or any concomitant spontaneous symmetry breaking. It is hence beyond the conventional Gross-Neveu-Yukawa-Higgs paradigm. One important question we address in this Letter is whether the SMG transition corresponds to a true unitary conformal field theory. We employ the sharp diagnosis including the scaling of disorder operator and Rényi entanglement entropy in large-scale lattice model quantum Monte Carlo simulations. Our results strongly suggest that the SMG transition is indeed an unconventional quantum phase transition and it should correspond to a true (2+1)d unitary conformal field theory.

BACKGROUND: Chinese indigenous pigs are popular with consumers for their juiciness, flavour and meat quality, but they have lower meat production. Insulin-like growth factor 2 (IGF2) is a maternally imprinted growth factor that promotes skeletal muscle growth by regulating cell proliferation and differentiation. A single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) within intron 3 of porcine IGF2 disrupts a binding site for the repressor, zinc finger BED-type containing 6 (ZBED6), leading to up-regulation of IGF2 and causing major effects on muscle growth, heart size, and backfat thickness. This favorable mutation is common in Western commercial pig populations, but absent in most Chinese indigenous pig breeds. To improve meat production of Chinese indigenous pigs, we used cytosine base editor 3 (CBE3) to introduce IGF2-intron3-C3071T mutation into porcine embryonic fibroblasts (PEFs) isolated from a male Liang Guang Small Spotted pig (LGSS), and single-cell clones harboring the desired mutation were selected for somatic cell nuclear transfer (SCNT) to generate the founder line of IGF2T/T pigs. RESULTS: We found the heterozygous progeny IGF2C/T pigs exhibited enhanced expression of IGF2, increased lean meat by 18%-36%, enlarged loin muscle area by 3%-17%, improved intramuscular fat (IMF) content by 18%-39%, marbling score by 0.75-1, meat color score by 0.53-1.25, and reduced backfat thickness by 5%-16%. The enhanced accumulation of intramuscular fat in IGF2C/T pigs was identified to be regulated by the PI3K-AKT/AMPK pathway, which activated SREBP1 to promote adipogenesis. CONCLUSIONS: We demonstrated the introduction of IGF2-intron3-C3071T in Chinese LGSS can improve both meat production and quality, and first identified the regulation of IMF deposition by IGF2 through SREBP1 via the PI3K-AKT/AMPK signaling pathways. Our study provides a further understanding of the biological functions of IGF2 and an example for improving porcine economic traits through precise base editing.

RESUMO

The fermion disorder operator has been shown to reveal the entanglement information in 1D Luttinger liquids and 2D free and interacting Fermi and non-Fermi liquids emerging at quantum critical points (QCPs) [W. Jiang et al., arXiv:2209.07103]. Here we study, by means of large-scale quantum Monte Carlo simulation, the scaling behavior of the disorder operator in correlated Dirac systems. We first demonstrate the logarithmic scaling behavior of the disorder operator at the Gross-Neveu (GN) chiral Ising and Heisenberg QCPs, where consistent conformal field theory (CFT) content of the GN-QCP in its coefficient is found. Then we study a 2D monopole-free deconfined quantum critical point (DQCP) realized between a quantum-spin Hall insulator and a superconductor. Our data point to negative values of the logarithmic coefficients such that the DQCP does not correspond to a unitary CFT. Density matrix renormalization group calculations of the disorder operator on a 1D DQCP model also detect emergent continuous symmetries.

The origin of the pseudogap behavior, found in many high-Tc superconductors, remains one of the greatest puzzles in condensed matter physics. One possible mechanism is fermionic incoherence, which near a quantum critical point allows pair formation but suppresses superconductivity. Employing quantum Monte Carlo simulations of a model of itinerant fermions coupled to ferromagnetic spin fluctuations, represented by a quantum rotor, we report numerical evidence of pseudogap behavior, emerging from pairing fluctuations in a quantum-critical non-Fermi liquid. Specifically, we observe enhanced pairing fluctuations and a partial gap opening in the fermionic spectrum. However, the system remains non-superconducting until reaching a much lower temperature. In the pseudogap regime the system displays a "gap-filling" rather than "gap-closing" behavior, similar to the one observed in cuprate superconductors. Our results present direct evidence of the pseudogap state, driven by superconducting fluctuations.

BACKGROUND: To elucidate relationship between amino acid sequence of non-structural protein 5A (NS5A) and outcome of HCV (1 b) patients after interferon (IFNa) therapy. METHODS: Sera of 24 patients were collected before, during and after IFNa therapy. Pretreatment RNA levels and the sequences of HCV NS5A interferon sensitivity determining region (ISDR) were determined. NS5A full-length sequences of 5 HCV isolates from 3 patients with different response types were also analyzed. Phylogenetic tree analysis and protein secondary structure prediction were undertaken. RESULTS: Pretreatment RNA levels of sustained response group were significantly lower than that of non-response group and relapse group (4.50X104 copies/ml versus 1.82X107 copies/ml, P < 0.01).ISDR sequences of NS5A from pretreatment sera were compared with HCV-J strain (prototype). Thirteen of 24 isolates were wild type,11 of 24 were intermediate type and none of them was mutant type. 3 of 6 sustained responders were infected with wild-type isolates, the rest with intermediate type isolates. Phylogenetic tree based on NS5A full-length sequences classified 5 isolates with 3 different response types into 3 groups. Non-response isolates belonged to the same group as HCV-J. Secondary structure prediction of 5 isolates revealed significant differences existing in 2 255- 2 289. This region was partly overlapped with PKR-binding domain. CONCLUSIONS: Low HCV RNA levels in serum are associated with favorable outcome of IFNa therapy. ISDR sequence alone could not predict outcome of IFN treatment. Combination of determination of HCV RNA levels in serum with sequence analysis of PKR-binding domain may be helpful in predicting the efficacy of IFN therapy.
