Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a global public-health problem. Astrocytes, and their mitochondria, are important factors in the pathogenesis of TBI-induced secondary injury. Mitochondria extracted from healthy tissues and then transplanted have shown promise in models of a variety of diseases. However, the effect on recipient astrocytes is unclear. Here, we isolated primary astrocytes from newborn C57BL/6 mice, one portion of which was used to isolate mitochondria, and another was subjected to stretch injury (SI) followed by transplantation of the isolated mitochondria. After incubation for 12 h, cell viability, mitochondrial dysfunction, calcium overload, redox stress, inflammatory response, and apoptosis were improved. Live-cell imaging showed that the transplanted mitochondria were incorporated into injured astrocytes and fused with their mitochondrial networks, which was in accordance with the changes in the expression levels of markers of mitochondrial dynamics. The astrocytic IKK/NF-κB pathway was decelerated whereas the AMPK/PGC-1α pathway was accelerated by transplantation. Together, these results indicate that exogenous mitochondria from untreated astrocytes can be incorporated into injured astrocytes and fuse with their mitochondrial networks, improving cell viability by ameliorating mitochondrial dysfunction, redox stress, calcium overload, and inflammation.

BACKGROUND: Gastric cancer has a high incidence and fatality rate, and surgery is the preferred course of treatment. Nonetheless, patient survival rates are still low, and the incidence of major postoperative complications cannot be disregarded. The systemic inflammatory response, nutritional level, and coagulation status are key factors affecting the postoperative recovery and prognosis of gastric cancer patients. The systemic inflammatory response index (SIRI) and the albumin fibrinogen ratio (AFR) are two valuable comprehensive indicators of the severity and prognosis of systemic inflammation in various medical conditions. AIM: To assess the clinical importance and prognostic significance of the SIRI scores and the AFR on early postoperative outcomes in patients undergoing radical gastric cancer surgery. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective analysis of the clinicopathological characteristics and relevant laboratory indices of 568 gastric cancer patients from January 2018 to December 2019. We calculated and compared two indicators of inflammation and then examined the diagnostic ability of combined SIRI and AFR values for serious early postoperative complications. We scored the patients and categorized them into three groups based on their SIRI and AFR levels. COX analysis was used to compare the three groups of patients the prognostic value of various preoperative SIRI-AFR scores for 5-year overall survival (OS) and disease-free survival (DFS). RESULTS: SIRI-AFR scores were an independent risk factor for prognosis [OS: P = 0.004; hazards ratio (HR) = 3.134; DFS: P < 0.001; HR = 3.543] and had the highest diagnostic power (area under the curve: 0.779; 95% confidence interval: 0.737-0.820) for early serious complications in patients with gastric cancer. The tumor-node-metastasis stage (P = 0.001), perioperative transfusion (P = 0.044), positive carcinoembryonic antigen (P = 0.014) findings, and major postoperative complications (P = 0.011) were factors associated with prognosis. CONCLUSION: Preoperative SIRI and AFR values were significantly associated with early postoperative survival and the occurrence of severe complications in gastric cancer patients.

Contaminants may induce immune response polarization, leading to immune diseases, such as allergic diseases. Evidence concerning the effects of chlorinated paraffins (CPs), an emerging persistent organic pollutant, on immune system is scarce, particularly for epidemiological evidence. This study explores the association between CPs exposure and allergic diseases (allergic rhinitis, atopic eczema, and allergic conjunctivitis) in children and adolescents in the Pearl River Delta (PRD) in China. Herein, 131,304 children and adolescents from primary and secondary schools in the PRD were included and completed the questionnaire survey. The particulate matter (PM) samples were collected in the PRD and the PM2.5-bound CP concentrations were analyzed. In the multivarious adjustment mixed effect model (MEM), an IQR increase in ∑CPs was significantly associated with allergic diseases (rhinitis, eczema, and conjunctivitis) with the estimated odds ratios (ORs) for 1.11 (95% CI: 1.10, 1.13), 1.17 (95% CI: 1.15, 1.19), and 1.82 (95% CI: 1.76, 1.88), respectively. Interaction analysis indicated that overweight and obese individuals might have greater risk. Similar effect estimates were observed in several sensitivity analyses. This study provided epidemiological evidence on the immunotoxicity of CPs. More studies to confirm our findings and investigate mechanisms are needed.

Photothermal heating and photocatalytic treatment are two solar-driven water processing approaches by harnessing NIR and UV-vis light, respectively, which can fully utilize solar energy if integrated. However, it remains a challenge to achieve high performance in both approaches when integrated in a material due to uncontrollable heat diffusion. Here, we report a demonstration of heat confinement on photothermal sites and fluid cooling on photocatalysis sites at the nanoscale, within a well-designed heat and fluid confinement nanofiber reactor. Photothermal and photocatalytic nanostructures were alternatively aligned in electrospun nanofibers for on-demand nanofluidic thermal management as well as easy folding into 3D structures with enhanced light utilization and mass transfer. Such a design showed simultaneously high photothermal evaporation rate (2.59 kg m-2 h-1, exceeding the limit rate) and efficient photocatalytic upcycling of microplastics pollutant into valued products. Enabled by controlled photothermal heating, the valued main product (i.e., methyl acetate) can be evaporated out with 100% selectivity by in situ separation.

Postpartum depression (PPD) is a significant contributor to maternal morbidity and mortality. The Sigma-1 (σ-1) receptor has received increasing attention in recent years because of its ability to link different signaling systems and exert its function in the brain through chaperone actions, especially in neuropsychiatric disorders. YL-0919, a novel σ-1 receptor agonist developed by our institute, has shown antidepressive and anxiolytic effects in a variety of animal models, but effects on PPD have not been revealed. In the present study, excitatory/inhibitory signaling in the hippocampus was reflected by GABA and glutamate and their associated excitatory-inhibitory receptor proteins, the HPA axis hormones in the hippocampus were assessed by ELISA. Finally, immunofluorescence for markers of newborn neuron were undertaken in the dentate gyri, along with dendritic spine staining and dendritic arborization tracing. YL-0919 rapidly improves anxiety and depressive-like behavior in PPD-like mice within one week, along with normalizing the excitation/inhibition signaling as well as the HPA axis activity. YL-0919 rescued the decrease in hippocampal dendritic complexity and spine density induced by estrogen withdrawal. The study results suggest that YL-0919 elicits a therapeutic effect on PPD-like mice; therefore, the σ-1 receptor may be a novel promising target for PPD treatment in the future.

BACKGROUND: The systemic inflammatory response index (SIRI) has been demonstrated to make a significant difference in assessing the prognosis of patients with different solid neoplasms. However, research is needed to ascertain the accuracy and reliability of applying the SIRI to patients who undergo robotic radical gastric cancer surgery. AIM: To validate the applicability of the SIRI in assessing the survival of gastric cancer patients and evaluate the clinical contribution of preoperative SIRI levels to predicting long-term tumor outcomes in patients, who received robotic radical gastric cancer surgery. METHODS: Initially, an exhaustive retrieval was performed in the PubMed, the Cochrane Library, EMBASE, Web of Science, and Scopus databases to identify relevant studies. Subsequently, a meta-analysis was executed on 6 cohort studies identifying the value of the SIRI in assessing the survival of gastric cancer patients. Additionally, the clinical data of 161 patients undergoing robotic radical gastric cancer surgery were retrospectively analyzed to evaluate their clinicopathological characteristics and relevant laboratory indicators. The association between preoperative SIRI levels and 5-year overall survival (OS) and disease-free survival (DFS) was assessed. RESULTS: The findings demonstrated an extensive connection between SIRI values and the outcome of patients with gastric cancer. Preoperative SIRI levels were identified as an independent hazard feature for both OS and DFS among those who received robotic surgery for gastric cancer. SIRI levels in gastric cancer patients were observed to be associated with the presence of comorbidities, T-stage, carcinoembryonic antigen levels, the development of early serious postoperative complications, and the rate of lymph node metastasis. CONCLUSION: SIRI values are correlated with adverse in the gastric cancer population and have the potential to be utilized in predicting long-term oncological survival in patients who undergo robotic radical gastric cancer surgery.

Carbon dioxide electroreduction (CO2ER) presents a promising strategy for environmentally friendly CO2 utilization due to its low energy consumption. Single-atom nanozymes (SANs), amalgamating the benefits of single-atom catalysts and nanozymes, have become a hot topic in catalysis. Inspired by the intricate structure of cytochrome P450, we designed 81 sandwich-like SANs using Group-VIII transition metals (TMN4-S-TM'N4) and evaluated their performance in CO2ER using density functional theory (DFT). Our investigation revealed that most SANs display superior catalytic activity and improved specific product selectivity in comparison to the Cu (211) surface. Notably, IrN4-S-TMN4 (TM = Co, Rh, Pd) exhibited selective CO2 reduction to CO with remarkable limiting potentials (UL) of -0.11, -0.07, and -0.09 V, respectively, demonstrating potential as artificial CO dehydrogenases. Furthermore, RuN4-S-RuN4 exhibited formate dehydrogenase-like activity, resulting in selective production of HCOOH at a UL of -0.10 V. Machine learning analysis elucidated that the exceptional activity and selectivity of these SANs stemmed from precise modulation of electron density on sulfur atoms, achieved by varying transition metals in the subsurface. Our research not only identifies exceptional SANs for CO2ER but also provides insights into innovative methods for regulating non-bonding interactions and achieving sustainable CO2 conversion.

Background: The synergistic effect of locoregional therapy in combination with systemic therapy as a conversion therapy for unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma (uHCC) is unclear. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the efficacy and safety of transcatheter arterial chemoembolisation (TACE) combined with lenvatinib and camrelizumab (TACE + LEN + CAM) as conversion therapy for uHCC. Methods: This single-arm, multicentre, prospective study was conducted at nine hospitals in China. Patients (aged 18-75 years) diagnosed with uHCC, an Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group performance score (ECOG-PS) of 0-1 and Child-Pugh class A received camrelizumab (200 mg, every 3 weeks) and lenvatinib (bodyweight ≥60 kg: 12 mg/day; <60 kg: 8 mg/day) after TACE treatment. Surgery was performed after tumour was assessed as meeting the criteria for resection. Patients who did not meet the criteria for surgery continued to receive triple therapy until disease progression or intolerable toxicity. Primary endpoints were objective response rate (ORR) according to the modified Response Evaluation Criteria in Solid Tumours (mRECIST) and safety. Secondary endpoints included the surgical conversion rate, radical (R0) resection rate, and disease control rate (DCR). This study was registered with Chinese Clinical Trial Registry (ChiCTR2100050410). Findings: Between Oct 25, 2021, and July 20, 2022, 55 patients were enrolled. As of the data cutoff on June 1, 2023, the median follow-up was 13.3 months (IQR 10.6-15.9 months). The best tumour response to triple therapy was complete response (CR) in 9 (16.4%) patients, partial response (PR) in 33 (60.0%) patients, stable disease (SD) in 5 (9.1%) patients, or progressive disease (PD) in 7 (12.7%) patients. The ORR was 76.4% (42/55, 95% CI, 65.2-87.6%), and the DCR was 85.5% (47/55, 95% CI, 76.2-94.8%) per mRECIST. Twenty-four (43.6%) of the 55 patients suffered from grade 3-4 treatment-related adverse events (TRAEs). No grade 5 TRAEs occurred. A total of 30 (30/55, 54.5%) patients were converted to resectable HCC and 29 (29/55, 52.7%) patients underwent resection. The R0 resection rate was 96.6% (28/29). The major pathologic response (MPR) and pathologic complete response (pCR) rates in the surgery population were 65.5% (19/29) and 20.7% (6/29), respectively. Only one patient developed a Clavien-Dindo IIIa complication (abdominal infection). No Clavien-Dindo IIIb-V complications occurred. The median OS and median PFS were not reached. Interpretation: The triple therapy (TACE + LEN + CAM) is promising active for uHCC with a manageable safety. Moreover, triple therapy has good conversion efficiency and the surgery after conversion therapy is feasible and safe. To elucidate whether patients with uHCC accepting surgical treatment after the triple therapy can achieve better survival benefits than those who receive triple therapy only, well-designed randomised controlled trials are needed. Background: The sagittal imbalance (SI) of spine triggers compensatory mechanisms (CMs) of lower extremity (LE) to restore trunk balance. These CMs can cause long-period stress on the femur and may possibly alter the femoral morphology. This cross-sectional observational study aimed to answer the following questions: (a) Do SI subjects exhibit greater femoral bowing compared to subjects with sagittal balance? (b) Are there associations between femoral bowing and CMs of LE in SI subjects? Methods: Subjects who underwent biplanar full body radiographs with the EOS imaging system between January 2016 and September 2021 were recruited. Sagittal parameters included T1-pelvic angle (TPA), pelvic incidence (PI), pelvic tilt (PT), sacral slope, lumbar lordosis (LL), PI-LL, and PT/PI ratio. LE parameters were femoral obliquity angle (FOA), knee flexion angle (KA), and ankle dorsiflexion angle. Femoral bowing was quantified as 3D radius of femoral curvature (RFC). Associations between 3D RFC and the radiographic parameters were analyzed. Results: A total of 105 subjects were included, classified into balance group (TPA < 14°, n = 40), SI group (TPA ≥ 14° and KA <5°, n = 30), and SI with knee flexion group (TPA ≥ 14° and KA ≥ 5°, n = 35). 3D RFC was significantly lower in SI with knee flexion group compared to the other two groups (both p < 0.001). Stepwise linear regression showed that age, SI and knee flexion, femoral length (FL), FOA, and KA were independent predictors for 3D RFC. Conclusion: Greater femoral bowing is observed in subjects with SI and knee flexion compared to the balanced population. CM parameters, including KA and FOA, are associated with 3D RFC. Further longitudinal study is needed to investigate the cause-and-effect relationship between SI, CMs of LE, and femoral bowing.

The development of electrocatalysts that exhibit stability, high activity, and selectivity for CO2 reduction reactions (CO2RR) remains a significant challenge. Single-atom catalysts (SACs) hold promise in addressing this challenge due to their high atomic utilization efficiency. In this study, we explore the potential of monolayer γ-GeSe doped with transition metals, referred to as TM@γ-GeSe, for facilitating electrocatalytic CO2RR. Among the 26 TM@γ-GeSe SACs systematically designed, we have identified four stable transition metal catalysts (TM = Rh, Pd, Pt, and Au). Mechanistic investigations into the CO2RR pathways reveal exceptional electrocatalytic activity for Rh@γ-GeSe and Pd@γ-GeSe, with limiting potentials of -0.26 and -0.35 V, respectively. Particularly, Pd@γ-GeSe exhibits outstanding product selectivity toward formic acid. The introduction of strain engineering induces modifications in the catalytic activity and selectivity of Rh@γ-GeSe. Notably, a 1% tensile strain promotes formic acid as the preferred product, thereby improving the specific product selectivity of Rh@γ-GeSe. Conversely, compressive strain reduces CO2RR activity while enhancing the hydrogen evolution reaction, leading to a decrease in CO2RR selectivity. Furthermore, we use the work function as a descriptor to elucidate the underlying mechanism of strain tunability. We hope that our theoretical study will offer valuable insights for the design of catalysts based on γ-GeSe for electrocatalytic CO2RR.

Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a worldwide public health problem characterized by the massive loss of tubular cells. However, the precise mechanism for initiating tubular cell death has not been fully elucidated. Here, we reported that phosphoglycerate mutase 5 (PGAM5) was upregulated in renal tubular epithelial cells during ischaemia/reperfusion or cisplatin-induced AKI in mice. PGAM5 knockout significantly alleviated the activation of the mitochondria-dependent apoptosis pathway and tubular apoptosis. Apoptosis inhibitors alleviated the activation of the mitochondria-dependent apoptosis pathway. Mechanistically, as a protein phosphatase, PGAM5 could dephosphorylate Bax and facilitate Bax translocation to the mitochondrial membrane. The translocation of Bax to mitochondria increased membrane permeability, decreased mitochondrial membrane potential and facilitated the release of mitochondrial cytochrome c (Cyt c) into the cytoplasm. Knockdown of Bax attenuated PGAM5 overexpression-induced Cyt c release and tubular cell apoptosis. Our results demonstrated that the increase in PGAM5-mediated Bax dephosphorylation and mitochondrial translocation was implicated in the development of AKI by initiating mitochondrial Cyt c release and activating the mitochondria-dependent apoptosis pathway. Targeting this axis might be beneficial for alleviating AKI.

BackgroundChronic insomnia is characterized by a prolonged and recurrent course. The efficacy of repeated transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) as a physical therapy method to improve sleep quality remains inadequately supported by evidence, particularly regarding its relationship with personality traits. ObjectiveTo explore the efficacy and influencing factors of rTMS in the treatment of chronic insomnia, and to provide insights into its therapeutic potential. MethodA total of 46 patients who met the diagnostic criteria for chronic insomnia according to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, fifth edition (DSM-5), and were treated at the Third Hospital of Mianyang from September 2022 to September 2023 were selected. Prior to treatment, participants underwent assessments using the Eysenck Personality Questionnaire (EPQ), Hamilton Depression Scale-17 item (HAMD-17) and Hamilton Anxiety Scale (HAMA). The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) was used to assess sleep quality before treatment, at the end of the second week of treatment and one week post-treatment. ResultsAt the end of the second week of treatment, patients exhibited significantly improved total PSQI score and subscale scores related to subjective sleep quality, sleep latency, sleep duration, sleep efficiency, sleep disturbance and daytime dysfunction (t=4.755~13.361, P<0.01), with 24 cases (54.35%) showing effective treatment outcomes. Multiple linear regression analysis showed that introverted and extroverted personality traits contributed significantly to the regression equation (B=0.317, P<0.01), explaining 29.90% of the total variation (R2=0.299). ConclusionrTMS treatment may effectively improve the sleep quality of patients with chronic insomnia, with its therapeutic effect appearing to associated with introverted and extroverted personality traits. Endorepellin plays a key role in the regulation of angiogenesis, but its effects on angiogenesis after traumatic brain injury are unclear. This study explored the effects of endorepellin on angiogenesis and neurobehavioral outcomes after traumatic brain injury in mice. Mice were randomly divided into four groups: sham, controlled cortical impact only, adeno-associated virus (AAV)-green fluorescent protein, and AAV-shEndorepellin-green fluorescent protein groups. In the controlled cortical impact model, the transduction of AAV-shEndorepellin-green fluorescent protein downregulated endorepellin while increasing the number of CD31+/Ki-67+ proliferating endothelial cells and the functional microvessel density in mouse brain. These changes resulted in improved neurological function compared with controlled cortical impact mice. Western blotting revealed increased expression of vascular endothelial growth factor and angiopoietin-1 in mice treated with AAV-shEndorepellin-green fluorescent protein. Synchrotron radiation angiography showed that endorepellin downregulation promoted angiogenesis and increased cortical neovascularization, which may further improve neurobehavioral outcomes. Furthermore, an in vitro study showed that downregulation of endorepellin increased tube formation by human umbilical vein endothelial cells compared with a control. Mechanistic analysis found that endorepellin downregulation may mediate angiogenesis by activating vascular endothelial growth factor- and angiopoietin-1-related signaling pathways.

Background: This study aimed to determine whether salvage hepatectomy offers prognostic advantages for unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma (uHCC) patients with clinical complete response (cCR) after conversion therapy. Methods: A total of 74 consecutive uHCC patients with cCR after conversion therapy at seven major cancer centers in China between October 2018 and December 2021 were included. One-to-one propensity score matching (PSM) was performed to minimize the influence of potential confounders. Disease-free survival (DFS) and overall survival (OS) rates were compared between the surgical group and the non-surgical group. Results: Before PSM, 45 patients received salvage hepatectomy, and 29 patients received nonsurgical treatment. The 1-, 2-, and 3-year DFS rates were 77.8%, 61.5%, and 61.5% in the surgical group and 81.2%, 60.9%, and 60.9% in the non-surgical group, respectively. The 1-, 2-, and 3-year OS rates were 92.9%, 92.9%, and 69.7% in the surgical group and 100%, 70%, and 70% in the non-surgical group, respectively. There were no statistical differences in DFS and OS between groups [hazard ratio (HR)=0.715, 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.250-2.043, p=0.531; HR=0.980, 95% CI: 0.177-5.418, p=0.982, respectively]. After PSM, 26 pairs of patents were selected; there remained no significant differences in DFS and OS between these two groups (HR=1.547, 95% CI: 0.512-4.669, p=0.439; HR=1.024, 95% CI: 0.168-6.242, p=0.979, respectively). Conclusion: Through the study, it tend to show that salvage hepatectomy may be not essential for uHCC patients with cCR, especially for patients with a high risk of surgical complications. Prospective trials with long term follow-up are warranted to evaluate this treatment option.

Previous studies have indicated that iron disorder, inflammation, and autophagy play an important role in traumatic brain injury (TBI). The triggering receptor expressed on myeloid cells 2 (TREM2), an immunoglobulin superfamily transmembrane receptor, is involved in inflammation. However, the role of TREM2 in modulating the microglia response in TBI has been rarely investigated. The present study aimed to investigate if the iron chelator deferoxamine (DFO) could ameliorate TBI through autophagy mediated by the TREM2. TBI was developed by the controlled cortical impact (CCI) mouse model and stretching of individual primary cortical microglia taken from the tissue of the rat brain. DFO was intraperitoneally used for intervention. Western blotting assay, qRT-PCR, TUNEL staining, immunofluorescence staining, confocal microscopy analysis, transmission electron microscopy, H&E staining, brain water content measurement, and the neurobehavioral assessments were performed. TREM2 expression was up-regulated in cortex of TBI mice model and in microglia stretching model, which was attenuated by DFO. After the mice were subjected to CCI, DFO treatment significantly up-regulated the protein levels of autophagy compared with the TBI group at 3 days and caused an increase of autophagic vacuoles. Treatment with DFO reduced TBI-induced cell apoptosis, cerebral edema, neuroinflammation, and motor function impairment in mice, at least partly via the mTOR signaling pathway that facilitates the TREM2 activity. The results indicated that the maintenance of iron homeostasis by DFO plays neuroprotection by modulating the inflammatory response to TBI through TREM2-mediated autophagy. This study suggested that TREM2-mediated autophagy might be a potential target for therapeutic intervention in TBI.

Background: N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor (NMDAR) are amino acid receptors that are well studied in brain physiology; however, their role in kidney is poorly understood. Nonetheless, NMDAR inhibitors can increase serum K+ and reduce GFR, which suggests they have an important physiological role in the kidney. We hypothesized that NMDARs in the distal nephron induce afferent-arteriole vasodilation through the vasodilator mechanism connecting-tubule-glomerular feedback (CNTGF) that involves ENaC activation. Methods and results: Using a tubule-specific transcriptome database combined with molecular biology and microscopy techniques, we showed kidney expression of NMDAR subunits along the nephron and specifically in ENaC-positive cells. This receptor is expressed in both male and female mice, with higher abundance in females (p=0.02). Microperfusing NMDAR agonists into the connecting tubule induced afferent-arteriole vasodilation (EC50 10.7 vs. 24.5 mM; p<0.001) that was blunted or eliminated with the use of NMDAR blocker MK-801 or with the ENaC inhibitor Benzamil, indicating a dependence on CNTGF of the NMDAR-induced vasodilation. In vivo, we confirmed this CNTGF-associated vasodilation using kidney micropuncture (Stop-flow pressure 37.9±2.6 vs. 28.6±1.9 mmHg, NMDAR agonist vs vehicle; p<0.01). We explored NMDAR and ENaC channel interaction by using mpkCCD cells and split-open connecting tubules. We observed increased amiloride-sensitive current following NMDAR activation that was prevented by MK-801 (1.14 vs. 0.4 µAmp; p=0.03). In split-open tubules, NMDAR activation increased ENaC activity (Npo Vehicle vs. NMDA; p=0.04). Conclusion: NMDARs are expressed along the nephron, including ENaC-positive cells, with higher expression in females. Epithelial NMDAR mediates renal vasodilation through the connecting-tubule-glomerular feedback, by increasing ENaC activity.

Quantum mechanical tunneling (QMT) can play an important role in light element-related chemical reactions; however, its influence on racemization is not fully understood. Herein, we demonstrate that the role of QMT is decisive for rapid racemization of the well-known thalidomide molecule in aqueous environments, increasing the reaction rate constants of the most likely racemization pathways by 87-149 times at approximately body temperature and achieving good agreement between theoretical calculations and experimental observations. In addition, the kinetic isotope effect values fit well with those of previous experiments. These results are attributed to enhanced tunneling probability due to the alteration of potential barriers for proton transfer reactions via water bridges. This work highlights the significance of the QMT effect in racemization and its potential impact on drug safety, providing a fundamental perspective for understanding chirality-related issues in biological systems.

Objective: To explore the correlation between insomnia and language ability in patients with schizophrenia. Methods: 120 patients with schizophrenia admitted to our hospital from June 2020 to January 2022 were enrolled as the research objects. According to the total score of the Pittsburgh Sleep Index (PSQI), they were divided into the insomnia group (PSQI total score > 10 points) and the non-insomnia group (PSQI total score ≤ 10 points). To compare the difference in verbal fluency scale between insomnia and non-insomnia groups and to understand the correlation between insomnia symptoms and language ability in patients with schizophrenia. Results: There were no significant differences in age, gender, and years of education between the insomnia group and the non-insomnia group (P > 0.05). The total score of the verbal fluency test (VFT) in the insomnia group was significantly different from that in the non-insomnia group (P < 0.01). The total score of the insomnia group was lower than that of the non-insomnia group, and the factors (fluency animal, fluency fruit and vegetable, speech fluency, motor fluency) were lower than that of the non-insomnia group. Logistic regression analysis showed that the total verbal fluency score in schizophrenia patients was negatively correlated with insomnia symptoms (P < 0.05). Schizophrenia patients with insomnia symptoms had worse language ability than those without. Conclusion: There is a significant difference in language ability between schizophrenia patients with insomnia and those without insomnia symptoms. This suggests that schizophrenia patients with insomnia have a greater probability of language ability disorder.
