RESUMO

Research conducted amongst perioperative nurses during 1996 investigated both the causes of occupational stress and nurses' perceptions of the effects of modern medical technologies on several aspects of their work life during the preceding three years. It found that there was a strong perception amongst the 433 nurses in the study that medical technologies had contributed to their increased workloads and higher levels of stress. This article presents the key findings on occupational stress and discusses some of their implications for health service managers who have responsibility for the occupational health and safety of nurses working in the operating theatre environment.

RESUMO

Bacterial Artificial Chromosomes (BACs) have been used to complement a metabolic defect and to transfer a drug resistance marker into mammalian cells by electroporation. The selectable markers are stable and the recipient cells have BAC DNA integrated into the chromosomes as shown by fluorescent in situ hybridization, PCR and Southern hybridization.

RESUMO

This paper explores some health status differences between the Aboriginal and total Australian populations, and investigates trends in Aboriginal mortality and morbidity within the context of some of the socioeconomic, lifestyle and environmental influences. It identifies that Aboriginal people continue to suffer from a number of health problems at significantly higher rates than the rest of the population, and discusses some of the effects of early fertility and alcohol misuse on health status. Drawing on some findings of the 1994 National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Survey, the paper concludes with the proposition that it is impossible to consider the economic implications of sub-standard Aboriginal health without also considering the social issues, and that programs aimed at improving this situation must be demand-driven, economically responsible responses to identified problems in specific regions.

RESUMO

Twenty-three generalist health managers in Australia who have made a career path change from management in the nursing division were surveyed about factors which they perceived as either promoting or constraining their changes in career path. The most significant influencing factors were determination to succeed, personal skills and abilities, the ability to work as part of a team and track record, with ten factors being rated overall as 'quite important'. The most constraining factors related to the shortage of management positions, turbulence in the health care industry, and political factors connected with the mechanisms for making executive appointments.
