BACKGROUND: This study describes patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) and associated factors in patients who underwent surgery for malignant parotid tumors (MPT). METHODS: This is a retrospective study of all surgically treated MPT patients in a multidisciplinary head and neck cancer (HNC) survivorship clinic (2017-2023). PROMs included University of Washington Quality of Life Questionnaire (UW-QOL), Eating Assessment Tool (EAT-10), Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-8), Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD-7), Neck Disability Index (NDI), and Insomnia Severity Index. Multivariable regression analysis was used to investigate clinical predictors associated with PROMs. RESULTS: In 62 MPT patients, the prevalence of clinically relevant dysphagia symptoms (EAT-10), elevated symptoms of depression (PHQ-8), moderate/severe symptoms of anxiety (GAD-7), moderate/severe neck pain with activities of daily living (NDI), and moderate/severe symptoms of insomnia at last follow-up was 32.3%, 15.5%, 7.1%, 17.7%, and 7.2%, respectively. Nonparametric one-sided test revealed that patients treated with adjuvant CRT had significantly worse physical QOL, social-emotional QOL, and swallowing scores than patients treated with surgery alone (p = 0.01, p = 0.02, p = 0.03, respectively); that patients treated with surgery and adjuvant RT had significantly worse physical QOL and social-emotional QOL than patients treated with surgery alone (p < 0.01, p = 0.01, respectively) and that patients treated with surgery and adjuvant CRT had significantly worse swallowing and neck pain than patients treated with surgery and adjuvant RT (p = 0.03, p = 0.05, respectively). CONCLUSIONS: In patients with surgically treated MPT, adjuvant CRT and RT were associated with worse PROMs. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: 4 Laryngoscope, 2024.

PURPOSE: To investigate the feasibility of diffusion tensor brain imaging at 0.55T with comparisons against 3T. METHODS: Diffusion tensor imaging data with 2 mm isotropic resolution was acquired on a cohort of five healthy subjects using both 0.55T and 3T scanners. The signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the 0.55T data was improved using a previous SNR-enhancing joint reconstruction method that jointly reconstructs the entire set of diffusion weighted images from k-space using shared-edge constraints. Quantitative diffusion tensor parameters were estimated and compared across field strengths. We also performed a test-retest assessment of repeatability at each field strength. RESULTS: After applying SNR-enhancing joint reconstruction, the diffusion tensor parameters obtained from 0.55T data were strongly correlated ( R 2 ≥ 0 . 70 $$ {R}^2\ge 0.70 $$ ) with those obtained from 3T data. Test-retest analysis showed that SNR-enhancing reconstruction improved the repeatability of the 0.55T diffusion tensor parameters. CONCLUSION: High-resolution in vivo diffusion MRI of the human brain is feasible at 0.55T when appropriate noise-mitigation strategies are applied.

In this initial study, the impact of thermosonication as an alternative to the traditional fusion in Brazilian cheese spread (Requeijão Cremoso) manufacture was investigated. The effect of ultrasound (US) power was evaluated considering various aspects such as gross composition, microstructure, texture, rheology, color, fatty acid composition, and volatile compounds. A 13 mm US probe operating at 20 kHz was used. The experiment involved different US power levels (200, 400, and 600 W) at 85 °C for 1 min, and results were compared to the conventional process in the same conditions (85 °C for 1 min, control treatment). The texture became softer as ultrasound power increased from 200 to 600 W, which was attributed to structural changes within the protein and lipid matrix. The color of the cheese spread also underwent noticeable changes for all US treatments, and treatment at 600 W resulted in increased lightness but reduced color intensity. Moreover, the fatty acid composition of the cheese spread showed variations with different US power, with samples treated at 600 W showing lower concentrations of saturated and unsaturated fatty acids, as well as lower atherogenicity and thrombogenicity indexes, indicating a potentially healthier product. Volatile compounds were also influenced by US, with less compounds being identified at higher powers, especially at 600 W. This could indicate possible degradation, which should be evaluated in further studies regarding US treatment effects on consumer perception. Hence, this initial work demonstrated that thermosonication might be interesting in the manufacture of Brazilian cheese spread, since it can be used to manipulate the texture, color and aroma of the product in order to improve its quality parameters.

Diabetes represents a major public health concern with a considerable impact on human life and healthcare expenditures. It is now well established that diabetes is characterized by a severe skeletal muscle pathology that limits functional capacity and quality of life. Increasing evidence indicates that diabetes is also one of the most prevalent disorders characterized by impaired skeletal muscle regeneration, yet underlying mechanisms and therapeutic treatments remain poorly established. In this review, we describe the cellular and molecular alterations currently known to occur during skeletal muscle regeneration in people with diabetes and animal models of diabetes, including its associated comorbidities, e.g., obesity, hyperinsulinemia, and insulin resistance. We describe the role of myogenic and non-myogenic cell types on muscle regeneration in conditions with or without diabetes. Therapies for skeletal muscle regeneration and gaps in our knowledge are also discussed, while proposing future directions for the field.

Mitochondrial dysfunction and low nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+) levels are hallmarks of skeletal muscle ageing and sarcopenia1-3, but it is unclear whether these defects result from local changes or can be mediated by systemic or dietary cues. Here we report a functional link between circulating levels of the natural alkaloid trigonelline, which is structurally related to nicotinic acid4, NAD+ levels and muscle health in multiple species. In humans, serum trigonelline levels are reduced with sarcopenia and correlate positively with muscle strength and mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation in skeletal muscle. Using naturally occurring and isotopically labelled trigonelline, we demonstrate that trigonelline incorporates into the NAD+ pool and increases NAD+ levels in Caenorhabditis elegans, mice and primary myotubes from healthy individuals and individuals with sarcopenia. Mechanistically, trigonelline does not activate GPR109A but is metabolized via the nicotinate phosphoribosyltransferase/Preiss-Handler pathway5,6 across models. In C. elegans, trigonelline improves mitochondrial respiration and biogenesis, reduces age-related muscle wasting and increases lifespan and mobility through an NAD+-dependent mechanism requiring sirtuin. Dietary trigonelline supplementation in male mice enhances muscle strength and prevents fatigue during ageing. Collectively, we identify nutritional supplementation of trigonelline as an NAD+-boosting strategy with therapeutic potential for age-associated muscle decline.

BACKGROUND: Circadian disruption is widespread and increases the risk of obesity. Timing of therapeutic interventions may promote coherent and efficient gating of metabolic processes and restore energy homeostasis. AIM: To characterize the diurnal postexercise metabolic state in mice and to identify the influence of diet-induced obesity on identified outcomes. METHODS: C57BL6/NTac male mice (6 wks of age) were fed a standard chow or high-fat diet for 5 weeks. At week 5, mice were subjected to a 60-min (16 m/min, 5 % incline) running bout (or sham) during the early rest (day) or early active (night) phase. Tissue and serum samples were collected immediately post-exercise (n = 6/group). In vivo glucose oxidation was measured after oral administration of 13C-glucose via 13CO2 exhalation analysis in metabolic cages. Basal and isoproterenol-stimulated adipose tissue lipolysis was assessed ex vivo for 1 h following exercise. RESULTS: Lean mice displayed exercise-timing-specific plasticity in metabolic outcomes, including phase-specificity in systemic glucose metabolism and adipose-tissue-autonomous lipolytic activity depending on time of day. Conversely, obesity impaired temporal postexercise differences in whole-body glucose oxidation, as well as the phase- and exercise-mediated induction of lipolysis in isolated adipose tissue. This obesity-induced alteration in diurnal metabolism, as well as the indistinct response to exercise, was observed concomitant with disruption of core clock gene expression in peripheral tissues. CONCLUSIONS: Overall, high-fat fed obese mice exhibit metabolic inflexibility, which is also evident in the diurnal exercise response. Our study provides physiological insight into exercise timing-dependent aspects in the dynamic regulation of metabolism and the influence of obesity on this biology.

Resveratrol, a natural polyphenol compound contained in numerous plants, has been proposed as a treatment for obesity-related disease processes such as insulin resistance. However, in humans there are conflicting results concerning the efficacy of resveratrol in improving insulin action; the purpose of the present study was to determine whether obesity status (lean, severely obese) affects the response to resveratrol in human skeletal muscle. Primary skeletal muscle cells were derived from biopsies obtained from age-matched lean and insulin-resistant women with severe obesity and incubated with resveratrol (1 µM) for 24 h. Insulin-stimulated glucose oxidation and incorporation into glycogen, insulin signal transduction, and energy-sensitive protein targets [AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK), Sirt1, and PGC1α] were analyzed. Insulin-stimulated glycogen synthesis, glucose oxidation, and AMPK phosphorylation increased with resveratrol incubation compared with the nonresveratrol conditions (main treatment effect for resveratrol). Resveratrol further increased IRS1, Akt, and TBC1D4 insulin-stimulated phosphorylation and SIRT1 content in myotubes from lean women, but not in women with severe obesity. Resveratrol improves insulin action in primary human skeletal myotubes derived from lean women and women with severe obesity. In women with obesity, these improvements may be associated with enhanced AMPK phosphorylation with resveratrol treatment.NEW & NOTEWORTHY A physiologically relevant dose of resveratrol increases insulin-stimulated glucose oxidation and glycogen synthesis in myotubes from individuals with severe obesity. Furthermore, resveratrol improved insulin signal transduction in myotubes from lean individuals but not from individuals with obesity. Activation of AMPK plays a role in resveratrol-induced improvements in glucose metabolism in individuals with severe obesity.

BACKGROUND: We used electromyography to characterize hypoglossal nerve function among radiation-treated head and neck cancer survivors with later onset unilateral tongue immobility. METHODS: Patients with unilateral tongue immobility without evidence of recurrent cancer were seen at a tertiary academic institution between February and September 2021. All patients were at least 2 years post-treatment with radiation therapy for head and neck squamous cell carcinoma. Participants were under annual surveillance and displayed no evidence of operative injury to the hypoglossal nerve. RESULTS: The median symptom-free interval for the 10 patients included in this study was 13.2 years (range 2-25 years). Myokymia alone was present in 3 of 10 patients, fibrillation potentials alone were present in 3 of 10 patients, and 1 subject displayed both fibrillation and myokymia. Three out of 10 patients had normal hypoglossal nerve function. DISCUSSION: These findings highlight how disparate mechanisms may underlie similar clinical presentations of radiation-induced neuromuscular dysfunction.

Gut dysbiosis is common in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) and is associated with uremic toxin production, inflammation, oxidative stress, and cardiovascular disease development. Therefore, healthy dietary patterns are essential modulators of gut microbiota. In this context, studies suggest that consuming berry fruits, rich in polyphenols and nutrients, may positively affect the gut microbiota, promoting the selective growth of beneficial bacteria and improving clinical status. However, studies on the effects of berry fruits on gut microbiota in CKD are scarce, and a better understanding of the possible mechanisms of action of berry fruits on gut microbiota is needed to guide future clinical studies and clinical practice in CKD. The objective was to discuss how berry fruits (blueberry, cranberry, raspberry, and strawberry) could be a therapeutic strategy to modulate the gut microbiota and possibly reverse the dysbiosis in CKD. Overall, available evidence shows that berry fruits can promote an increase in diversity by affecting the abundance of mucus-producing bacteria and short-chain fatty acids. Moreover, these fruits can increase the expression of mRNA involved in tight junctions in the gut such as occludin, tight junction protein 1 (TJP1), and mucin. Studies on the exact amount of berries leading to these effects show heterogeneous findings. However, it is known that, with 5 mg/day, it is already possible to observe some effects in animal models. Wild berries could possibly improve the uremic condition by reducing the levels of uremic toxins via modulation of the gut microbiota. In the long term, this could be an excellent strategy for patients with CKD. Therefore, clinical studies are encouraged to evaluate better these effects on CKD as well as the safe amount of these fruits in order to promote a better quality of life or even the survival of these patients.

The ribotoxic stress response (RSR) is a signaling pathway in which the p38- and c-Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK)-activating mitogen-activated protein kinase kinase kinase (MAP3K) ZAKα senses stalling and/or collision of ribosomes. Here, we show that reactive oxygen species (ROS)-generating agents trigger ribosomal impairment and ZAKα activation. Conversely, zebrafish larvae deficient for ZAKα are protected from ROS-induced pathology. Livers of mice fed a ROS-generating diet exhibit ZAKα-activating changes in ribosomal elongation dynamics. Highlighting a role for the RSR in metabolic regulation, ZAK-knockout mice are protected from developing high-fat high-sugar (HFHS) diet-induced blood glucose intolerance and liver steatosis. Finally, ZAK ablation slows animals from developing the hallmarks of metabolic aging. Our work highlights ROS-induced ribosomal impairment as a physiological activation signal for ZAKα that underlies metabolic adaptation in obesity and aging.

The oceans play an important role in mitigating climate change by acting as large carbon sinks, especially at high latitude regions. The Southern Ocean plays a major role in the global carbon dioxide (CO2) budget. This work aims to investigate the behavior of turbulent CO2 fluxes and quantify it under different atmospheric and oceanic conditions in the Drake Passage and Bransfield Strait regions on high spatiotemporal resolutions when compared with traditional CO2 fluxes estimations. The atmospheric stability condition was used to corroborate the description of CO2 fluxes. In situ, satellite, and reanalysis data from 08 to 22 November 2018, were used in this work. The Bransfield Strait uptaked 38.59% more CO2 than the Drake Passage due to the cold and fresh waters, allied to the influence of glacial meltwater dilution. Which increased the CO2 solubility, directing the CO2 fluxes to the ocean. The Bransfield Strait had predominantly stable atmospheric conditions, which contributed to this region acting as a CO2 sink. The Drake Passage, on average, behaved as a CO2 sink, mainly due to physical characteristics. This research contributes to a better understanding of the Southern Ocean's role in the global carbon balance on scales that are very difficult to monitor.

Honey is a food product consumed all over the world. Besides its nutritional properties, honey presents antibacterial, antioxidant, and wound-healing properties. To ensure that the final product meets qualitative and microbiological standards, honey treatment is of great importance. Conventional honey treatment is based on the heating of honey samples for decrystallization and bacteria and yeast inactivation. However, conventional heating can cause negative effects on honey quality, such as the formation of toxic compounds, reduction of enzyme activity, and loss of antioxidant and antimicrobial properties. The application of ultrasonic waves has demonstrated interesting effects on honey processing. Ultrasound (US) treatment can lead to the fragmentation of glucose crystals in crystalized honey and has little effect on its properties. In addition to inactivating microorganisms, US-assisted honey processing also preserves phenolic compounds content and antimicrobial properties. However, there is still limited information about honey sonication. The aim of the present review is to comprehensively show the possibilities of US application in honey processing and its effects on honey properties.

Except for latitudes close to the equator, seasonal variation in light hours can change dramatically between summer and winter. Yet investigations into the interplay between energy metabolism and circadian rhythms typically use a 12 h light:12 h dark photoperiod corresponding to the light duration at the equator. We hypothesized that altering the seasonal photoperiod affects both the rhythmicity of peripheral tissue clocks and energy homeostasis. Mice were housed at photoperiods representing either light hours in summer, winter, or the equinox. Mice housed at a winter photoperiod exhibited an increase in the amplitude of rhythmic lipid metabolism and a modest reduction in fat mass and liver triglyceride content. Comparing melatonin-proficient and -deficient mice, the effect of seasonal light on energy metabolism was largely driven by differences in the rhythmicity of food intake and not melatonin. Together, these data indicate that seasonal light impacts energy metabolism by modulating the timing of eating.

RESUMO

Nicotinamide riboside is a precursor to the important cofactor nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide and has elicited metabolic benefits in multiple preclinical studies. In 2016, the first clinical trial of nicotinamide riboside was conducted to test the safety and efficacy of human supplementation. Many trials have since been conducted aiming to delineate benefits to metabolic health and severe diseases in humans. This review endeavors to summarize and critically assess the 25 currently published research articles on human nicotinamide riboside supplementation to identify any poorly founded claims and assist the field in elucidating the actual future potential for nicotinamide riboside. Collectively, oral nicotinamide riboside supplementation has displayed few clinically relevant effects, and there is an unfortunate tendency in the literature to exaggerate the importance and robustness of reported effects. Even so, nicotinamide riboside may play a role in the reduction of inflammatory states and has shown some potential in the treatment of diverse severe diseases.

Given the accelerating powers of artificial intelligence (AI), we must equip artificial agents and robots with empathy to prevent harmful and irreversible decisions. Current approaches to artificial empathy focus on its cognitive or performative processes, overlooking affect, and thus promote sociopathic behaviors. Artificially vulnerable, fully empathic AI is necessary to prevent sociopathic robots and protect human welfare.

Importance: Despite the critical role of caregivers in head and neck cancer (HNC), there is limited literature on caregiver burden (CGB) and its evolution over treatment. Research is needed to address evidence gaps that exist in understanding the causal pathways between caregiving and treatment outcomes. Objective: To evaluate the prevalence of and identify risk factors for CGB in HNC survivorship. Design, Setting, and Participants: This longitudinal prospective cohort study took place at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. Dyads of treatment-naive patients with HNC and their caregivers were recruited between October 2019 and December 2020. Eligible patient-caregiver dyads were 18 years or older and fluent in English. Patients undergoing definitive treatment identified a caregiver as the primary, nonprofessional, nonpaid person who provided the most assistance to them. Among 100 eligible dyadic participants, 2 caregivers declined participation, resulting in 96 enrolled participants. Data were analyzed from September 2021 through October 2022. Main Outcomes and Measures: Participants were surveyed at diagnosis, 3 months postdiagnosis, and 6 months postdiagnosis. Caregiver burden was evaluated with the 19-item Social Support Survey (scored 0-100, with higher scores indicating more support), Caregiver Reaction Assessment (CRA; scored 0-5, with higher scores on 4 subscales [disrupted schedule, financial problems, lack of family support, and health problems] indicating negative reactions, and higher scores on the fifth subscale [self-esteem] indicating favorable influence); and 3-item Loneliness Scale (scored 3-9, with higher scores indicating greater loneliness). Patient health-related quality of life was assessed using the University of Washington Quality of Life scale (UW-QOL; scored 0-100, with higher scores indicating better QOL). Results: Of the 96 enrolled participants, half were women (48 [50%]), and a majority were White (92 [96%]), married or living with a partner (81 [84%]), and working (51 [53%]). Of these participants, 60 (63%) completed surveys at diagnosis and at least 1 follow-up. Of the 30 caregivers, most were women (24 [80%]), White (29 [97%]), married or living with a partner (28 [93%]), and working (22 [73%]). Caregivers of nonworking patients reported higher scores on the CRA subscale for health problems than caregivers of working patients (mean difference, 0.41; 95% CI, 0.18-0.64). Caregivers of patients with UW-QOL social/emotional (S/E) subscale scores of 62 or lower at diagnosis reported increased scores on the CRA subscale for health problems (UW-QOL-S/E score of 22: CRA score mean difference, 1.12; 95% CI, 0.48-1.77; UW-QOL-S/E score of 42: CRA score mean difference, 0.74; 95% CI, 0.34-1.15; and UW-QOL-S/E score of 62: CRA score mean difference, 0.36; 95% CI, 0.14-0.59). Woman caregivers had statistically significant worsening scores on the Social Support Survey (mean difference, -9.18; 95% CI, -17.14 to -1.22). The proportion of lonely caregivers increased over treatment. Conclusions and Relevance: This cohort study highlights patient- and caregiver-specific factors that are associated with increased CGB. Results further demonstrate the potential implications for negative health outcomes for caregivers of patients who are not working and have lower health-related quality of life.

When communicating about political issues, messages targeted to resonate with the core values of the receiver may be effective, an approach known as moral reframing. During the COVID-19 pandemic, we tested the relationships between moral values and mask-wearing in a sample (N = 540) of self-identified liberals, conservatives, and moderates in the United States. Anti-mask attitudes were stronger in conservatives, and were associated with increased concerns for in-group loyalty, national identity, and personal liberty. We then crafted messages about the benefits of mask-wearing framed to resonate with these moral concerns, and in a pre-registered study of N = 597 self-identified U.S. conservatives, tested the effect of moral reframing on anti-mask attitudes and behaviors. Messages framed in terms of loyalty, with appeals to the protection of the community and America, were effective in reducing anti-mask beliefs, compared with unrelated control messages and messages delivering purely scientific information, and these changes in belief persisted for at least 1 week. Exploratory analyses showed that participants who saw loyalty-framed messages reported wearing masks in public more frequently in the subsequent week. This study provides evidence that framing messages about health behaviors in terms of group loyalty may be one productive way of communicating with conservative audiences.

Context: Metabolic disorders such as obesity represent a major health challenge. Obesity alone has reached epidemic proportions, with at least 2.8 million people worldwide dying annually from diseases caused by overweight or obesity. The brain-metabolic axis is central to maintain homeostasis under metabolic stress via an intricate signaling network of hormones. Protein interacting with C kinase 1 (PICK1) is important for the biogenesis of various secretory vesicles, and we have previously shown that PICK1-deficient mice have impaired secretion of insulin and growth hormone. Objective: The aim was to investigate how global PICK1-deficient mice respond to high-fat diet (HFD) and assess its role in insulin secretion in diet-induced obesity. Methods: We characterized the metabolic phenotype through assessment of body weight, composition, glucose tolerance, islet morphology insulin secretion in vivo, and glucose-stimulated insulin secretion ex vivo. Results: PICK1-deficient mice displayed similar weight gain and body composition as wild-type (WT) mice following HFD. While HFD impaired glucose tolerance of WT mice, PICK1-deficient mice were resistant to further deterioration of their glucose tolerance compared with already glucose-impaired chow-fed PICK1-deficient mice. Surprisingly, mice with ß-cell-specific knockdown of PICK1 showed impaired glucose tolerance both on chow and HFD similar to WT mice. Conclusion: Our findings support the importance of PICK1 in overall hormone regulation. However, importantly, this effect is independent of the PICK1 expression in the ß-cell, whereby global PICK1-deficient mice resist further deterioration of their glucose tolerance following diet-induced obesity.

The gut microbiota impacts systemic levels of multiple metabolites including NAD+ precursors through diverse pathways. Nicotinamide riboside (NR) is an NAD+ precursor capable of regulating mammalian cellular metabolism. Some bacterial families express the NR-specific transporter, PnuC. We hypothesized that dietary NR supplementation would modify the gut microbiota across intestinal sections. We determined the effects of 12 weeks of NR supplementation on the microbiota composition of intestinal segments of high-fat diet-fed (HFD) rats. We also explored the effects of 12 weeks of NR supplementation on the gut microbiota in humans and mice. In rats, NR reduced fat mass and tended to decrease body weight. Interestingly, NR increased fat and energy absorption but only in HFD-fed rats. Moreover, 16S rRNA gene sequencing analysis of intestinal and fecal samples revealed an increased abundance of species within Erysipelotrichaceae and Ruminococcaceae families in response to NR. PnuC-positive bacterial strains within these families showed an increased growth rate when supplemented with NR. The abundance of species within the Lachnospiraceae family decreased in response to HFD irrespective of NR. Alpha and beta diversity and bacterial composition of the human fecal microbiota were unaltered by NR, but in mice, the fecal abundance of species within Lachnospiraceae increased while abundances of Parasutterella and Bacteroides dorei species decreased in response to NR. In conclusion, oral NR altered the gut microbiota in rats and mice, but not in humans. In addition, NR attenuated body fat mass gain in rats, and increased fat and energy absorption in the HFD context.

The ability of insulin to stimulate glucose uptake in skeletal muscle is important for whole-body glycemic control. Insulin-stimulated skeletal muscle glucose uptake is improved in the period after a single bout of exercise, and accumulating evidence suggests that phosphorylation of TBC1D4 by the protein kinase AMPK is the primary mechanism responsible for this phenomenon. To investigate this, we generated a TBC1D4 knock-in mouse model with a serine-to-alanine point mutation at residue 711 that is phosphorylated in response to both insulin and AMPK activation. Female TBC1D4-S711A mice exhibited normal growth and eating behavior as well as intact whole-body glycemic control on chow and high-fat diets. Moreover, muscle contraction increased glucose uptake, glycogen utilization, and AMPK activity similarly in wild-type and TBC1D4-S711A mice. In contrast, improvements in whole-body and muscle insulin sensitivity after exercise and contractions were only evident in wild-type mice and occurred concomitantly with enhanced phosphorylation of TBC1D4-S711. These results provide genetic evidence to support that TBC1D4-S711 serves as a major point of convergence for AMPK- and insulin-induced signaling that mediates the insulin-sensitizing effect of exercise and contractions on skeletal muscle glucose uptake.
