Reciprocating living kidney donor generosity: tax credits, health insurance and an outcomes registry.

Kidney transplantation significantly improves patient survival, and is the most cost effective renal replacement option compared with dialysis therapy. Living kidney donors provide a valuable societal gift, but face many formidable disincentive barriers that include not only short- and long-term health risks, but also concerns regarding financial expenditures and health insurance. Other than governmental coverage for their medical evaluation and surgical expenses, donors are often asked to personally bear a significant financial responsibility due to lost work wages and travel expenses. In order to alleviate this economic burden for donors, we advocate for the consideration of tax credits, lifelong health insurance coverage, and an outcomes registry as societal reciprocity to reward their altruistic act of kidney donation.

Synthesis and biological study of medicinally important Mannich bases derived from 4-(dimethylamino)-1,4,4a,5,5a,6,11,12a-octahydro-3,6,10,12,12a pentahydroxy naphthacene carboxamide.

The paper describes synthesis and antibacterial study of biologically active Mannich bases of carboxamide derivative employing Mannich reaction of 4-(dimethylamino)-1,4,4a,5,5a,6,11,12a-octahydro-3,6,10,12,12a pentahydroxy naphthacene carboxamide with various sulfonamides/secondary amines . They were analysed by elemental analysis and characterized by UV, IR and (1)H NMR spectroscopic studies. The Mannich bases were screened for antibacterial activity against various gram-negative bacteria at various concentrations and were analysed statistically. The result has shown that the compounds are quite active against pathogens under study and were non-toxic. All the synthesized compounds were found to be low lethal as ascertained by LD50 test.

QSAR study on the antibacterial activity of some sulfa drugs: building blockers of Mannich bases.

Sulfa drugs are building blockers of several types of Mannich bases. Consequently, the antibacterial activities of sulfa drugs are reported in this paper, which will help in explaining and understanding antibacterial activities of Mannich bases. Reported QSAR is carried out using distance-based topological indices and discussed critically on the basis of statistical parameters.

Synthesis and in vitro study of novel Mannich bases as antibacterial agents.

A series of novel Mannich bases derived from 5-chloro-2-methoxybenzamide and sulfonamides/amines have been synthesised and the antibacterial activities were evaluated against various Gram positive and Gram negative strains of bacteria. Some of the synthesized compounds showed superior in vitro activities as compared to their parent sulfonamides.

Correlations between the benzene character of acenes or helicenes and simple molecular descriptors.

Aromatic stabilities of acenes and helicenes, which are responsible for their biological, environmental and cancerous behavior have been modeled using a newly introduced Sadhana (Sd) and A indices. The results are compared with those obtained from PI (Padmakar-Ivan) index. The regression analysis has shown that excellent results are obtained by considering acenes and helicenes as separate classes of isomeric benzenoid hydrocarbons and that A index is better index than both PI and Sd indices.

The Mannich bases were screened for their antibacterial activity against various gram positive and gram negative bacteria and were analyzed statistically. The results have shown that the compounds are quiet active against pathogens under study and were nontoxic.

QSAR study on bioconcentration factor (BCF) of polyhalogented biphenyls using the PI index.

Attempt has been made to estimate the accuracy, predictive power, and domain of application of the PI (Padmakar-Ivan) index for modeling bioconcentration factor (BCF) of polyhalogenated biphenyls. Relative potential of PI index is investigated by comparing the results obtained using this index with those obtained from Wiener (W) and Szeged (Sz) indices. In addition, attempt has also been made to model hydrophobicity/lipophilicity (logP) of the polyhalogenated biphenyls using these indices. It was observed that these distance-based topological indices gave better results for modeling log BCF than logP.

QSAR study on solubility of alkanes in water and their partition coefficients in different solvent systems using PI index.

The aqueous solubility (S(w)) of liquids and solids, expressed as log S(w) as well as their partition coefficients in different solvent systems viz. P(oct) (partition coefficient in octanol-water), P(16) (partition coefficient in water-hexadecane), P(alk) (partition coefficient in water-alkane), and P(cyc) (partition coefficient in water-cyclohexane), and aqueous solubility (S(w)) have been estimated using the PI (Padmakar-Ivan) index and the results compared with those obtained using the widely used Wiener index (W). Regression analysis of the data using n-alkanes show that the PI index gives better results than the W index.
