OBJECTIVE: This study seeks to evaluate the association between the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection and the severity of depression and anxiety in the Korean community during the period dominated by the Omicron variant. METHODS: We used data from the 2022 Daejeon Mental Health Survey, involving data of 985 participants aged 19-69 years. The data collected included SARS-CoV-2 infection experience, days post-infection, and depression and anxiety symptoms evaluated using the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 and the Generalized Anxiety Disorder Questionnaire-7, respectively. Additionally, physical health, social activity status, and sociodemographic characteristics such as gender, age, marital status, educational level, and household income were collected. The association between SARS-CoV-2 infection and depression and anxiety were examined. Further analyses explored association between days post- infection and the severity of depression and anxiety. RESULTS: There was no significant correlation between SARS-CoV-2 infection and depression and anxiety in the overall population. Notably, participants under 50 years of age exhibited a transient worsening of depression and anxiety, followed by a decrease in symptoms within 40 days. Participants aged 51 years and older showed no significant change in depression and anxiety. CONCLUSION: This study discerned transient effects of Omicron variant infection on depression and anxiety, particularly in younger individuals. A prospective study encompassing a larger sample size is imperative to investigate the influence of SARS-CoV-2 infection on depression and anxiety.

BACKGROUND: A transformation towards healthy diets through a sustainable food system is essential to enhance both human and planet health. Development of a valid, multidimensional, quantitative index of a sustainable diet would allow monitoring progress in the US population. We evaluated the content and construct validity of a sustainable diet index for US adults (SDI-US) based on data collected at the individual level. METHODS: The SDI-US, adapted from the SDI validated in the French population, was developed using data on US adults aged 20 years and older from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, 2007-2018 (n = 25,543). The index consisted of 4 sub-indices, made up of 12 indicators, corresponding to 4 dimensions of sustainable diets (nutritional quality, environmental impacts, affordability (economic), and ready-made product use behaviors (sociocultural)). A higher SDI-US score indicates greater alignment with sustainable diets (range: 4-20). Validation analyses were performed, including the assessment of the relevance of each indicator, correlations between individual indicators, sub-indices, and total SDI-US, differences in scores between sociodemographic subgroups, and associations with selected food groups in dietary guidelines, the alternative Mediterranean diet (aMed) score, and the EAT-Lancet diet score. RESULTS: Total SDI-US mean was 13.1 (standard error 0.04). The correlation between SDI-US and sub-indices ranged from 0.39 for the environmental sub-index to 0.61 for the economic sub-index (Pearson Correlation coefficient). The correlation between a modified SDI-US after removing each sub-index and the SDI-US ranged from 0.83 to 0.93. aMed scores and EAT-Lancet diet scores were significantly higher among adults in the highest SDI-US quintile compared to the lowest quintile (aMed: 4.6 vs. 3.2; EAT-Lancet diet score: 9.9 vs. 8.7 p < .0001 for both). CONCLUSIONS: Overall, content and construct validity of the SDI-US were acceptable. The SDI-US reflected the key features of sustainable diets by integrating four sub-indices, comparable to the SDI-France. The SDI-US can be used to assess alignment with sustainable diets in the US. Continued monitoring of US adults' diets using the SDI-US could help improve dietary sustainability.

Background: The effects of excessive ultra-processed food (UPF) consumption on body composition measures or sociodemographic disparities are understudied in Korea. We aimed to investigate the association of UPF intake with percent body fat (PBF) and percent appendicular skeletal muscle mass (PASM) by sociodemographic status in adults. Methods: This study used data from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2008-2011 (n=11,123 aged ≥40 years). We used a NOVA system to classify all foods reported in a 24-hour dietary recall, and the percentage of energy intake (%kcal) from UPFs was estimated. PBF and PASM were measured by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. Tertile (T) 3 of PBF indicated adiposity and T1 of PASM indicated low skeletal muscle mass, respectively. Multinomial logistic regression models were used to estimate odds ratios (OR) with 95% confidence interval (CI) after adjusting covariates. Results: UPF intake was positively associated with PBF-defined adiposity (ORper 10% increase, 1.04; 95% CI, 1.002 to 1.08) and low PASM (ORper 10% increase, 1.05; 95% CI, 1.01 to 1.09). These associations were stronger in rural residents (PBF: ORper 10% increase, 1.14; 95% CI, 1.06 to 1.23; PASM: ORper 10% increase, 1.15; 95% CI, 1.07 to 1.23) and not college graduates (PBF: ORper 10% increase, 1.06; 95% CI, 1.02 to 1.11; PASM: ORper 10% increase, 1.07; 95% CI, 1.03 to 1.12) than their counterparts. Conclusion: A higher UPF intake was associated with higher adiposity and lower skeletal muscle mass among Korean adults aged 40 years and older, particularly in those from rural areas and with lower education levels.

BACKGROUND: Sustainable dietary patterns that incorporate multiple dimensions may have benefits for both human health and the environment. We examined the association between sustainable dietary patterns assessed by using the Sustainable Diet Index-US (SDI-US) and mortality in US adults. METHODS: This study used data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2007-18 (N = 22 414 aged ≥20 years). The SDI-US (range: 4-20) was composed of four sub-indices representing nutritional, environmental, economic and sociocultural dimensions, and was computed using 24-h dietary recalls, food expenditures and food preparation habits. A higher score indicates a more sustainable dietary pattern. All-cause mortality from baseline until 31 December 2019 was obtained through linkage to the National Death Index. Hazard ratios (HRs) with 95% CIs were estimated using Cox proportional-hazards models, adjusting for covariates. RESULTS: During 150 386 person-years of follow-up, 2100 total deaths occurred and the median SDI-US was 9.8 in Quintile 1 (Q1) and 16.3 in Quintile 5 (Q5). In a multivariable-adjusted model, the highest SDI-US quintile was associated with a 36% reduction in mortality risk (Q5 vs Q1, HR 0.64, 95% CI 0.49-0.84, P = 0.002) compared with the lowest quintile. When stratified by age (P interaction = 0.002), an inverse association between SDI-US and mortality was observed in younger adults (<65 years, HR 0.41, 95% CI 0.25-0.68, P = 0.001) but not in older adults (≥65 years, HR 0.91, 95% CI 0.71-1.16, P = 0.15). CONCLUSIONS: A higher SDI-US score was associated with lower mortality risk among US adults, particularly in younger adults.

PURPOSE: Unfavorable changes in eating patterns over time may contribute to upward trends in chronic diseases, such as obesity. We examined 20-year trends in the percentage of energy from main meals and snacks and the food sources of each eating occasion among Korean adults. METHODS: This study used nationally representative data from the 1st, 4th, and 7th Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys (1998, 2007-2009, and 2016-2018) among adults aged 20-69 years (n = 29,389). Each eating occasion (breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks) was defined by respondents during a 24-h dietary recall interview. To identify the food sources of each eating occasion, we used the NOVA system. The percentage of energy at each eating occasion and that from each NOVA group across survey cycles were estimated, and tests for linear trends were conducted using orthogonal polynomial contrasts in linear regression models. All analyses accounted for the complex survey design. RESULTS: After adjusting for age and sex, the percentage of energy from breakfast decreased from 25.0% in 1998 to 16.7% in 2018 (difference, - 8.2%; standard error [SE], 0.3), whereas that from dinner and snacks increased from 31.1 to 33.8% (difference, + 2.7%; SE, 0.4) and from 14.0 to 19.0% (difference, + 5.0%; SE, 0.5), respectively (all P < 0.001). At all eating occasions, the percentage of energy from minimally processed foods declined (difference, - 18.6% for breakfast; - 13.1% for lunch; - 21.1% for dinner; - 20.7% for snacks), while that from ultra-processed foods increased (difference, + 17.0% for breakfast; + 11.3% for lunch; + 18.0% for dinner; + 30.7% for snacks). When stratified by age, the given trends were shown to a greater extent in younger adults (< 50 years old) than in older adults (≥ 50 years old). CONCLUSIONS: The eating patterns of Korean adults changed from 1998 to 2018, with the greatest decrease in energy intake from breakfast and the greatest increase from snacking. At all eating occasions, the contribution of minimally processed foods declined, while that of ultra-processed foods increased, especially among younger adults.

OBJECTIVES: Chrono-nutrition emphasizes meal timing in preventing obesity and metabolic disorders. This study explores the impact of temporal dietary patterns (TDPs) on obesity and metabolic syndrome (MetS) in Korean adults aged 20 years to 65 years. METHODS: We utilized dynamic time warping method and Kernel k-means clustering to investigate diet quality and the odds ratios (ORs) of obesity and MetS with different TDPs using data from the 7th Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. RESULTS: Participants were divided into three groups based on relative energy intake over 24 hours. After adjusting for age and gender, Cluster 3 (with the highest proportion of energy intake in the evening) had the lowest Healthy Eating Index scores compared to other clusters. Following adjustment for key covariates, Cluster 3 showed the highest values for body mass index, waist circumference, blood pressure, total cholesterol, and triglycerides. Compared to Cluster 1 (with a lower proportion of energy intake in the evening), Cluster 2 and Cluster 3 had ORs for obesity of 1.12 (95% confidence interval [CI], 0.97 to 1.30) and 1.19 (95% CI, 1.03 to 1.37), respectively. For MetS, the ORs were 1.26 (95% CI, 1.08 to 1.48) and 1.37 (95% CI, 1.17 to 1.61) when comparing Cluster 2 and Cluster 3 to Cluster 1. CONCLUSIONS: This study reveals that individuals with higher energy intake in the evening have increased odds of obesity and MetS, even after adjusting for major covariates, including age and total energy intake.

In this study, the characteristics in the lead-free piezoelectric ceramic 0.5Ba(Zr0.2Ti0.8)O3-0.5(Ba0.7Ca0.3)TiO3 (0.5BZT-0.5BCT) were investigated to assess its potential for Rosen-type piezoelectric transformers. This piezoelectric ceramic has a piezoelectric charge coefficient d33 of 430 pC/N, an electromechanical coupling factor kp of 49%, a dielectric constant εr of 2836, a remnant polarization Pr of 4.98 µC/cm2, and a coercive electric field Ec of 2.41 kV/cm. Sb2O3 was soft doped with 0.05, 0.1, 0.15, and 0.2 mol%, respectively, and exhibited excellent physical properties at 0.1 mol%. Based on this, a piezoelectric transformer was fabricated and measured, and it showed better output characteristics than pure 0.5BZT-0.5BCT. The amplification ratio (Vout/Vin) was optimized based on the device geometry and properties of the piezoelectric material. Moreover, the output characteristics of the Rosen-type piezoelectric transformer were simulated with the PSpice program. Output values of the fabricated and simulated piezoelectric transformers for the r vibrational frequency were compared and analyzed. Accordingly, the step-up amplification ratios Vout/Vin of the fabricated and simulated devices at the vibrational frequency were compared as well. This piezoelectric transformer could replace silicon steel transformers and be used for the creation of black light and for laptop chargers.

OBJECTIVE: Adopting multidimensional sustainable dietary patterns may be beneficial to human and planetary health. The cross-sectional association between a multidimensional sustainable diet index-US (SDI-US) and obesity in US adults was examined. METHODS: This study used National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) data from 2007 to 2018 (n = 25,262). The SDI-US consisted of four subindices and was calculated using a 24-hour dietary recall, food expenditures, environmental impacts of foods, and food practices. A higher score indicates a more sustainable dietary pattern. Obesity was defined as BMI ≥ 30 kg/m2 . Logistic regression models were used to estimate odds ratios (OR) with 95% CI. RESULTS: Between 2007 and 2018, obesity prevalence in US adults was 38.2% (95% CI 37.0%-39.3%), and mean SDI-US score was 13.2 (range: 4.3-20.0). In a multivariable-adjusted model, a higher SDI-US score was associated with lower odds of obesity (Q5 vs. Q1, OR 0.68, 95% CI 0.58-0.79, p < 0.001). When stratified by sex (p interaction = 0.04), a stronger inverse association was observed in women (OR 0.64, 95% CI 0.53-0.77, p < 0.0001) than in men (OR 0.74, 95% CI 0.60-0.91, p = 0.01). CONCLUSIONS: More sustainable dietary patterns were inversely associated with obesity among US adults, supporting the potential of sustainable diets in preventing obesity.

OBJECTIVES: Different approaches for analyzing repeated dietary measurements may yield differences in the magnitude and interpretation of findings. We aimed to compare 3 dietary measurements (baseline, most recent, and cumulative average) in terms of the association between plant-based diet indices (PDIs) and incident abdominal obesity in Korean adults aged 40-69 years. METHODS: This study included 6,054 participants (54% women) free of abdominal obesity (defined as waist circumference ≥90 cm for men and ≥85 cm for women) at baseline. As exposures, baseline, most recent, and cumulative average measurements for PDI, healthy-PDI (hPDI), and unhealthy-PDI (uPDI) were created. A Cox proportional-hazard model was used to estimate the hazard ratios (HRs) for abdominal obesity. RESULTS: During 45,818 person-years of follow-up (median, 9 years), we identified 1,778 incident cases of abdominal obesity. In the multivariable-adjusted analysis, a higher uPDI was associated with a higher risk of abdominal obesity in both total and stratified analyses. The findings were consistent across all approaches (Q5 vs. Q1: HRbaseline=1.70; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.46 to 1.98; HRmost recent=1.52; 95% CI, 1.30 to 1.78; HRcumulative average=1.76; 95% CI, 1.51 to 2.06 in the total set). PDI showed no meaningful association with abdominal obesity risk in any analyses. hPDIaverage had a suggestive inverse association with abdominal obesity risk in men, and hPDIbaseline had a positive association with abdominal obesity risk in women. CONCLUSIONS: Greater adherence to unhealthy plant-based diets may increase the risk of developing abdominal obesity in Korean adults. The findings were generally consistent across all approaches.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: The association between nutritional status and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) among patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is not fully understood. This study was conducted to understand the role of nutritional status on HRQoL among people with and without T2DM. SUBJECTS/METHODS: Structured survey and direct measurement of anthropometric data were conducted among people with and without T2DM. Nutritional status was measured with Mini Nutritional Assessment tool and HRQoL was measured with a 36-item Short Form Healthy Survey. Data collection was conducted in Chuncheon, South Korea with 756 participants who are older than 40 yrs of age. RESULTS: This study found that overall HRQoL were significantly lower in people with T2DM than people without T2DM after controlling for key covariates. When stratified by nutritional status, a greater degree of negative impact of T2DM on overall physical HRQoL was observed among well-nourished or at risk of malnutrition, whereas significant and more evident negative impact of diabetes on overall psychological HRQoL was observed only among malnourished. CONCLUSIONS: The study results suggest the role of nutritional status among people with T2DM on overall, especially psychological aspects of HRQoL. Future longitudinal or intervention studies are warranted to test the impact of nutritional status on HRQoL among people with T2DM.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the performance of an FFQ for estimating dietary contributions of NOVA groups to individuals' diets with a specific focus on ultra-processed foods (UPF) compared with a single 24-h dietary recall (24HR). DESIGN: All consumed foods and beverages assess with both a 109-item FFQ and a single 24HR were classified into one of four NOVA groups: natural or minimally processed foods (MPF), processed culinary ingredients (PCI), processed foods (PF) and UPF. The contributions of each NOVA group to daily intakes of energy, protein, fat, saturated fat, carbohydrate, fibre and Na were expressed as crude intake, energy-adjusted intake and percentage intake. Mean differences, correlation coefficients and joint classification were calculated for intakes of energy and nutrients from each NOVA group between the FFQ and the 24HR. SETTING: The Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2016. PARTICIPANTS: Adults aged 19-64 years (n 3189). RESULTS: The smallest group-mean differences between the two methods were observed in UPF (2-40 %). The greatest average Pearson's correlation coefficients between the FFQ and 24HR were shown in dietary contributions of UPF (r = 0·22-0·25 for MPF; r = 0·02-0·05 for PCI; r = 0·11-0·18 for PF; r = 0·26-0·30 for UPF). The greatest agreement in quartile classification between the FFQ and the 24HR was observed in dietary contributions of UPF (70·0-71·5 % for MPF; 64·2-68·8 % for PCI; 66·9-69·2 % for PF; 71·8-73·9 % for UPF). CONCLUSIONS: The use of the FFQ for estimating absolute intake of UPF may not be encouraged in its current form, but it still may be used for relative comparisons such as quantile categorisation.

PURPOSE: Maintaining optimal blood pressure (BP) levels can be an effective preventive strategy for reducing disease burden. Nut consumption may play a preventive role against hypertension, which is a lifelong condition. We aimed to prospectively examine the association between cumulative average nut consumption and the incidence of hypertension in Korean adults aged 40 years and older. METHODS: A total of 10,347 participants who were free of hypertension at baseline, were included. Hypertension was defined as having a physician diagnosis and taking antihypertensive medications or having abnormal BP (systolic ≥ 140 mmHg or diastolic ≥ 90 mmHg). As an exposure, cumulative average nut consumption was calculated using repeated food-frequency questionnaires (mean: 2.1). We used a modified Poisson regression model with a robust error estimator to estimate the incidence rate ratios (IRRs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for hypertension. RESULTS: We identified 2047 incident cases of hypertension during 44,614 person-years of follow-up. Among both men and women, an average nut consumption of ≥ 1 serving/week (15 g/week]) was inversely associated with hypertension incidence (IRR = 0.74, 95% CI = 0.58-0.96, p for trend = 0.013 for men; IRR = 0.72, 95% CI = 0.59-0.88, p for trend = 0.002 for women) and these significant associations were consistently observed across the strata of potential confounders. CONCLUSION: An average consumption of at least one serving (15 g) per week of peanuts, almonds, and/or pine nuts may be inversely associated with the risk of hypertension among Korean adults aged 40 years and older, in a dose-response manner.

Given the dynamic characteristic of an individual's drinking behaviours, comprehensive consideration of alcohol consumption variation using repeated measures may improve insight into the nature of its association with blood pressure (BP) change. We examined the association between longitudinal alcohol consumption (trajectory and quantity) and changes in BP and pulse pressure (PP) among Korean aged ≥ 40 years living in rural areas. Totally, 1682 hypertension-free participants who completed all three health examinations (median, 5·3 years) were included. All three visits were used to determine the cumulative trajectory of and quantity of alcohol consumption and the latest two visits and the last visit were used for the recent trajectory and the most recent quantity of alcohol consumption, respectively. Changes in BP and PP from the baseline to the third visit were used as outcome. In men, ≥30 ml/d cumulative average alcohol consumption was associated with the greatest increase in systolic BP (SBP) in both baseline outcome-unadjusted (2·9 mmHg, P = 0·032) and -adjusted models (3·6 mmHg, P = 0·001), and the given association for the most recent alcohol consumption was observed in the baseline outcome-adjusted model (3·9 mmHg, P = 0·003). For PP, similar associations were observed only in the baseline outcome-adjusted model. No meaningful associations in diastolic BP in men and any BP or PP in women existed. The quantity of alcohol consumption rather than the trajectory may be significantly related to raised SBP, and a possible short-term influence of the most recent alcohol consumption may exist when baseline SBP is adjusted in men.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Managing alcohol consumption may be an effective way of preventing hypertension, which is an important modifiable risk factor for cardiovascular diseases. However, there is little evidence on the temporal relationship between alcohol consumption and incidence of hypertension. We investigated the prospective association between repeated measures of alcohol consumption and hypertension incidence among Korean adults aged 40 and over. METHODS: This study included a total of 4989 participants that were not taking antihypertensive drugs and had normal blood pressure (BP) (systolic < 140 mmHg and diastolic < 90 mmHg). We used three measures of alcohol consumption (baseline, most recent, and average) as exposures and compared the three approaches. Using a modified Poisson regression model with a robust error estimator, we estimated incidence rate ratios (IRRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for hypertension. RESULTS: Over a total of 17,689 person-years (average 3.5 years of follow-up), 574 incident cases of hypertension were identified. In multivariable models, consuming ≥30 ml/d of alcohol was associated with a risk of hypertension among men (IRR = 1.72, 95% CI = 1.20-2.48, p trend = 0.017 for baseline alcohol consumption; IRR = 1.69, 95% CI = 1.23-2.33, p trend = 0.005 for the most recent alcohol consumption; IRR = 1.49, 95% CI = 1.09-2.03, p trend = 0.014 for average alcohol consumption). After additional adjustment for baseline BP the positive association remained only when the most recent alcohol consumption measure was used. There was no significant association between alcohol consumption and hypertension among women, and no interaction effect between alcohol consumption and baseline BP levels on incidence of hypertension (all p interaction > 0.05) existed. CONCLUSIONS: Alcohol consumption, especially consuming ≥30 ml/d, may be positively linked with incidence risk of hypertension among men.

PURPOSE: Subclinical vascular damage is a chronic intermediate process in cardiovascular disease (CVD) and high sodium (Na) has been regarded as an adverse factor in subclinical vascular health; however, the longitudinal relationship between Na intake and subclinical vascular damage has not been studied. We aimed to evaluate the longitudinal relationship of dietary Na intake and sodium to potassium ratio (Na:K) with brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity (baPWV) and carotid intima media thickness (cIMT) in healthy adults aged 40 years and older in Korea. METHODS: The present study was based on participants (n = 2145 for baPWV analysis and n = 2494 for cIMT analysis) who visited three times during 2005-2013 (median 5.3 years of follow-up). We used both dietary Na intake and Na:K at baseline and its average (baseline, 2nd, 3rd), which was obtained from food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) as exposure at every visit. baPWV and cIMT levels at the third visit and change from baseline to the third visit were used to represent the level of subclinical vascular damage. RESULTS: After adjustment for potential confounders, significant positive relationships between dietary Na intake and both baPWV3rd and cIMT3rd were observed (baPWV: p for trend ≤ 0.0001 for Naaverage; cIMT: p for trend = 0.013 for Naaverage). Compared with Na:Ks less than 1.0, the levels of both baPWV and cIMT were higher for participants with Na:Ks over 1.0 (baPWV: p for trend = 0.0002 for Na:Kaverage; cIMT: p for trend = 0.005 for Na:Kaverage). Similar significant trends were shown in relationships between dietary Na intake and Na:K and changes in baPWV and cIMT levels. CONCLUSIONS: In conclusion, dietary Na intake and Na:K may be positively linked to subsequent baPWV and cIMT levels in adults aged 40 years and older in Korea. Our findings may provide informative evidence on subclinical vascular damage, particularly for populations with relatively high dietary Na intake and low dietary K intake.

The objective of this study is to find single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) associated with a risk of Type 2 diabetes (T2D) in Korean adults and to investigate the longitudinal association between these SNPs and T2D and the interaction effects of iron intake and average hemoglobin level. Data from the KoGES_Ansan and Ansung Study were used. Gene-iron interaction analysis was conducted using a two-step approach. To select candidate SNPs associated with T2D, a total of 7,935 adults at baseline were included in genome-wide association analysis (step one). After excluding T2D prevalent cases, prospective analyses were conducted with 7,024 adults aged 40-69 (step two). The association of selected SNPs and iron status with T2D and their interaction were determined using a Cox proportional hazard model. A total of 3 SNPs [rs9465871 (CDKAL1), rs10761745 (JMJD1C), and rs163177 (KCNQ1)] were selected as candidate SNPs related to T2D. Among them, rs10761745 (JMJD1C) and rs163177 (KCNQ1) were prospectively associated with T2D. High iron intake was also prospectively associated with the risk of T2D after adjusting for covariates. Average hemoglobin level was positively associated with T2D after adjusting for covariates in women. We also found significant interaction effects between rs10761745 (JMJD1C) and average hemoglobin levels on the risk of T2D among women with normal inflammation and without anemia at baseline. In conclusion, KCNQ1 and JMJD1C may prospectively contribute to the risk of T2D incidence among adults over the age of 40 and JMJD1C, but CDKAL1 may not, and iron status may interactively contribute to T2D incidence in women.

OBJECTIVE: There has been increasing interest in non-skeletal interactions between vitamin D insufficiency, which is common, and cardiovascular event and cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factors. METHODS: To evaluate cross-sectional associations between dietary and serum vitamin D status and metabolic abnormalities and arterial changes among 1054 adults aged ≥40 y (404 men and 650 women) in a rural area of South Korea. Study subjects were divided into three groups according to dietary vitamin D intake (tertiles) measured by food frequency questionnaire and serum 25(OH)D levels (≤20, 21-29, and ≥30 ng/mL). Metabolic components (blood pressure, lipid profiles, and glycemic index) and arterial changes (brachial ankle pulse wave velocity [baPWV] and carotid artery intima-media wall thickness [cIMT]) were measured. RESULTS: Dietary vitamin D was inversely associated with diastolic blood pressure (DBP) and baPWV among men, but the association disappeared after multinutrient supplement users were excluded. Among women, there was an inverse association between dietary vitamin D and triacylglycerol (TG) levels. However, serum 25(OH)D showed a significant positive relationship with HDL cholesterol in both men and women, while a positive linear trend or nonlinear trend with serum 25(OH)D levels was shown in TG levels among men and in systolic blood pressure (SBP), DBP, total cholesterol, and baPWV among women. The positive relationship between serum 25(OH)D with baPWV disappeared after adjustment for blood pressure. CONCLUSIONS: Serum 25(OH)D may be favorably related to HDL cholesterol. However, serum 25(OH)D may not favorably related to subclinical atherosclerosis and arterial stiffness measured by cIMT and baPWV. The positive relationship between 25(OH)D and baPWV is likely to be mediated by blood pressure.

BACKGROUND & AIM: Understanding the lifestyle and genetic factors that affect pulse wave velocity (PWV) may provide clues to preventing atherosclerotic cardiovascular events. The aim of this study is to investigate genome-wide genetic and dietary calcium (Ca) intake interaction effects on brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity (baPWV). METHODS: The baPWV was measured, and Ca intake was quantified by administering a food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) to 3198 participants, which included men and women (≥40 years) from the Korean Multi-Rural communities Cohort study (MRCohort). The interaction effects of dietary Ca intake and 19 single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) on baPWV were assessed using the general linear models. RESULTS: Dietary Ca intake was not significantly associated with baPWV or any type of SNP among the subjects herein. In men, however, the adducin1 (ADD1) rs4961_C SNP had a significant dietary Ca intake-dependent effect on mean baPWV (pinteraction = 0.002). In women, the interaction of zinc finger proteins 618 (ZNF618) rs10817542_A with dietary Ca intake played a significant and key role in mean baPWV (pinteraction = 0.001). In the results of ADD1 rs4961_C in men and ZNF618 rs10817542_A in women, the minor allele-lowest Ca intake tertile (T1) group had significantly higher mean baPWV value than other subgroups of Ca intake tertile-genotype cross-classification whereas genotype was not a significant effector on mean baPWV values among highest Ca intake subgroups (T3). CONCLUSIONS: The baPWV, a phenotype of arterial stiffness, can be modulated in subjects through regulation of dietary Ca intake, particularly in subjects with more vulnerable genotypes.

PURPOSE: The interaction between genetics and diet may explain the present disagreement in the protective role of vitamin intake on cardiovascular disease. We cross-sectionally assessed the interaction of habitual dietary intake of ß-carotene, vitamin C, folate, and vitamin E with single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) on brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity (baPWV), a measure of arterial stiffness. METHODS: Dietary intakes of ß-carotene, vitamin C, folate, and vitamin E were quantified by a food frequency questionnaire in 3198 healthy men and women (≥ 40 years) from the Korea Multi-Rural communities Cohort study. baPWV was measured, and 19 SNPs were genotyped. The associations and interactions between dietary vitamin intake, SNP genotype, and baPWV were assessed using general linear models. RESULTS: In both men and women, dietary intake of ß-carotene, vitamin C, folate, or vitamin E and baPWV were not directly associated. Vitamin C, folate, and vitamin E intake had an interaction with rs4961 (ADD1) genotype on baPWV in men. rs4961 also interacted with folate intake on baPWV in women. In women, rs10817542 (ZNF618) and rs719856 (CD2AP) had an interaction with ß-carotene and folate intake and rs5443 (GNB3) had an interaction with vitamin E intake on baPWV. In general, minor allele homozygotes with low vitamin intake had higher baPWV than other subgroups. Results were similar when supplement users were excluded. CONCLUSIONS: Higher intake of dietary vitamin C, folate, and vitamin E may be related to high baPWV in healthy Korean men who are minor allele homozygotes of rs4961. In healthy Korean women, dietary folate, ß-carotene, and vitamin E intake may affect baPWV differently according to rs4961, rs10817542, rs719856, or rs5443 genotype. Greater dietary intake of these nutrients may protect those that are genetically vulnerable to stiffening of the arteries.
