The removal of pollutants from tannery wastewaters, which is renowned for its substantial volumes, intricate composition, and considerable hazards to human health and the environment, is a prominent research area in the field of water treatment. The aim of this study is to employ a bio-coagulant derived from Parkinsonia aculeata seeds and a bio-flocculant derived from Hibiscus esculentus to minimise the concentration of pollutants in the combined wastewater originating from tanneries. In the course of the research, a thorough physicochemical analysis of the coagulating and flocculating agents, Parkinsonia aculeata (PA) and Hibiscus esculentus (HE), was performed using techniques such as XRD (X-ray diffraction), FTIR (Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy), and SEM-EDS (scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy). This analysis aimed to determine the composition and characteristics of these biomasses. Subsequently, a comprehensive overview was conducted to summarize the various factors that influence the treatment of tannery wastewater through coagulation/flocculation. This was accomplished by manipulating the target factors and observing their impact on the removal of specific physicochemical parameters such as chemical oxygen demand (COD), electrical conductivity (EC), total chromium (Cr) and Optical density (OD). The variables that were established include pH, dosage of coagulant and flocculant, as well as the speed and duration of agitation in both the fast and slow mixing stages. The experiments were carried out while taking into account the optimal parameters, leading to the near-complete removal of all analyzed pollutants. The optimal requirements for the Parkinsonia aculeata-Hibiscus esculentus Coagulation Flocculation System involve adjusting the pH to 8, choosing concentrations of approximately 1.25 g L-1 and 0.6 g L-1 for the coagulant and flocculant respectively, maintaining a fast speed of 170 rpm for 3 min while keeping the slow agitation at around 30 rpm for 20 min. The removal rates achieved after treating tannery wastewater using the PA-HE coagulant-flocculant combination demonstrate high efficacy, with values reaching approximately 100% for TSS, 98.71% for BOD5, 99.93% for COD, 98.88% for NH4+, 98.21% for NO3-, 90.32% for NO2-, 93.13% for SO42-, 95.44% for PO43-, 96.08% for OD and 60% for total chromium. These results indicate the successful removal of a wide range of pollutants from tannery wastewater through the PA-HE treatment method. In predicting the CF treatment approach, PCA has been employed to preprocess the input data and determine the key variables that impact the process. This can streamline the modeling process and enhance the precision of the predictions.

This study aims to investigate the chemical and mineral composition, antioxidant, analgesic, and anti-inflammatory effects of the aqueous extract of Cistus laurifolius var. atlanticus Pit. (Cistaceae). Additionally, molecular docking interactions of various ligands with antioxidant protein target urate oxidase (1R4U) and anti-inflammatory protein target cyclooxygenase-2 (3LN1), revealing potential dual activities and highlighting specific residue interactions. The chemical characterization focused at first glance on the mineral composition which showed that C. laurifolius extract is a mineral-rich source of potassium (K), magnesium (Mg), manganese (Mn), sodium (Na), phosphorus (P), and zinc (Zn). We next performed, ultra-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS/MS) analysis, the latter showed various polyphenols in C. laurifolius extract including Gallic acid as the predominant polyphenol. Isoquercetin, Taxifolin and Astragalin were also among the major flavonoids detected. The antioxidant capacity of C. laurifolius leaves was tested using 2,2'-azino-bis (3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS), 2,2-diphenyl-1- picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and reducing power (RP) assays. In vitro analysis of the anti-inflammatory property of C. laurifolius leaves was conducted by the albumin denaturation test and the in vivo was assessed in the sequel by carrageenan-induced paw edema test. The analgesic activity was evaluated in vivo using tail flick, acetic acid-induced contortion, and plantar tests. The findings showed that the leave extract had a powerful antioxidant activity with an IC50 values of 2.92 ± 0.03 µg/mL (DPPH) and 2.59 ± 0.09 µg/mL (in RP test). The studied extract strongly abolished the induced inflammation (82%). Albumin denaturation test recorded an IC50 value of 210 µg/mL. Importantly, the oral administration of C. laurifolius extract considerably reduced the nociceptive effect of acetic acid in rats, showing a significant analgesic effect in a dose-related manner. Altogether, our results showed that C. laurifolius can be a promising source of phytochemicals for drug development potential.

The aim of this work is to optimise the antibacterial activity of essential oils (EOs) from Eucalyptus camaldulensis (ECEO), Mentha pulegium (MPEO) and Rosmarinus officinalis (ROEO) plants against Salmonella spp. and Escherichia coli. The qualitative antimicrobial effect was assessed using the disc diffusion method, the broth microdilution method was used to determine the minimum inhibitory concentrations (MIC). Polynomial models were created using an augmented centroid simplex mixture design to highlight the synergy of EOs. The results show a significant antibacterial effect of ECEO and MPEO against both bacterial strains, with inhibition zones (IZs) of 13 and 12 mm respectively against E. coli, and 13 and 11 mm against Salmonella spp. The latter strain showed a MIC of 0.625 % (v : v) by the ECEO, while E. coli exhibited a MIC of 0.0781 % (v : v). The binary combinations of essential oils display a synergistic effect, the proportions of the optimum EOs in the mixture giving the lowest MICm were of the order of 50.51 % ECEO and 49.49 % ROEO against Salmonella spp. and around 50 % MPEO and 50 % ECEO against E. coli. These results indicate the effectiveness of binary combinations EOs against resistant bacterial strains and suggest their importance in bacterial infections treatment.

The present study aimed to determine the chemical composition and the synergistic effect of three plants' essential oils (EOs), Eucalyptus camaldulensis (ECEO), Mentha pulegium (MPEO), and Rosmarinus officinalis (ROEO), against three bacterial strains, Proteus mirabilis, Klebsiella pneumoniae, and Staphylococcus aureus, in order to increase the antimicrobial effectiveness by the use of a low dose of essential oils, consequently decreasing the toxicity and negative impact. For this reason, an augmented simplex-centroid mixture design was used to build polynomial models in order to highlight the synergy between the essential oils against bacterial strains. Antimicrobial effect screening was performed by the disc diffusion method and the minimal inhibitory concentrations (MIC) were also studied. The gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC-MS) results show the richness of these essential oils by terpenic compounds, especially 1,8-Cineole and P-Cymene for ECEO, Pulegone for MPEO, and α-Pinene and Camphene for ROEO. Moreover, a significant antibacterial effect has been demonstrated and the best values were revealed by MPEO and ECEO against P. mirabilis and K. pneumoniae, with inhibition zones (IZ) of 25 and 20 mm, respectively, and an MIC of 0.0391% (v:v) against K. pneumoniae. The optimal mixtures showed a synergistic effect of essential oils, and the lowest minimal inhibitory concentrations of the mixtures (MICm) were in the order of 29.38% of MPEO, 45.37% of ECEO, and 25.25% of ROEO against P. mirabilis and in the order of 60.61% of MPEO and 39.39% of ROEO against K. pneumoniae. These results indicate the antibacterial efficacy of the three essential oils combined and suggest their importance in the treatment of urinary tract infections caused by resistant bacterial strains.

The plant Punica granatum L. has several biological activities and a great curative and preventive power against chronic diseases. For this purpose, the objective of this work is to valorize the fruit peel of this plant in the field of phytomedicine, by quantifying and identifying its bioactive compounds and by evaluating their antioxidant and anticrystallization activities against calcium oxalate. This comparative study has been carried out by hydroalcoholic extract (E.PG) and infusion (I.PG) of the plant. The quantification of the phenolic compounds has been performed by spectrophotometric methods, and the chemical species identification has been performed by UPLC-PDA-ESI-MS. Moreover, the examination of the antioxidant activity has been executed by both methods of DPPH and FRAP. The crystallization inhibition has been studied in vitro by the turbidimetric model. The characterization of the synthesized crystals has been accomplished by microscopic observation and by Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy. The results found show the comparable importance of the two plant extracts in the elimination of free radicals; the values of the half maximal inhibitory concentration "IC50" obtained are in the order of 60.87 ± 0.27 and 59.91 ± 0.83 µg/mL by the DPPH method and in the order of 42.17 ± 7.46 and 79.77 ± 6.91 µg/mL by the FRAP method, for both E.PG and I.PG, respectively. Furthermore, the inhibition percentages of calcium oxalate crystallization are in the range of 98.11 ± 0.17 and 98.22 ± 0.71% against the nucleation and in the order of 88.98 ± 0.98 and 88.78 ± 2.48% against the aggregation, for E.PG and I.PG, respectively. These results prove the richness of the plant in bioactive compounds, offering an antioxidant and anticrystallization capacity; therefore, it can be used in the treatment and/or the prevention of stone formation.

OBJECTIVE: The present study aimed to quantify and identify the bioactive compounds of the Arbutus unedo L. leaves in order to evaluate both their antioxidant properties and litholytic activities against calcium oxalate stones. METHODS: This survey was carried out using hydroalcoholic extract (E.FA) and infusion (I.FA) of A. unedo leaves. The quantification of phenolic compounds, flavonoids, flavonols and anthocyanins was done by spectrophotometric methods and identification of chemical components was performed by ultra-performance liquid chromatography with photodiode array and electrospray ionization tandem mass spectrometry. Antioxidant activity was measured using the 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) method and by the ferric reducing/antioxidant power (FRAP) assay. Litholytic activity of E.FA and I.FA was studied using a special model that resembles circuitry of the urinary system. RESULTS: E.FA showed greater antioxidant efficacy than I.FA (P < 0.05). Its higher efficiency was shown via the values of median inhibitory concentration, which was close to (76.14 ±â€¯0.91) µg/mL for E.FA versus (202.64 ±â€¯5.77) µg/mL for I.FA using the DPPH method, and (53.77 ±â€¯0.81) µg/mL for E.FA versus (236.86 ±â€¯31.90) µg/mL for I.FA, using FRAP method. I.FA exhibited significantly higher litholytic activity compared to E.FA (P < 0.05), with dissolution values of 31.03% ±â€¯0.63% versus 14.55% ±â€¯0.65%, respectively. CONCLUSION: Overall, the results suggest that the A. unedo is rich in bioactive compounds, and possesses antioxidant and litholitic abilities that are worthy of further study.

The present study is focused on the experimental verification of the efficiency of Arbutus unedo L. leaves against the crystallization of calcium oxalate. The inhibition of crystallization has been studied in vitro with the absence and the presence of the different concentrations of the infusion and hydroalcoholic extract of the plant. This study consists of measuring, using a UV-Visible spectrophotometer, the temporal evolution of the optical density at λ = 620 nm corresponding to the crystals formation. The latter have been characterized by microscopic observation using an optical microscope, and by Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR). The results suggest a greater effectiveness of the plant infusion with respect to the hydroalcoholic extract against crystallization or nucleation at percentages of 69.41 ± 0.24 or 19.76 ± 0.27% and at 93.92 ± 2.61 and 45.16 ± 3.06% against the aggregation, for both the infusion and the hydroalcoholic extract respectively. A. unedo leaves is a very promising and effective remedy against the crystallization of calcium oxalate and especially in the aggregation stage.
