RESUMO

Trial design: This is a prospective, block-randomized, blinded, multiple arm and parallel-group superiority clinical trial. Methods: Seventy-eight patients satisfying the recruitment standards, were randomly allocated into three groups as follows: Group I (n = 26) - Inferior alveolar nerve block (IANB) devoid of aromatherapy (AT); Group II (n = 26) - IANB with lavender AT and Group III - IANB with rose AT (n = 26) with the help of the ultrasonic aroma diffuser (with respective oils)for 20 min/2 h in operatories 1,2 and 3 respectively. For AT, 3-4 drops of lavender and rose-conditioned oils were added from a 100 ml solution containing 100 mg of these medicinal plants. The pre-operative (PRO) and access opening (AO) pain as well as the anxiety of patients were recorded using the Visual Analog Scale (VAS) and Modified Dental Anxiety Scale (MDAS) respectively. Data thus obtained was entered into the Excel sheet and subjected to statistical tests (analysis of variance and paired t-test). The p-value less than 0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: Group I showed non-significant disparity between PRO and AO for both VAS as well as MDAS (p = 0.62, p = 0.71). However, group II (p = 0.04, p = 0.02) and group III (p = 0.03, p = 0.01) revealed significant differences between PO - AO VAS and MDAS. MDAS and VAS intergroup comparison revealed a significant difference among groups I and II (p = 0.03, p = 0.04), and groups I and III (p = 0.02, p = 0.03). However non-significant disparity was observed among groups II and III (p = 0.85, 0.34). Moreover, there was a statistically significant reduction in anxiety levels in females compared to males after rose AT (p = 0.02). Nevertheless, groups I and II did not show any gender predilection for anxiety as well as pain. Conclusion: Alleviation of dental anxiety as well as reduction in pain during AO of teeth with SIP can be achieved using Lavender and rose AT. In female patients, rose AT can be preferred over lavender AT.

RESUMO

Both of neurological emergencies and hyperglycemia are independently associated risk factors of mortality in the ICU patients. In critically ills, hyperglycemia is secondary to already existing DM or stress-induced hyperglycemia (SIH). Admission glycemic gap (AGG) is considered as a reliable indicator of SIH. This study aimed to explore the association of AGG on diabetic neuro-critical patients' short-term mortality, and understand the potential of AGG as the predictor of outcome. Sixty adult diabetic neuro-critical patients admitted in ICU and stayed at least for 24 hours, were prospectively observed for 30 days, or until discharge or death, whichever came first. The patients' initial clinical assessment and HbA1c, CBC, ABG, and blood glucose level were done within 24 hours of admission. A1c derived admission glucose (ADAG) was calculated as, ADAG = (1.59 × HbA1c) - 2.59 (mmol/L). The AGG was calculated by subtracting ADAG from admission blood glucose level (ABGL). Death or survival of 30 days was our primary outcome and participants were divided between survivor or non-survivor groups according to primary outcome. Statistical comparisons of the study variables between the groups were performed and the relationship between parameters derived from blood glucose and mortality was prospected. Among the 60 patients enrolled, 35(58.3%) were non-survivors and 25(41.7%) were survivors. Age, sex, residence, primary diagnosis, co-morbidity, or drug history had no association with survival/non-survival. Among the initial clinical assessment parameters, lower GCS had significant association with non-survival. AGG, HbA1c, ADAG and ABGL were significantly different between the groups, with higher values in the non-survivors. Lower GCS, and higher AGG, HbA1c, ADAG and ABGL showed significant odds of non-survival. The highest odds of non- survival was for AGG (OR 2.95, 95% CI: 1.83-4.75; p<0.001). For ABGL and HbA1c the OR were 2.03 (95% CI: 1.44-2.86; p<0.001) and 1.93 (95% CI: 1.04-3.58; p<0.04) respectively. The final adjusted odds (aOR) of non-survival for higher AGG was 3.25 (95% CI: 1.71-6.16; p<0.001), signifying that AGG is independently associated with non-survival. AGG, GCS level, ABGL, HbA1c level, and ADAG can predict short-term outcome (mortality). However, AGG has the greatest potential to predict short-term outcome in diabetic neuro-critical patients.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Dental education is considered as a complex, challenging and often stressful educational procedure. Acquisition of psychomotor skills by undergraduate students is an important step in many health professions to become a successful professional. During under graduation, class II cavity preparation exercise is of utmost important in dentistry. OBJECTIVE: To compare class II cavities prepared by students after hands-on live demonstration and pre-recorded video demonstration using well-organised evaluation rubrics. METHOD: Preclinical dental students (n= 50) were divided into two groups. The students in group I (n= 25) attended a hands-on live demonstration performed by one faculty while students in group II (n= 25) watched a 15-minute pre-recorded procedural video on the projector. Both groups were appealed to prepare class II cavity for amalgam involving disto-occlusal surface of mandibular second molar articulated on jaw model (TRU LON study model, Jayna industries, Ghaziabad U.P., India). Following completion of the preparations, all teeth were collected, and labelled grades of prepared cavities were given according to prespecified rubrics. The data of scores were presented as means and standard deviation. Statistical analysis of data was executed using SPSS software. A paired t-test was used to compare scores between groups. RESULTS: The study shows that the video-supported demonstration of a cavity preparation was better than the live hands-on demonstration. A higher mean response for the procedural video group was found compared to the live demonstration group (p= 0.000133). CONCLUSION: Pre-recorded video-supported demonstration along with guidance by a tutor may be a viable alternative to hands-on live demonstration in cavity preparation procedures during undergraduate dental training. Moreover, rubric methods can be implemented in the teaching of various preclinical exercises for conservative dentistry and endodontics.

RESUMO

This Systematic Review (SR) was to report on the prevalence of pulp stones in the Saudi Arabian (KSA) population. The electronic databases were searched for scientific research articles during May 2021. The data search was performed in electronic search engines like PubMed, Scopus, Web of science, and Saudi Digital Library, and 6 original research articles which fulfilled the eligibility criteria were assessed for qualitative data. The prevalence of pulp stones among the KSA population ranged from 4.6% to 50.93% among the study participants and it ranged between 10.2%-13.34% in the teeth assessed. The pulp stones were more frequently reported in decayed teeth, periodontal diseases, attrition, teeth with dental restorations, and higher in the molar teeth in comparison with the premolar teeth. The data on the prevalence of pulp stones among the Saudi population will be helpful for clinicians in planning endodontic procedures.

RESUMO

When healthy women undergo caesarean section (CS) under sub arachnoid anaesthesia, transient electrocardiographic changes, such as ST-segment depression and T-wave abnormalities, are observed. During an elective caesarean section under sub arachnoid anaesthesia, about one-third of healthy parturient experience chest pain and ECG changes suggestive of myocardial ischemia. To assess the ST-segment and Rate Pressure Product changes with chest pain in patients with elective caesarean section under subarachnoid block. The Department of Anesthesia, Analgesia and Intensive Care Medicine at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU), Bangladesh was the site of this prospective observational study. The study included 86 healthy women between the ages of 20 and 35 who needed an elective caesarean section under a single shot sub arachnoid block and who visited the Department of Anesthesia, Analgesia, and Intensive Care Medicine at BSMMU in Shahbagh, Dhaka from January 2019 to June 2019. In comparison to the no chest pain group, ST-segment changes among the chest pain group at delivery, 5 minute, 10 minute after delivery and at the end of the surgery were highly significant (p=0.001). Comparatively, Rate Pressure Product changes were found to be significantly higher in the group with chest pain than in the group without chest pain (p=0.001). It is concluded that there is a substantial association of chest pain with rate pressure product and ST-segment changes after subarachroid block in caesarean section.

RESUMO

Global distribution of salt-affected soils (SAS) has remained at about 1 billion hectares in the literature over the years despite changes in climate, sea levels, and land use patterns which influence the distribution. Lack of periodic update of input soil data, data gaps, and inconsistency are part of the reasons for constant SAS distribution in the literature. This paper proposes harmonization as a suitable alternative for managing inconsistent data and minimizing data gaps. It developed a new harmonization service for supporting country-driven global SAS information update. The service contains a global library of harmonization models for harmonizing inconsistent soil data. It also contains models for identifying gaps in SAS database and for showing global distribution where harmonization of available data is needed. The service can be used by countries to develop national SAS information and update global SAS distribution. Its data availability index is useful in identifying countries without SAS data in the global database, which is a convenient way to identify countries to mobilize when updating global SAS information. Its application in 27 countries showed that the countries have more SAS data than they currently share with the global databases and that most of their data require SAS harmonization.

RESUMO

Oxidative stress is a physiological condition that occurs when there is an imbalance between the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and the cell's antioxidant defense system. ROS are highly reactive molecules that can cause damage to cellular structures such as DNA, proteins, and lipids. the regulation of ROS levels and the antioxidant defense system is crucial for cancer prevention and treatment. Strategies to enhance antioxidant defenses or induce oxidative stress selectively in cancer cells are being developed as potential therapeutic approaches. targeting oxidative stress in cancer treatment is an active area of research with several potential therapeutic approaches being investigated. Developing selective and effective therapies that target oxidative stress in cancer cells while sparing normal cells will be crucial for improving cancer treatment outcomes.

RESUMO

When performing infra-umbilical procedures, caudal epidural analgesia with bupivacaine is frequently used to provide both intra- and post-operative analgesia. Dexmedetomidine, an alpha 2 agonistsare extensively used in neuraxial blocks and peripheral nerve blocks to prolong the action of bupivacaine. To find out the effects of dexmedetomidine as an adjuvant to bupivacaine for caudal analgesia in children undergoing infra-umbilical surgery. This was a randomized, controlled double-blinded prospective observational study and was performed from July 2019 to December 2019. A total of 60 (Sixty) patients with different infra-umbilical surgical problems underwent different procedure under caudal anaesthesia in different operation theatre in Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University, Dhaka were enrolled in this study. Elaborate personal history, meticulous clinical examinations and relevant laboratory investigations was done. Post-operative adverse effects also were monitored. All information from history of illness, clinical, laboratory findings, duration of analgesia and post-operative adverse effects were recorded in a preformed data sheet (Appendix-I) and statistical analysis was done by SPSS 22.0. Mean age of the children in Group A (dexmedetomidine + bupivacaine) was 5.50±2.61 years and in Group B (bupivacaine) was 5.66±2.75. Mean weight of the children in Group A was 19.22±8.58 kg and in Group B was 19.70±8.94 kg in this study. Mean duration of anaesthesia was 27.5±6.5 minute in Group A and 28.5±5.5 minute in Group B. The mean duration of analgesia was 4.32±0.54 hours for Group A and 2.12±0.32 hours in Group B. In Group A, 46.7% patients required 1 and 3.3% required 2 rescue analgesic but in Group B, 43.3% patients required single rescue analgesic and 33.3% required two rescue analgesics (p<0.05). In Group A, 6.7% patients had nausea/ vomiting and in Group B, 16.7% patients had nausea/ vomiting (p>0.05). It can be concluded that dexmedetomidine with bupivacaine for caudal analgesia in infra-umbilical surgery significantly prolongs the duration of postoperative analgesia when compared to bupivacaine alone without any side-effects.

RESUMO

Burns have placed a devastating burden on public health because of leading to an increased risk of infection. Therefore, the development of an effective antibacterial dressing for wound healing is essential. The present work is mainly based on the fabrication of biodegradable polycaprolactone (PCL) films through a simple and cheap process of polymer casting using a novel combination of hydroxyapatite (HAP), cuprous oxide (Cu2O) NPs and graphene oxide (GO) nanosheets which have a great effect in preventing colonization and to modify the wound dreasing. The compositions played a key role in decreasing the contact angle of PCL from 47.02° to 11.53°. Further, the cell viability exhibited a viable cell ratio of 81.2% after 3 days of culturing. Moreover, the highest antibacterial activity was obtained from the film of Cu2O@PCl and showed high impact results in antibacterial behavior.

RESUMO

Failed Tracheal Intubation with Subsequent inability to maintain an open airway and adequate oxygenation is the most frequent cause of brain damage or death during anesthesia. Recognizing before anesthesia the potential for difficult intubation allows time for optimal preparation. Proper Selection of equipment and techniques is needed to avoid unwanted situation. To find out difficulties associated with endotracheal intubation using Modified Mallampati Test (MMT) combined with Thyromental Height Test (TMHT) and MMT without TMHT. This prospective observational study was conducted at the Department of Anesthesia in Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU), Dhaka, Bangladesh from April 2018 to September 2018. Two hundred two patients with different surgical procedures under general anaesthesia in different operation theaters of BSMMU, Dhaka were selected as study population. After taking written consents from each patient or his/her attendant elaborate history of illness, meticulous clinical examinations were performed and relevant laboratory investigations were done. All information was recorded in a preformed data sheet and statistical analysis was done by SPSS-22.0. Mean age ±SD of the study subjects was 42.49±14.29 years in MMT with TMHT group and 43.40±15.39 years in MMT without TMHT group. Females were enrolled more than males in both the groups. BMI was 28.75±3.59kg/m² in MMT with TMHT group and 29.44±8.64kg/m² in MMT without TMHT group. There were no significant differences in age, gender and BMI between the groups. Sensitivity, specificity, PPV, NPV and accuracy were 100.0%, 96.0%, 96.2%, 100.0% and 98.0% respectively of MMT with TMHT in predicting intubation difficulty. Sensitivity, specificity, PPV, NPV and accuracy were 100.0%, 96.0%, 96.2%, 100.0% and 98.0% respectively of MMT only in predicting intubation difficulty. MMT combined with TMHT is a better predictor of intubation difficulty than MMT alone.

RESUMO

Background: Obesity is a significant public health problem that is characterized by an increase in oxidative stress and enhanced inflammatory responses associated with immune cell invasion of adipose tissues. This study assessed several biochemical abnormalities, apoptosis, oxidative stress status, and associated histological changes in the liver, duodenum, and heart brought on by high-fat diet-induced obesity in rats. It also assessed the mechanistic benefits of curcumin in reversing these inflammatory, metabolic, and histological impairments. Methods: Rats were assigned into three groups each including ten rats: the control group (CD), the high-fat diet group (HFD), and the high-fat diet + curcumin (HFDC) group. Serum glucose, insulin, and triglycerides (TAGs) were observed. In addition, apoptosis (indicated by hepatic DNA fragmentation) and oxidative stress status (indicated by hepatic MPO, GSH, and SOD) were assessed. Histopathological examinations included the GIT (liver and duodenum) and heart in addition to quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) assays of the adipose tissue genetic expressions for inflammatory signaling pathways (TLR4, IL-6, and TNF-α). Results: The overall findings showed that the HFD group exhibited significantly higher levels of glucose, TAGs, and insulin than the control group (P < 0.01). The histological abnormalities of the studied organs in the HFD group were paralleled by these biochemical abnormalities, which were strongly associated with increased apoptosis, increased oxidative stress, and increased expression of the inflammatory signaling markers. There were significant improvements in the HFDC group in terms of biochemical, inflammatory, and histological investigations. Conclusions: This study's findings concluded that obesity is significantly associated with biochemical and microscopic alterations in many organs. Curcumin exerted potent antitoxic, antioxidant, tissue-protective, and antiobesity effects. Curcumin is recommended to be added to various dietary regimens to prevent or delay the organs' dysfunction among obese people.

RESUMO

AIM: The aim of the current in vitro research was to evaluate the sealing capacity of three different agents employed for the repair of perforations at the furcation area. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Recently 60 extracted human mandibular permanent molars having well apart plus fully formed roots, and intact furcation were chosen. The 60 samples were allocated at random to three groups of 20 samples: Group I: Furcation perforation repair by means of mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA)-Angelus, Group II: Furcal perforation repair using Biodentine, Group III: Furcal perforation repair by EndoSequence. The specimens were subjected to sectioning with a hard tissue microtome and the sectioned parts of the samples were then examined. The specimens were subjected to gold sputtering and visualizing beneath scanning electron microscope (SEM) at 2000× magnification for assessing the sealing capacity of the agents. RESULTS: The highest sealing capacity was noted with the use of Biodentine at 0.96 ± 0.10, in pursuit by EndoSequence use at 1.18 ± 0.14 and MTA-Angelus use at 1.74 ± 0.08. The disparity amid the three groups was statistically significant with p < 0.001. CONCLUSION: In conclusion, it may be inferred that Biodentine exhibited the finest sealing capacity than EndoSequence and MTA- Angelus. It may thus be given consideration as a substance of preference for the repair of furcal perforation. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Using biologically compatible substances may be suggested to amend perforations thereby decreasing the occurrence of inflammatory response in the neighboring tissues. The sealing capacity is a significant feature in supporting the result of a root canal treatment of a tooth.

RESUMO

Au@Se core-shell nanoparticles were obtained via laser ablation technique to be incorporated into polycaprolactone (PCL) nanofibrous scaffolds for wound healing applications at different contributions of Se nanoparticles (SeNPs). The synthesized layers were inspected via X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Fourier transformed infrared (FTIR). Additionally, microstructural and surface morphology were followed with different SeNPs contributions before and after fibroblast culturing. Moreover, Selenium dopant is affected Maximum roughness valley depth while it starts from 0.31 µm at Au@0.0Se@PCL reaching 0.457 µm at Au@12Se@PCL; however, after culturing starts from 0.3833 µm reaching 0.41 µm. Besides, the antibacterial activity was screened, showing the absence of inhibition zones in free selenium composition; however, it grows up reaching 8.3 ±â€¯0.8, and 8.0 ±â€¯0.8 for E. coli and S. aureus, respectively at the maximum contribution of selenium. SeNPs contributed composites show higher cell viability than Selenium free composite that it reaches its max in Au@8.0Se@PCL, recording 95.3 ±â€¯2.3%. Composites show an excellent Wound dressing capability that its performance is directly proportional to selenium content. This significant enrichment of antibacterial activity and cell viability could recommend these composites for additional research in medical applications.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The Schistosomiasis Consortium for Operational Research and Evaluation (SCORE) coordinated a five-year study implemented in several countries, including Niger, to provide an evidence-base for programmatic decisions regarding cost-effective approaches to preventive chemotherapy for schistosomiasis control. METHODS: This was a cluster-randomised trial investigating six possible combinations of annual or biannual community-wide treatment (CWT), school-based treatment (SBT), and holidays from mass treatment over four years. The most intense arm involved two years of annual CWT followed by 2 years of biannual CWT, while the least intensive arm involved one year of annual SBT followed by a year without treatment and two more years of annual SBT. The primary outcome of interest was prevalence and intensity of Schistosoma haematobium among 100 children aged 9-12 years sampled each year. In addition, 100 children aged 5-8 years in their first year of school and 50 adults (aged 20-55 years) were tested in the first and final fifth year of the study. RESULTS: In total, data were collected from 167,500 individuals across 225 villages in nine districts within the Niger River valley, Western Niger. Overall, the prevalence of S. haematobium decreased from baseline to Year 5 across all study arms. The relative reduction of prevalence was greater in biannual compared with annual treatment across all arms; however, the only significant difference was seen in areas with a high starting prevalence. Although adults were not targeted for treatment in SBT arms, a statistically significant decrease in prevalence among adults was seen in moderate prevalence areas receiving biannual (10.7% to 4.8%) SBT (P < 0.001). Adults tested in the annual SBT group also showed a decrease in prevalence between Year 1 and Year 5 (12.2% to 11.0%), but this difference was not significant. CONCLUSIONS: These findings are an important consideration for schistosomiasis control programmes that are considering elimination and support the idea that scaling up the frequency of treatment rounds, particularly in areas of low prevalence, will not eliminate schistosomiasis. Interestingly, the finding that prevalence decreased among adults in SBT arms suggests that transmission in the community can be reduced, even where only school children are being treated, which could have logistical and cost-saving implications for the national control programmes.

RESUMO

We continue the development of the in-house molecular dynamics software package SpaCIAL and test it for the computation of the collision-induced absorption coefficients for a neon (Ne) and krypton (Kr) gas mixture. An apodization procedure for the dipole autocorrelation function is implemented and tested. We also carry out a statistical study of the convergence rate with respect to ensemble size. The resulting absorption coefficients show a good accordance with quantum mechanical results. Comparison with laboratory measurements shows agreement within 10%-20% at T = 295 K. At T = 480 K, a larger difference of 40%-80% is observed, which can presumably be explained by experimental uncertainties. For the study, an empirical (Barker, Fisher, and Watts) interaction-potential [Mol. Phys. 21, 657 (1971)] for Ne-Kr has been developed. Ab initio {coupled cluster with singles and doubles (triples) [CCSD(T)]} potentials for Ne-Ne, Kr-Kr, and Ne-Kr have been computed, as well as the CCSD(T) interaction-induced Ne-Kr dipole moment curve.

RESUMO

Polymer nanocomposites have been synthesized by the covalent addition of bromide-functionalized graphene (Graphene-Br) through the single electron transfer-living radical polymerization technique (SET-LRP). Graphite functionalized with bromide for the first time via an efficient route using mild reagents has been designed to develop a graphene based radical initiator. The efficiency of sacrificial initiator (ethyl α-bromoisobutyrate) has also been compared with a graphene based initiator towards monitoring their Cu(0) mediated controlled molecular weight and morphological structures through mass spectroscopy (MOLDI-TOF) and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) analysis, respectively. The enhancement in thermal stability is observed for graphene-grafted-poly(methyl methacrylate) (G-g-PMMA) at 392 °C, which may be due to the influence ofthe covalent addition of graphene, whereas the sacrificial initiator used to synthesize G-graft-PMMA (S) has low thermal stability as analyzed by TGA. A significant difference is noticed on their glass transition and melting temperatures by DSC. The controlled formation and structural features of the polymer-functionalized-graphene is characterized by Raman, FT-IR, UV-Vis spectroscopy, NMR, and zeta potential measurements. The wettability measurements of the novel G-graft-PMMA on leather surface were found to be better in hydrophobic nature with a water contact angle of 109 ± 1°.

RESUMO

We have implemented a scheme for classical molecular dynamics simulations of collision-induced absorption. The program has been applied to a gas mixture of argon (Ar) and krypton (Kr). The simulations are compared with accurate quantum dynamical calculations. The comparisons of the absorption coefficients show that classical molecular dynamics is correct within 10% for photon wave numbers up to 220 cm-1 at a temperature of 200 K for this system. At higher temperatures, the agreement is even better. Molecular dynamics accounts for many-body interactions, which, for example, give rise to continuous dimer formation and destruction in the gas. In this way, the method has an advantage compared with bimolecular classical (trajectory) treatments. The calculations are carried out with a new empirical Ar-Kr pair potential. This has been obtained through extensive analysis of experimental thermophysical and transport properties. We also present a new high level ab initio Ar-Kr potential curve for comparison, as well as ab initio interaction-induced dipole curves computed with different methods. In addition, the Ar-Kr polarizability and hyperpolarizability are reported. A comparison of the computed absorption spectra with an experiment taken at 300 K shows satisfactory agreement although a difference in absolute magnitude of 10%-15% persists. This discrepancy we attribute mainly to experimental uncertainty.

RESUMO

The importance of networking for the management of acute coronary syndrome (ACS) has been emphasised in the 2012 guidelines by the European Society of Cardiology (ESC) on ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI). In Penang, the ACS referral network has the Penang General Hospital (PGH), a percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI)- capable hospital, with 14 other hospitals referring their patients for PCI to PGH on a daily basis. In one of its review regarding the referral methodology in the network, PGH's Cardiology centre observed gaps in the referral systems, which was leading to poor quality of referrals. To address these issues, the PGH Cardiology centre developed a standardised protocol and conducted a one-day workshop to educate medical officers about the standardised protocol. This commentary piece is a proof of this concept, and aims to share the experience and provide an overview on the initiatives by the PGH, which has resulted in improved quality of PCI referrals.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Gingival biotype (GB) is a crucial factor in predicting the success of soft tissue periodontal and peri-implant surgical interventions. Consequently, contemplating noninvasive, less time-consuming procedure to anticipate it has become a part and parcel of the current practice. This article presents a novel algorithm to detect GB in the Saudi population based on the dentopapillary measurements taken on laboratory models. In addition, it targets to allocate a range of values for thick and thin biotypes. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Model analysis was done on 160 patients to measure eight gingival parameters, and an algorithm was developed according to the results of multiple and linear regression analyses. Applying the dentopapillary parameters to the algorithm revealed a prediction of the biotype. Finally, the resultant values and the exact thickness were reassessed directly in a sample of patients using a modified caliper. RESULTS: The regression analysis revealed an algorithm predicting biotypes among patients based on their measured dentopapillary values. Discriminant analysis was used to allocate the values to thin and thick biotypes to further demystify that they coincide with <0.7 mm and >1.5 mm, respectively. However, gingival thickness between 0.7 and 1.5 mm was considered intermediate biotype. CONCLUSION: GB could be predicted based on the dentopapillary measurements taken on laboratory models, which may further reduce the chairside time and increase the success rate of the surgical procedures. Significant variations in the range of values of the thick and thin biotype were detected in the Saudi population compared to other races. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: The escalating invasion of interventional procedures in the dental practice necessitates measuring the GB as a predictor of procedure success. This study introduces an algorithm for detecting the GB and updates the range of values for thick and thin biotypes in the Saudi population that would consequently reduce chairside time.
