RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The immune system is critical in fighting cancer, so is it possible that the natural stimulation of this system can slow down or stop the evolution of cancer? Our in vivo study aimed to evaluate the protective effect of the combination of five types of immunostimulants, which are Beta-glucan and Arabinogalactan as polysaccharides and three mushroom extracts (Reishi, Maitake, and Shiitake), on 7,12-Dimethyl Benz[a]anthracene (DMBA)/ Croton oil-induced papilloma in Swiss albino mice. METHODOLOGY: We used blood count analyses to estimate broadly the immunological reaction and biochemical techniques to determine the oxidative stress variations in the enzymatic activity of Superoxide dismutase (SOD), Catalase (CAT), and Glutathion peroxidase (GPx), which could have a preventive function against cancer development. RESULTS: The cutaneous application of the DMBA/Croton oil caused precancerous hyperplasia in squamous cells (papilloma) on the back of the mice. Tumor development was accompanied by a decrease in SOD and GPx activities. The treatment with the immunostimulants led to the total disappearance of the incidence of skin papillomas and also showed a nearly back to normal SOD activity but not CAT and GPx activities. The increase in the level of immune cells (lymphocytes, monocytes, and white blood cells) reflected a clear enhancement of the immune system activity. DISCUSSION: The healthy epidermis observed with treated mice simultaneously subjected to the cancerogenosis protocol suggests the inhibition of spinous cell proliferation leading to the total suppression of the hyperplasia. Moreover, the increase in the level of immune cells in this batch reflects an inflammatory reaction. Indeed, previous studies reported that immunostimulants, including Betaglucan involve a release of some inflammatory mediators who would be at the origin of its anticancer activity. Cancerogenesis has clearly disrupted the activities of the antioxidant enzymes, but the relationship between the two process is often complex. Bibliographic data led us to suggest that low catalytic activities of CAT and GPx observed in treated mice simultaneously subjected to the cancerogenesis protocol, would have induce an accumulation of H2O2 which has often been described as an inducer of cancer cells apoptosis. CONCLUSION: Immunostimulants used in our study could have an effective protective effect against skin carcinogenesis via the enhancement of the global function of the immune system and modulation of the antioxidant defense. RESUMO

We demonstrate the feasibility of resetting and reusing dosimeters exploiting the measurement of the infrared radiation-induced attenuation (IR-RIA) in phosphosilicate optical fibers (OFs) to provide point or distributed dose measurements in radiation environments. To bleach the room temperature stable IR-RIA, we used the photobleaching (PB) phenomenon. The PB efficiency was evaluated for different wavelengths in the [400-1100] nm range. The best identified PB resetting condition consists in using a continuous-wave Argon-ion laser at 514 nm. This treatment successfully bleached ∼97% of the IR-RIA at 1550 nm of a 30 m-long P-doped single mode optical fiber X-ray irradiated at a dose of 100 Gy. Successive re-irradiations of the same OF sample, regenerated after each run, confirm that the dosimeter keeps the same calibration curve during the whole process.

RESUMO

The aim of this study is to compare histological patterns and to estimate the burden of thyroid cancers in the two Wilayahs (departments) of El-Taref and Guelma in northeast of Algeria (total population 0.9 million), locally reputed as having different rates of endemic thyroid diseases and cancer. A retrospective analysis of central pathology registers and clinical records of patients with thyroid diseases, covering the period 2008-2012, was conducted. A total of 145 cases of thyroid cancers with histological confirmation were registered in the two Wilayahs during the period, with a female to male ratio of 5.9 : 1. Estimates of crude incidence rates suggested that thyroid cancers were twice as frequent in the Wilayah of Guelma compared to El-Taref (p < 0.05) with a tendency to occur at a younger age in resident of the Wilayah of El-Taref. Diagnoses of thyroid adenoma were more frequent in the Wilayah of Guelma, whereas the prevalence of other thyroid lesions, including goitre, was similar in the two Wilayahs. This first descriptive study on geographic variations in thyroid cancer in Northern Africa suggests that significant differences may occur in relation with environmental and lifestyle exposures.

RESUMO

Microcystins (MCs) produced from cyanobacteria can accumulate in freshwater fish tissues. In this study, variations in these toxins content were examined monthly in water samples and two species of fish in Lake Oubeira, Algeria, from April 2010 to March 2011. During the study period, MCs were analyzed using protein phosphatase type 2A (PP2A) inhibition assay. In lake water, total (dissolved and intracellular toxins) MC concentrations by PP2A ranged from 0.028 to 13.4 µg equivalent MC-LR/l, with a peak in September 2010. MC-LR was the dominant variant (90 % of the total) in water samples, followed by MC-YR and MC-(H4)YR. The highest MC concentration in the omnivorous common carp (Cyprinus carpio) was found in the order intestine > hepatopancreas > muscle; however, in the carnivorous European eel (Anguilla anguilla) the order was liver > intestine > muscle. Highest MC concentrations in the intestine tissue of the common carp were found between August and November 2010 where high MC concentrations were detected in water samples, whereas high levels of MCs in the liver of the European eel were found later between January and February 2011. During the entire period of study, the World Health Organization (WHO) lifetime limit for tolerable daily intake was exceeded only in common carp muscle.

RESUMO

MICROMEGAS detectors have been developed for the detection and tracking of charged and neutral particles. The control parameters of MICROMEGAS include materials, the type of gases, the mixing ratio of gases and the geometry. Simulations of MICROMEGAS are conducted to optimize the characteristics and performance with respect to the nature of the gas mixture, applied voltages of drift and amplification regions. Quantities such as the equi-potential lines, electron drift lines, and avalanche process of electrons and ions are calculated. Two MICROMEGAS detectors are built and characterized by using standard X-ray sources. The voltage gains are measured against the applied voltage range for different gas pressures and are compared with our simulation results.
