RESUMO

Spin correlations of the frustrated pyrochlore oxide Tb2+x Ti2-x O7+y have been investigated by using inelastic neutron scattering on single-crystalline samples (x = -0.007, 0.000, and 0.003), which have the putative quantum-spin-liquid (QSL) or electric-quadrupolar ground states. Spin correlations, which are notably observed in nominally elastic scattering, show short-range correlations around L points [ q = ( 1 2 , 1 2 , 1 2 ) ] , tiny antiferromagnetic Bragg scattering at L and Γ points, and pinch-point-type structures around Γ points. The short-range spin correlations were analyzed using a random-phase approximation (RPA) assuming the paramagnetic state and two-spin interactions among Ising spins. These analyses have shown that the RPA scattering intensity well reproduces the experimental data using temperature- and x-dependent coupling constants of up to tenth-neighbor site pairs. This suggests that no symmetry breaking occurs in the QSL sample and that a quantum treatment beyond the semiclassical RPA approach is required. Implications of the experimental data and the RPA analyses are discussed.

RESUMO

Neutron scattering experiments on a polycrystalline sample of the frustrated pyrochlore magnet Tb(2)Ti(2)O(7), which does not show any magnetic order down to 50 mK, have revealed that it shows condensation behavior below 0.4 K from a thermally fluctuating paramagnetic state to a spin-liquid ground state with quantum spin fluctuations. Energy spectra change from quasielastic scattering to a continuum with a double-peak structure at energies of 0 and 0.8 K in the spin-liquid state. Specific heat shows an anomaly at the crossover temperature.

RESUMO

Quantum-critical behavior of the itinerant electron antiferromagnet (V0.9Ti0.1)2O3 has been studied by single-crystal neutron scattering. By directly observing antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations in the paramagnetic phase, we have shown that the characteristic energy depends on temperature as c1 +c2T3/2, where c1 and c2 are constants. This T3/2 dependence demonstrates that the present strongly correlated d-electron antiferromagnet clearly shows the criticality of the spin-density-wave quantum phase transition in three space dimensions.

RESUMO

It is known that at low temperature, water inside single-wall carbon nanotubes (water-SWNTs) undergoes a structural transition to form tube-like solid structures. The resulting ice NTs are hollow cylinders with diameters comparable to those of typical gas molecules. Hence, the gas-adsorption properties of ice- and water-SWNTs are of interest. Here, we carry out the first systematic investigation into the stability of water-SWNTs in various gas atmospheres below 0.1 MPa by means of electrical resistance, X-ray diffraction, NMR measurements and molecular dynamics calculations. It is found that the resistivity of water-SWNTs exhibits a significant increase in gas atmospheres below a critical temperature Tc, at which a particular type of atmospheric gas molecule enters the SWNTs in an on-off fashion. On the basis of this phenomenon, it is proposed that water-SWNTs can be used to fabricate a new type of molecular nanovalve.

RESUMO

A quantum critical point of the heavy fermion Ce(Ru(1-x)Rh(x))2Si2, (x = 0,0.03) has been studied by single-crystalline neutron scattering. By accurately measuring the dynamical susceptibility at the antiferromagnetic wave vector k3 = 0.35c*, we have shown that the inverse energy width gamma(k3), i.e., the inverse correlation time, depends on temperature as gamma(k3) = c1 + c2T((3/2)+/-0.1), where c1 and c2 are x dependent constants, in a low temperature range. This critical exponent 3/2 +/- 0.1 proves that the quantum critical point is controlled by that of the itinerant antiferromagnet.

RESUMO

Spin fluctuations of the archetypal heavy fermion compound CeRu2Si2 have been investigated by neutron scattering in an entire irreducible Brillouin zone. The dynamical susceptibility is remarkably well described by the self-consistent renormalization (SCR) theory of the spin fluctuation in a phenomenological way, proving the effectiveness of the theory. The present analysis using the SCR phenomenology has allowed us to determine 14 exchange constants, which show the long-range nature of the Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida interaction.
