RESUMO

Heteroatom-doped nanoporous carbon materials with unique hierarchical structures have been shown to be promising supports and catalysts for energy conversion; however, hard-template methods are limited by their inflexibility and time-consuming process. Soft-template methods have been suggested as an alternative, but they are limited by their picky requirements for stable reactions and the few known precursors for small-batch synthesis. In this study, a gram-scale soft-template-based silica-assisted method was investigated for producing nitrogen-doped hollow nanoporous carbon spheres (N-HNCS). Nitrogen doping is accomplished during preparation with enhanced electrocatalytic activity without complicating the methodology. To investigate the effect of the unique structural characteristics of N-HNCS (specific surface area: 1250 m2 g-1; pore volume: 1.2 cm3 g-1), cobalt was introduced as an active center for the oxygen reduction reaction. Finely tuned reaction conditions resulted in well-dispersed cobalt particles with minimal agglomeration. This sheds light on the advancement of new experimental procedures for developing more active and promising non-noble catalysts in large and stable batches.

Mice exposed in gestation to maternal high-fat/high-sucrose (HF/HS) diet develop altered bile acid (BA) homeostasis. We hypothesized that these reflect an altered microbiome and asked if microbiota transplanted from HF/HS offspring change hepatic BA and lipid metabolism to determine the directionality of effect. Female mice were fed HF/HS or chow (CON) for 6 wk and bred with lean males. 16S sequencing was performed to compare taxa in offspring. Cecal microbiome transplantation (CMT) was performed from HF/HS or CON offspring into antibiotic-treated mice fed chow or high fructose. BA, lipid metabolic, and gene expression analyses were performed in recipient mice. Gut microbiomes from HF/HS offspring segregated from CON offspring, with increased Firmicutes to Bacteriodetes ratios and Verrucomicrobial abundance. After CMT was performed, HF/HS-recipient mice had larger BA pools, increased intrahepatic muricholic acid, and decreased deoxycholic acid species. HF/HS-recipient mice exhibited downregulated hepatic Mrp2, increased hepatic Oatp1b2, and decreased ileal Asbt mRNA expression. HF/HS-recipient mice exhibited decreased cecal butyrate and increased hepatic expression of Il6. HF/HS-recipient mice had larger livers and increased intrahepatic triglyceride versus CON-recipient mice after fructose feeding, with increased hepatic mRNA expression of lipogenic genes including Srebf1, Fabp1, Mogat1, and Mogat2. CMT from HF/HS offspring increased BA pool and shifted the composition of the intrahepatic BA pool. CMT from HF/HS donor offspring increased fructose-induced liver triglyceride accumulation. These findings support a causal role for vertical transfer of an altered microbiome in hepatic BA and lipid metabolism in HF/HS offspring.NEW & NOTEWORTHY We utilized a mouse model of maternal obesogenic diet exposure to evaluate the effect on offspring microbiome and bile acid homeostasis. We identified shifts in the offspring microbiome associated with changes in cecal bile acid levels. Transfer of the microbiome from maternal obesogenic diet-exposed offspring to microbiome-depleted mice altered bile acid homeostasis and increased fructose-induced hepatic steatosis.

The morphology of conjugated polymer thin films, determined by the kinetics of film drying, is closely correlated with their electrical properties. Herein, we focused on dramatic changes in the thin-film morphology of blade-coated poly{[N,N'-bis(2-octyldodecyl)-naphthalene-1,4,5,8-bis(dicarboximide)-2,6-diyl]-alt-5,5'-(2,2'-bithiophene)} caused by the effect of solvent and coating temperature. Through in situ measurements, the evolution of polymer aggregates and crystallites, which plays a decisive role in the formation of the charge-transport pathway, was observed in real time. By combining in situ ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy and in situ grazing-incidence wide-angle X-ray scattering analysis, we could identify five distinct stages during the blade-coating process; these stages were observed irrespective of the solvent and coating temperature used. The five stages are described in detail with a proposed model of film formation. This insight is an important step in understanding the relationship between the morphology of thin polymer films and their charge-transport properties as well as in optimizing the structural evolution of thin films.

Clustered occurrences of ankylosing spondylitis (AS) in family have been noticed. We evaluated patients with AS confirmed by the modified New York criteria for familial history of AS (one or more first to third degree relatives). The clinical characteristics and the recurrence risks (number of AS patients/number of familial members) of the familial AS compared to sporadic AS were investigated. Out of a total of 204 AS patients, 38 patients (18.6%) reported that they had a familial history of AS. The recurrence risks in the familial AS patients for first, second and third degree family members were 14.5%, 5.2%, and 4.4% respectively. Erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) (22.6 ± 22.2 vs 35.4 ± 34.4, P=0.029) and C-reactive protein (CRP) (1.24 ± 1.7 vs 2.43 ± 3.3, P=0.003) at diagnosis, body mass index (21.9 ± 2.7 vs 23.7 ± 3.3, P=0.002) and frequency of oligoarthritis (13.2% vs 33.7%, P=0.021) were significantly lower in the familial form. The presence of HLA-B27 (97.4% vs 83.1%, P=0.044) was significantly higher in familial AS. In conclusion, Korean familial AS patients show a lower frequency of oligoarthritis, lower BMI, lower ESR and CRP at diagnosis and higher presence of HLA-B27.
