RESUMO

Norovirus, a major cause of gastroenteritis in people of all ages worldwide, was first reported in South Korea in 1999. The most common causal agents of pediatric acute gastroenteritis are norovirus and rotavirus. While vaccination has reduced the pediatric rotavirus infection rate, norovirus vaccines have not been developed. Therefore, prediction and prevention of norovirus are very important. Norovirus is divided into genogroups GI-GVII, with GII.4 being the most prevalent. However, in 2012-2013, GII.17 showed a higher incidence than GII.4 and a novel variant, GII.P17-GII.17, appeared. In this study, 204 stool samples collected in 2013-2014 were screened by reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction; 11 GI (5.39%) and 45 GII (22.06%) noroviruses were identified. GI.4, GI.5, GII.4, GII.6 and GII.17 were detected. The whole genomes of the three norovirus GII.17 were sequenced. The whole genome of GII.17 consists of three open reading frames of 5109, 1623 and 780 bp. Compared with 20 GII.17 strains isolated in other countries, we observed numerous changes in the protruding P2 domain of VP1 in the Korean GII.17 viruses. Our study provided genome information that might aid in epidemic prevention, epidemiology studies and vaccine development.

Human bocaviruses (HBoVs) have been detected in human gastrointestinal infections worldwide. In 2005, HBoV was also discovered in infants and children with infections of the lower respiratory tract. Recently, several genotypes of this parvovirus, including HBoV genotype 2 (HBoV2), genotype 3 (HBoV3) and genotype 4 (HBoV4), were discovered and found to be closely related to HBoV. HBoV2 was first detected in stool samples from children in Pakistan, followed by detection in other countries. HBoV3 was detected in Australia and HBoV4 was identified in stool samples from Nigeria, Tunisia and the USA. Recently, HBoV infection has been on the rise throughout the world, particularly in countries neighbouring South Korea; however, there have been very few studies on Korean strains. In this study, we characterised the whole genome and determined the phylogenetic position of CUK-BC20, a new clinical HBoV strain isolated in South Korea. The CUK-BC20 genome of 5184 nucleotides (nt) contains three open-reading frames (ORFs). The genotype of CUK-BC20 is HBoV2, and 98.77% of its nt sequence is identical with those of other HBoVs, namely Rus-Nsc10-N386. Especially, the ORF3 amino acid sequences from positions 212-213 and 454 corresponding to a variable region (VR)1 and VR5, respectively, showed genotype-specific substitutions that distinguished the four HBoV genotypes. As the first whole-genome sequence analysis of HBoV in South Korea, this information will provide a valuable reference for the detection of recombination, tracking of epidemics and development of diagnosis methods for HBoV.

Objective: To investigate the prevalence of visual impairment and factors associated with visual impairment among people aged 50 years and above in Funing County, Jiangsu Province. Methods: Cross-sectional study. Random cluster sampling was used in selecting individuals aged ≥50 years in 30 clusters, and 5 947 individuals received visual acuity testing and eye examination. Stata 13.0 software was used to analyze the data. Multivariate logistic regression was used to detect possible factors of visual impairment such as age, gender and education. Statistical significance was defined as P< 0.05. Results: A total of 6 145 persons aged 50 years and above were enumerated, and 5 947 (96.8%) participants were examined. Based on the criteria of World Health Organization (WHO) visual impairment classification and presenting visual acuity, 138 persons were diagnosed as blindness, and 1 405 persons were diagnosed as low vision. The prevalence of blindness and low vision was 2.32% and 23.63%, respectively. And the prevalence of visual impairment was 25.95%. Based on the criteria of WHO visual impairment classification and best-corrected visual acuity, 92 persons were diagnosed as blindness, and 383 persons were diagnosed as low vision. The prevalence of blindness and low vision was 1.55% and 6.44%, respectively. And the prevalence of visual impairment was 7.99%. Concerning presenting visual acuity and best-corrected visual acuity, the prevalence of blindness and low vision was higher in old people, females and less educated persons. Cataract (46.63%) was the leading cause of blindness. Uncorrected refractive error (36.51%) was also a main cause of visual impairment. Conclusion: The prevalence of visual impairment is higher in old people, females and less educated persons in Funing County, Jiangsu Province. Cataract is still the leading cause of visual impairment. (Chin J Ophthalmol, 2017, 53: 502-508).

Understanding the interactions between the hemiparasite Santalum album L. and its hosts has theoretical and practical significance in sandalwood plantations. In a pot study, we tested the effects of two non-N2-fixing (Bischofia polycarpa (Levl.) Airy Shaw and Dracontomelon duperreranum Pierre) and two N2-fixing hosts (Acacia confusa Merr. and Dalbergia odorifera T. Chen) on the growth characteristics and nitrogen (N) nutrition of S. album. Biomass production of shoot, root and haustoria, N and total amino acid were significantly greater in S. album grown with the two N2-fixing hosts. Foliage and root δ(15)N values of S. album were significantly lower when grown with N2-fixing than with non-N2-fixing hosts. Significantly higher photosynthetic rates and ABA (abscisic acid) concentrations were seen in S. album grown with D. odorifera. Similarity in the proportional amounts of amino acid of root xylem sap between S. album and its host D. odorifera was also evident, suggesting major access to nitrogenous solutes from D. odorifera to S. album. Irrespective of host species, S. album clearly appeared to optimize xylem sap extraction from its hosts by higher transpiration and lower water-use efficiency than its host. The growth of two non-N2-fixing hosts parasitized by S. album was significantly greater than the equivalent values for unparasitized treatments, and lower growth and photosynthesis were observed for parasitized A. confusa, and significant decreases in root N, photosynthesis and transpiration for parasitized D. odorifera compared with unparasitized treatments. Furthermore, foliage ABA concentrations were significantly higher in all hosts parasitized by S. album than in their unparasitized counterparts. Our study is probably the first to report on host dependence and preference in the hemiparasite S. album, and the generated results may have important implications for understanding of the physiological interactions between host species and parasitic plants, and for successfully mixing plantations of S. album with D. odorifera.

Nutrient translocation from a host plant is vital to the growth and survival of its root parasitic plant, but few studies have investigated whether a parasitic plant is also able to transfer nutrients to its host. The role of N2-fixation in nitrogen (N) transfer between 7-month-old Dalbergia odorifera T. Chen nodulated with Bradyrhizobium elkanii DG and its hemiparasite Santalum album Linn. was examined by external (15)N labeling in a pot study. Four paired treatments were used, with (15)N given to either host or hemiparasite and the host either nodulated or grown on combined N. N2-fixation supplied 41-44% of total N in D. odorifera. Biomass, N and (15)N contents were significantly greater in both nodulated D. odorifera and S. album grown with paired nodulated D. odorifera. Significantly higher total plant (15)N recovery was in N donor D. odorifera (68-72%) than in N donor S. album (42-44%), regardless of the nodulation status in D. odorifera. Nitrogen transfer to S. album was significantly greater (27.8-67.8 mg plant(-1)) than to D. odorifera (2.0-8.9 mg plant(-1)) and 2.4-4.5 times greater in the nodulated pair than in the non-nodulated pair. Irrespective of the nodulation status, S. album was always the N-sink plant. The amount of two-way N transfer was increased by the presence of effective nodules, resulting in a greater net N transfer (22.6 mg plant(-1)) from host D. odorifera to hemiparasite S. album. Our results may provide N management strategies for D. odorifera/S. album mixed plantations in the field.

Most of clinical ultrasound imaging systems use a pre-determined sound speed, mostly 1540 m/s, in transmit- and receive-beamforming while actual sound speed varies depending on tissue composition and temperature. Sound speed errors, particularly in receive-beamforming, lead to resolution degradation and sensitivity loss in ultrasound imaging. In this paper, we propose a sound speed estimation method in which an optimal sound speed, the speed that makes the echo signal delays at the transducer elements be best matched to the theoretical delays, is estimated by maximizing the beamformed echo signal amplitude with respect to the sound speed and the reflector displacement from the central axis of the ultrasound beam. Since the sound speed can be estimated from the echo signals on several scan lines, the proposed method does not require excessive computation. Experimental imaging studies of phantoms and porcine tissue with a 6 MHz 128-element linear probe and a 3 MHz 128-element convex probe have shown that spatial resolution, particularly in the lateral direction, can be improved by the proposed method.

Limb muscles of eutherian (placental) mammals express a slow and three fast isoforms of myosin heavy chain (MyHC), but little is known about marsupial MyHCs. Sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) of limb MyHCs from seven marsupial species, spanning two orders, revealed four components, each of which specifically cross-reacted in Western blots with a monoclonal antibody (mAb) against a corresponding eutherian MyHC. For all seven species, the relative mobility of the band identified by each mAb matched that in the rat, suggesting that the four are homologous to eutherian slow, 2B, 2X and 2A MyHCs, respectively, in the order of decreasing mobility. Skeletal muscle fibres in mammalian limb muscles are of four types: slow, 2A, 2X, and 2B, each characterized by a distinct myosin heavy chain (MyHC) isoform. Existing monoclonal antibodies (mabs) against fast MyHCs lack fibre-type specificity across species and could not positively identify 2X fibres. In this work, mabs were raised against each of the fast MyHCs. These mabs were shown to be monospecific by Western blots and immunohistochemistry in the rat. The advantages of using these mabs for identifying the three fast fibre types and hybrid fibres expressing multiple isoforms were illustrated using rat tibialis anterior muscle. Immunohistochemical analyses confirmed the monospecificity of these mabs in the following additional species: mouse, guinea pig, rabbit, cat, and baboon. 2B fibres were absent in limb muscles of the cat and baboon. These mabs constitute a set of powerful tools for studying muscle fibre types and their transformations.
