RESUMO

Glioblastoma is one of the most malignant primary brain cancer. Despite surgical resection with modern technology followed by chemo-radiation therapy with temozolomide, resistance to the treatment and recurrence is common due to its aggressive and infiltrating nature of the tumor with high proliferation index. The median survival time of the patients with glioblastomas is less than 15 months. Till now there has been no report of molecular target specific for glioblastomas. Early diagnosis and development of molecular target specific for glioblastomas are essential for longer survival of the patients with glioblastomas. Development of biomarkers specific for glioblastomas is most important for early diagnosis, estimation of the prognosis, and molecular target therapy of glioblastomas. To that end, in this study, we have conducted a comprehensive proteome study using primary cells and tissues from patients with glioblastoma. In the discovery stage, we have identified 7429 glioblastoma-specific proteins, where 476 proteins were quantitated using Tandem Mass Tag (TMT) method; 228 and 248 proteins showed up and down-regulated pattern, respectively. In the validation stage (20 selected target proteins), we developed quantitative targeted method (MRM: Multiple reaction monitoring) using stable isotope standards (SIS) peptide. In this study, five proteins (CCT3, PCMT1, TKT, TOMM34, UBA1) showed the significantly different protein levels (t-test: p value ≤ 0.05, AUC ≥ 0.7) between control and cancer groups and the result of multiplex assay using logistic regression showed the 5-marker panel showed better sensitivity (0.80 and 0.90), specificity (0.92 and 1.00), error rate (10 and 2%), and AUC value (0.94 and 0.98) than the best single marker (TOMM34) in primary cells and tissues, respectively. Although we acknowledge that the model requires further validation in a large sample size, the 5 protein marker panel can be used as baseline data for the discovery of novel biomarkers of the glioblastoma.

RESUMO

Microbial rhodopsins are light-activated proteins that contain seven transmembrane alpha-helices. Spectral tuning in microbial rhodopsins is a useful optogenetic tool. In this study, we report a new site that controls spectral tuning. In the proteorhodopsins ISR34 and ISR36, a single amino-acid substitution at Cys189 caused an absorption maximum shift of 44 nm, indicating spectral tuning at a specific site. Comparison of single amino acid substitutions was conducted using photochemical and photobiological approaches. The maximum absorption for red-shift was measured for mutations at positions 189 and 105 in ISR34, both residues being equally important. Structural changes resulting from amino acid substitutions are related to pKa values, pumping activity and spectral tuning.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: Study purpose was to describe the child safety injury experiences, injury prevention behaviors and educational needs of immigrant Vietnamese women on Jeju Island, and to explore associations among those factors. METHODS: A descriptive correlational study was conducted using structured questionnaires to collect data from immigrant Vietnamese women who visited a multicultural centers on Jeju Island from January to April, 2017. RESULTS: Data from 60 women were analyzed. They were 28.2±5.5 years old, had resided in Korea for 40.6±31.1 months, and had 1.5±0.6 children on average. In total, 51.7% had previous injury prevention education, 68.2% had experienced child safety injuries, and 95.0% wanted to receive education on how to prevent child safety injuries. The mean total score of child injury prevention behaviors was 27.33±17.79, and that variable was associated with a longer duration of formal education (t=2.41, p=.021) and with women's experiences of child safety injury (t=5.97, p<.001). CONCLUSION: Immigrant Vietnamese women experienced a higher frequency of child safety injuries and needed educational opportunities to prevent these injuries. Further research is necessary to develop the essential content and effective methods for education on child safety injury prevention among this unique multicultural population.

RESUMO

Data about Asian children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes are sparse. This study's objectives were to describe blood glucose (BG) levels and related factors at a camp for Korean children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes. This descriptive study was conducted January 8-10, 2015. The participants, 24 children and adolescents, were recruited for a 3-day residential diabetes camp. Data on 24 campers were analyzed. Their mean age was 13.4 (± 1.7) years; 44.4% were boys, and mean HgbA1c was 8.5% (± 1.4%). Results revealed that BG levels were maintained safely: The mean BG level during the 3-day stay was 171.1 (± 33.3) mg/dl. Multiple regression analysis showed that insulin adjustment for hyperglycemia (standardized ß = .426; t = 2.431; p = .030) and snacks for hypoglycemia (standardized ß = -.719; t = -3.723; p = .003) at the camp were the only independent contributors to mean BG levels during the 3-day study period. No demographic or clinical factor was found to be associated with the mean BG level. This is the first study of its kind to be conducted in an Asian population, presumably because the prevalence of type 1 diabetes in Asia is low and diabetes camps are a novel concept. Further research is recommended to assess the characteristics of campers (e.g., diet, activity levels, and cultural background) and to determine how the health outcomes of children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes are affected by camp programs.

RESUMO

The present study explores the structural, optical (photoluminescence (PL)), and electrical properties of lateral heterojunctions fabricated by selective exposure of mechanically exfoliated few layer two-dimensional (2D) molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) flakes under oxygen (O2)-plasma. Raman spectra of the plasma exposed MoS2 flakes show a significant loss in the structural quality due to lattice distortion and creation of oxygen-containing domains in comparison to the pristine part of the same flake. The PL mapping evidences the complete quenching of peak A and B consistent with a change in the exciton states of MoS2 after the plasma treatment, indicating a significant change in its band gap properties. The electrical transport measurements performed across the pristine and the plasma-exposed MoS2 flake exhibit a gate tunable current rectification behavior with a rectification ratio up to 1.3 × 10(3) due to the band-offset at the pristine and plasma-exposed MoS2 interface. Our Raman, PL, and electrical transport data confirm the formation of an excellent lateral heterojunction in 2D MoS2 through its bandgap modulation via oxygen plasma.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: To describe a simulation-based assessment (SBA) to evaluate the clinical competencies of nursing students in children's health and to compare its results with grade point average (GPA), self-efficacy, topic-specific knowledge, and self-reported clinical competency using the Six-D Scale. METHODS: This cross-sectional, descriptive study recruited nursing students from a children's health clinical practicum. Students were assigned to either an asthma (n=55) or a type 1 diabetes (n=48) care scenario conducted on a high-fidelity simulator. Clinical competencies were assessed using the global rating scale (GRS) and a checklist. RESULTS: Data on 103 students were analyzed. The SBA-GRS indicated that 64.6%-87.3% of students passed. The SBA-GRS showed a statistically significant positive association with the SBA checklist in both the asthma (rho=.763, p<.001) and the type 1 diabetes (rho=.475, p=.001) group. In the asthma group, the SBA-GRS and checklist showed statistically significant associations with GPA (rho=.413, p=.002 vs. r=.508, p<.001) and the Six-D Scale (rho=.266, p=.049 vs. r=.352, p=.008); in the diabetes group, only the SBA checklist showed a statistically significant association with self-efficacy (r=.339, p=.018) and the Six-D Scale (r=.373, p=.009). Four groups by SBA-GRS had statistically significant differences in scores on the SBA checklist in both groups (F=25.757, p<.001 in the asthma group; F=4.790, p=.006 in the diabetes group) and GPA only in the asthma groups (F=6.095, p<.001). CONCLUSION: SBA was found to be feasible for nursing students. The GRS and checklist were reasonably correlated with other evaluation methods of student competency, but correlations were better with easier scenarios.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to explore the quality of life of children in Korea with type 1 diabetes and related factors. METHODS: Children were recruited from a diabetes camp. Data were collected using four instruments: the PedsQL™ 3.2 Diabetes Module, Self-Efficacy for Diabetes Self-Management, the Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale for Children, and the Diabetes Management Behavior Scale. RESULTS: Children who were older (t = 2.197, p = .041), male (t = -3.579, p = .002), and less depressed (t = -2.859, p = .010) were more likely to have better quality of life. CONCLUSION: Further research is needed in children with type 1 diabetes in countries where this disease is rare, and governmental support and public awareness are limited.

RESUMO

Hollow microporous organic networks were prepared by using silica spheres as the template and tris(4-ethynylphenyl)amine and 2,6-diiodo-9,10-anthraquinone as the building blocks for the Sonogashira coupling. The resultant materials bearing triphenylamine and anthraquinone moieties showed efficient visible light absorption and catalytic activities in the photochemical oxidative coupling of benzylamines. Through the comparison studies of hollow and nonhollow catalytic materials, the diffusion pathway effect of the substrates was clearly observed in the photochemical conversion of benzylamines.

RESUMO

Since its reappearance at the Military Demarcation Line in 1993, malaria has been occurring annually in Korea. Malaria is regarded as a third grade nationally notifiable disease susceptible to climate change. The objective of this study is to quantify the effect of climatic factors on the occurrence of malaria in Korea and construct a malaria occurrence model for predicting the future trend of malaria under the influence of climate change. Using data from 2001-2011, the effect of time lag between malaria occurrence and mean temperature, relative humidity and total precipitation was investigated using spectral analysis. Also, a principal component regression model was constructed, considering multicollinearity. Future climate data, generated from RCP 4.5 climate change scenario and CNCM3 climate model, was applied to the constructed regression model to simulate future malaria occurrence and analyze the trend of occurrence. Results show an increase in the occurrence of malaria and the shortening of annual time of occurrence in the future.

RESUMO

We have demonstrated that the electrical property of single-layer molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) can be significantly tuned from the semiconducting to the insulating regime via controlled exposure to oxygen plasma. The mobility, on-current and resistance of single-layer MoS2 devices were varied by up to four orders of magnitude by controlling the plasma exposure time. Raman spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and density functional theory studies suggest that the significant variation of electronic properties is caused by the creation of insulating MoO3-rich disordered domains in the MoS2 sheet upon oxygen plasma exposure, leading to an exponential variation of resistance and mobility as a function of plasma exposure time. The resistance variation calculated using an effective medium model is in excellent agreement with the measurements. The simple approach described here can be used for the fabrication of tunable two-dimensional nanodevices based on MoS2 and other transition metal dichalcogenides.

RESUMO

High-performance solution-processed short-channel carbon nanotube (CNT) thin film transistors (TFTs) are fabricated using densely aligned arrays of metallic CNTs (m-CNTs) for the source and drain electrodes, while aligned arrays of semiconducting enriched CNTs (s-CNTs) are used as the channel material. The electrical transport measurements at room temperature show that using the m-CNT as the contact for the s-CNT array devices with a 2 µm channel length performed superior to those where the control Pd was the contact. The m-CNT contact devices exhibited a maximum (average) on-conductance of 36.5 µS (19.2 µS), a transconductance of 2.6 µS (1.2 µS), a mobility of 51 cm(2) V(-1) s(-1) (25 cm(2) V(-1) s(-1)), and a current on-off ratio of 1.1 × 10(6) (2.5 × 10(5)). These values are almost an order of magnitude higher than that of control Pd contact devices with the same channel length and s-CNT linear density. The low temperature charge transport measurements suggest that these improved performances are due to the m-CNT contact s-CNT devices having a lower Schottky barrier compared to the Pd contact s-CNT devices. We attribute this lower Schottky barrier to the unique geometry of our devices. In addition to using semiconducting enriched CNTs, our results suggest that using the metallic CNT as an electrode can significantly enhance the performance of CNT TFTs.

RESUMO

Hollow microporous organic networks (H-MONs) were prepared by a template method using silica spheres. The shell thickness was delicately controlled by changing the synthetic conditions. The H-MONs were used as a template for the synthesis of nanoparticulate Co3O4 hollows which showed excellent catalytic performance in H2O2 oxidation.
