RESUMO

PURPOSE: To evaluate the efficacy of combined therapy of teriparatide and raloxifene on the osseointegration of titanium dental implants in a rabbit model of osteoporotic bone. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Sixty female rabbits were randomly divided into six groups. The sham ovariectomy group (control) consisted of animals that received no medication. Animals in the ovariectomy group (OVX) underwent ovariectomy and received no medication. The combined group consisted of ovariectomized animals that received combined teriparatide (10 mg/kg) for 12 weeks and raloxifene (10 mg/kg) for 12 weeks. The sequential group (SEQ) consisted of ovariectomized animals that received teriparatide (10 mg/kg) for the first 6 weeks and raloxifene therapy (10 mg/kg) for the following 6 weeks sequentially. The parathormone (PTH) and raloxifene (RAL) groups consisted of ovariectomized animals that received only teriparatide (10 mg/kg) for 12 weeks or raloxifene (10 mg/kg) for 12 weeks, respectively. Dental implants (Bilimplant) were placed in the proximal metaphysis of both tibias in all rabbits. Histomorphometric and microCT studies were performed on the specimens obtained from the right tibia bone. Removal torque (RTQ) and implant stability quotient (ISQ) tests were performed on the specimens obtained from the left tibia bone. The results were compared and evaluated statistically. RESULTS: RTQ analysis revealed a statistically significant difference between the mean values of the combined group (93.01 ± 27.19 Ncm) and the OVX group (49.6 ± 12.5 Ncm) (P = .015). The highest mean T0 (implantation day) value was obtained in the control group (67.1 ± 3.4 Ncm), and the lowest mean value was obtained in the OVX group (61.4 ± 3.8 Ncm). The highest T1 mean (3 months after implantation) was obtained by the combined group (76.6 ± 3.8 Ncm), and the lowest mean was obtained by the OVX group (68.9 ± 6.2 Ncm). Histomorphometric analyses showed that the mean percentage of bone-to-implant contact (BIC%) of the combined group (51.2%) was significantly higher than that of the OVX group (28.6%) (P =.006). In the microCT examinations, it was found that the mean BIC% value of the combined group (41.1%) was significantly higher than that of the OVX group (24.1%) (P < .001). CONCLUSIONS: According to the results of the current study, combined therapy of teriparatide and raloxifene improves the BIC and osseointegration of titanium dental implants in osteoporotic bone compared with sequential or independent therapy with these agents.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To compare the efficacy of preemptive ibuprofen, local ketamine, and their combination in managing postoperative pain and trismus following third molar surgery. MATERIALS AND METHODS: One hundred patients were randomly divided into 4 groups. The Intrafen Group had their impacted third molars surgically removed under local anesthesia after receiving intravenous (IV) ibuprofen for preemptive effect. The Ketamine Group received an IV placebo before the surgery, and the extraction process was completed with a local anesthetic-ketamine combination. The Combined Group received preemptive IV ibuprofen before the procedure, and the surgery was performed with a local anesthetic-ketamine combination. The Control Group received an IV placebo before the procedure and then had their impacted third molars removed under local anesthesia. The Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) values, corresponding to the patients' pain levels at the 2nd and 12th postoperative hours and the total amount of analgesic dose used in the first 24 hours, were recorded, and evaluated. The maximum mouth opening of the patients was measured immediately before the procedure, and on the second and seventh postoperative days. The level of patient satisfaction in all groups was assessed during the procedure. RESULTS: The mean VAS value corresponding to the second-hour pain level of the combined group was statistically significantly lower than the other groups (P = .003). A statistically significant difference was found in the mean VAS values corresponding to the pain levels of the groups, favoring the combined group compared to the other groups (P ≤ .001). A significant difference was observed between the VAS difference values corresponding to the pain levels of the Intrafen group and the Ketamine group, favoring the Intrafen group (P = .038). The Ketamine group consumed the most analgesic on average over the first 24 hours, whereas the Combined group consumed the least. No statistically significant difference was found between the mean trismus levels of the groups on days 0-2 (P = .528) and days 0-7 (P = .129). The intraoperative patient satisfaction level of the combined group was significantly higher than that of the other groups (P = .030). CONCLUSION: Preemptive Intrafen is an effective regimen for postoperative pain management and is superior to the local anesthetic-ketamine regimen. The most effective method to reduce postoperative pain following third molar surgery is to use a combination of these 2 regimens. However, none of the treatment methods used in the study had a positive effect on postoperative trismus.

RESUMO

This study was designed to investigate the effects of vinegar-based marinades on pH, technological properties, color, microstructure, texture, and sensory characteristics of 9-year-old Holstein meat which had tough texture. To marinate the Longissimus lumborum steaks, three different marinades were prepared depending on the different additions of vinegar: black chokeberry (BV), grape (GV), and hawthorn vinegars (HV). The group with water (without vinegar) was prepared as a control sample (C). The steak samples were dipped into the vinegar-based marinades and stored at 4°C for 24 h. Vinegar-based marinades decreased the pH and cooking loss of the samples (p < .05). The highest a* values were determined in the BV group, while the samples marinated with vinegar-based marinades had lower L* values than the control group (p < .05). The samples marinated with grape vinegar marinade had the lowest hardness, WBSF, and WBSE values (p < .05). SEM images and sensory analysis results also supported these texture results. The results suggest that grape vinegar-based marinade may be a promising natural tenderizer to improve textural characteristics of tough meats.

RESUMO

The study investigated the effect of albedo and flavedo extracts of grapefruit and pomelo on storage stability of turkey patties during refrigerated storage. Five different types of products were developed depending on the addition of extracts viz. control (C), albedo and flavedo extract of grapefruit (GA and GF), and albedo and flavedo extract of pomelo (PA and PF). The products were stored for 10 days and evaluated for lipid and protein oxidation, pH, colour and sensory properties. The extracts improved the lipid oxidative stability by decreasing (P < 0.05) the TBARS values of the samples compared to control group. No effect of the extract treatments (P > 0.05) was observed on pH and colour values of the products (a* and b*). The lowest TBARS values were found for the products containing GF (0.78 mg MA/kg) on day 4. The treatments showed a significant impact on flavour of the products and the highest scores were obtained for PA containing products.

RESUMO

This study evaluates the physicochemical and microbiological properties and sensory parameters of beef patties formulated with black chokeberry (B1), blackberry (B2), red currant (B3) and blueberry (B4) pomace water extracts during refrigerated storage over 9 days. The berry pomace extract treatment significantly decreased the TBARS numbers of the samples (P < 0.05). The lowest total carbonyl content was determined in the groups of B1 and B3 on the 6th day (P < 0.05). The berry pomace extract treatment did not affect the lightness values of the samples (P > 0.05). Beef patties including berry pomace extracts had lower coliform bacteria counts than the control patty C with no extract (P < 0.05), except for day 9. The results suggest that water extract of black chokeberry pomace may be a promising natural preservative among different berries' pomace extracts to improve oxidative stability and increase the microbiological quality of beef patties during refrigerated storage.

RESUMO

The objective of this research was to evaluate the stress and damage occurring on the bone model of D2 quality during implant insertion procedure using a novel dynamic finite element analysis (FEA) modeling. Three-dimensional finite element method was used to simulate the implant placement into the mandible. The cross-sectional model of the implant was created in SolidWorks 2007 software. The implant model was created to resemble a commercially available fine thread bone level dental implant (Bilimplant®, Turkey). 3 D bone models created with and without cortical bone drilling were specified according to D2 bone (Misch's Bone Classification) with a 1.5 mm cortical bone thickness. The stress patterns in both cancellous and cortical crestal bone were examined during implant insertion by using a novel dynamic FEA in ABACUS/Explicit (ABAQUS/Explicit version 6.14). According to the results of the dynamic FEA, it was reduced stress and damage significantly on the crestal bone region using the cortical drill before the implantation. Also, implant placement time was shorter when the cortical drill was used. The present research is a pilot study using a novel dynamic FEM to model and simulate the dental implant insertion process. This study showed that the use of cortical drills decreased the stress in the bone, especially crestal region, and shortened the whole implant insertion time.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: The primary aim of this study is to assess, in an animal model, whether biostimulation of osteoporotic bone with low-level laser therapy improves the osseointegration of dental implants. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Twenty-two female rabbits were randomly divided into two groups: sham-ovariectomy and bilateral-ovariectomy. Laser therapy was applied to the implants placed in the right tibial bones and was not applied to implants placed in the left tibial bones. The periotest device was used for the stability test. Periotest values were recorded after the implantation (T0) and when the animals were euthanized (T1). The removal torque test and micro-computed tomography examination were evaluated. RESULTS: As a result of removal torque, the mean of ovariectomy-laser group (56.1 ± 5.1 Ncm) was higher than sham-ovariectomy group (55.4 ± 18.5 Ncm) (p = 0.9). In periotest analysis, a significant difference was found between the values of T1 and T0 in all groups, except sham-ovariectomy group (p < 0.05); and the highest difference was found in the ovariectomy-laser group. Micro-CT examination demonstrated that ovariectomy-laser group showed an increase of implant-bone contact when compared with ovariectomy (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: The values obtained from biomechanical tests and micro-CT in the ovariectomy-laser group were significantly higher than the ovariectomy group and achieved the values in the healthy bone.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: The aim of the present study was to identify the preemptive analgesic effect of intravenous (IV) ibuprofen before and after mandibular third molar surgery. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We randomly divided 75 patients into 3 groups. Group 1 received IV ibuprofen 60 minutes before surgery and IV placebo (100 mL of saline) after surgery. Group 2 received IV placebo (100 mL of saline) before surgery and IV ibuprofen 60 minutes after surgery. Finally, group 3 received IV placebo (100 mL of saline) 60 minutes before and after surgery. Postoperative pain was recorded using a visual analog scale at 1, 2, 4, 6, 8, 12, and 24 hours within the postoperative period. The total dose of rescue acetaminophen intake was recorded during the first 24 hours of the postoperative period. RESULTS: The efficacy of postoperative analgesia was greater within the preoperative IV ibuprofen group compared with the other groups (P < .001). The placebo group had required more rescue analgesia within the first hour compared with the other groups. The average dose of acetaminophen administered in group 1 was 640 mg compared with 1240 mg in group 2 and 1840 mg in group 3 within the first 24 hours after surgery (P < .001). CONCLUSIONS: The present study has shown that the preemptive use of IV ibuprofen resulted in less pain and a decrease in the requirement for rescue analgesia during the first 24 hours after third molar surgery.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Sucuk is one of the popular traditional Turkish meat products. The aim of this research was to evaluate the effects of different spices (clove, 0.2%; cinnamon, 0.5%) and animal fat types (beef fat, tallow, subcutaneous and tail fat) on the formation of heterocyclic aromatic amine (HCA) in barbecued sucuk. RESULTS: Although 2-amino-3-methyl-9H-pyrido[2,3-b]indole (MeAαC) could not be detected in the any of the samples, 2-amino-3-methylimidazo[4,5-f]quinoxaline (IQx) (up to 0.54 ng g-1 ), 2-amino-3-methylimidazo[4,5-f]quinoline (IQ) (up to 5.96 ng g-1 ), 2-amino-3,8-dimethylimidazo[4,5-f]quinoxaline (MeIQx) (up to 0.21 ng g-1 ), 2-amino-3,4-dimethylimidazo[4,5-f]quinoline (MeIQ) (up to 0.34 ng g-1 ), 2-amino-3,7,8-trimethylimidazo[4,5-f]quinoxaline (7,8-DiMeIQx) (up to 0.32 ng g-1 ), 2-amino-3,4,8-trimethylimidazo[4,5-f]quinoxaline (4,8-DiMeIQx) (up to 0.19 ng g-1 ), 2-amino-1-methyl-6-phenylimidazo[4,5-b]pyridine (PhIP) (up to 1.94 ng g-1 ) and 2-amino-9H-pyrido[2,3-b]indole (AαC) (up to 0.98 ng g-1 ) were found in the barbecued sucuk samples. CONCLUSION: The results of the current study have shown that HCAs could be formed in barbecued sucuk. Total HCA can be affected by adding different fat types; however, adding clove and cinnamon decreased the total HCA content in the subcutaneous fat group of sucuk samples. © 2017 Society of Chemical Industry.

RESUMO

In this study, theoretical harmonic vibrational frequencies and geometric parameters of N-(4-methoxybenzoyl)-2-methylbenzenesulfonamide have been investigated by Hartree-Fock (HF), density functional theory (B3LYP hybrid functional) methods with 6-311++G (d,p) basis set, for the first time. Experimental FT-IR (400-4000cm(-1)) and Laser-Raman spectra (100-4000cm(-1)) of title compound in solid phase have been recorded. Interaction energies, N-H⋯O hydrogen bonds, C-H⋯O and aromatic π⋯π stacking interactions in dimer structures of the title compound have been evaluated by the calculation methods. The dimer calculations have aimed to present the efficacy and performance of M06-2X hybrid functional on the intermolecular interactions and more strongly bound systems for the corrected and interaction energy by the counterpoise correction procedure. The interaction energies by M06-2X approach give more stable results than HF and B3LYP, extremely. The more strongly bonds, especially, on N-H⋯O hydrogen bonds and π⋯π interaction for the both dimer structure have also supported that the M06-2X functional of density functional is more effective.

RESUMO

In present study, the experimental and theoretical harmonic vibrational frequencies of gliclazide molecule have been investigated. The experimental FT-IR (400-4000 cm(-1)) and Laser-Raman spectra (100-4000 cm(-1)) of the molecule in the solid phase were recorded. Theoretical vibrational frequencies and geometric parameters (bond lengths and bond angles) have been calculated using ab initio Hartree Fock (HF), density functional theory (B3LYP hybrid function) methods with 6-311++G(d,p) and 6-31G(d,p) basis sets by Gaussian 09W program. The assignments of the vibrational frequencies were performed by potential energy distribution (PED) analysis by using VEDA 4 program. Theoretical optimized geometric parameters and vibrational frequencies have been compared with the corresponding experimental data, and they have been shown to be in a good agreement with each other. Also, the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) and lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) energies have been found.

RESUMO

The effect of sunflower head pith on the functional properties of emulsions was studied by using a model system. Oil/water (O/W) model emulsion systems were prepared from fresh and frozen beef by the addition of the pith at five concentrations. Emulsion capacity (EC), stability (ES), viscosity (EV), colour and flow properties of the prepared model system emulsions were analyzed. The pith addition increased the EC and ES and the highest EC and ES values were reached when 5% of pith added; however, further increase in the pith concentration caused an inverse trend in these values. Fresh beef emulsions had higher EC and ES values than did frozen beef emulsions. One percent pith concentration was the critic level for the EV values of fresh beef emulsions. EV values of the emulsions reached a maximum level at 5% pith level, followed by a decrease at 7% pit level.

RESUMO

A three-factor Box-Behnken design was adopted for studying the simultaneous effects of processing variables such as fat (10-30%), wheat bran (5-15%) and NaCl (0-2%) on physicochemical, textural and sensory properties of cooked beef patties. In addition, the ridge analysis was conducted to find the values of processing variables that maximise and minimise the texture profile analysis (TPA) parameters (hardness, chewiness, gumminess, adhesiveness, springiness, resilience and cohesiveness) and sensory ratings. Experimental design allowed for evaluation of potential interactive and quadratic effects between these variables; fat wheat bran and NaCl. It was found that protein and fat contents of patties was decreased and increased, respectively as the amount of wheat bran increased. NaCl increased the ash content of patties. Fat and wheat bran had a notable influence on textural properties, which improved the textural properties at certain levels. Lower addition of wheat bran and NaCl into patty resulted in higher acceptable product with respect to firmness, juiciness and overall quality properties.
