RESUMO

Parasitic salmon lice (Lepeophtheirus salmonis) are a constraint to the sustainable growth of salmonids in open net pens, and this issue has caused production to level off in recent years in the most aquaculture-intensive areas of Norway. The maximum allowed biomass at a regional level is regulated by using the so-called "traffic light" system, where salmon louse-induced mortality of migrating wild salmon post-smolts is evaluated against set targets. As a case study, we have investigated how a specific aquaculture-intensive area can reduce its louse levels sufficiently to achieve a low impact on wild salmon. Analyses of the output from a virtual post-smolt model that uses data on the reported number of salmon lice in fish farms as key input data and estimates the salmon louse-induced mortality of wild out-migrating Atlantic salmon post-smolts, suggested that female louse abundance on the local farms must be halved in spring to reach the goal implied by the traffic light system. The outcome of a modelling scenario simulating a proposed new plan for coordinated production and fallowing proved beneficial, with an overall reduction in louse infestations and treatment efforts. The interannual variability in louse abundance in spring, however, increased for this scenario, implying unacceptably high louse abundance when many farms were in their second production year. We then combined the scenario with coordinated production with other louse control measures. Only measures that reduced the density of farmed salmonids in open cages in the study area resulted in reductions in salmon louse infestations to acceptable levels. This could be achieved either by stocking with larger fish to reduce exposure time or by reducing fish numbers, e.g. by producing in closed units.

The molecular spin-crossover phenomenon between high-spin (HS) and low-spin (LS) states is a promising route to next-generation information storage, sensing applications, and molecular spintronics. Spin-crossover complexes also provide a unique opportunity to study the ligand field (LF) properties of a system in both HS and LS states while maintaining the same ligand environment. Presently, we employ complementing valence and core-level spectroscopic methods to probe the electronic excited-state manifolds of the spin-crossover complex [FeII(H2B(pz)2)2phen]0. Light-induced excited spin-state trapping (LIESST) at liquid He temperatures is exploited to characterize magnetic and spectroscopic properties of the photoinduced HS state using SQUID magnetometry and magnetic circular dichroism spectroscopy. In parallel, Fe 2p3d RIXS spectroscopy is employed to examine the ΔS = 0, 1 excited LF states. These experimental studies are combined with state-of-the-art CASSCF/NEVPT2 and CASCI/NEVPT2 calculations characterizing the ground and LF excited states. Analysis of the acquired LF information further supports the notion that the spin-crossover of [FeII(H2B(pz)2)2phen]0 is asymmetric, evidenced by a decrease in eπ in the LS state. The results demonstrate the power of cross-correlating spectroscopic techniques with high and low LF information content to make accurate excited-state assignments, as well as the current capabilities of ab initio theory in interpreting these electronic properties.

The effective control of ectoparasitic salmon lice, Lepeophtheirus salmonis, in fish farms is challenged by the salmon lice having developed resistance towards several antiparasitic drugs and by the effectiveness of non-medicinal treatments being limited by considerations of fish welfare. When new antiparasitics are introduced to the market, these should be used sparingly to slow resistance development. Using a population model for salmon lice parameterised for salmonid fish farms in Norway, we quantified how reduced treatment effectiveness influences treatment frequency and lice abundance. Furthermore, we investigated when in the production cycle a highly effective lice treatment leads to the largest reduction in the total number of treatments, mean lice abundance and lice larvae production. Results showed that reductions in treatment effectiveness to lower than 50% led to the steepest increases in treatment frequency and mean lice abundance, as well as to increased risk that lice abundance increased beyond control. The timing of the most effective treatment had only moderate effects on the total treatment need and the mean number of adult female lice through the production cycle, but large effect on the production of lice larvae in spring. These findings imply that farmers can optimise the timing of the most effective treatment to reduce the release of lice larvae in the period of year when wild salmonids are in coastal waters, without compromising total treatment need or mean lice levels.

INTRODUCTION: There are several potential causes of QRS-axis deviation in the ECG, but there is limited data on the prognostic significance of QRS-axis deviation in ACS patients. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: We evaluated the long-term prognostic significance of acute phase frontal plane QRS-axis deviation and its shift during hospital stay in ACS patients. A total of 1026 patients who met the inclusion criteria were divided into three categories: normal (n = 823), left (n = 166) and right/extreme axis (n = 37). RESULTS: The median survival time was 9.0 years (95% CI 7.9-10.0) in the normal, 3.6 years (95% CI 2.4-4.7) in the left and 1.3 years (95% CI 0.2-2.4) in the right/extreme axis category. Both short and long-term all-cause mortality was lowest in the normal axis category and highest in the right/extreme axis category. Compared to normal axis, both admission phase QRS-axis deviation groups were independently associated with a higher risk of all-cause mortality. When including left ventricular hypertrophy in the ECG, only the right/extreme axis retained its statistical significance (aHR 1.76; 95% CI 1.16-2.66, p = 0.007). Axis shift to another axis category had no effect on mortality. CONCLUSION: In ACS patients, acute phase QRS-axis deviation was associated with higher risk of all-cause mortality. Among the axis deviation groups, right/extreme QRS-axis deviation was the strongest predictor of mortality in the multivariable analysis. Further studies are required to investigate to what extent this association is caused by pre-existing or by ACS-induced axis deviations. QRS-axis shift during hospital stay had no effect on all-cause mortality.

INTRODUCTION: Atrial fibrillation (AF) is a frequent finding in acute coronary syndrome (ACS), but there is conflicting scientific evidence regarding its long-term impact on patient outcome. The aim of this study was to survey and compare the ≥10-year mortality of ACS patients with sinus rhythm (SR) and AF. METHODS: Patients were divided into 2 groups based on rhythm in their 12-lead ECGs: (1) SR (n = 788) at hospital admission and discharge (including sinus bradycardia, physiological sinus arrhythmia, and sinus tachycardia) and (2) AF/atrial flutter (n = 245) at both hospital admission and discharge, or SR and AF combination. Patients who failed to match the inclusion criteria were excluded from the final analysis. The main outcome surveyed was long-term all-cause mortality between AF and SR groups during the whole follow-up time. RESULTS: Consecutive ACS patients (n = 1,188, median age 73 years, male/female 58/42%) were included and followed up for ≥10 years. AF patients were older (median age 77 vs. 71 years, p < 0.001) and more often female than SR patients. AF patients more often presented with non-ST-elevation myocardial infarction (69.8 vs. 50.4%, p < 0.001), had a higher rate of diabetes (31.0 vs. 22.8%, p = 0.009), and were more often using warfarin (32.2 vs. 5.1%, p < 0.001) or diuretic medication (55.1 vs. 25.8%, p < 0.001) on admission than patients with SR. The use of warfarin at discharge was also more frequent in the AF group (55.5 vs. 14.8%, p < 0.001). The rates of all-cause and cardiovascular mortality were higher in the AF group (80.9 vs. 50.3%, p < 0.001, and 73.8 vs. 69.6%, p = 0.285, respectively). In multivariable analysis, AF was independently associated with higher mortality when compared to SR (adjusted HR 1.662; 95% CI: 1.387-1.992, p < 0.001). CONCLUSION: AF/atrial flutter at admission and/or discharge independently predicted poorer long-term outcome in ACS patients, with 66% higher mortality within the ≥10-year follow-up time when compared to patients with SR.

BACKGROUND: Long-term outcome of the three categories of acute coronary syndrome (ACS) in real-life patient cohorts is not well known. The objective of this study was to survey the 10-year outcome of an ACS patient cohort admitted to a university hospital and to explore factors affecting the outcome. METHODS: A total of 1188 consecutive patients (median age 73 years) with ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI), non-ST-elevation myocardial infarction (NSTEMI) or unstable angina pectoris (UA) in 2002-2003 were included and followed up for ≥ 10 years. RESULTS: Mortality for STEMI, NSTEMI and UA patients during the follow-up period was 52.5%, 69.9% and 41.0% (p < 0.001), respectively. In multivariable Cox regression analysis, only age and creatinine level at admission were independently associated with patient outcome in all the three ACS categories when analyzed separately. CONCLUSIONS: All the three ACS categories proved to have high mortality rates during long-term followup in a real-life patient cohort. NSTEMI patients had worse outcome than STEMI and UA patients during the whole follow-up period. Our study results indicate clear differences in the prognostic significance of various demographic and therapeutic parameters within the three ACS categories.

BACKGROUND: Long-term outcome of real-life acute coronary syndrome (ACS) patients with selected ECG patterns is not well known. PURPOSE: To survey the 10-year outcome of pre-specified ECG patterns in ACS patients admitted to a university hospital. METHODS: A total of 1184 consecutive acute coronary syndrome patients in 2002-2003 were included and followed up for 10 years. The patients were classified into nine pre-specified ECG categories: 1) ST elevation; 2) pathological Q waves without ST elevation; 3) left bundle branch block (LBBB); 4) right bundle branch block (RBBB) 5) left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) without ST elevation except in leads aVR and/or V1; 6) global ischemia ECG (ST depression ≥0.5 mm in 6 leads, maximally in leads V4-5 with inverted T waves and ST elevation ≥0.5 mm in lead aVR); 7) other ST depression and/or T wave inversion; 8) other findings and 9) normal ECG. RESULTS: Any abnormality in the ECG, especially Q waves, LBBB, LVH and global ischemia, had negative effect on outcome. In age- and gender adjusted Cox regression analysis, pathological Q waves (HR 2.28, 95%CI 1.20-4.32, p = .012), LBBB (HR 3.25, 95%CI 1.65-6.40, p = .001), LVH (HR 2.53, 95%CI 1.29-4.97, p = .007), global ischemia (HR 2.22, 95%CI 1.14-4.31, p = .019) and the combined group of other findings (HR 3.01, 95%CI 1.56-6.09, p = .001) were independently associated with worse outcome. CONCLUSIONS: During long-term follow-up of ACS patients, LBBB, ECG-LVH, global ischemia, and Q waves were associated with worse outcome than a normal ECG, RBBB, ST elevation or ST depression with or without associated T-wave inversion. LBBB was associated with the highest mortality rates.

BACKGROUND: A positive T wave in lead aVR (aVRT+) is an independent prognostic predictor of cardiovascular mortality in the general population as well as in cardiovascular disease. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: We evaluated the prognostic impact of aVRT+ in an ECG recorded as close to hospital discharge as possible in acute coronary syndrome patients (n = 527). We divided the patients into three categories based on the findings in the admission ECG: ST elevation, global ischemia and other ST/T changes. RESULTS: In the whole study population, and in all the three ECG subgroups, the 10-year all-cause mortality rate was higher in the aVRT+ group than in the aVRT- group. In Cox regression analysis, the age and gender adjusted hazard ratio (HR) for aVRT+ to predict all-cause mortality in the whole study population was 1.43 (95% confidence interval [CI] 1.12-1.83; p = 0.004). To predict cardiovascular mortality, the age and gender adjusted HR for aVRT+ was 1.54 (95% CI 1.14-2.07; p = 0.005) in the whole study population and 2.07 (95% CI 1.07-4.03; p = 0.032) in the category with other ST/T changes. CONCLUSION: In ACS patients with or without ST elevation, but with ischemic ST/T changes in their presenting ECG, a positive or isoelectric T wave in lead aVR in an ECG recorded in the subacute in-hospital stage is associated with all-cause and cardiovascular mortality during long-term follow-up. Clinicians should pay attention to this simple ECG finding at hospital discharge.

BACKGROUND: Parasitic salmon lice (Lepeophtheirus salmonis) cause high economic losses in Atlantic salmon farming. Pyrethroids, which block arthropod voltage-gated sodium channels (Nav 1), are used for salmon delousing. However, pyrethroid resistance is common in L. salmonis. The present study characterized Nav 1 homologues in L. salmonis in order to identify channel mutations associated to resistance, called kdr (knockdown) mutations. RESULTS: Genome scans identified three L. salmonis Nav 1 homologues, LsNav 1.1, LsNav 1.2 and LsNav 1.3. Arthropod kdr mutations map to specific Nav 1 regions within domains DI-III, namely segments S5 and S6 and the linker helix connecting S4 and S5. The above channel regions were amplified by RT-PCR and sequenced in deltamethrin-susceptible and deltamethrin-resistant L. salmonis. While LsNav 1.1 and LsNav 1.2 lacked nucleotide polymorphisms showing association to resistance, LsNav 1.3 showed a non-synonymous mutation in S5 of DII occurring in deltamethrin-resistant parasites. The mutation is homologous to a previously described kdr mutation (I936V, numbering according to Musca domestica Vssc1) and was present in two pyrethroid-resistant L. salmonis strains (allele frequencies of 0.800 and 0.357), but absent in two pyrethroid-susceptible strains. CONCLUSIONS: The present study indicates that a kdr-mutation in LsNaV 1.3 may contribute to deltamethrin resistance in L. salmonis. © 2018 Society of Chemical Industry.

The Borrmann effect is the anomalous transmission of x-rays in perfect crystals under diffraction conditions. It arises from the interference of the incident and diffracted waves, which creates a standing wave with nodes at strongly absorbing atoms. Dipolar absorption of x-rays is thus diminished, which makes the crystal nearly transparent for certain x-ray wave vectors. Indeed, a relative enhancement of electric quadrupole absorption via the Borrmann effect has been demonstrated recently. Here we show that the Borrmann effect has a significantly larger impact on resonant x-ray emission than is observable in x-ray absorption. Emission from a dipole forbidden intermediate state may even dominate the corresponding x-ray spectra. Our work extends the domain of x-ray standing wave methods to resonant x-ray emission spectroscopy and provides means for novel spectroscopic experiments in d- and f-electron systems.

In this paper we report an X-ray emission study of bulk aqueous sulfuric acid. Throughout the range of molarities from 1 M to 18 M the sulfur Kß emission spectra from H2SO4 (aq) depend on the molar fractions and related deprotonation of H2SO4. We compare the experimental results with results from emission spectrum calculations based on atomic structures of single molecules and structures from ab initio molecular dynamics simulations. We show that the S Kß emission spectrum is a sensitive probe of the protonation state of the acid molecules. Using non-negative matrix factorization we are able to extract the fractions of different protonation states in the spectra, and the results are in good agreement with the simulation for the higher part of the concentration range.

The evolution of drug resistant parasitic sea lice is of major concern to the salmon farming industry worldwide and challenges sustainable growth of this enterprise. To assess current status and development of L. salmonis sensitivity towards different pesticides used for parasite control in Norwegian salmon farming, a national surveillance programme was implemented in 2013. The programme aims to summarize data on the use of different pesticides applied to control L. salmonis and to test L. salmonis sensitivity to different pesticides in farms along the Norwegian coast. Here we analyse two years of test-data from biological assays designed to detect sensitivity-levels towards the pesticides azamethiphos and deltamethrin, both among the most common pesticides used in bath-treatments of farmed salmon in Norway in later years. The focus of the analysis is on how different variables predict the binomial outcome of the bioassay tests, being whether L. salmonis are immobilized/die or survive pesticide exposure. We found that local kernel densities of bath treatments, along with a spatial geographic index of test-farm locations, were significant predictors of the binomial outcome of the tests. Furthermore, the probability of L. salmonis being immobilized/dead after test-exposure was reduced by odds-ratios of 0.60 (95% CI: 0.42-0.86) for 2014 compared to 2013 and 0.39 (95% CI: 0.36-0.42) for low concentration compared to high concentration exposure. There were also significant but more marginal effects of parasite gender and developmental stage, and a relatively large random effect of test-farm. We conclude that the present data support an association between local intensities of bath treatments along the coast and the outcome of bioassay tests where salmon lice are exposed to azamethiphos or deltamethrin. Furthermore, there is a predictable structure of L. salmonis phenotypes along the coast in the data, characterized by high susceptibility to pesticides in the far north and far south, but low susceptibility in mid Norway. The study emphasizes the need to address local susceptibility to pesticides and the need for restrictive use of pesticides to preserve treatment efficacy.

We present an investigation of the valence-electron excitation spectra including the collective plasmon modes of SrTiO3, LaAlO3 and their heterostructures with non-resonant inelastic x-ray scattering. We analyse the spectra using calculations based on first principles and atomic multiplet models. We demonstrate the feasibility of performing valence IXS experiments in a total reflection geometry. Surprisingly, we find that the plasmon, interband and semicore excitations in multilayers are well described as a superposition of bulk-compound spectra even in a superstructure composing of layers of only one atomic layer thickness.

We report a study on the temperature dependence of the valence electron excitation spectrum of CO2 performed using nonresonant inelastic X-ray scattering spectroscopy. The excitation spectra were measured at the temperatures of 300 and 850 K with momentum-transfer values of 0.4-4.8 Å(-1), i.e., from the dipole limit to the higher-multipole regime, and were simulated using high-level coupled cluster calculations on the dipole and quadrupole level. The results demonstrate the emergence of dipole-forbidden excitations owing to temperature-induced bending mode activation and finite momentum transfer.

We report a study on the hydrogen-bond network of water in aqueous LiCl solutions using X-ray Raman scattering (XRS) spectroscopy. A wide concentration range of 0-17 mol/kg was covered. We find that the XRS spectral features change systematically at low concentrations and saturate at 11 mol/kg. This behavior suggests a gradual destruction in the hydrogen-bond network until the saturation concentration. The surprisingly large concentration required for the saturation supports an interpretation in which the ions affect the structure of water only within their first hydration shell. The study is complemented by density-functional-theory calculations and molecular dynamics simulations.

AIMS: Data suggest that there is a variable use of thrombectomy during primary percutaneous coronary interventions (PPCI). We sought to evaluate practices during PPCI for ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI), including the use of aspiration thrombectomy, and to determine the feasibility of conducting a definitive aspiration thrombectomy trial. METHODS AND RESULTS: A 27-item online survey was distributed to 1,607 interventional cardiologists internationally. A total of 461 responses were received. During PPCI, aspiration thrombectomy is used routinely by 36% of respondents, and selectively by 60%. Twenty-five percent of respondents reported experiencing a complication related to thrombectomy including: vessel dissection (13%), bringing thrombus back into left main coronary artery from target vessel (5%), stroke or transient ischaemic attack (2%), and coronary artery perforation (1%). The vast majority of respondents (89%) believe that a confirmatory aspiration thrombectomy trial is needed and 85% would be willing to randomise patients in such a trial. CONCLUSIONS: The majority of interventional cardiologists surveyed are not using thrombectomy routinely during PPCI. The survey results suggest that a large, confirmatory thrombectomy trial is needed and feasible in the current era. The survey also highlights a significant level of variability and underutilisation of other evidence-based therapies during PPCI.

BACKGROUND: Cardiac troponin elevations are associated not only with acute coronary syndromes (ACS) but also with multiple other cardiac and non-cardiac conditions. STUDY OBJECTIVES: To investigate the etiology and clinical significance of cardiac troponin I elevations in an unselected Emergency Department (ED) patient cohort. METHODS: The study population consisted of 991 consecutive troponin-positive patients admitted to the ED of a university hospital with ACS as the presumptive diagnosis. Cardiac troponin I was measured on admission and a follow-up sample was obtained at 6-12 h. Clinical diagnosis was ascertained retrospectively using all the available information including electrocardiogram, clinical data, laboratory tests, and available coronary angiograms. RESULTS: At admission, 805 (81.2%) patients were already troponin positive; of these, the troponin elevation was related to myocardial infarction (MI) in 654 (81.2%) patients. Finally, 83.0% of the troponin elevations were due to MI, 7.9% were related to other cardiac causes, and 9.1% to non-cardiac diseases. The leading non-cardiac causes were pulmonary embolism, renal failure, pneumonia, and sepsis. Non-cardiac patients with elevated troponin I at admission showed significantly higher in-hospital mortality (26.7% vs. 13.4%, p = 0.002) compared to cardiac patients. CONCLUSION: Elevated troponin levels for reasons other than MI are common in the ED and are a marker of poor in-hospital prognosis.

Cage change and gavage are routine procedures in animal facilities, yet little is known about whether housing modifications change responses to these procedures. Telemetric activity and cardiovascular parameters were assessed in this experiment. BN and F344 male rats were housed in open or individually ventilated cages, each containing 3 rats, 1 of which had a transponder. A crossover design was used, in which 2 groups were given dividers made of 2 intersecting boards (1 form contained holes loaded with food pellets; the other did not) and 1 group was given a rectangular tunnel. On day 8 of each 2-wk period, the cages were changed; on day 11, rats were gavaged. The parameters were evaluated for the first hour and for the following 17 h. Baseline values for each rat were subtracted from the corresponding response values. The presence of objects did not affect the responses of F344 rats to cage changing or gavage. In BN rats with IVCs, the presence of the plain divider modified the response to both procedures. Responses to procedures appeared to be dependent on both the strain and the cage object, thus complicating the establishment of valid general recommendations.

BACKGROUND: Acute anterior myocardial infarction (MI) caused by proximal occlusion of the left anterior descending coronary artery (LAD), is associated with unfavourable outcome and should be recognized by simple noninvasive methods like the 12-lead electrocardiogram (ECG). METHODS: In a prospective post-hoc DANAMI-2 substudy we compared two pre-specified ECG patterns to determine the level of LAD occlusion. The ECG findings were correlated to coronary angiography from the acute phase. The impact on clinical outcome of ECG and angiographic signs of proximal versus distal LAD occlusion was studied. RESULTS: In 146 patients without confounding factors on the ECG, either ST-elevation>or=0.5 mm in lead aVL or any ST-elevation in lead aVR in association with precordial ST-segment elevation in at least two contiguous leads (including V2, V3 or V4) had a sensitivity of 94%, specificity of 49%, positive predictive value of 85% and negative predictive value of 71% to predict a proximal LAD lesion. Surprisingly, ECG or angiographic signs of lesion proximality were not associated with worse outcome at 30 day or 2.7 year follow-up. CONCLUSIONS: The site of occlusion in the LAD could be reliably predicted by 12-lead ECG in patients with acute anterior MI. The prognostic significance of the level of occlusion in the LAD in the modern era of acute ST-elevation MI treatment should be reassessed.

INTRODUCTION: Indoor air quality is important in occupational healthcare when evaluating the health risks of a work environment. Components of the classical and alternative complement pathways are present in ocular tissues and fluids. The authors determined the levels of complement components C1INH, C3, and C4 in sera and C3a in tear fluids of normal persons and of those who were exposed to molds. METHODS: Nine patients environmentally exposed to molds and 6 controls were selected from the Indoor Air Clinic of the Skin and Allergy Hospital. Tear fluid samples were collected from patients during the exposure to molds and after 2 weeks without mold exposure. At the same time, conjunctival cytology samples were obtained from each patient. Tear fluid was taken from 6 control subjects. All had negative skin prick tests to common environmental allergens. RESULTS: In 4 patients subjective eye symptoms and tear fluid C3a levels decreased during 2 weeks of sick leave as did conjunctival eosinophils but other inflammatory cells were unchanged. CONCLUSION: Elevated complement C3a levels in tear fluids may be influenced by environmental exposure to molds. According to the authors' clinical experience, eosinophilia is not a consistent finding in patients exposed to molds. However, molds may cause eosinophilic inflammation in the eye.
