RESUMO
The Caribbean Primate Research Center recently contracted with the Food and Drug Administration to establish a free-ranging island breeding colony of rhesus monkeys. The goal of the program is to produce 600 to 800 offspring yearly from 1,000 breeding age females. The initial colony stock will consist of approximately 360 animals from an existing colony that was established on an island off the southwestern coast of Puerto Rico in 1961. Expansion of the colony will be accomplished by the purchase and introduction of rhesus females obtained from the wild. The colony site, reproductive history, composition, and the methodology of our expansion plans are discussed. In addition, anticipated problems are identified and analyzed.

Oocytes obtained from antral follicles of adult and adolescent rhesus monkeys during the annual breeding season extruded polar bodies in vitro at significantly higher rates (50--60%) than oocytes from animals of similar age during the non-breeding season ((20--30%) or from infant and prepubertal females at any time of the year (20--30%). The proportion of oocytes degenerating in culture was greatest in groups where maturation was highest.

A restricted mating period was used to determine the duration of gestation in the squirrel monkey (Saimiri sciureus) of Colombian-Brazilian origin. Ten pregnancies were observed. The length of the gestation period was found to range from 141 to 154 days with a mean of 146.9 +/- 3.28 SD, a median of 146.5, and a modal length of 146.

Immune serum globulin (human) (ISGH) was administered intramuscularly to approximately 5,600 rhesus monkeys weighing between 1.5 and 3.6 kg. The animals were housed at three separate facilities under differing quarantine conditions. ISGH recipients were grossly healthier, suffered less morbidity and fewer developed antibodies against measles (rubeola) virus. Mortality among ISGH-treated animals was only 20-57% of that in the control animals. No adverse effects were seen from the injection of ISGH into rhesus monkeys, and residual antibodies from the injected material could not be detected 18 and 47 days postinoculation.
