RESUMO

We report the fabrication of single-mode buried channel waveguides for the whole mid-IR transparency range of chalcogenide sulphide glasses (λ ≤ 11 µm), by means of direct laser writing. We have explored the potential of this technology by fabricating a prototype three-dimensional three-beam combiner for future application in stellar interferometry that delivers a monochromatic interference visibility of 99.89% at 10.6 µm and an ultrahigh bandwidth (3-11 µm) interference visibility of 21.3%. These results demonstrate that it is possible to harness the whole transparency range offered by chalcogenide glasses on a single on-chip instrument by means of direct laser writing, a finding that may be of key significance in future technologies such as astrophotonics and biochemical sensing.

RESUMO

We compare the filtering capabilities of two infrared fibers developed to achieve a high rejection ratio of the higher order modes in order to obtain compact modal filters devoted to stellar interferometry. Two types of double-clad fibers are studied: a fiber with a second thin absorbing cladding and a fiber with a second thick absorbing cladding closer to the fiber core; both are single mode around the CO(2) band (10.6 µm). We present the single-mode spectral domain and the nulling capabilities of both fibers for different fiber lengths, comparing simulations with experimental results. We show that the filtering capabilities are improved when the absorbing clad is closer to the fiber core, as the propagation distance needed to filter out these modes is shorter. Thus, to obtain high rejection ratios in compact devices, an absorbing cladding close to the core of the fiber is compulsory in order to suppress cladding modes that could eventually recouple into the waveguide. We present an empirical model that allows determining the minimum filter length, considering only one effective leaky mode with low attenuation, which considerably simplifies the theoretical studies.

A flat waveguide for the middle infrared was made by co-extrusion of two silver halide crystals of different chemical compositions. The transmission of the waveguide and its modal behavior was studied using a Fourier Transform Spectrometer and a dedicated optical bench. Analyzing this spectrum, we were able to obtain the cut-off wavelength of the waveguide. We observed a single mode behavior for wavelengths longer than 8.83mum, in good agreement with the theoretically expected values. This novel procedure is ideal for tailoring the properties of the waveguide for specific applications, in particular the spectral range where it exhibits a single-mode behavior. It can thus be applied to achieve modal filtering for mid-IR astronomical interferometers (e.g. beam combiners, nullers, etc.).

RESUMO

The realization and the characterization of the leaky loop integrated Fourier transform spectrometer (LLIFTS) is described. The principle of the LLIFTS lies on a two-beam interferometer in planar design using a leaky loop waveguide structure. The interference pattern is measured at the edge of the component. The LLIFTS has been realized using the silver/sodium ion exchange on glass substrate technology, which is low cost and requires only a single lithography step. A mask has been designed considering a numerical model recently developed. Interference patterns have been measured in the wavelength range from 1500 to 1630 nm. Wavelength resolutions of 14 and 11 nm have been measured, respectively, on the 350 and the 500 microm radii leaky loop structures on a compact optical device.

RESUMO

Astrophotonics lies at the interface of astronomy and photonics. This burgeoning field has emerged over the past decade in response to the increasing demands of astronomical instrumentation. Early successes include: (i) planar waveguides to combine signals from widely spaced telescopes in stellar interferometry; (ii) frequency combs for ultra-high precision spectroscopy to detect planets around nearby stars; (iii) ultra-broadband fibre Bragg gratings to suppress unwanted background; (iv) photonic lanterns that allow single-mode behaviour within a multimode fibre; (v) planar waveguides to miniaturize astronomical spectrographs; (vi) large mode area fibres to generate artificial stars in the upper atmosphere for adaptive optics correction; (vii) liquid crystal polymers in optical vortex coronographs and adaptive optics systems. Astrophotonics, a field that has already created new photonic capabilities, is now extending its reach down to the Rayleigh scattering limit at ultraviolet wavelengths, and out to mid infrared wavelengths beyond 2500 nm.

This paper presents how photonics associated with new arising detection technologies is able to provide fully integrated instrument for coherent beam combination applied to astrophysical interferometry. The feasibility and operation of on-chip coherent beam combiners has been already demonstrated using various interferometric combination schemes. More recently we proposed a new detection principle aimed at directly sampling and extracting the spectral information of an input signal together with its flux level measurement. The so-called SWIFTS demonstrated concept that stands for Stationary-Wave Integrated Fourier Transform Spectrometer, provides full spectral and spatial information recorded simultaneously thanks to a motionless detecting device. Due to some newly available detection principles considered for the implementation of the SWIFTS concept, some technologies can even provide photo-counting operation that brought a significant extension of the interferometry domain of investigation in astrophysics. The proposed concept is applicable to most of the interferometric instrumental modes including fringe tracking, fast and sensitive detection, Fourier spectral reconstruction and also to manage a large number of incoming beams. The paper presents three practical implementations, two dealing with pair-wise integrated optics beam combinations and the third one with an all-in-one 8 beam combination. In all cases the principles turned into a pair wise baseline coding after proper data processing.

RESUMO

A compact static Fourier transform spectrometer for integrated optics is proposed. It is based on a plane leaky loop structure combined with a plane waveguide. The interference pattern produced in the loop structure leaks outside of it and is guided in the plane waveguide to the photodetector array. This configuration allows one to control the shape of the field pattern at the end of the plane waveguide. A large fringe pattern with a high interference fringe contrast is obtained. A two-dimensional model based on an aperiodic Fourier modal method is used to modelize the coupling between the bent and the plane waveguides, completed with the Helmholtz-Kirchhoff propagation. This concept gives access to plan and compact spectrometers requiring only a single low-cost realization process step. The simulation has been done to realize a spectrometer in glass integrated optics (Deltalambda=6.1 nm at 1500 nm).

This paper reports the characterization of hollow metallic waveguides (HMW) to be used as single-mode wavefront filters for nulling interferometry in the 6-20microm range. The measurements presented here were performed using both single-mode and multimode conductive waveguides at 10.6microm. We found propagation losses of about 16dB/mm, which are mainly due to the theoretical skin effect absorption in addition to the roughness of the waveguide's metallic walls. The input and output coupling efficiency of our samples has been improved by adding tapers to minimize the impedance mismatch. A proper distinction between propagation losses and coupling losses is presented. Despite their elevate propagation losses, HMW show excellent spatial filtering capabilities in a spectral range where photonics technologies are only emerging.

RESUMO

Nulling interferometry is an astronomical technique that requires to combine extremely flat wavefronts to achieve a deep rejection ratio in order to detect Earth-like planets in the mid-infrared band [5 - 20 microm]. Similarly to what is done in the near-infrared, high spatial filtering of the incoming beams can be achieved using single-mode waveguides operating in the mid-infrared. An appreciable reduction of the instrumental complexity is also possible using integrated optics (IO) devices in this spectral range. The lack of single-mode guided optics in the mid-infrared has motivated the present technological study to demonstrate the feasibility of dielectric waveguides functioning at longer wavelengths. We propose to use selenide and telluride components to pursue the development of more complex IO functions.

Feet problems are a very often reason for searching medical advice: one out every people after 65 years of age have foot problems. Conservative medical treatment associated with insoles, braces and special shoes is a very important part of treatment. Patient with foot problem could have just a simple conflict due to too narrow shoes or be as severe as an destructive diabetic arthropathy. After reminding the great groups of pathologies, causes and effects, we describe successively effects, kinds indication and fabrication of foot orthosis and shoes. Prevention of complications is a very important tool in treating feet problems. Every patient with a foot orthosis should have a very good footwear. The interdisciplinary approach with orthesist is mandatory, as is the precise and meticulous follow-up of this patient.
